LA STRADA 2010 – It is not the destination, but the journey leading to it that is important. The LA STRADA 2010 project is a loose continuation of the first international project on this theme, which was first presented to the public in 2008 at the Karlovy Vary Art Gallery under the curatorial direction of the Finnish artist and curator Kirsimaria E. Törönen- Ripatti. After a period of two years, this project returns once again to Czech exhibition venues expanded by four more Czech artists. The reason for the return in this setup is to present the idea of the journeys of ten artists working with diverse media, but with a similar way of thinking. The journey as a common denominator of the works of the selected artists does not, in this case, merely play a thematic role. Instead it represents the spiritual aspect of their life philosophies, which is reflected in their works of art. It is a journey which each of the exhibited artists has already undertaken and transposed their experience into their works.

On her travels through various countries Erla S. Haraldsdóttir finds urban neighbourhoods, whose originally impersonal, purely architectural state has in some way been altered by the life journeys of its occupants. It is a visual social study which bears witness to the everyday lives of new inhabitants in particular, of their search for a way of life in a new environment, and about the unstoppable independent passing of time on the same level as the original urban organization. The fragile journey of Aleš Hnízdil, who in his installation ‘Silence in Space’ developed a wide range of expressions of the space he basically shares with anyone on this planet and beyond. One can enter this space through one’s consciousness. It is a journey leading to relaxation, meditation, an interweaving of consciousness, mutual empathy, a concentration of thoughts. Infinite silence in space opens the gateway to one’s own consciousness as well as to other worlds.

In his unofficial photographs, the photographer Pavel Hokynek provides a record of unconventional cultural and social events, which he has marked with the original seal of his own subliminal perception, which in time led him to enhance the atmosphere of the captured moment using a highly original technique. The resultant photographic image is quite unlike the original documentary photograph, but expresses all the more strongly the photographer’s feel for the given situation and how he sees it.
Journeys through the landscapes of various countries lead Janne Laine to discover the genius loci of hitherto completely unfamiliar landscapes. By becoming acquainted with a new place, he discovers its hidden meaning, becomes a part of it and it enters into his imagination. No Man’s Land opens up its secrets to him, which spill over into his photographic images of the landscape and make their way in series of photographs to the receptive viewer, shrouded in the form of his joint experience with the landscape. The depiction of the human body in the photographs and video projections by Monique Mees takes us, in various original ways, on a journey through her individual approach to the depicted themes. The scenes taking place in her video projections provoke the viewer, fascinating and confronting us with their suggestive rendition. When Jan Pohribný undertakes his journeys to discover landscapes and their genius loci he already has an idea of how to harness their energy projected into his own interpretation. In it he discovers its original purpose and ancient rituals, which he influences with his own vision, into which, in the spirit of landart, he installs people and objects, which become a part of the landscape. In Jan Pohribný’s photographs real natural scenery intertwines with the spirit of the place.

Míla Preslová’s photographic series depict her wanderings along the complex paths of relationships with those near to her. In her works, she journeys to her ancestors, traces her friendships over the course of time, and the history of the origins and cohabitation of her own family. In her photographs, she expresses her private, and, at times, intimate feelings, which are incorporated into both familiar and random scenes. A series of engraved metal sheets with the motif of the city plan of Medina, where the artist Kirsimaria E. Törönen-Ripatti spent her youth, represents a journey through memories. This period, so important for one’s perception and awareness of one’s own identity, gave her an understanding of the Islamic world, which differs diametrically from that of Scandinavia. Via the city plans in her pictures, she journeys through the labyrinth of her memories. In his photographs and video works Christoph Runne captures immigrants living in Vancouver, Canada. The portraits of these inhabitants draw attention to the existence of a community, which lives anonymously and almost unnoticed in a majority society. Through his artistic testimony, he personifies marginalized individuals, who are often portrayed negatively by the media, and bears witness to their true lives. The pictures of Jan Samec are characterized by a communication between the external world and the artist’s approach to it. The paintings included in the

