Štíhlé, bílé tělo měla napjaté agonií porodních bolestí a zmáčené potem, vyvolaným porodními stahy i nemilosrdným letním vedrem. Odhodlaně snášela bolesti, rozhodnuta nekřičet, protože takové chování se v jejích představách rovnalo slabosti charakteru, a ona nezískala Zabaaiho žádnou slabostí. Ponořena napůl v bezvědomí vzpomínala na den, kdy ho poprvé uviděla. Navštívil tenkrát kvůli obchodu dům jejího otce v Alexandrii a omylem vešel do ženských zahrad.
Teprve potom bude konec. Vstoupil do pokoje – muž středního věku a pevné postavy. Temné oči mu zářily a černé vlasy a vousy neskrývaly žádné stříbro i přes jeho čtyřicet tři zim. Měl hezkou, ostře modelovanou tvář s vysokými lícními kostmi, orlím nosem a plnými, smyslnými rty. Tamar, ženu svého mládí, a Iris, ženu svého zralého věku. Ostatní ženy mu mohly vnést do života zpestření a chvilkovou rozkoš, ale těchto dvou si cenil. „Bohové ti požehnali a dali ti dceru, můj pane,“ řekla Tamar. „Iris! Iris!“ Jeho hluboký hlas hřejivě zazněl oceněním. „Zase jednou jsi udělala něco neočekávaného. Dala jsi mi jedinou věc, kterou jsem až dosud postrádal. Dceru! Děkuju ti, má krásko! Děkuju!“
7/34
„Buď v boží péči po celý život, dceruško,“ zašeptala potichu Iris a usnula.
ČÁST I.
Zabaai ben Selim dcerku objal a hlasitě políbil.
11/34
zvláštní podmanivou vůni. Koželužny. Míchané parfémy. Sušení a čistění mokré vlny na spřádání a barvení. Barvírny hedvábí. Dobytek. „Ze-no-bie! Kde jsi, dítě? Ukaž se, nemusíš se už dál schovávat. Zimní výprava už vyrazila.“ „Zenobie, nehloupni!“ Irisin hlas zněl velice rozmrzele. „Okamžitě vylez!“ Dítě stočené pod velkou postelí v otcově ložnici se tiše zachichotalo. Letos nebude trávit zimu v té prokleté poušti. Jen bozi vědí, jak to nenávidí! Míle a míle nekonečného písku. A potom tam byly kozy. Zatímco její největší přítelkyně Julie Tullio trávívala celou nádhernou zimní sezonu v Palmyře a chodila do divadel a na různé hry, ona, Zenobie bat Zabaai, trávila zimu tím, že pásla stádo tupých, smradlavých koz! To nebylo k vydržení! Tady jsi!“ Tamar sáhla rukou pod postel a táhla ji silnými prsty ven. „Ne!“ křičela zuřivě Zenobie a zápasila s ní. „Nechci jet, mami! Proč tu nemůžeme zůstat? My dvě? Tatínkovi by to nevadilo.
12/34
„Nemohla bych tu zůstat s Julií? Její maminka říká, že by jí to nevadilo. Tamar rychle postoupila kupředu a řekla: „Dobrý den, setníku.

