Mexická hudba Zásadním přelomem v politických i kulturních dějinách Střední Ameriky je rok 1521, kdy Hernando Cortéz vyvrátil staré indiánské říše Mayů a Aztéků a položil základy novodobého vývoje regionu. S mexickými tanci to není vůbec jednoduché.
Pánové často tančí s kloboukem, a věřte, není jednoduché mávat takovým velikým a těžkým kloboukem. K tomu všemu ještě připočítáme náklony celého těla a vnímání prostoru kolem sebe. La Bruja – půvabný tanec ze státu Veracruz. Tančí ho pouze dívky a to v krásných bílých šatech. Polka se do Mexika dostala z Čech a my nyní v Čechách tančíme mexickou polku.
Během několika dalších let tuto formu tance přijaly do svého repertoáru i ostatní taneční skupiny podobného zaměření. Vystoupení Staré almary doplňuje Martin Žák poutavým vyprávěním o dávno zapomenutých hudebních nástrojích a příbězích. My s Dvoranou se pak staráme o doplnění pořadu vhodnými tanečními ukázkami a výukou country tanců. Společně prezentujeme hudbu a tance 19. století. Představení jsou připravována tzv. „na klíč“ pro diváky ve Francii.

history of Central America as this was the year that Hernando Cortéz wiped out the old American Indian Mayan and Aztec empires and laid the foundations of the new development of the region. The Spanish conquerors were soon followed by missionaries and new inhabitants, and together with them a new culture, including music. The confrontation of two such diverse civilisations was not always straightforward, but in music these different worlds merged relatively smoothly and the imported musical style even assimilated many features of the native Indian music. In Mexico two main branches of music gradually developed – one which followed on from pre-Columbian music and the other with its roots in European musical thought. Both musical layers co-existed, mutually influencing one another and interweaving. On the surface, new Mexican music differs from its older ancestor primarily in its instrumentation. The original music of the Aztecs, Mayans and other Indian tribes was based on a richly structured group of numerous percussion instruments, which were at most accompanied by primitive forms of pipes and ocarinas, whereas in later Mexican folk music, as presented by today’s guests, the sound of the violin, guitar, mandolin and also harp, whose soundboard gives out a characteristic sound when hit by the palm of the hand, is complemented by a wide range of percussion instruments. Even though one of the sources of this music is the unmistakeable musical expression of the ancient pre-Columbian Indian tribes, it is clear that its main source is Spanish music, which was brought over by the conquerors and Jesuit missionaries. This is evident primarily in the melodic models derived from Iberian lyricism, in their simple harmony (with their predominant major and minor keys, which have almost entirely replaced the original richer tonal range) and also in the close connection with dance. Movement is an inherent part of this music which pulses with its characteristic rhythm, in which 6/8 and 3/4 time alternate, sometimes even occurring concurrently. The basic form of vocal and instrumental music is the song (son) which includes typical Iberian forms of folk music such as the copla (a stanza comprising four eight-syllable rhyming verse) and the décima (decastich). The combination of these simple formal formations leads to the creation of more complex pieces, of which the oldest and most popular is the so-called jarabe dance. An inseparable part of this musical culture is folk verse – poetic texts with a variety of themes – romantic, lyrical, or even ironic and picaresque, sometimes containing regional tales and legends, as well as political and religious motifs. Certain themes are always associated with a particular melody (for example, the malaguena), by which they are identified. However, what makes this music so captivating is its temperament, enhanced by the musicians’ lively performance, which creates an atmosphere of vitality, bathed in southern sunlight and accompanied by the murmuring of the sea. Mexican dances in the Czech Republic Mexico – a huge country in the south-east of North America. A country rich in natural beauties, history, and people with unique culture. It is not simple to speak about Mexican dances. Like the Czech Republic, Mexico has a high number of regions that differ in music, dancing, and clothing. Some regions are known even by laics, some only by experts. Mexican dances are not only about large sombreros and wide skirts. In many areas, dancers wear very simple clothing from white cloth and sandals. At other places, they use colors so much that the costume seems to us to be over the top of taste. We must not forget that Mexi-
can culture includes also periods before the arrival of Spaniards. There are old Indian dances full of mysticism and old religions. Music is just like costumes. In each region, we can find different music. We can all probably imagine Mexicans playing a trumpet, violin, or bass guitar (wooden and hollow). But not everyone can pick a xylophone or a harp as a traditional instrument. In Mexican Music, there is often very complicated rhythm. This is not a problem of polkas but in case of so-called Jarabe, the rhythm can be a real problem for us, Central Europeans. A big part of Mexican music is based on a triplet rhythm. That means that you dance a step that can be counted to three in one interval. I have already heard Mexican music with regular bars and all of a sudden, one interval was missing. It was simply not there and everyone “pretends” it is all right. Perhaps a variation of Czech Matenik? Perhaps the most important part of Mexican dances is contact of the dancers. Mexicans, whatever they are dancing, always smile at the partner and they express their appreciation and admiration. It is possible to say that they flirt with each other. Of course, everything is within certain limits. But this coquetting combined with joy of motion will transfer some tension to you which contrasts with the jollity of the dancing couples. It is possible to dance in all different formations. In large circles, quadrilles, rows, but mainly in couples. Most dances that we can see even in our country are dance choreographies which is a little misleading. Mexican dances are simple as well as complicated. In case of some you can just shuffle your feet and that is it, in case of others you have to be able to think of many things at one moment. Work of feet is characteristic for Mexican dances. Both gentlemen and ladies dance precisely defined steps. They step by certain parts of the foot to the floor. And in addition, ladies drag their skirts, which usually surround them twice (it is a huge amount of cloth and it weighs something), in exactly defined curves. Gentlemen often dance with their hats and believe that it is not easy to swing around with such a big and heavy hat. And we have to add also tilting of the entire body and perception of the space around. La Bruja – a charming dance from the state of Veracruz. It is danced only by the girls dressed in wonderful white dresses. But what is more, each dancer has a glass of water with a lighted candle floating in it on her head. El Huateque – a choreography for 2 to 8 dance couples, again from the state of Veracruz. All dancers are dressed in traditional costumes. In the music the audience can hear a very typical musical instrument for the Veracruz region – harp. Nayarit Jarabe – a dance from the state of Nayarit which perfectly pictures the local culture. The entire region is much poorer than Veracruz or Jalisco. The dancers wear simpler costumes. Men have a machete in each hand which symbolizes the tradition of sugarcane farming. The dance with machetes is very attractive for the audience. La Grula – a dance from the north of Mexico. It is a real Mexican polka. It is a matter of fact that by this act the circle closes. Polka came to Mexico from Bohemia and now we in Bohemia dance Mexican polka. The choreography is designed for 4 to 6 dance couples and the lively melody invites to dance. There are marks of American western culture, not only in dance figures, but also in costumes.
