Botanický průvodce okolím Ústí n. L.
Botanical guide to the surroundings of Ústí n. L.
Bertino údolí, letní kino, výletní restaurace Větruše včetně jejího okolí a nově vybudovaná cyklistická stezka podél Labe mezi Děčínem, Ústím nad Labem a Litoměřicemi.
L. has started to transform from an industrial into a tourist centre. The places in the town which are of any interest or are attractive to tourists have been made good or redeveloped, i.e. Berta´s Valley, the openair cinema, the Větruše excursion restaurant with its surroundings, and the newly built cycle path along the River Labe between Děčín, Ústí nad Labem and Litoměřice. The countryside in and around the town can also offer a lot of compelling things. Attractive places which offer many botanical species as well as tourist experiences are easily accessible from the town; they become the target of excursions for experts and appealing trips for the city population. This guide will take you to some of them.

Cestou nás upoutají vzrostlé lípy srdčité, javor babyka, jasan ztepilý, jeřáb břek.V podrostu nalezneme hájovou květenu, např., plicník tmavý, jaterník podléšku, strdivku jednokvětou, hrachor černý, , řimbabu chocholičnatou i vzácnější okrotici bílou, lilii zlatohlavou, hladýš širolistý, plamének přímý .

tiích jižního svahu i dubohabřiny. Z chladnomilnějších a vlhkomilnějších druhů najdeme i v dolní třetině údolí kyčelnici devítilistou, k. cibulkonosnou, měsíčnici vytrvalou a udatnu lesní; žádný z nich nepronikl ani do nejvyšších partií Českého středohoří na protějším levém břehu Labe. Tyto vzácné biotopy hostí chráněné druhy např. kavyl Ivanův, bělozářku liliovitou, hvězdnici zlatovlásek, hvozdík sivý, kosatec bezlistý a další.
Časté je i plodné rajče. V první zatáčce serpentin odbočuje do Bertina údolí. Serpentíny byly vybudovány v 60. letech a později doplněny výsadbou dřevin.

V časném jarním období v bylinném podrostu pod olšemi, jasany a střemchami kvetou tisíce bledulí jarních.
Na svazích nad značenou cestou z Telnice do Zadní Telnice převažují bučiny, podél potoka mokřadní druhy pcháč různolistý, štírovník bažinný, violka bahenní, mokrýš vstřícnolistý.

Značená cesta křižuje silnici a prochází tzv. cvičnou loukou do Adolfova. Vedle běžných druhů roste na cvičné louce rozchodník nachový, hvozdík lesní, hrachor horský a poměrně početná populace lilie cibulkonosné spolu s hojným aromatickým koprníkem štětinolistým. Rostou zde suchopýr pochvatý, vachta trojlistá, rosnatka okrouhlolistá, tučnice obecná, prstnatec májový, kosatec sibiřský, sítina ostrokvětá, všivec lesní a vítod douškolistý, na sušších místech hvozdík lesní.