Proč to udělali? Řekla jsi jim, kdo jste. Proč tě zranili a matku zabili?“ Tamar vyplivla zlomený zub. „Římanům nic nevysvětlíš,“ řekla svárlivě, když se jí konečně podařilo se Zenobiinou pomocí sednout a opřít se zády o postel. Musím počkat tady.“ „Je to všechno moje chyba,“ plakala Zenobie a stříbřité oči měla plné slz. Teď jdi a přiveď otce.“ „Budeš v pořádku?“ popotáhla úzkostlivě Zenobie. „Přines mi džbán s vodou a vydržím to. Pak musíš jet, ale buď opatrná.“ „Vyjedu zadní branou,“ slíbila Zenobie. Tamar unaveně přikývla. Najednou si připadala tak vyčerpaně a velice, velice staře. Musí přežít, už jenom proto, aby uviděla, jak budou potrestáni ti, kteří jí to provedli a svévolně zavraždili Iris. Když Zenobie odešla, zůstala sedět v poledním žáru a téměř bez jakýchkoli emocí sledovala dvě masařky, které bzučely na Irisině znásilněném těle. Zenobie vyšla z domu a šla podél zeleninové zahrady ke stájím, kde čekali tři netrpěliví a vrtošiví velbloudi a přežvykovali píci.
16/34
Zenobie mu seděla na zádech pevně usazená v sedle z rudé kůže. Bílý lněný chiton měla vykasaný, aby mohla zlatavýma nohama velblouda svobodně vést a její mysl přitom zuřivě pracovala. To prostě nedokázala pochopit. V čele zástupu už zahlédla otce a nejstaršího bratra Akbara. Zavyl zuřivostí, bolestí i smutkem a začal si trhat vousy a šaty.
„Tohle by neměla vidět! Uchopil ji do svých silných paží a plačící ji vynesl z komnaty. Bude to pravda! Zůstali až dodnes divokými zvířaty!“ „Co provedli matce, Akbare?“ zeptala se holčička vystrašeně. Zaváhal, protože si nebyl jistý, jak jí odpovědět. Byla ještě dítě. Mohla být dokonce jeho vlastní dcerou. Měl syna jejího věku. Nevěděl, kolik toho ví o mužích a ženách.
18/34
„To je správné,“ přisvědčil. Nemusel zacházet do podrobností. Římané znásilnili tvoji matku, zneuctili ji a tím i našeho otce, naši rodinu a všechny Beduíny. „Chtěla mě zachránit před znásilněním?“ „Kdyby znásilnili tebe, sestřičko, bylo by to ještě mnohem větší zneuctění, protože jsi panna a ještě jsi nepoznala muže. Teď už chápala, proč matka křičela a prosila Římany o milost. Snažila se zachránit vlastní ctnost i čest svého manžela. Ti Římané jsou hrozné bestie! Zenobie toužila po pomstě! Z otcovy ložnice se ozvalo naříkání. Právě dorazili ostatní členové kmene a ženy při vstupu do komnaty vzlykaly smutkem, soucitem a hanbou. Zabaai ben Selim vyšel z ložnice a krátce nařídil nejstaršímu synovi: „Odveď Zenobii do jejího pokoje, Akbare. Chtěl bych ji vyslechnout.“ Akbar vstal a odvedl sestru do jejího pokoje v ženské části domu. Vzal něžně Zenobii do náruče a objal ji.
Nato mu navoněli a upravili vousy. Nyní vypadal jako hezký muž středního věku s tmavými vousy, v nichž mu začínalo prosvítat stříbro. Jeho pocity prozrazovaly pouze tmavé oči otupělé bolestí. Do pokoje vstoupil jeho syn: „Už jsou tady, otče.“ Zabaai přikývl a šel pozdravit hosty. „Pokoj s tebou, můj princi, i s vámi, Antonie Porcie. Do domu vtrhli římští vojáci, Antonie Porcie.
Jaké muže si to dnes vybíráte do legií, Antonie Porcie? Palmyra není nově dobyté město, kde mohou Římané znásilňovat a kořistit do sytosti. My přinášíme mír. Muži, kteří se zúčastnili této hrozné záležitosti, budou neprodleně nalezeni a potrestáni tak rychle, jak to bude možné.“ „Ještě dnes,“ přišla chraptivá odpověď. „Slunce nesmí zapadnout, aniž by zůstali původci zločinu nepotrestáni.
„Doprovodím místodržícího do města, bratranče,“ řekl mladý princ.
22/34
Než mohl Zabaai ben Selim odpovědět, ozvala se překvapivě silným hlasem Tamar: „Budu připravena, můj princi! Pokud budu žít alespoň okamžik poté, co vydám svědectví proti té sběři, bude mi to stačit!“ Princ Odenathus objal svého bratrance a potom s římským místodržícím opustili místnost. „Přátelé neznásilňují a nemordují nevinné ženy!“ odvětila pohrdavě. „Vy jste se stal jedním z nich, můj princi! Afektovaný a navoněný římský švihák!