OUTSIDE/INSIDE series contain depictions of landscapes accentuated by an original magical approach. Like Jan Pohribný, he works with light, both in his paintings and in his three-dimensional luminous object ‘Blue Dream – White Message’ which bears a clear message. It is not the destination but the journey leading to it that is important. An experience gained from searching, from loss and despair, from the joy of discovery and awakening, from the mystery of occurrences and coincidences, bygone reminders of returning, unexpected encounters, compilations, assimilations, an analysis and synthesis of thoughts and concepts, a passion and a desire for the communicability and communicativeness of a work, such is the journey. It is always important, even if it does not always lead directly to the destination. However, each time it enriches us with encounters with people, with a landscape, it brings new experiences, refines and clarifies our thinking. It enables us to look into the lives of others and makes us aware of our own existence together with the world which surrounds us and which does not always favour all equally. It brings an understanding of other wayfarers journeying through the world, be it terrestrial, future, imaginary or irrational.

Erla S. Haraldsdóttir is an Icelandic artist who explores various geographically diverse environments through photographs, drawings and videos. She subsequently combines these three media resulting in video animation and photographic collages.
Její dílo umožňuje vstoupit do paralelní dotvořené reality a zároveň otevírá zajímavá sociální a kulturní témata k diskusi.
In recent years, Erla S. Haraldsdóttir travelled through Scandinavia, Europe and America. During her travels she intentionally sought out urban locations transformed by global changes. The locations she is interested in are urban conurbations which bear traces of disruptive or enriching influences, which erase the original visual appearance of the places in question. The previously mundane scenery of a certain place changes, under the influence of a new population inhabiting the same place, through the layers of emerging and disappearing cultures and events. Thus emerges an alternative urban landscape, into whose multicultural version the artist enables us to look into. Her works allow us to enter a parallel, subsequently recreated reality while also opening up interesting social and cultural themes for discussion. By addressing these themes, Haraldsdóttir has introduced an aesthetic diction, which presents the possibility of another, as yet possibly less comprehensible world within the usual everyday world. Erla S. Haraldsdóttir was born in Reykjavík. She studied art in Gothenburg and Stockholm and at the San Francisco Art Institute. For more than ten years she has been exhibiting her works at solo and group exhibitions in Iceland, Finland, Sweden and other European countries, as well as in America. Her works are to be found in Icelandic and other, namely Scandinavian, art collections. She has taught at art schools in Scandinavia, Germany, the US and Cuba.
Žije a pracuje v Reykjavíku a v Berlíně. Haraldsdóttir lives and works in Reykjavík and Berlin.

Aleš Hnízdil is a sculptor, who concluded his studies at the School of Sculpture and Stone Masonry in Hořice with the absolutorium examination at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and later at the GHK Hochschule fur bildende Kunst in Kassel, Germany. He has been teaching long-term at technical and pedagogical universities. His works are to be found in Holland, Germany and Slovakia, as well as the Czech Republic. Scrolls from his project ‘Aspects of Consciousness’, which came into being during the years 2001 – 2007, are owned by various personages and friends of the artist throughout the world.
Lze do něho vstoupit pouze skrze vlastní vědomí. V současné době žije a pracuje v Měchenicích u Prahy.
Hnízdil’s most recent project, which is also part of the LA STRADA 2010 project, is ‘Silence in Space’. It is represented by an installation in which objects and pictures intermingle and are accompanied by the slide show ‘The Touch of Silence in an Empty Space’. The project is based on the state of consciousness of each person searching, consciously or unwittingly, for relaxation, peace of mind, or concentration by looking at the sky which surrounds them. This aspect is the interconnecting element of the state of consciousness of all people anywhere on the Earth. Silence in space is an impalpable place in the atmosphere. It surrounds the Earth and reaches beyond its boundaries. It can only be accessed via one’s own consciousness. We can experience it at any hour of day or night, in any season. We perceive it as a place of relaxation – a place where we can focus our mind – a place for meditation – for meeting – the interweaving of consciousness – a place where we can enter a different space, or spaces – far beyond the boundaries of our solar system – like a gateway leading to infinity or a gateway for entering our own consciousness. Each one of us can thus travel virtually in the infinity of space as well as within oneself, and return there and reside there repeatedly. Thus one can consciously connect with anyone on Earth – feel and empathize with them through this vast, infinite silence in space. Aleš Hnízdil has exhibited his works at solo and group exhibitions in the Czech Republic, Holland, Germany and Italy. He has participated in art symposia in Prague and Klenová, and in Novara, Italy. He has created performances in various places in Prague and Klenová. Hnízdil currently lives and works in Měchenice near Prague.

