Course Description

The notion of language, system and practice, the relation of language and society. Language as a system of signs. Language acquisition. The main functions of language. The communication. Language and cognition. Variability in languages. The origin of language. Language typology, genetic relations of languages, language universals. The stratification of languages, historical changes in languages. Linguistics, its topic, themes of investigation, its place among the different sciences. The methodology of linguistics: theory, description, history. Layers in language. Auxiliary sciences for linguistics, its borderlines. The domains of theoretical and applied linguistics. General questions, object, history, branches of phonetics, connections with other disciplines. Phonetics and phonology. Mechanism of the speech, parts of the spoken chain. The physiological, physical and acoustic description of the spoken chain. Function of the speech organs. The phoneme, the sound and their system. The system of the Hungarian vowels and consonants. Phonologic correlations. Realization of phonologic rules and sound juncture features in the speech. Suprasegmental elements and constructions. Branches of applied phonetics. The theoretical and empirical basis of lexicology and lexicography. The semantic background of words and lexical units. The volume of the Hungarian vocabulary. The classification of words from various aspects. The vocabulary of the social dialects. Types of dictionaries. The structure and form of an entry. Various sorts of interpretation in an entry. Differences in editing traditional and edictionaries. Concordance, lemmatisation, frequency lists.

The possibility of computer translation. Computational dictionaries and lexical databases. The latest results of corpus linguistics, types of corpus, the most significant Hungarian and foreign corpuses. The Hungarian workshops of computer linguistics.
