Prof. Dr. Hub (H.A.E.) Zwart – Curriculum Vitae Current positions: Full Professor of Philosophy - Faculty of Science - Radboud University Nijmegen (2000-)
Department of Philosophy & Science Studies (Chair) (2000-) Centre for Society and the Life Sciences (CSG, Scientific Director) (2003-) Institute for Science, Innovation & Society (Director of Education) (2012-) Hub Zwart (1960) studied Philosophy (cum laude) and Psychology (cum laude) at RU Nijmegen (NL), worked as research associate at the Centre for Bioethics (Maastricht, 19881992), defended his thesis in 1993 (cum laude) and was subsequently appointed as research director / senior researcher of the Centre for Ethics (RU Nijmegen, 1992-2000). He also was editor-in-chief of TGE - a Dutch journal for philosophy and medicine (1993-2000). In 2000 he became full Professor of Philosophy at the Faculty of Science (RU Nijmegen). In 2004 he established the Centre for Society & Genomics (CSG) at his Department and became Scientific Director of this national centre for research and societal interaction, one of the Centres of Excellence funded by NGI. In 2005 he established the
Institute for Science, Innovation and Society (ISIS), one of six research Institutes of the Faculty of Science (2005-2008; 2009-2012) and acted as ISIS director for the first two terms (until 2012). Since 2012, he is ISIS Director of Education. He was European lead of the EU Canada exchange program Coastal Values (1999-2003) and is currently involved in a number of EU projects such as NERRI (Responsible Research and Innovation in Neuro-Science). The focus of his research is on the philosophical dimensions of the life sciences: biomedicine (1988-1996), animal research (1996-2003), environmental research (1998-2003), genomics (notably human and environmental genomics, 2003-present) and post-genomics NBIC fields (notably synthetic biology and neuroscience). His basic research question is how the life sciences (more broadly: NBIC fields) challenge and affect our understanding of life and nature as well as of ourselves as human beings. These issues are addressed from a ‘continental’ philosophical perspective, building on research traditions such as dialectics (Hegel), phenomenology (Heidegger) and psychoanalysis (Lacan). Related research themes include scientific authorship (the topic of his inaugural lecture) and comparative epistemology (science, literature, music, art and other genres of the imagination as sources of knowledge concerning nature, human existence and our will to know). He published 14 books (2 in English), > 60 single or first author peer-reviewed research papers in English and > 100 papers in Dutch. He presented > 120 invited international lectures. 1

Acquisition / Funding ID In the 1990s, my acquisition activities focussed on NWO programmes (such as Ethics & Policy) and on the Science & Society program (RU Nijmegen). Thus, I acquired funding for the first theses I supervised. On the international level, I was European lead of the EU Canada master student exchange programme Coastal Values (involving 3 European and 3 Canadian partner universities) and I was partner in the FP6 Science & Society INES project (lead by Lancaster/Cardiff, UK). Subsequently, notably from 2000 onwards, my focus shifted to basic issues in emerging life sciences. In 2002, I responded to a Call for setting up a national Centre for Society and Genomics (CSG). On the basis of an assessment by an international jury of prominent experts, I acquired a grant of 5.000.000,- € for setting up CSG I (2004-2008) at my Department, one of five Centres of Excellence of the Netherlands Genomics Network, funded by NGI (Netherlands Genomics Initiative). The mission of CSG was to anticipate and address philosophical and societal issues in genomics as an emerging life sciences research field. I established (and became director of) CSG in 2004, in collaboration with expert groups based at six other Dutch Universities. In 2007, on the basis of an extensive peer review by two international expert committees, both of our performance and of an elaborate proposal for the second phase (CSG NEXT), I acquired significant additional funding (25.000.000,- €) for a comprehensive programme for research and societal interaction concerning genomics (CSG Next 2008-2013), in close collaboration with 9 Dutch universities and 15 genomics research centres, as well as a number of prominent international partners and industry. I became Scientific Director of this programme (which successfully developed and conducted > 60 research projects). In 2006, I also became director of ISIS, one of six Research Institutes of the Faculty of Science and one of 21 Research Institutes of RU Nijmegen. An important target was developing and supervising Ph.D. projects in collaboration with other Institutes of the Faculty of Science, such as: Biomaterials: an ontological assessment (in collaboration with IMM) and Visions of nature and exotic species (in collaboration with IWWR). In 2011, I acquired funding for (a) an ESF conference series on Sustainable BioInnovation (2012-2014, which I coordinated). In 2012 I became Work-Package leader of a EU FP7 project on philosophical and societal aspects of Neuroscience. I also developed an acquired funding for a research program involving 2 post-doc projects funded by NWO (Programme: MVI - Maatschappelijk Verantwoord Innoveren) entitled: Towards a Bio-based future – a project which aims to analyse and assess fundamental concepts at stake in the biobased transition. In 2014, I developed a Ph.D. project on philosophical and ethical aspects of Nanomedicine.