Vyhledává a navštěvuje nekonvenční divadelní festivaly, sleduje nahodilá pouliční představení i neobvyklé performance. Pavel Hokynek žije a pracuje v Hřebči u Prahy.
Pavel Hokynek’s path to the final appearance of his photographs is a complex one and to begin with even he doesn’t know what awaits him at its end. The photographer observes, with an almost voyeuristic captivation, street scenes which are on the periphery of the interest of the cultured majority society. He seeks out and visits unconventional theatre festivals, watches random street theatre and unusual performance art. His repertoire includes pictures of street demonstrations. Hokynek’s documentary photographs make up an important chronicle, which addresses both participants and those who remember the emotions of the given moment. They provide a testimony of recent times, which are gradually being replaced by a new way of accepting the reality of life. It is not, however, reportage photography as we know it from the media. After a certain period Hokynek returns to his reportage photographs and reworks them using various photographic and other atypical methods. To alter the original negatives and positives of his photographs in a highly original way, he uses colour, chemicals, multiple exposures, and the distortion or disruption of the given photograph. Tools used include a razor, sticky tape, a needle or any other object which happens to be at hand at that moment. The reworking is entirely spontaneous and stems from an inner feeling. Only when a picture has thus been defiled, does the final form of the photographic image containing the artist’s statement emerge. Pavel Hokynek was born in Bratislava. His desire to study photography at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts remained unfulfilled, and he therefore studied at a technical university. However, all his life he has been creating photographs using his own technique, distanced from official groups of photographers. This style of his has subconsciously evolved through his knowledge of physics, chemistry and optical effects. Life on the verge between an official profession and his own artistic creations has made Hokynek a highly original artist creating notable statements. Pavel Hokynek lives and works in Hřebeč near Prague.

The visual artist Janne Laine was born in Tampere, Finland. Not only is he an original artist, but he also works as a photographer and art printer at the renowned Finnish Himmelblau printmaking studio. In addition to solo exhibitions in Scandinavia and Australia, he has been involved in a number of group exhibitions throughout the world.
On sám to cítí spíše jako určitý stav mysli.
At a glance we perceive the works of Janne Laineho as Romantic landscapes and although his works have the visual appearance of photographs, the technique used is heliogravure, which combines the qualities of photography and printmaking. It is not important to the artist that the overall outcome looks like a graphic work as he himself perceives it more as a certain state of mind.
Janne Laine usually exhibits his works in series as he wants his pictures to be perceived as part of a larger story. A single picture may not reveal all the relevant information. He is not interested in familiar landscapes, which are loaded with too many meanings. He travels around the world and with his camera viewfinder searches for scenes, which subsequently form the basis of his graphic prints. It is an additional reward for the artist when the viewer finds his or her own space, via his or her own imagination, in the message conveyed by his photographic images. When he is in unfamiliar surroundings abroad, Laine sees the landscape differently. New feelings come to his mind and it is like watching a film as an impartial observer and he begins to take photographs. The artist is in direct contact with the place and at the given moment he becomes an integral part of it. It is a very private relationship based on personal perception and feeling, revealing that which is only sensed beyond the visible horizon.
Janne Laine absolvoval svá umělecká studia na Škole umění a komunikace v Tampere.
Where in the world his pictures originate is not important to him. He is convinced that landscapes existed before mankind and that they will survive us. He aims to achieve maximum alienation so as not to be burdened by tradition or knowledge, and to enable him to merge with the landscape. Transformation and travelling provide him with the subtle balance between life and death.
Žije a pracuje v Tampere ve Finsku.

