Dat zelfs spin-offs zoals Fantastic Beasts and where to Find Them en Quidditch Through the Ages op bestsellerlijsten prijken, getuigt van het uitzonderlijk succes van Rowlings Harry Potter-boeken (Whited 2002: 3). Clinton as a candidate is Hermione Granger. She wants to sign up for all 1

the courses, and if there‟s a scheduling conflict, she‟ll replicate” 4(Nel 2002: 282).
It is all too easy to blur or even lose this contrast by a translation in which unadapted British CSIs [culture-specific items] may seem as exotic and alien as the elements of magic and wizardry “(Davies 2003: 97).

Nikolajeva (2006: 278) beweert dat er een fundamenteel verschil is tussen vertalen voor kinderen en vertalen voor volwassenen: Adults reader can be assumed to be familiar with the phenomena of foreign cultures or at least accept that names, places, ways, and habits can be different if a book they read comes from another country. Young readers may lack both the knowledge and tolerance.
7 Aixelá (1996: 56) voegt hier aan toe dat hedendaagse vertalingen doorgaans lezen “as an original on the stylistic level and as the original on socio-cultural one”.
9
Anderzijds wordt de vertaler vanuit een meer functionele visie geacht aanpassingen te maken tenminste als “the translated text in its specific context is to function somewhat similarly to the way in which the original functions in its initial situation”. All such adaptations are based on the assumptions – often arbitrary – about young readers‟s needs and interests. (Nikolajeva 2006: 280).
The goblin looked at it closely. 8

„That seems to be in order.‟ „An‟ I‟ve got a letter here from Professor Dumbledore,‟ said Hagrid importantly, throwing out his chest. „It‟s about the You-Know-What in vault seven hundred and thirteen.‟ The goblin read the letter carefully.
In volgend fragment raakt Hagrid onwel van de wilde rit door de onderaardse gangen van Gringotts: He did look very green when the cart stopped at last beside a small door in the passage wall, Hagrid got out and had to lean against the wall to stop his knees trembling. Griphook unlocked the door.
Malfoy 12
vraagt naar Harry‟s ouders: “But they were our kind, weren‟t they?” (PS: 60-1; nadruk in origineel). Our kind wordt de notre monde in de Franse versie, the other sort wordt ceux qui viennent d’autres familles, en they’ve never been brought up to know our ways wordt ils n’on pas eu la même éducation. You‟ll soon find out some wizarding families are much better than others, Potter. You don‟t want to go making friends with the wrong sort. I can help you there” (PS: 81) wordt er “[f]ais bien attention à qui tu fréquentes, Potter. Feral (2006: 465) besluit dat “French children […] need to be protected from the values of birth and heredity which go against France‟s republican ideology”. Hij raadt de vertaler aan to “extricate the underlying formula on which the potential effect is based and thereupon generate another, new, text or joke in the target language, keeping 13
as close as possible, or relevant, to the propositional context of the original”. Go on, have a pasty, said Harry, who had never had anything to share before or, indeed, anyone to share it with. It was a nice feeling, sitting there with Ron, eating their way through all Harry‟s pasties and cakes (the sandwiches lay forgotten). (ES: 109)
Jentsch (2002: 288) poneert dat “the relationships among characters are important aspects of their portrayal and development. One way to determine this relationship is to look at how the characters address one another”.
15
norms [that] affect the initial [act] of choosing a text to be translated” (222) en “operational norms [… ][that dictate] the actual process of translation” (223). Nietzsche (1974, geciteerd in Venuti 1998: 241) stelt zelfs dat “translation was a form of conquest”. Venuti (1998: 240) beschrijft de domesticating strategie als “a translation project [that] conform[s] to values currently dominating the target-language culture, taking conservative and openly assimilationist approach to the foreign text appropriating it to support domestic canons, publishing trends, political alignments” en oppert voor de foreignizing strategie als alternatief (Venuti 1998: 240).
Nikolajeva (2006: 287) fungeert dus als advocaat voor de functionele benadering waar “the goal is to approximate the response of source-text readers, and substituting a familiar notion for a foreign would be considered more appropriate”.

