1. Waarom participatieve werkvormen gebruiken? Het gebruik van participatieve werkvormen in de klas of op school beoogt meerdere doelen:
Leerlingen worden zo meer betrokken bij het klas- en/of schoolgebeuren, wat hun welbevinden verhoogt: het wordt hun school en hun klas
Participatie zorgt voor leerwinst in de klas (Onderzoek ‘welbevinden, betrokkenheid en leerwinst’ – Steunpunt Gelijke Onderwijskansen, Prof. Dr. F. Laevers, Els Bertrands, Gerlinde Snoeck) Door participatie, door met elkaar in dialoog te gaan, krijgen leerlingen de gelegenheid om de eigen uitgangspunten in vraag te stellen. Stereotiepe beelden worden zo ontkracht. Diversiteit wordt zo een meerwaarde. (Onderzoek ‘ViaOPRIT 14: naar een schooltraject zonder snelheidsbeperkingen’. - Centrum voor Migratie en Interculturele Studies aan de Universiteit Antwerpen, het Intercultural, Migration and Minorities Centre en het Onderzoeksinstituut voor Arbeid en Samenleving aan de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven en het Steunpunt Diversiteit en Leren aan de Universiteit Gent.)
De leerkracht kan door het gebruik van participatieve werkvormen de lessen beter afstemmen op het doelpubliek; idem voor de schoolleiding. De kwaliteit van lessen en schoolgebeuren wordt zo beter afgestemd en dus kwalitatiever. Leerlingen die mogen participeren op hun school, zijn de actieve burgers van vandaag en morgen (zie onderzoek ‘Vlaanderen in ICCS 2009’ – S. De Groof, M. Elchardus, E. Franck, D. Kavadias)
2. Welke actoren betrekken bij deze participatieve werkvormen? Om effectieve en efficiënte participatie waar te maken, is het van groot belang de juiste partners rond de tafel te hebben. Met juiste partners bedoelen we alle betrokken actoren. Leerlingen zijn nooit alleen de betrokkenen, er zullen altijd ook volwassenen zijn die met de kwestie te maken hebben. Zij moeten dan ook mee rond de tafel gezet worden. Maak je gebruik van werkvormen in de klas? Ga als leerkracht dan ook altijd mee in dialoog. Gebruik je de werkvormen op schoolniveau? Nodig dan de directie en eventuele andere betrokkenen mee uit aan tafel. Een mooi voorbeeld hiervan zijn klankbordgroepen of werkgroepen. Deze werken als volgt:
Een bepaald probleem wordt waargenomen, en er wordt gezocht naar een vertegenwoordiging van alle betrokken actoren bij dit probleem. Een aantal leerlingen (die het probleem kennen); enkele leerkrachten … De leider van de klankbordgroep maakt een keuze en nodigt uit.
Tijdens een eerste klankbordgroepvergadering gaan alle partners het probleem verkennen: wat stelt zich en wat zijn de oorzaken. Dit doen ze zelf; zij zijn immers de experten. Vervolgens gaan zij op zoek naar enkele mogelijke oplossingen.

Voelt de klankbordgroep zich voldoende zelfzeker? Dan bepaalt ze zelf wat de beste oplossing is. In het andere geval toetsen ze de oplossing af bij hun achterban (zie verder voor mogelijke bevragingsmethodieken).
De klankbordgroep communiceert de gekozen oplossing aan de hele school: ze komen als groep naar buiten en benadrukken de betrokkenheid van alle partners.
3. Waarover laten we leerlingen mee participeren? In principe kunnen leerlingen bij alles betrokken worden. Welke bezienswaardigheden bezoeken we in Parijs? Hoe richten we het zedenleerlokaal in? Welke schoolregels zijn onduidelijk? Hoe kunnen we Smartschool verbeteren? Leerlingen willen op heel wat onderwerpen impact hebben. Maar de vraag is ook: wat wil de school? Niets is zo frustrerend als een groep leerlingen die met een fantastisch en goed doordacht idee aankomt, maar bij de directie meteen bot vangt omdat ‘Hier niets aan moet veranderen’. Daarom is het nodig dat de school of de leerkracht grenzen afbakent. Participatie vraagt grenzen: er is een kader nodig waarbinnen leerlingen kunnen participeren in alle vrijheid en waarbinnen heel wat mogelijk is. Grenzen die de school moet aangeven zijn:
Welke onderwerpen zijn voor ons NIET bespreekbaar (bepaalde regels, personeelszaken …) en WAAROM niet;
Over welke onderwerpen mogen jullie ADVIES geven en op welke onderwerpen hebben jullie rechtstreekse IMPACT (met andere woorden: wie beslist waarover?);
Hoe wordt er gecommuniceerd met elkaar; Eventueel: welk budget is beschikbaar.
4. Een selectie van participatieve werkvormen Participatieve werkvormen bevinden zich op verschillende niveau’s: Sommige werkvormen dienen om leerlingen te INFORMEREN. Kennis is macht, en daarom beschouwen we het informeren van leerlingen als een eerste en noodzakelijke stap om hen te laten participeren. Andere werkvormen hebben tot doel om leerlingen te BEVRAGEN. Ze mogen hun mening geven, wat een veelheid aan verschillende opinies oplevert zonder daarom samen tot een unaniem gedragen voorstel te komen. En tenslotte geven we ook werkvormen mee om leerlingen te laten MEE PRATEN. Op dit niveau zijn leerlingen gelijke partners en wordt er samen een beslissing genomen. De impact van de leerlingen is op dit niveau het hoogste.