Rodilá Kanaďanka Monique Mees pochází z Vancouveru, kde žije a pracuje. Výtvarné vzdělání získala na dvou kontinentech, v Britské Kolumbii v kanadském Vancouveru a na Akademii výtvarných umění v německém Karlsruhe.
Canadian-born Monique Mees comes from Vancouver, where she lives and works. She studied art on two continents; in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and at the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts in Germany.
Videonahrávka přináší jakési nepatřičné sledování, jež zkoumá naše konvenční nahlížení na probíhající děje a zároveň svým sugestivním podáním určuje míru naší schopnosti empatie a pochopení. Provokujícím způsobem nás vtahuje přímo do probíhajícího děje a přináší novou zkušenost jeho nazírání.
The use of diverse methods of execution and various techniques are characteristic of her works. Her exploration of the human body, the female body in particular, confronts the viewer with the reality commonly used in its portrayal, often bordering on what is usually culturally acceptable. Her video projections present us with a kind of improper observation, which explores our conventional perception of the viewed events and, through her suggestive rendition, simultaneously determines the level of our ability to empathize and understand. In a provocative manner, the artist draws us directly into the scenes being viewed and provides us with a new experience of how we view them.

Jan Pohribný žije a pracuje v Úněticích u Prahy.
Jan Pohribný is considered to be one of the most important Czech photographers depicting landscape. He is a graduate of the Department of Artistic Photography at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague. During his studies he took part in a study programme at the University of Applied Arts in Helsinki. He has been working as a freelance photographer since 1986, when he completed his studies. In addition to this he also teaches at the Institute of Creative Photography at the Silesian University in Opava. His works are to be found in the collections of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, the Moravian Gallery in Brno, the North Bohemian Museum in Liberec, and abroad in the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Jan Pohribný’s approach to depiction is very specific. He is influenced by landart and works with space, focusing on creating objects in the landscape. He creates and inserts into the space he is photographing, plots, figures and objects which stem from his own perception. The landscape being photographed becomes a means of fulfilling his vision. The artist’s photographic work is a journey meandering between the spiritual and the material. In his photographs, Jan Pohribný depicts the magical fusion of Mother Earth and the heavens. He very sensitively perceives the connection with nature and unveils the connection with landscape. When venturing on a journey in search of new discoveries, he sets off equipped with his own imagination. At the place itself, he takes photographs of his own interpretation of the given space. In his photographs he uses often luminography. He photographs the landscape on location following prior preparation, and virtually does not alter it in any way thereafter. He believes that the energy of the place and the creative power of the photographer are translated into the resulting picture. The interplay of these factors, which is conveyed to the viewer, is important to him. He does not consider himself to be a landscape photographer as such, even though landscape is the central theme of his photographic images. He believes that today people, those living in cities in particular, have lost contact with the landscape and are unable to perceive the energy which emanates from it, and the subtle nuances, which connect us with it. Jan Pohribný lives and works in Únětice near Prague.

Míla Preslová absolvovala Akademii výtvarných umění v Praze, kde studovala v malířském ateliéru u profesora Jiřího Sopka a v intermediálním ateliéru profesora Milana Knížáka. Realizovala samostatné výstavy v České republice, v Rakousku, v Německu a na Slovensku. Autorka se věnuje výhradně médiu fotografie, kde většinou využívá sama sebe a své blízké jako modely. Její fotografické cykly jsou vždy velice osobní. Pozorný pozorovatel může postupně vyčíst z jejích děl silné vzájemné vztahy k vlastní rodině, příbuzným i nejbližším přátelům. Sdělení jejích fotografických obrazů mapuje její spletitou pouť životem a lze z nich vyčíst hloubku intimních vztahů k vyobrazeným osobám i jí samotné. Žije a pracuje v Praze.

