A Composite material is a material system composed of two or more macro constituents that differ in shape and chemical composition and which are insoluble in each other. The history of composite materials dates back to early 20th century. In 1940, fiber glass was first used to reinforce epoxy.

Pengertian Komposit Komposit merupakan kombinasi dari dua material atau lebih yang memiliki fasa yang berbeda menjadi suatu material baru yang memiliki properti lebih baik dari keduanya. Jika kombinasi ini terjadi dalam skala makroskopis maka disebut sebagai komposit. Jika kombinasi ini terjadi secara mikoroskopis (molekular level) maka disebut sebagai alloy atau paduan.

Matriks adalah fasa dalam komposit yang mempunyai bagian atau fraksi volume terbesar (dominan). Matriks mempunyai fungsi sebagai berikut : a) Mentransfer tegangan ke fasa yang lain (serat). b) Membentuk ikatan koheren, permukaan matrik/serat. c) Melindungi fasa serat dari lingkungan. d) Memisahkan serat. e) Melepas ikatan. f) Tetap stabil setelah proses manufaktur. 2. Reinforcement atau Filler atau Fiber • Salah satu bagian utama dari komposit adalah reinforcement (penguat) yang berfungsi sebagai penanggung beban utama pada komposit. • Merupakan fasa terdispersi yang tujuannya untuk mempertinggi sifat fasa matriks.

Composite Structural Organization: the design variations
• Adanya dua penyusun komposit atau lebih menimbulkan beberapa daerah dan istilah penyebutannya; – – – –

Secara strukturmikro material komposit tidak merubah material pembentuknya (dalam orde kristalin) tetapi secara keseluruhan material komposit berbeda dengan material pembentuknya karena terjadi ikatan antar permukaan antara matriks dan filler. Syarat terbentuknya komposit: adanya ikatan permukaan antara matriks dan filler. Ikatan antar permukaan ini terjadi karena adanya gaya adhesi dan kohesi. Dalam material komposit gaya adhesi-kohesi terjadi melalui 3 cara utama: – Interlocking antar permukaan → ikatan yang terjadi karena kekasaran bentuk permukaan partikel. – Gaya elektrostatis → ikatan yang terjadi karena adanya gaya tarik-menarik antara atom yang bermuatan (ion). – Gaya vanderwalls → ikatan yang terjadi karena adanya pengutupan antar partikel.
Matrik (penyusun dengan fraksi volume terbesar), Fiber (Penahan beban utama), Interphase (pelekat antar dua penyusun), interface (permukaan phase yang berbatasan dengan phase lain).
• Kualitas ikatan antara matriks dan filler dipengaruhi oleh beberapa variabel antara lain: o Ukuran partikel o Rapat jenis bahan yang digunakan o Fraksi volume material o Komposisi material o Bentuk partikel o Kecepatan dan waktu pencampuran o Penekanan (kompaksi) o Pemanasan (sintering)

Properties Komposit Sifat maupun Karakteristik dari komposit ditentukan oleh: • Material yang menjadi penyusun komposit. Karakteristik komposit ditentukan berdasarkan karakteristik material penyusun menurut rule of mixture sehingga akan berbanding secara proporsional. • Bentuk dan penyusunan struktural dari penyusun. Bentuk dan cara penyusunan komposit akan mempengaruhi karakteristik komposit. • Interaksi antar penyusun Bila terjadi interaksi antar penyusun akan meningkatkan sifat dari komposit.

Particulate composites Keuntungan dari komposit yang disusun oleh reinforcement berbentuk partikel: a) Kekuatan lebih seragam pada berbagai arah b) Dapat digunakan untuk meningkatkan kekuatan dan meningkatkan kekerasan material c) Cara penguatan dan pengerasan oleh partikulat adalah dengan menghalangi pergerakan dislokasi. Proses produksi pada komposit yang disusun oleh reinforcement berbentuk partikel: a) Metalurgi Serbuk b) Stir Casting Ukuran partikel dibedakan menjadi dua, yaitu c) Infiltration Process 1)Large particle d) Spray Deposition 2)Dispersion strengthened particle a) Fraksi partikulat sangat kecil, jarang lebih dari 3%. e) In-Situ Process
Perbedaan Komposit dan Alloy Perbedaan antara komposit dan alloy adalah dalam hal sistem proses pemaduannya: o Komposit bila ditinjau secara mikroskopi masih menampakkan adanya komponen matrik dan komponen filler, sedangkan alloy telah terjadi perpaduan yang homogen antara matrik dan filler o Pada material komposit, dapat leluasa merencanakan kekuatan material yang diinginkan dengan mengatur komposisi dari matrik dan filler, sifat material yang menyatu dapat dievaluasi dan diuji secara terpisah.

