American Language Institute I-20 Application for a U.S. Visa
Admission to most ALI programs is open to all persons 18 years old and over who have completed high school. ELST youth programs accept younger students. The U.S. government requires persons who come to the U.S. for full-time studies (18 hours per week or more) to obtain F-1 student visas. To apply for an F-1 student visa at the U.S. embassy or consulate in the student’s country of origin, an I-20 form will be needed. An I-20 form is a government approved document issued by the ALI. To receive an I-20 form, students must first complete the ALI Application Form and provide a financial statement. Please allow a minimum of one-two (1-2) weeks to process your application.
If the primary purpose for entering the U.S. is study, we recommend an F-1 student visa because: n
an immigration officer may deny entry at the U.S. border to any person who does not have an F-1 student visa if the main reason for coming to the U.S. is to study,
n
persons entering the U.S. on a temporary tourist permit (Visa Waiver) may stay in the U.S. for only 90 days and may not change their status or extend their stay, and
n
it may be difficult to change your status from tourist to student after arriving in the U.S.