Míla Preslová graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, where she studied in the painting studio of Professor Jiří Sopko and the intermedia studio of Professor Milan Knížák. She has had solo exhibitions in the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany and Slovakia. Preslová focuses exclusively on photography, and usually uses herself and those closest to her as subjects. Her photographic series are always highly personal. From her works, the attentive observer can gradually discern strong mutual relationships with her own family, relatives and closest friends. The message of her photographic images traces her complex journey through life and it is possible to discern the depth of intimate relationships with those depicted and with herself. Her pictures include her relationship with her family in the photographic series ‘My Eyes of Sisters’, the relationship between her and a man in ‘He’, ‘When Life’s not at Stake’, and ‘Pointed Elbows’, the feelings of a creative woman taking care of a well-functioning family in ‘Housewife’, ‘Knitting’ and the feeling of solitude in ‘I Will Dissipate’, and her relationship to landscape depicted in the ‘Colours’ and ‘Stones’ series. In Preslová’s conceptual series one can also trace the current state of her inner world at a given time. This flow of life can be carefully observed in her works. However, it is necessary to arrive and leave on tiptoe so as not to disturb it. The artist’s most important theme is the highly personal microcosm of her own family, tracing her emotional ties and her place within their structure, which is determined by experienced family events. The ‘Dream’, ‘Two to Two’ and ‘Blossom’ series are an artistic testimony of this depiction of one’s own identity. Her most recent photographic project entitled ‘Beyond the Horizon’, also focuses on family-related themes. In it, through her characteristic omnipresent humanity, she portrays the safety of private life, sheltered from the distant horizon of the, at times, incomprehensible contemporary world. Míla Preslová’s works can be found in the collections of the National Gallery in Prague, the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava, the Center for Contemporary Arts Prague, the Aleš South-Bohemian Gallery in Hluboká nad Vltavou, the Neue Galerie Graz and in private collections. She lives and works in Prague.

The Finnish artist Kirsimaria E. Törönen-Ripatti studied at the Art Studio of the University of Helsinki (Helsingin yliopisto), and at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam (Hogeschool Rotterdam).
Finská umělkyně Kirsimaria E. Törönen-Ripatti vstřebávala své vzdělání v Uměleckém studiu Helsinské univerzity (Helsingin yliopisto), a na Umělecké akademii v Rotterdamu (Hogeschool Rotterdam). Ke studiu výtvarného umění ji však přivedla životní zkušenost z dětství, možná už ranného mládí, kdy pobývala v Iráku a Saudské Arábii.
Her experiences from childhood or rather early youth, when she lived in Iraq and Saudi Arabia, led TörönenRipatti to the study of art. During her sojourn in the Islamic world she was obliged to adapt to its traditions and accept its different cultural customs, both as a foreigner and as a woman. At that time, Finland was for her a distant country, which she recalled as a land of various shades of green. This period, lasting several years, had a fundamental influence on the artist. The confrontation of Islamic and Western cultures and identities became an integral part of her personal, and, later also artistic life. Works created during the years 2004 – 2005 under the title of Medina are an artistic return to the Arab environment, which influenced Törönen-Ripatti’s identity so profoundly. The original series of drawings in Indian ink were later reworked into the ‘Metal Medina’ series – metal sheets on which the labyrinth of the depicted city emerges. The maze of streets and alleyways of the city plan, which at first sight appears difficult to decipher, is enhanced with motifs from Islamic architecture. On closer and more careful observation one can find routes connecting important individual points, leading out from the centre in all directions and subsequently returning to the starting point, via detours to various places hidden away in memories. The Medina series is for Kirsimaria a journey back, a return to the past, which has become an inseparable part of her personality.

