About AIFIS The American Institute for Indonesian Studies (AIFIS) is a non-profit (501c3) educational organization incorporated in the United States. It was established with the generous financial support of the U.S. Department of Education, The Henry Luce Foundation, and the Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in the United State, as well as the Putera Sampoerna Foundation in Indonesia. AIFIS is a consortium of American universities and colleges that have expressed a keen interest in furthering the development of Indonesian studies in the United States. Its main goals are to foster scholarly exchange between Indonesian and U.S. scholars, to promote educational and research efforts by U.S. scholars in Indonesia, and to facilitate visits by Indonesian scholars to the United States. AIFIS has opened a research office in Jakarta in the Universitas Siswa Bangsa Internasional Building, Mulia Business Park, 2nd Floor, Building A, Jl. MT. Haryono Kav. 58-60, Jakarta Selatan. We launched our activities there on January 9, 2012.

Mission: • Promote Indonesian Studies broadly construed to include traditional Indonesian Studies disciplines as well as research in other areas dealing with Indonesia e.g. Agroculture, Environmental Sciences, Economics) in the U.S. • Provide access to the results of this research at the level of local communities in Indonesia and the United States of America. Programs: Providing a hub for Americans seeking logistical support and information on research in Indonesia. Supporting research on Indonesia by American and Indonesian scholars. Sharing results of research through lecturers, seminars, and workshops involving universities and NGOs in Indonesia. Developing Memoranda of Understanding with Indonesian universities, NGOs, and research centers to promote common research and teaching goals. Activities in Indonesia: Providing comprehensive on-the-ground logistical support for American scholars conducting research in Indonesia. Planning and hosting seminars, symposia, conferences, and research presentations for visiting U.S. researchers and Indonesian academics alike on Indonesian Studies. AIFIS especially encourages interdisciplinary perspectives that draw on the humanities, social sciences, and the sciences to speak to topics relevant to Indonesia and the United States. Grants and Fellowships AIFIS provides small grants and fellowships to U.S. scholars to fund research in Indonesia. AIFIS provides fellowships to Indonesian scholars to fund travel to the U.S. for collaborative research with a partner at a U.S. institutions of higher education. Page 3 of 14

Research Facilitation
AIFIS staff provides personal assistance with research and residency permits to U.S. researchers visiting Indonesia. AIFIS’s research center also provides networking opportunities for visiting U.S. and Indonesian academics eager to forge international research collaborations.
Language Learning
AIFIS assists visiting U.S. researchers obtain introductory language instruction. Our Jakarta office is coordinates with Indonesian language programs already in operation to help scholars to become proficient enough in Indonesian to work at field research sites or with local collaborators.