„Řím slyšel tvou žalobu a odpoví ti spravedlivě, Zabaai ben Selime,“ přišla odpověď místodržícího. „Lucie Oktavie!“ „Pane?“ předstoupil velící tribun šesté legie. „Shromáždi své Alemany!“ „Ano, pane!“ odvětil hbitě tribun. Pak se obrátil a zakřičel své rozkazy. „Galští Alemani postoupit kupředu, teď!“ Sto dvacet mužů římské jízdy z galských provincií se pomalu pohnulo kupředu, a když nakonec zastavilo své koně, byli seřazeni do deseti řad po dvanácti mužích. Jejich koně podrážděně potřásali hlavami, protože cítili nervozitu svých pánů. Zabaai ben Selim poodešel zpět na místo, kde nyní už mlčky stály ženy jeho kmene, a vyvedl odtud svou první ženu Tamar. Společně procházeli podél řad římské jízdy a brzy bylo slyšet Tamařin silný hlas, kterým označovala viníky. „Tamten! A tenhle!
„To je on, můj muži. „Ano, můj pane,“ odpověděla mu potichu a zatoužila přitom, aby jej mohla vzít do náruče a utěšit ho. Obvinění mužové byli zbaveni uniformy a svlečeni do naha.

Beduíni vrazili do země kůl a přivázali ho k němu, tváří ke dřevu a zády k davu. Zabaai ben Selim mu tenkým bičem spleteným z koňských žíní udělil prvních pět ran. Nebyly to těžké rány, spíš ostré, a nadělaly mu pruhy působící ostrou bolest. Hned nato ho dotáhli k bublajícímu kotli a ponořili mu useknuté pahýly do vařící smůly, aby zabránili smrti vykrvácením.

Bez jakéhokoli předstírání skromnosti si dívka svlékla narůžovělý hedvábný oděv a nahá si stoupla před dav. Nejmladší syn Zabaaiho ben Selima, šestiletý Hasan, se zmocnil Galových odříznutých rukou a vyzývavě tancoval kolem svázaného muže a mával svými trofejemi. Dvě římské legie i pomocné sbory stály tiše a vše pozorně sledovaly, ale někteří měli tváře bledé, zvlášť ti, kteří stáli poblíž nešťastného Gala. Antonius Porcius už předtím skrytě zvracel do stříbrného umyvadla, které mu přidržel jeho osobní sluha. Kvůli poslednímu mučení Vincta Sexta něžně vykoupali v teplé vodě s přídavkem medu a pomerančové šťávy. Začal horečně křičet, prosit o milost a žadonit o to, aby ho hned zabili.

Římský místodržící sestoupil s poněkud roztřesenýma nohama z pódia a došel až tam, kde stál Zabaai ben Selim se svými syny a děvčátkem Zenobií. Rádi vás zase uvidíme na jaře v Palmyře.“ Nato římský místodržící vstoupil do nosítek a přikázal nosičům, aby pospíšili do města.
Jednoho dne by z ní mohla vyrůst zajímavá žena.
To děvče ho čím dál víc fascinovalo.

Princ tedy vstal a odešel. Slunce už mělo brzy zapadnout a zatím barvilo svým jasným světlem bílé mramorové věže a sloupoví Palmyry do ruda a do zlatova. „My tady na poušti vodou zbytečně neplýtváme, Římane. Ty umíráš. Kdybych ti dala napít, bylo by to plýtvání.“ Zírala na něj šedýma očima, jež byly naprosto bez citu a tvrdé jako kameny. „Nemáš… ani trochu… slitování?“ chtěl vědět. „Ukázal jsi nějaké slitování s mou milovanou matkou?“ V jejích očích probleskla intenzivní nenávist. „Neměl jsi s ní žádné slitování a já ho teď zas nemám s tebou, ty prase! „Budeš umírat pomalu, Římane,“ pronesla potichu, „a já tu zůstanu, abych to viděla.“

Vinctus Sextus zlehka přikývl. Pomstu dovedl pochopit. Vinctus Sextus otevřel ústa a zavyl drtivou bolestí a zoufalstvím. Zvuk triumfálního dětského smíchu bylo to poslední, co zaslechl. Když padl mrtev do písku pouště, provázel ho ten smích přímo do pekel. Zenobie se tápavě zvedala, protože měla ztuhlé nohy. Seděla vedle Vincta Sexta víc než osmnáct hodin a po celou tu dobu nic nejedla ani nepila. Náhle ji zvedly do výše silné paže a už hleděla do obdivného obličeje svého nejstaršího bratra Akbara.

Zenobie spokojeně přikývla a potom řekla: „On prosil, Akbare. „A kromě toho, což nejsem milovaná bohy, Akbare? Budou mě vždycky chránit!“
