1. General information about the education system in the Czech Republic
Education in the Czech Republic is realized according to the law no. 561/2004 Sb., on preschool, basic, secondary and tertiary education (education law), as amended. n Preschool education is not compulsory and it takes place in nursery schools (mateřská škola). It is normally organized for children from 3 to 6 (7) years of age n Compulsory school attendance takes place in primary schools (základní škola) for as long as 9 school years. However, it is possible to do so only until the student turns 17 (the last year of school is the one during which the student turns 17 years of age). a The obligation of compulsory schooling applies for: a The citizens of the Czech Republic a The citizens of the EU who stay in the Czech Republic for a period longer than 90 days a Other foreigners, who are authorized to reside in the Czech Republic permanently or temporarily for a period longer than 90 days a Asylum seekers n After finishing the compulsory school attendance it is possible to commence the study at secondary school (střední škola) n After graduating the secondary school it is possible to commence the study at higher vocational school (vyšší odborná škola) or university (vysoká škola)
1. 1. Preschool education The content and objectives of preschool education Preschool education is institutionally provided by nursery schools. Nursery school is legislatively embodied within the educational system as a type of school. The provision of preschool education is according to the education law a public service. Preschool education should facilitate further education and life path of the child. Its mission is therefore to develop child’s personality, to support his physical development and health, his personal satisfaction and well-being, to facilitate his understanding of the surrounding world and motivate him to further knowledge and learning, as well as to teach the child how to live in the society and get him acquainted with the society standards and values. Preschool education is organized for children of the age normally from 3 to 6 (7) years of age. Children in the last year before beginning compulsory school attendance are given preference in the acceptance process. The nursery schools are organizationally divided in classes.

Basic education at Stage 1 (1st to 5th grade) is conceived so as to facilitate pupils’ transition from pre-school education and family care to compulsory, regular and systematic education patterns. Basic education at Stage 2 (6th to 9th grade) helps pupils to acquire knowledge, skills and habits that will enable them to study independently and to create such values and attitudes as lead to prudent and cultivated behaviour, to responsible decision-making and to respect for the rights and obligations of citizens of both the Czech Republic and the European Union.