Route I: Vaňov – National Natural Monument Vrkoč – Vaňov Waterfall – the River Labe hills – Větruše (follow the route of the nature trail using the tourist markings) The national natural monument (NNM) Vrkoč, where the route begins, as well as the Vaňov waterfall, are points of interest in terms of geology rather than landscape. The unique structure of the basalt vein of Vrkoč with its columns arranged in the shape of a fan was exposed during construction works on the railway track. A metal plate installed on the peak of the rock offers a view of the River Labe valley. The Vaňov surroundings are characterised by the occurrence of Irish Saxifrage. It only grows in the Czech Republic, and plentiful populations are only famous from the area around Semily. The marked tourist route ascends steeply at the beginning and, after a while, on the hillside it ascends moderately passing debris forests with small rock-gardens and debris with Oaks and Horn-beams, and Rose Acacias planted in some places. On the way, our attention is caught by a mighty Small-leaved Lime, or Field Maple, Common Ash, or a Wild Service Tree. The undergrowth features grove vegetation, such as Suffolk Lungwort, Liverwort, Wood Melick, Black Pea, Corymbflower Tansy as well as the rarer Helleborine, Martagon Lilly, Sermountain, and Ground Virginsbower. The driest places also display European Dwarf Cherry and species of herbal undergrowth such as Bloody Cranesbill and Red Spire. Obviously, the path used to display far fewer bushes than today.
Route II: Čeřeniště – Natural Monument Babinské Meadows – Varhošť – Martinská Wall – Čeřeniště (to get to Čeřeniště it is suitable to use a car or a bus) The natural monument Babinské Meadows is situated south east of the village, south of the road towards Rýdeč; it is best accessible from the road . The fancy mosaic of wet to dry meadows avoided melioration only because there used to be a military zone here. Important species are Ladybells, Marsch Helleborine, Creeping Willow, Centaurea pseudophrygia, etc. Regular mowing promotes the many rare species. The ascending route across the Babinské meadows brings us to a road leading to the village of Lbín. At the peak we turn towards Varhošť following the marked route. Varhošť is a hill featuring a metal lookout tower offering a wonderful circular view. Some older literature also mentions rare species, i.e. Irish Saxifrage and Traunsteinera globosa (L.) Reichenb. Siberian Iris, Spring Snowflake and Trollius altissimus are still seen in the meadows and the foothills. Apart from the route, there is the so-called Jesuit Trench, a valley which starts about 0.4 km east-north-east of the peak of Varhošť. On the right bank of the nameless brook about 0.5 km north-west of Varhošť , Tertiary diatom slate protrudes to the surface accompanied by abundant remains of flora, rare fish fossils (Varhostichtys brevis) and other animals; of the many types of woody species we can easily recognise, for example, the leaves and seeds of maples. The place cannot be accessed from the road. The road from the foothill of Varhošť to Čeřeniště runs through a large and for a long time

stabilised landslide area. A big landslide, which resulted in the origin of the Martinská Wall, is still easily seen in the local terrain. In the spaces between the boulders, east of the road, cold air accumulates in some places. Granular snow or ice can still be found here as late as in April („icy pieces“). At the foothill of the rock wall Irish Saxifrage is quite abundant, more rarely Everlasting Pea, Pigeon Scabious, etc. The upper part of the Martinská Wall can be most easily accessed via an unmarked path, diverting from the road at the edge of the wood not far from the place where the road starts steeply descending to Čeřeniště. It is quite difficult to walk, and in some places it is quite dangerous for young children. It is best to use the same path when coming back. Čeřeniště features a few large limes, some of them protected.
Route III: Brná – Průčelská Canyon – Sluneční Hillside – Nová Ves – Střekov (along the nature trial Pod Vysokým Ostrým) (Both the start and finish are on municipal bus routes.) The Průčelská Canyon is a deep and asymmetric valley. A few weirs on the Průčelský Tařice skalní (Aurinia saxatilis)

