SHIPYARD CHOSEN FOR COMPLETION OF REFIT The Africa Mercy has returned to the former Cammell Laird Shipyard in England’ s North East. The resumption of her conversion into the world’ s largest nongovernmental hospital ship will take place in the new year. CEO Donovan Palmer stated how delighted he is with the lease agreement from AMP Tyne Ltd to secure a berth at the former Cammell Laird facility in Hebburn. “For many of us it feels like coming home. Many of the crew and their families live in the immediate area, so the move back means a lot to them.” Mercy Ships has identified a ship outfitting company, MSC (Maritime Services Corporation) Europe Ltd and both parties are confident the project can be completed at the Hebburn facility. A BERTH AND A BIRTH It was a crystal clear, cold winter morning as the Africa Mercy slipped her berth. The two mile journey up the River Tyne to a new berth was a simple process as the Mercy Ship was assisted by tugboats. As the Mercy Ship began the voyage up the river, Deck Manager Mark Biddell received a call on his mobile phone. Sharon, his wife, had gone into labor! A call was made on the radio from the pilot on the bridge to the one of the tugs. It was diverted from it’ s original task in order to take Mark ashore, where he was collected by a friend and rushed home. The Africa Mercy had arrived safely in her new berth at AMP Hebburn when the news came later that evening of the safe arrival of wee Sophie Louise. Her entry into the world was received with joy by the Mercy Ships crew.
ROUTE, PORTS & SERVICES Suez discount granted to boost tourism Chairman of Suez Canal Authority Admiral Ahmed Aly Fadel announced on 25 December, that the authority would continue the 2001 Suez Canal Transit Dues Tariff for into 2002.
Fadel stated that the dues had not changed for eight consecutive years, following careful study of economic trends in the international shipping markets including tankers, container vessels, bulk carriers and freight costs. The decision to freeze costs was also taken in order to boost tourism, granting 50 percent discount to tourist vessels, which is a 15 percent add-on to the previous discount in transiting dues.

K-Line S'pore to take over two routes from parent
K Line Pte Ltd Singapore (KLPL) will take over two container services between Singapore and Australia from Jan 1 as part of its Japanese parent company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha Ltd's (K Line) worldwide restructuring efforts. KLPL will 'start to do business on its own' for a service between Singapore and Western Australia, which it currently operates under a management agreement with K Line, and will take over a service between Singapore and East and South Australia - currently managed by K Line Australia - a statement released yesterday said. 'We are going towards making management more efficient by making both services entirely transferred to KLPL and by making the base operation of both services unified,' the statement said. 'Since Singapore is not only characterised as an important port but also as the starting point for both services, we are preparing our system which will enable us to respond to market changes more quickly.' Formed in August as a separate entity from the local K Line agents, KLPL operates marine transport businesses in Singapore, some under management contracts in the form of container, car carrier, tramp and tanker services on behalf of its parent, and now with two services of its own. This move is the latest in K Line's five-year restructuring plan called Spirit for 21 - New K-21, and is the start of a shift towards KLPL's future 'to do marine transportation businesses on its own which was envisioned by the foundation of KLPL,' K Line said. KLPL's deputy managing director Mr Kano told Shipping Times the companies were 'investigating the possibility' of allowing KLPL to directly run more shipping businesses from Singapore as part of K Line's broad de-centralisation moves, but said no further transfers had been decided.
Evergreen, Cosco end slot deal
Shipping giants Evergreen and Cosco will terminate their slot charter agreement in the China-Australia trade from February, opting to use existing Singapore transhipment services instead. From February 2002, Evergreen will use its slot allocation on Lloyd Triestino's CEM service connecting China and Singapore, and the ASA service jointly operated by Lloyd Triestino di Navigazione SpA, RCL and Hanjin Shipping Co to connect Australia. No reason was given for the move in a statement issued on Monday, but it says the weekly CEM service links China with Europe using eight 5,652 TEU vessels calling at Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian and Hong Kong. 'The ASA consortium, of which Lloyd Triestino is a founding member, operates four ships on this weekly service round-tripping in 28 days' between Singapore, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.

The new service will be known as the Indian Subcontinent Europe Service (ISE) and was agreed 'during the meeting held between the IES and IEX consortia on November 9 at Shekhou for framing the tonnage rationalisation programme', the partners said. ISE will offer weekly sailings connecting Colombo and Nhava Sheva with calls at Port Said, Barcelona, Felixtowe, Hamburg and Rotterdam, and is being touted as a more direct, faster and stable service with a transit time of about 18 days. The service will also cover Central and East Mediterranean ports using Port Said's feeder network, and will kick off from Colombo on Jan 6. Services offered by IES and IEX will be phased out and replaced with seven ISE ships of about 2,600 TEU size, with each partner line contributing one vessel, and the seventh shared by SCI and Zim.

The United States Coast Guard Cutter HEALY, the nation’ s largest and most technologically advanced icebreaker, commanded by Captain David J. Visneski, returned home to Seattle. Returning from a highly successful 192-day long maiden scientific voyage to the Eastern Arctic, HEALY has established herself as the nation’ s premier polar research vessel. USCGC HEALY VOYAGE INFORMATION Departing Seattle on June 12, 2001, HEALY made port calls in Costa Rica, United Kingdom, Norway and Spain. During the mission, HEALY spent nearly 3 months in the Arctic Ice Pack in addition to becoming only the second U.S. surface ship to reach the North Pole. Throughout the course of the deployment, HEALY steamed nearly 30,000 nautical miles.
With HEALY arriving at the North Pole on her maiden scientific voyage, several pictures were taken of the crew and the ship During the first phase of the mission, HEALY accomplished an unprecedented 101 dredges of the Gakkel Ridge, recovering over 8 tons of samples from the ocean floor. The second phase of the mission focused on supporting the test and evaluation of an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV), which may represent a key element of future underwater exploration in the Arctic region. During this phase, the crew performed complex launch and recovery evolutions, never before attempted. This was complicated by the extreme weather conditions encountered in the Arctic during the early fall. The results from the experiments conducted during the second phase provided valuable information to scientists about the composition of the Atlantic Layer that feeds the Arctic Ocean, as well as validating the feasibility of AUV operations in the Polar regions. HEALY will remain in her homeport of Seattle until the Spring of 2002, at which time she will sail for another extended deployment to the western Arctic.