4. Cultuur en vertaalwetenschap 4.1 Cultural Turn Een vertaler wordt in zijn werk steeds geconfronteerd met wat Aixelá (1996: 53) “linguistic diversity” noemt: Linguistic codes in themselves are arbitrary systems in which the function and meaning of each sign depend mainly on the sign in opposition to other signs, and not on a supposed objective relation of equivalence with the continuum we call reality.
BenAri (1992: 222) beschrijft vertaling als “far more of a culturall process than a linguistic or literary one”. Bassnett (2007: 13) merkt op dat binnen het vertaalwetenschappelijk onderzoek een verschuiving heeft plaatsgevonden “from a more formalist approach to translation to one that laid greater emphasis on extra-textual factors”.
A writer is a product of a particular time and a particular context, just as a translator is a product of another time and another context. Translation is about language, but translation is also about culture, for the two are inseparable.
A] society‟s culture consists of whatever it is one has to know or believe in order to operate in a manner acceptable to its members, and do so in any role that they accept for one of themselves […] Culture is not a material phenomenon; it does not consist of things, people, behavior, or emotions. It is rather an organization of these things. It is the forms of things that people have in mind, their model of perceiving, relating, and otherwise interpreting them. (geciteerd in House 2004: 495)
I]n translation a CSI does not exist of itself, but as the result of a conflict arising from any linguistically represented reference in a source text which, when transferred to a target language, poses a translation problem due to the nonexistence or to the different value (wheter determined by idology, usage, frequency, etc.) of the given item in the target language culture.
This is Money?”(Davies 2003: 74). De frequentie van het CSI is net als de “textual centrality” “a force that pushes the translator to give it the biggest possible degree of conservation” Aixelá (1996: 70). In Spanje daarentegen zou men lexicale herhaling eerder proberen te vermijden.
Als voorbeeld geeft Davies de Franse vertaling van Dundee > la côte est de l’Écosse in de volgende passage: Viewers from as far apart as Kent, Yorkshire and Dundee have been phoning in to tell me that instead of the rain I promised yesterday, they‟ve had a downpour of shooting stars! (PS: 11)
ieder kind voorhanden was.
Het voordeel van deze strategie spreekt voor zich: “Clearly, this is a convenient method of opening up the text to a wider audience, since it succeeds in conveying the essential characteristics of a referent while avoiding what might be disconcertingly unfamiliar. (Davies 2003: 83).
(Davies 2003: 84). There is a very fine line between passable and implausible localization” (Davies 2003: 84). In volgende vertaling schuilt een chronologische incongruentie: Perhaps people have been celebrating Bonfire Night early- it‟s not till next week, folks!
De Oxford English Dictionary voegt hieraan toe: “worn by boys, sportsmen, and others who require a freer use of their limbs”.

In volgend fragment wordt the sleeve of Harry’s robe > [son] bras (transformation): “Neville clutched the sleeve of Harry‟s 12
35
robe and made a choking noise” (PS: 182) wordt “Harry sentit la main de Neville lui serrer le bras” (ES: 254). Soms wordt robes weggelaten als de context dit in zekere mate toelaat: “Ron let go of the front of Malfoy‟s robes (PS: 144) wordt “Ron lâcha Malefoy (ES: 201) en “Harry felt in the pocket of his robes […]” (PS: 160) wordt “Harry fouilla dans sa poche […]” (ES: 223).
Ron, though, was staring transfixed at his image” (PS: 155).

