JURNAL SAINS MATERI INDONESIA Indonesian Journal of Materials Science Edisi Khusus Material untuk Sensor 2011

JURNAL SAINS MATERI INDONESIA Indonesian Journal of Materials Science Special Edition on Materials for Sensor 2011
EDITORIAL PREFACE In the few decades, considerable efforts have been done to develope material for sensing application ranging from daily life, biotechnology (targeted drug delivery and biosensing), optical devices, chemical sensing, photocatalysis, and environmental monitoring. Nanostructured materials especially oxides have gained a huge attention due to a large set of outstanding properties such as high surface to volume ratio. Many studies, therefore, have been focused on the synthesizing and characterization of nanomaterial for sensing application. Some issues should be considered among the study of material for sensor are cost and environmental friendly. Related to the competitive cost issue, several commercial ceramic semiconductors, for example, have been successfully used as a sensing material for acetone sensors. However, the resources materials are not renewable that will make the cost is more expensive, rise by the time, and then the product become uncompetitive in satisfying the market demands. For the environmental friendly issue, health and environmental concerns with lead-containing materials, for example, have brought several researchers to develop lead-free piezoelectric materials to replace lead-containing piezoelectric ceramics i.e., Lead Zirconium Titanate (PZT). In order to accommodate the information of research issues on the materials for sensing application, the editorial board of Indonesian Journal of Material Science (JUSAMI), collected several articles related to material for sensor to be published in this special edition. This special edition on materials for sensor covers topics on several applications such as gas, light, temperature, as well as chemical and biological sensor. Synthesizing and characterization of both organic and inorganic materials were reported within 11 articles. We hope that this special edition find its contribution on the sharing of information between material researchers especially for the development of sensing devices.