Brook were built to stop floodwater in the 1820´s. They are full of mud and sludge, overgrown by alder-trees and therefore not functional. Along the brook we can see various types of Corydalis Cava, Yellow Anemone, Wood Anemone, Petasites Alba, Large Bittercress, and Toothwort. The slopes display a mosaic of open boulder debris, debris forests and beech woods, at higher altitudes on the southern slopes even oaks – and hornbeams. Of hygrophylous and cold loving species we can find Drooping Bittercress even on the bottom third of the valley as well as Coral Root, Perennial Honesty and Goat’s Beard; none of them have managed to penetrate to the highest parts of the Bohemian Uplands on the opposite bank of the River Labe. Beech woods and debris woods on the foothill of Vysoký Ostrý are similar to those in the Průčelská Canyon, featuring, for example, Bird's-nest Orchid, Wood Sanicle, Melicgrass, etc. The top of Vysoký Ostrý features an observation point. We can turn at the information board in the natural reserve Sluneční Meadow and walk along its ridge. This is a south facing steep rocky slope with well developed flora found on rocks, rock steppes and shrubs. These rare biotopes host protected species, i.e. Feather Grass, St Bernard's Lily, Goldilocks Aster, Hungarian Pink, Earth Iris, etc. Other rare species grow in the oak woods on the foothill, such as Bastard Balm, Ground Virginsbower, White Helleborine, and Red Helleborine. The descent on the terrain from the western part of the meadow is very unpleasant, even dangerous, therefore it is best to return to the nature trail. Across the municipality of Nová Ves featuring the last remains of half-timbered houses, the trail leads us to Castle Střekov, founded as early as in the mid 14th century. The castle stands on a rock, and in April, it is covered with the yellow blossoms of Golden Alyssum, as are most of the other rocks. The inaccessible rock-gardens above the castle display the northernmost location of the Scale Fern.
Route IV: Ústí n.L., bank of the River Labe – Berta´s Valley – Erben´s Lookout Tower on the Dobětice Heights The route starts on the right bank of the River Labe in Ústí n. L. between the railway and the road bridge. At lower water levels, a grit–sand to muddy river bed is exposed. These sediments, unless they are flooded for a longer time, feature overgrowth reminiscent of beds of summer ponds at the end of summer. Of the rarer species we can spot Brown Galingale, Mudwort, Watercress and very rarely Strapwort. Very frequent is also tomato bearing seeds. Impressive Angelica is seen on un-maintained banks (particularly outside the town) of the river. The route continues along the left bank of the river beneath Mariánská Rock. The rock is an important location in terms of geology and mineralogy, as well as botanic. There is a vast below-surface effusion of sodalite-natrolite trachyte, which was divided by erosion activities of the River Labe into the right-bank part (Kamenný Hill in Střekov) and the leftbank part (Mariánská Rock). The cavities of the trachyte frequently display crystals of zeolites and other minerals. The path runs along the nature trail and marked tourist path. In the first bend of the twis-

ting road it diverts to Berta´s Valley. The twisting road was built in the 1960´s and later trees were planted on the slopes. Spruces were planted here, particularly Serbian Spruce; the thermophilic European Cornel also thrives here, the blossoms of which we can enjoy already in March. Berta´s Valley is about a 700 m long forested valley of the Stríbrnický Brook. On the bottom of the valley along the maintained bed of the brook there is a part enclosed by the steep hills overgrown with mighty sycamores, ashes, Pedunculate Oaks, and hazels. The herb undergrowth is poor, however, a walk in this quiet forest valley inside the town is pleasing, and romantic. When leaving the valley it is best to continue along the axis of the valley to Na Louži Street, named after a small water reservoir, abundant with thriving Common Mare’s Tail artificially planted here. The remains of an oak wood are located on the southern hills of Dobětice Heights. The highest peak of the route is the Erbenova Lookout Tower (420 m a.s.l.). The original tower made of timber was opened to the public in 1889, the one made of stone in 1934. The tower offers a wonderful view of the River Labe valley towards Střekov, in the direction to Děčín, the whole city and the nearby Krušné Mountains. We can return from here to the crossroads (near the Lidl supermarket) and continue along the road to Krásné Březno. The road runs near the ZOO, which was established as a successor to the “bird sanctuary“ from the beginning of the 20th century; there are 240 species of animals kept here nowadays. Another possibility is to get to the city bus line to Dobětice or across Kočkov to Severní terasa.
Route V: Zubrnice – Týniště – Buková Mountain – Malé Březno (The route can also be done by car or it is possible to combine a bus with walking.) The municipality of Zubrnice features a famous open-air museum of folk architecture, on the line of the nature trail there is a water mill. The most interesting plants are the oak- hornbeam wood along the Luční Brook, featuring Field Maple, European Hornbeam, Pedunculate Oak and grove species of herbs such as Asarabacca, Sweet Spurge, Spring Vetchling, Addersmeat and Solomon’s Seal. Interesting is also the big population of non-original species of Oxeye Daisy near the railway line below Zubrnice. Off the footpath there is an alluvial plain (on both sides of the road) about 200 m above the village of Klínky. In early spring the herb overgrowth below alder-trees, ashes and chokecherries features thousands of Spring Snowlakes blooming. The Spring Snowflake is quite frequent in the upper parts of small brook valleys on the right bank of the River Labe and in the surroundings of Ústí n. L.. The route to Buková Mountain (quite demanding walking) brings us to a population of Great Horsetail just outside the municipality near the brook; the occurrence of this species indicates water springs in the slopes. Buková Mountain is a large massif situated on the right bank of the River Labe, from which “Stříbrný roh”, an olivine basalt ridge, protrudes. The peak of Buková Mountain (683 m