Rons voorstel om te spijbelen wordt vrij accuraat weergegeven in zowel de Zweedse als de Franse vertaling: “Ron wanted to skip Herbology and go straight to down to the hut” (PS: 171). Feral (2006: 462) ziet de weglating van Rons argument – “Hermione, how many times in our lives are we going to see a dragon hatching?” 39
Zo wordt “first-year Gryffindors” (PS: 107) eenvoudigweg “les Gryffondor” (ES: 151). He complained loudly about first-years never getting in the house Quidditch teams” (PS: 107). Zo wordt “that should be enough fer a couple o’ terms” (PS: 58) “[a]vec ça, tu auras de quoi couvrir tes frais pendant l‟année scolaire” (ES: 83). “Have a good 41
term” (PS: 69) wordt “[b]on voyage” (ES: 98). “[T]he day before term started […]”
De Oxford English Dictionary definieert een prefect als volgt: “any one of a number of senior pupils given authority over and disciplinary responsibility for his or her juniors”.
Now, yer mum an‟ dad were as good a witch an‟ wizard as I ever knew. Head Boy an‟Girl at Hogwarts in their day!” (PS: 45). Feral (2006: 461) staaft haar these met een tweede voorbeeld: „Harry – you are a great wizard, you know.‟ „I‟m not so good as you,‟said Harry, very embarrassed, as she let go of him. „Me!‟ said Hermione. „Books! And cleverness! There are more important things – friendship and bravery and – oh Harry – be careful!‟ (PS: 208; mijn nadruk) -Harry, tu est un grand sorcier!
“And it showed your friend Ron himself as Head Boy” (PS: 156) wordt vertaald door “[e]t il montre ton ami Ron avec la coupe de Quidditch” (ES: 218).
In een schoolsamenhang, en in het bijzonder in de academische wereld, doelt men hiermee op “the table at which the president and fellows sit” (OED).

6. Eigennamen Eigennamen kunnen worden beschouwd als CSIs (Aixelá 1996: 59) maar worden niet zelden als een apart vertaalprobleem gezien: “[T]here are many problems concerning the translation of proper names which may not plausibly be subsumed within a discussion of culture-specific references […]” (Davies 2003: 72).
6.1 Eigennamen: lost in translation? (Ballard 1993: 209). Ze schrijft het volgende over enkele vertaalde eigennamen in het Franse boek: “they undermine the important sense of place in the novels”(294).
Me dad‟s a Muggle. Mam didn‟t tell him she was a witch „til they were married” (PS: 93).
“In semantic terms they stand out because they signify directly rather than indirectly, and resist the integration into paradigmatic series (in the Saussurian sense)” (Hermans 1988, 12).
Newmark (2004: 528) stelt dat deze “partly meaningful and partly „national‟ neologisms […] transmit message and culture in varying proportions”.

“Some of Rowling‟s names may actually sound foreign and relatively uninterpretable to the original audience of British children, but less so to others” (Davies 2003: 76). In de Harry Potter-boeken is het verschil tussen soortnamen en eigennamen echter functioneel: “words with meanings unique to the magical world, be they accepted English or not” krijgen een hoofdletter (Jentsch 2002: 300).

J.K. Rowling studeerde Frans en Klassieke talen aan de Universiteit van Exeter. 6.3 Functies van eigennamen en verschillende vertaalstrategieën Uit het bovenstaande is gebleken dat de traditionele visie dat eigennamen op zich geen betekenis dragen (cf. § 6.2), niet opgaat voor vele eigennamen in literaire teksten, “given the tendency of the literary text to activate the semantic potential of all its constituent elements, on all levels” (Hermans 1988: 13; nadruk in origineel). Traditioneel wordt het identificeren van een unieke referent vaak als de enige functie van eigennamen beschouwd (cf. § 6.2). Maar dat is duidelijk simplistisch (cf. Willems 1996: 38-50). Nord (2003: 183) meent dat eigennamen in tegenstelling tot soortnamen wel “mono-referentieel” maar geenszins “mono-functioneel” zijn. Eerst en vooral dienen ze om zaken, personen, plaatsen, instellingen … te identificeren. Dit is inderdaad hun basisfunctie maar een eigennaam kan tevens informatie bevatten over de drager: de eigennaam geeft impliciet aan tot welke cultuur de drager behoort en fungeert dus als “culture marker”. Bij een derde functie is de aanwezige informatie explicieter en heeft de eigennaam het vermogen om een persoon te karakteriseren door een “descriptive name” (Nord 2003: 184). Mussche (2008) voegt hier het vermogen om humor te scheppen aan toe. Het humoristisch effect kan bekomen worden door semantische aspecten. Fluffy bijvoorbeeld is een naam die typisch is voor snoezige huisdieren. De lezer raakt dan ook geamuseerd door de incongruentie die ontstaat als Rowling deze naam toekent aan een driehoofdig schrikwekkend monster (Davies 2003: 76). Maar humor kan evenzeer ontstaan door een spel met de vorm. Rowling maakt gretig gebruik van stafrijm (Severus Snape, Dedalus Diggle, de oprichters van de vier afdelingen Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw en Salazar Slytherin en enkele geesten The Bloody Baron, The Fat Friar) en letterkeer (Mirror of Erised). Van Coillie (2006: 124) onderscheidt zes mogelijke functies van de namen van personages naast de basisfunctie van identificatie: (1) “the informative function” doet een beroep op de kennis van de lezer en/of brengt de lezer bepaalde kennis bij;
55
(6) “replacement by a more widely known name from the source culture or an internationally known name with the same function”, waarmee de vertaler de naam herkenbaar wil maken voor het doelpubliek, maar de vreemde context wil behouden. Deze strategie wordt doorgaans toegepast wanneer een soortnaam als eigennaam wordt gebruikt (bijvoorbeeld Squirrel > Eekhoorn); (9) “replacement by a name with another or additional connotation”.
Van Coillie ziet overigens een parallel tussen de behandeling van eigennamen en realia: “Translators who make identification and recognizability their priorities will tend to modify names. […] When recognizability is the

