fROm the president: Every 2 months we try to publish de Eigen Wieken and it is not always easy to find enough copy, but in the end we always manage to give our members some interesting things to read. When I started as president I promised myself to try to write alternatively in English and Dutch. This time it is going to be in Dutch so for those people who have problems understanding please ask one of your fellow members to help you. I’m sure that there are plenty of people able to do this.

IN MEMORIAM ARIE NUGTEREN We lost again another member of the Dutch community. People will remember Arie for his strong voice what made him a good St. Nicolaas, he has done that on several occasions. He would also make stacks of Dutch cakes ( there was nothing like that available at that time) for supper after the St. Nicolaas party when there was dancing. He lived in Sanson but moved to Levin in his later years to be closer to the children. May he rest in peace.

From the Editor It seems a long time ago now that I was in the Netherlands, but is has only been 2 weeks today that we were sitting in the Koru lounge at Auckland airport waiting for out flight to Palmerston North which was delayed by fog. 5 Weeks in summer went by very quickly and the weather was really good ( I still maintain that even though it was hotter in the Netherlands, the sun is more fierce in New Zealand). Went to pretty much every corner of the country, Vaals ( 3 landen punt), Stormvloed kering in Zeeland, Enkhuizen, Volendam, Afsluitdijk, Harlingen, Franeker ( the oldest Planetarium is just amazing), Delfzijl and Eemshaven. Unfortunately I was not allowed to go see the tour the France, but we drove some of the same road 2 days before the cyclists and the BMC team cars passed us on the motorway. We did go and cycled in the National Park Hoge Veluwe and visited the Kroller Muller Museum with its van Gogh Paintings as the main attraction. Had our bikes stolen three times that day, but as the bikes are all free bikes painted white, we just took the next pair and at the end of the afternoon left them with the thousand other bikes at the park entrance near Otterlo. Another amazing event to go to is the Nijmeegse 4Daagse, 4 Day Marches and the Zomerfeesten that go with it. Nijmegen itself has a podium on every streetcorner in the inner city and if there is no corner nearby they put one up in the middle of the street. A whole week of entertainment opens with fireworks on the river Waal. On Tuesday 40 thousand walkers set of to walk 30,40 or 50 km each day for 4 days. Every day will pass through different towns and Wednesday is the day they pass through Wijchen and Balgoy and my brother provides a quiet place of rest with free water, coffee and tea. My mother usually helps at the food stand of the KVO (catholic women organisation) but as it was her eightieth birthday she had a sleep in and got ready for her party in the late afternoon and evening. It was nice to sit under the walnut tree at my brother’s bed and breakfast place (if anybody wants to sleep in a ‘bedstee’ goto www.bbbalgoy.nl). Having a cold drink on the terraces of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, Grave, Nijmegen. In short I might recommend to the Ministry of Education to have longer holidays in July as visiting family in the northern Hemisphere is better around that time. Good thing is the days are getting longer on this side of the world and after this morning’s heavy shower and thunder the sun is out again and it will dry up all the land. Keep smiling
Stephan van Haren.

Past events: Coffee morning Whanganui June 10. We went with 14 members to Whanganui. It was a big success, everybody had a good time, lots of talking, playing klaverjassen and rummicub together. Whanganui looked after us very well, heaps of yummy things (not very healthy but very nice anyway) with the coffee when we arrived. For lunch there was soup and buns. It was a very enjoyable and it is certainly a good idea to something together again. We have invited Whanganui back for our end of the year coffee morning.