Christoph Runne is a German-born artist living and working in Canada, where he studied film at Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts. He is a significant, active member of the local arts scene.
In his works, Runne employs various media, through which he presents the viewer with a wide range of controversial and often disturbing issues. He is not afraid of bold statements in an age marked by political correctness on the one hand and political, social and ecological indifference of the majority society, on the other.
Série portrétů Christopha Runneho, sřetězených obrazů, je kombinací sociální představy s klasickým portrétem. Navazuje na způsob portrétování holandských mistrů a zároveň dvojími portrétními snímky imituje policejní fotografie. Svým dílem řeší autor sociální otázky i identitu.
Christoph Runne’s portraits, a series of looping still images, combine social representation with classical portraiture. They refer to the style of portraiture of the Dutch masters while at the same time mimicking police mugshots with their dual headshots. In his works the artist addresses social issues and identity.
The portraits of Vancouver’s disputed downtown eastside residents are portraits of men and women living as outcasts of society. They are marginalized, condemned to live on the fringe of society, and almost invisible, except when they emerge into the collective consciousness through the media. However, the media’s presentation and context leave little room for interpretation and are usually only a reinforcement of social stereotypes.
Každá společnost monitoruje svůj oficiální společenský a kulturní obraz vyobrazováním důležitých a úctyhodných osobností. Christophe Runne reviduje hierarchii těchto kulturních konvencí. Používá portrétování k tomu, aby nám otevřel jinou interpretaci, mnohem důstojnější, zdvořilejší a ohleduplnou ke svému subjektu.
Every society records its official social and cultural image through the portrayal of important and estimable individuals. Christoph Runne reverses the hierarchy of these cultural conventions. He uses portraiture to offer us a different interpretation, which is much more dignified, respectful and considerate towards its subject.
Světlo v „Portrétech“ připomíná holandské mistry; postavy vystupují z temného pozadí do světla, s výrazem, mimikou, gestikulací a řečí těla jemně odtajňují osobnosti formálně neviditelných mužů a žen.
The light in these ‘portraits’ is reminiscent of the Dutch masters; figures come out of the dark background into the light. Their expressions, gestures, and body language subtly unveil the characters of these officially invisible men and women.
V kultuře, kde média zveřejněním určují společenské postavení a významnost, jsou Runneho „Portréty“ silnou a velmi zajímavou uměleckou výpovědí.
In a culture where media presentation determines social standing and significance, Runne’s ‘portraits’ are a powerful and very interesting artistic statement.

Obrazová poselství Jana Samce otevírají vidění a pocitům vnímavého pozorovatele netušené či pouze zlehýnka tušené vnitřní prostory a vzdálené obzory. Gros výtvarníka spočívá, kromě keramiky a kresby, v malbě.
The visual message of Jan Samec opens up to the sight and feelings of the attentive observer, unknown, or only vaguely sensed inner spaces and distant horizons. Painting, in addition to ceramics and drawings, make up the bulk of this artist’s work.
Do výtvarně pojatých fragmentů krajiny vkládá prostřednictvím symbolů svůj pocit z jejího zkoumání. Vede nás cestou poznání uspořádání přírodních zákonitostí s vkladem vlastního vnímání nastoleného v daném čase a prostoru. Série velkoformátových obrazů a světelných objektů z cyklu OUTSIDE/INSIDE zařazených do společné expozice LA STRADA, jsou přirozeným vyústěním tohoto procesu. Autor zde převedl duchovní rozměr svých děl z malby do trojrozměrné světelné instalace. Jeho obrazy i světelný objekt „Modrý sen – bílá zpráva“ pod společným názvem OUTSIDE/INSIDE ruší neviditelnou, avšak tušenou hranici mezi vnějším a vnitřním vesmírným prostorem. Jan Samec, absolvent Střední průmyslové školy keramické v Bechyni a Filozofické univerzity Karlovy v Praze má ve svém profesním životopise přes padesátsamostatných a kolektivních výstav. Jan Samec žije a tvoří v Karlových Varech.
Landscape and its interconnection with his own imagination provide unceasing inspiration for the artist. With the use of symbols, he incorporates his sensation of his exploration of the landscape into artistically conceived landscape fragments. He leads us on a journey of discovery of the system of natural order with an input of his own perception presented in a given time and space. The large format pictures and luminous objects from the OUTSIDE/INSIDE series included in the LA STRADA exhibition, are a natural result of this process. Here the artist has transferred the spiritual dimension of his works from his paintings to a three-dimensional luminous installation. His paintings and luminous object ‘Blue Dream – White Message’, both bearing the title OUTSIDE/INSIDE, disrupt the invisible and yet sensed boundary between the outer and inner cosmic space. Jan Samec, graduate of the Secondary School of Decorative Arts and Ceramics in Bechyně and the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague, has exhibited his works at more than fifty solo and group exhibitions. His works are to be found in many collections of leading galleries in the Czech Republic and abroad. He is involved in the preparation and organization of various art symposia, in which he participates both as curator and artist. For the last six years he has been the Director of the Karlovy Vary Art Gallery. Jan Samec lives and works in Karlovy Vary.
