9.9. 2017 9:00 – Gathering in front of the hotels, then travel to the first stop by bus 1. Salt affected soils: Solonchaks The Fertő / Neusiedlersee Cultural Landscape is on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites. Lake Fertő is a shallow, salt lake. The large grasslands and colourful meadows around the lake provides home for many species of birds. The characteristic soil types are solonchak and solonchak-solonetz soils.
2. Water affected soils: Histosols Another hot spot is the swamp forests of FHNP. In the '60-s forestation rate was low, but there were on several places Alder- and Willow swamps or Oaks as well. After the drainage, there was a significant rearrangement of the wooded areas. The original woods that remained (Alnus sp.) represent the natural heritage. Lunch at Kantár Csárda (Vitnyéd)

3. Lithomorphic soils: Leptosols A Hungarian speciality: Gritty clayey leptosol formed on alluvial deposit. In the deep, there is a thin-skinned and acidic tilth layer. Hard-faced gravel layer with iron compounds were form by rivers. This layer hinders the thickening of the tilth and impairs the water management and the air circulation of soil as well.
4. Effect of grazing: Cambisols To introduce the diversity of Sopron, we will visit a Hornbeam and Sessile Oak forest on the eastern border of the city. The forest soils of this area formed on Miocene limestone, which affected by climatic and anthropogenic interventions.

10.9. 9:00 – Check out, gathering in front of the hotels, travel into Sopron Mountains by bus Visit into Sopron Mountains - Introduction of water investigations in Hidegvízvalley (with Prof. Dr. Zoltán Gribovszki and team) The bedrock of Sopron Mountains is crystalline settled tertiary (Miocene) fluvial sediment and on the hilltop and hill slope is a 10 m thick layer, which contains coarser gravels and finest loam. More information: https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B05S9zMvuxyCbk9JdjBFZTJFTk0 5. Soils of forests The highest point of Sopron Mountains is Magasbérc (555.8 m above Balti see level). The compositions of the Mountains are polymetamorphic gneiss and mica. Under the forest cover, forest soils (podzolic slightly acidic and podzolic brown forest soils) formed. In 1995, forest climate measurements started in a middleaged beech stand. Lunch (and travel to Bratislava by bus) Contacts: Prof. Dr. András Bidló (