Jarabe Tapatio – a dance from the Mexican state of Jalisco. It is one of the most popular Mexican tunes, the melody of which is known even by those who have never seen Mexican dances. The dance is designed for 1 to 3 dance couples. It is ranked among difficult dance acts, especially due to the difficult dance steps with which the dancers stamp out changing rhythmic patterns. Las Alazanas – another dance from the Mexican state of Jalisco, this time designed for 4 to 8 dancers. Since it is danced by men only, the choreography highlights their elegant black costumes with silver decorations. Of course also in this dance, the gentlemen stamp out individual dance steps with their feet. La Negra – a festive dance from the Mexican state of Jalisco which apart from beautiful music shows also splendid colourful costumes. Each girl dances with a coloured skirt making beautiful waves with it. Together with their partners they stamp out rhythmical steps with their feet. The program has been prepared with texts by Jaroslav Holecek and Jan Pumpr. Mariachi Azteca de Praga The group Mariachi Azteca de Praga was established in December 2005 in Prague by Alejandro Tamez Quintanilla who comes from Monterrey, Neovo Leon, Mexico and thus the first Maricahi group in Prague came to existence. In 2006 the group performed for the first time at an International Cultural Festival representing Mexico in Old Town Square, Prague, and in the Vinohrady Theater. Then it traveled around the entire Czech Republic with its performances. In 2007, the group started to perform with new image in original costumes of authentic “charro Mexicano”. In 2007 the group signed a contract with Si Senor and performed at large events including Cemex, Brown and Forman, and at Latin American Le Fiesta, for the Mexican embassy, and Slovak Folklore Association Limbora. In 2007 Mariachi Azteca de Praga returned to the International Cultural Festival in Prague and carried out a tour called Paloma Tequila El Jimador for Brown and Forman. The group also presented itself during celebration of the Independence Day on September 16 and its concert “Under sombreros” started cooperation with the dance group Dvorana. In 2007, Mariachi Azteca de Praga released their first album. Dvorana Dvorana Dancers originated under the leadership of Jasan Bonuš in 1978 as one of the first dance companies pioneering American dancing in the Czech Republic. Since its inception, the company performed on a significant number of balls and culture events in various places in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. They were also often invited to festivals in Germany and Denmark. They cooperated on a regular basis with Petr Novotný and the band of Fešáci, the bands of Nota bene, Texmeni, Noví Zelenáči and many others. In December
2000, the company succeeded in the national dance competition called “Stodola 2000” (Barn 2000) which they won, and in autumn 2003, they went on tour in the USA. The company perform their choreographies using recorded music or to the accompaniment of the Nota Bene bluegrass band. Apart from “classical” country dances, Dvorana Dancers were the first to present the Czech audience with clogging. The former company head Jitka Bonušová gave the first performance of this kind in the Czech Republic. In a short time another, this time collective, performance followed. Thus clogging took a definitive hold within the country-western entertainment in the Czech Republic. Today, the company has six clogging performances. Within a couple of years this dance form had been adopted by other dance ensembles of a similar focus as part of their repertory. Therefore, it was time to come with something brand new again. This time Dvorana Dancers introduced dances from Scotland and Mexico. In 1993, the first performance in a genuine Mexican style came into the world. In 1995 the leading of the company was taken over by Jan Pumpr – Dvorana’s dancer until then. Together with Ludmila Chroustová they managed to broaden the repertory adding other dance numbers. Presently, the company offers the total of 24 dance acts. Less topical choreographies are gradually replaced by new ones. The company is able to make up a programme of the total length of 45–60 minutes. Such programme can also include teaching simple dances to the audience apart from dance demonstrations. Thanks to this, the programme can be extended and modified as requested. In 1998, Dvorana Dancers started to cooperate with a private elementary art school of Music Art. Together they set the scene for a regular training of clogging and country dances at elementary art schools. They succeeded to prepare curriculum which was approved by the Ministry of Education. You can get further details at the website of Music Art. Since 2002 Dvorana Dancers have been deepening the friendship and cooperation with Martin Žák and his band of Stará almara who are the most credible performers playing Old Time American music. Their presentation of American folk music carries the audience and listeners to the era of American settlement. Stará almara’s performance is accompanied by a very gripping narration about long forgotten musical instruments and stories. Dvorana Dancers take care of accompanying the programme with suitable dance demonstrations and country dance lectures. In autumn 2007, Dvorana Dancers have established cooperation with the symphony orchestra lead by Mr. Boris Jedlička. Together they present 19th century music and dances. The performance is a turn-key programme prepared for the audience in France.