a.s.l.) features a television transmitter with the Humboldt observation point nearby. The observation point offers a view of the whole valley of Luční Brook and part of the River Labe down to Ústí nad Labem. The slopes are covered with large florid beech woods, some of the best in the Bohemian Uplands. The undergrowth displays species of Coral Root, Drooping Bittercress, Wood Melick, Dwarf Enchanter’s Nightshade, Drooping Sedge, Yellow Archangel, Deadly Nightshade, Perennial Honesty, Black Honeysuckle, etc. Below the peak of Buková Mountain we can find a rifted cave which features a descending profile. In the cave granular snow sometimes remains until the beginning of summer. The most steep, rocky and stony slopes feature debris woods, On the way to Malé Březno mighty limes remind us of the abandoned settlement of Vitín.
Route VI: Telnice – Zadní Telnice – slope „buben“ and training slope – Adolfov – Černá Meadow – Liboňov – Telnice (The start of the route is accessible by car or by bus, medium-demanding route.) The slopes above the marked route from Telnice to Zadní Telnice mostly display beech woods, along the brook wetland species of Melancholy Thistle, Greater Birdsfoot Trefoil, Marsh Violet, and Golden saxifrage. Zadní Telnice is an important winter resort of the Ústí region with several slopes and groomed cross-country ski tracks. An important place is the steep part of the ski slope above the road to Adolfov called „buben“ (“Drum”). On the Kosatec bezlistý (Iris aphylla)

shallow stony earth we will find grass with Nardus atricta with species such as Heath Bedstraw, Catsfoot, Arnica, and also rarely and very scarcely Fragrant Orchid, and Bright Violet. The wet road trenches feature Blue Sow Thistle and Goat’s Beard. The marked route crosses the road and comes to the so-called training slope in Adolfov. Apart from common species the training slope also features Witch's Moneybags, Wood Pink, Earthnut Pea and a relatively abundant population of Fire Lilly as well as abundant aromatic Spignel. The largest forestless area on both sides of the road on the ridge is fallow land which originated from fields abandoned at the beginning of the 1990´s. The Černá Meadow is situated about 1.5 km west – south-west of Adolfov. It features a fancy mosaic of groves, wetlands and peat-bogs in the alluvium of the Černý and Ždířský Brooks. There are Sheathed Cottonsedge, Bogbean, Sundew, Butterwort, Western MarshOrchid, Siberian Iris, Sharp-flowered Rush, Lamb’s Head and Heath Milkwort, and in drier places Wood Pink. The road to Habartice divides it into the northern part, which is larger and richer, however worse, and the smaller southern part. Our road touches the southern part of the meadow and declines mostly through a beech wood to Liboňov. The forest undergrowth is poor, the most striking species is Foxglove. Wetter places below the road in Liboňov are interesting, where Cockoo Pint and other grove species are found.
Other place worth visiting Deblík near Sebuzín: thermophilic oak woods, „rock steppes“, on the side-hill of a sand bar. Nice exothermic lawns are also found on Havraní Rock and Pahorek north-east of Deblík. Rock-gardens near Dolní Zálezly: „rock steppe“ with Spinifex, Earth Iris, Burning Bush, etc.. Observation point. Kozí Hill near Mojžíř: phonolite lacolite, with lime loving flora and with Lovelong Saxifrage, and several species of Phelipanche purpurea here and the nearby Divoká Canyon. Vrabinec near Těchlovice: ruins of a castle on the rock. The flora of the city of Ústí n. L. and its close surroundings is rich, featuring many rare species growing in different places and interesting locations. Hopefully, this short guide will be of help.