overriding goal, the translator will usually adapt other cultural data such as place names, dishes, measurements and weight, titles of books, etc.”
Davies waarschuwt voor “the danger of fixing what was meant to be fluid and clarifying what was first ambiguous (Manini, geciteerd in Davies 2003: 79).
Dergelijke ingrepen zullen onder de derde categorie geplaatst worden, replacement of a [proper] name by a common noun (cf. replacement of a personal name by a common noun).

De titel van zijn werk Curses and Counter Curses (Bewitch your Friends and Befuddle your Ennemies with the Latest Revenges) verraadt zijn vakgebied, waardoor zijn naam betekenisvol is.
I was not aware though that there would be a second book until I had finished the translation of The Philosopher’s Stone, a fact that would certainly have influenced my reinvention of certain proper names” (Wyler 2003: 9). Ook Nikolajeva (2006: 287) vindt dat “it is not desirable to change an established character name, even if the new translation shows greater fidelity to the original” (207; mijn nadruk). Aixelá (1996: 67) stelt dat “[p]revious translations of the same genre, author, or source text place constraints on the target text insofar as they have become a recognized part of the target language culture”. Ook Nel (2002: 266) merkt op dat de lezers inconsistenties merken: “the Potter books have drawn such a wide following: people are collecting different editions, reading the books many times over […]”.
Die betekenis speelt wel een rol in de volgende passage: „Excuse me, Professor Flitwick, could I borrow Wood for a moment?‟ Wood? Thought Harry, bewildered: was Wood a cane she was going to use on him? (PS: 112)
He Who Must Not Be Named wordt Celui-Dont-On-Ne-Doit-Pas-Prononcer-Le-Nom in het Frans en Den-som-inte-får-nämnas. Tjocke munkbrodern). Elfric l’Insatiable, Zw. Elfric den envies; Emeric the Evil > Fr. Emeric le Hargneux, Zw. Emeric den elaka; Uric30 the Oddball > Fr. Ulric le Follingue, Zw. Ulric den underlige; Gregory the Smarmy > Fr. Gregory le Hautain, Zw. Sliskige Gregory.
A different approach is sometimes taken in children‟s books, especially those for very young children, but we thought the book would appeal predominantly to Swedish readers of eleven and up, who already had a lot of exposure to English, and the names contribute to the overall exotic flavor, if nothing else”.31 Het punt dat hier wordt aangehaald, met name de vertrouwdheid met het Engels, is ook voor Brønsted en Dollerup (2004: 13) een doorslaggevende factor in de beslissing om de eigennamen al dan niet te vertalen: “the

