ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
The PhD project had everything you would expect from a good adventure trip. I did not have to travel alone and I want to say Thank You to those who tried to fit me with maps and point out possible routes, those who walked with me when the path got rocky, those who cheered with me in joyful moments, those who challenged me at the right times so I would not fall asleep, and those who told me to take one step at a time. Thank you to my supervisors prof.dr.ir. joost m. festen – for trusting me with this project. For your willingness to share your large knowledge on audiology, signal processing, and acoustics with me. For your sharp eye for mathematics and details of all sorts. It saved me several times from making inattentive mistakes. I often wished for stronger guidance through the PhD jungle from you, but I found your qualities as a supervisor in your focus on exact questions, your friendliness, and your unworried mind. prof.dr. sophia e. kramer – for doing your best to help me navigate through the project in many of its dimensions. For many conversations in critical moments. For encouraging me to apply for a travel grant, which has had far-reaching consequences for me and this project. For stepping over the one conflict we had. For your confidence in my skills as a researcher. For always providing feedback, when I asked you to, and always on time! For being a role model in tireless efforts. dr. s. theo goverts – for making time for conversations, when I needed them, however busy you were. For running me through audiometry training in your clinic. For always keeping the bigger picture of my project in mind. For making me break down my results to kitchen-table messages. For not only giving feedback, but also asking feedback yourself. For showing me your appreciation. Thank you to my other co-authors on the thesis publications prof.dr. m. kathleen pichora-fuller – for inspiration. For making me work hard and for challenging me. For many private audiology lectures. For deliberately taking on a mentoring role that I valued highly. For your solid belief in my qualities as a researcher. For pushing me further. For making research feel like fun.