Dispersion Strengthened Composites • Metals and metal alloys – hardened by uniform dispersion of fine particles of a very hard material (usually ceramic)
• Strengthening occurs through the interactions of dislocations and the particulates • Examples • Thoria in Ni • Al/Al2O3 sintered aluminum powder SAP • GP zones in Al
• CERMET (ceramic-metal composite) – cemented carbide (WC, TiC embedded in Cu or Ni) – cutting tools (ceramic hard particles to cut, but a ductile metal matrix to withstand stresses) – large volume fractions are used (up to 90%!)
2. Fiber composites Fungsi utama dari serat adalah sebagai penopang kekuatan dari komposit, sehingga tinggi rendahnya kekuatan komposit sangat tergantung dari serat yang digunakan, karena tegangan yang dikenakan pada komposit mulanya diterima oleh matrik akan diteruskan kepada serat, sehingga serat akan menahan beban sampai beban maksimum.

Matriks yang dipadukan dengan fiber berfungsi sebagai : Penjepit fiber Melindungi fiber dari kerusakan permukaan Pemisah antara fiber dan juga mencegah timbulnya perambatan crack dari suatu fiber ke fiber lain Berfungsi sebagai medium dimana eksternal stress yang diaplikasikan ke komposit, ditransmisikan dan didistribusikan ke fiber.

Aligned Fibers • When fibers are aligned – properties of material are highly anisotropic – modulus in direction of alignment is a function of the volume fraction of the E of the fiber and matrix – modulus perpendicular to direction of alignment is considerably less (the fibers do not contribute)

Fiber Alignment
Berdasarkan penempatannya terdapat beberapa tipe serat pada komposit, yaitu:

a) Continuous Fiber Composite Continuous atau uni-directional, mempunyai susunan serat panjang dan lurus, membentuk lamina diantara matriksnya. Jenis komposit ini paling banyak digunakan. Kekurangan tipe ini adalah lemahnya kekuatan antar antar lapisan. Hal ini dikarenakan kekuatan antar lapisan dipengaruhi oleh matriksnya. b) Woven Fiber Composite (bi-dirtectional)
c) Discontinuous Fiber Composite (chopped fiber composite) Komposit dengan tipe serat pendek masih dibedakan lagi menjadi : 1) Aligned discontinuous fiber 2) Off-axis aligned discontinuous fiber 3) Randomly oriented discontinuous fiber Randomly oriented discontinuous fiber merupakan komposit dengan serat pendek yang tersebar secara acak diantara matriksnya. Tipe acak sering digunakan pada produksi dengan volume besar karena faktor biaya manufakturnya yang lebih murah. Kekurangan dari jenis serat acak adalah sifat mekanik yang masih dibawah dari penguatan dengan serat lurus pada jenis serat yang sama.
Komposit ini tidak mudah terpengaruh pemisahan antar lapisan karena susunan seratnya juga mengikat antar lapisan. Akan tetapi susunan serat memanjangnya yang tidak begitu lurus mengakibatkan kekuatan dan kekakuan tidak sebaik tipe continuous fiber.

d) Hybrid fiber composite Hybrid fiber composite merupakan komposit gabungan antara tipe serat lurus dengan serat acak. Pertimbangannya supaya dapat mengeliminir kekurangan sifat dari kedua tipe dan dapat menggabungkan kelebihannya.
Sifat-Sifatnya • Densitynya cukup rendah ( sekitar 2.55 g/cc) • Tensile strengthnya cukup tinggi (sekitar 1.8 GPa) • Biasanya stiffnessnya rendah (70GPa) • Stabilitas dimensinya baik • Resisten terhadap panas • Resisten terhadap dingin • Tahan korosi
Fiber yang biasa digunakan antara lain : Fibers – Glass – Sangat umun digunakan, fiber yang murah adalah glass fiber yang sering digunakan untuk reinforcement dalam matrik polimer – Komposisi umum adalah 50 – 60 % SiO2 dan paduan lain yaitu Al, Ca, Mg, Na, dll. – Moisture dapat mengurangi kekuatan dari glass fiber – Glass fiber sangat rentan mengalami static fatik – Biasanya digunakan untuk: piping, tanks, boats, alat-alat olah raga
Keuntungan : • Biaya murah • Tahan korosi • Biayanya relative lebih rendah dari komposit lainnya
Kerugian • Kekuatannya relative rendah • Elongasi tinggi • Keuatan dan beratnya sedang (moderate)

Fiberglass Reinforced Composites Glass is a common reinforcement • it is easily drawn into fibers • it is cheap and readily available • it is easy to process into composites • it can produce very strong, very light composites (high specific strength) • it is usually chemically inert (does not degrade in harsh environments)
Nylon Fibers - Aramid (kevlar, Twaron) Biasanya digunakan untuk : Armor, protective clothing, industrial, sporting goods Keuntungan :kekutannya cukup tinggi, dan lebih ductile dari carbon
Carbon Fibers • Densitaskarbon cukup ringan yaitu sekitar 2.3 g/cc • Struktur grafit yang digunakan untuk membuat fiber berbentuk seperti kristal intan. • Karakteristik komposit dengan serat karbon : – ringan; – kekuatan yang sangat tinggi; – kekakuan (modulus elastisitas) tinggi.
• Diproduksi dari poliakrilonitril (PAN), melalui tiga tahap proses : • Stabilisasi = peregangan dan oksidasi; • Karbonisasi= pemanasan untuk mengurangi O, H, N; • Grafitisasi = meningkatkan modulus elastisitas.