audience that would get all the points of the English names would differ from country to country depending on the knowledge of English and the familiarity with Great Britain.”
vi. In de Franse vertaling wordt Parvati Patil > quiconque: “On a gagné!
Davies (2003: 89) vermoedt dat dit gebeurt “to compensate for losses of Englishness at other points in the text”. Hoewel dit vrijwel een letterlijke vertaling is, vindt Davies (2003: 76) dat “[a] French pet name with similar connotations, not necessarily relating to the possession of long hair, could have preserved this joke in a way that a literal translation does not”.
suggestieve allusie expliciet maken (cf. Trimble > Jentremble). De aanpak van de Franse vertaler leunt daardoor dicht aan bij een functionele visie op vertalen van literatuur (supra): “what really matters is not to reproduce close equivalents for specific cases, but simply to preserve the overall impact and offer a similar reading experience” (Davies 2003: 96).
England; Great Britain > Fr. l’ Angleterre, Zw. Storbritannien; Britain > Fr. Grande-Bretagne, Zw. England.
74
The Leaky Cauldron > Den läckande kitteln; Hog’s Head > Svinhuvudet; Platform 9 ¾ > perrong nio och tre kvart; the Forbidden forest > Den förbjudna skogen. De Franse weergaves van sommige toponiemen lijken Davies (2003: 93) ad hoc-oplossingen: “translations appear to be provided where a plausible equivalent springs to mind, but not otherwise”.

De boekenwinkel voor tovenaars heet Flourish and Blotts waarin Engelse taalelementen aanwezig zijn: “a flourish” betekent binnen de kalligrafie “a decoration about a letter or writing, consisting of flowing curves executed with a sweep of the pen” (OED), een blot is een inktvlek. Tenslotte neemt Hagrid Harry mee naar Olivanders: Makers of Fine Wands since 382 BC. Kr.
33

Trollkarlsministeriet; Defense Against the Dark Arts (schoolvak) > Fr. la défense contre les forces du Mal, Zw. försvar mot svartkonster; Transfiguration > Fr. métamorphose, Zw. förvandlingskonst, de Zweedse vertaler voegt konst toe
77
Chocogrenouilles, Zw. chokladgrodor; Liquorice Wands > Fr. Vert gallois, Zw. vanliga walesiska gröna; Norwegian Ridgeback (drakensoort) > Fr.
verwijzing de afwezigheid in de doeltekst van traditionele elementen goedmaken, maar zijn de connotaties van (jelly) beans en dragées heel verschillend: While beanie babies are available from any corner shop and Jelly Beans sweets come in fifty flavours, the dragées of “Dragées surprise de Bertie Crochue” are French old-fashioned sugared almonds only consumed at baptisms and weddings and ordered from specialist shops. (Feral 2006: 468)
The Daily Prophet klinkt voor Engelse lezers vertrouwd aangezien The Daily Telegraph, Daily Express, Daily Mirror bestaande kranten of tabloids zijn. Yet, „Herbologie‟ would have echoed a French eleven-year-old student‟s syllabus (Technologie, Biologie…)”. Nimbus 2000, Zw. Nimbus Tvåtusen; Comet Two Sixty > Fr. Comète 260, Zw. KometTvåSextio; Cleansweep Seven > Fr. Astiqueur 7, Zw. Rensopar-sjua.
Bludgers proberen de spelers van hun bezems te slaan en de term alludeert vermoedelijk op to bludgeon36: “To bludgeon someone means to hit them several times with a heavy object” (CCED). “If you snitch something, you steal it quickly en quietly” (CCE).
I show not your face but your hearts desire.
I was looking for a word that suggested both foolishness and loveability. The word 'mug' came to mind, for somebody gullible, and then I softened it. I think 'muggle' sounds quite cuddly” ( http://www.theninemuses.net/hp/m.html, geraadpleegd op 4 mei 2009).
82

7. Algemeen besluit Ben-Ari (1992: 221) beweert dat er overheersende normen bestaan “far beyond language differences and beyond the performance of the individual translator”.
Ben-Ari (1992: 228) bemerkt dat “writers functioning as translators tend tot allow themselves […] more liberty, having an available personal model to which to adapt”. Feral (2006: 477) zegt over Ménard, de Franse vertaler: [H]is rewriting of Harry Potter was probably influenced by his own production, as a children‟s writer, of three witches‟ stories”.

(1) non-translation, reproduction, copying; (2) non-translation plus additional explanation; (3) replacement of a proper name by a common noun; (4) phonetic or morphological adaptation to the target language; (5) replacement by a counterpart in the target language (exonym); (6) replacement by a more widely known name from the source culture or an internationally known name with the same function; (7) replacement by another name from the target language (substitution); (8) translation (of names with a particular connotation); (9) replacement by a name with another additional connotation; (10) deletion.