a) Werkvormen om leerlingen te informeren Cup Surprise:
Om de beurt mag één speler van jullie groep een briefje komen kiezen op het centrale punt
De speler keert terug naar de tafel en leest het briefje uitvoerig met de groep
Vinden jullie de schrijffout? Roep dan luid ‘Bingo!’ en jullie winnen de Cup Speciale
Vinden jullie geen enkele schrijffout? Stuur dan snel een andere speler om een nieuw briefje. Het oude briefje brengen jullie terug mee.
De winnende groep wint de prijs. Opgelet: niet elk briefje bevat een typfout. Wanneer je ze dus niet vindt, kan je beter een nieuw briefje gaan halen.
Een overzicht van enkele originele promotie-acties:
Een boodschap op het bord schrijven (of een affiche nalaten op het bord) na de lesuren, zodat leerlingen de volgende dag verrast worden Affiches op de binnenkant van de toiletdeuren hangen Een auto met een boodschap op of in, in het midden van de speelplaats parkeren
Je boodschap laten omroepen door leerlingen
De boodschap achterlaten op hun bureaublad van alle computers op school …
b) Werkvormen om leerlingen ideeën te laten geven Enveloppemoment
Elke klas krijgt op een bepaald tijdstip (bv. in het eerste lesuur) een enveloppe van de leerkracht, het secretariaat of de leerlingenraad Iemand leest voor wat erin staat: dit is een duidelijk geformuleerde vraag waaover je de mening wil weten van de leerlingen De klas bespreekt de vraag gedurende 5 minuten en formuleert een duidelijk antwoord erop
Na 5 minuten vatten de leerlingen samen wat ze besproken hebben Iemand noteert dit op het blanco blad dat bij in de enveloppe zit
Die enveloppe wordt terg binnengebracht op een vaste plaats OF vanuit elke klas wordt één leerling afgevaardigd om met de enveloppe naar een centrale plaats te komen waar de verschillende meningen verder zullen besproken worden

Ga met je groep op stap in het klaslokaal of op school OF doorblader samen je schoolagenda of het schoolreglement
Fotografeer elke plaats of elke zaak die jullie zouden willen aanpakken
Stel per gemaakte blad een suggestie op: hoe jullie zouden willen dat het was
Geef zowel fototoestel als suggestieblad binnen
Placemat
Zet verschillende mensen samen rond een placemat (een blad dat bestaat uit verschillende vakken en één centraal vak)
Zoek eerst allemaal individueel een antwoord op de vraag die op de placemat staat
Noteer je eigen antwoord in je eigen vak: het vak dat voor je ligt
Heeft iedereen z’n antwoord genoteerd? Dan probeer je met zijn allen een consensus te vinden Noteer de consensus in het vak midden op het blad
Schrijfgesprek
Neem elk een balpen bij de hand In het lokaal liggen verschillende flappen verspreid met op elke flap één onderwerp op. Enkele voorbeelden kunnen zijn: o Lessen en toetsen o Sfeer op school o Omgaan met elkaar o Schoolinfrastructuur o Schoolreglement o … Loop rond in stilte in het lokaal en noteer op elke flap jouw mening over dat onderwerp: wat vind je er goed aan, wat zou je willen veranderen … Jullie mogen schriftelijk reageren op elkaars reacties. Zo kan je aangeven dat je het met iemand eens bent of net niet. De begeleider zal af en toe een bijvraag noteren. Zie je zo’n vraag staan, dan mag je op die vraag een antwoord formuleren. Na enkele minuten wordt het schrijfgesprek afgerond en worden de flappen opgehaald.
c) Werkvormen om leerlingen te laten mee praten Levensloop
Teken op het gele blad een tijdslijn van één schooljaar (centraal op het blad)
Bespreek nu samen met de groep je schooljaar

Boven de tijdslijn noteer je alle topmomenten van de groep
Onder de tijdslijn noteer je alle flopmomenten van de groep
Alle meningen mogen erop, maar de meest voorkomende worden met fluostift geaccentueerd
Een chocotoffe dag
Bij het binnenkomen van de school of klas, krijgt elke leerling een Chocotoff cadeau. Je wenst hem/haar een ‘chocotoffe dag’
Je geeft volgende opdracht mee: het snoepje mag je opeten, maar het papiertje moet je gebruiken om te stemmen op één van de mogelijke keuzes
Alle mogelijke keuzes waartussen gestemd kan worden, zijn elk op een afzonderlijke stembus gekleefd
De leerlingen deponeren hun papiertje dus in de stembus naar keuze
Nadat iedereen gepasseerd is, tel je de papiertjes en maak je de meest gekozen optie bekend
Automechanica
De leerlingen krijgen een afbeelding van een autobus
Beantwoord bij de bus deze vragen met de hele groep: Bij de plaatsen op de bus: wie is op school/in de klas diegene die de bus bestuurt? Wie zit op de eerste rij? Wij zit helemaal achterin? Bij de motor: wat voor soort bus is je school/je klas? Bij de wielen van de bus: wat loopt er op jullie school/ in de klas op wieltjes? Bij de putten in de weg: wat zijn de putten op de weg voor jullie school/klas? Bij de uitlaat: wat zijn de belangrijkste verwezenlijkingen van jullie school/klas voor dit schooljaar? Bij de wegwijzers: wat willen jullie nog graag bereiken dit schooljaar?
Noteer de antwoorden steeds op de juiste plaats op het blad
