Kangaroo The kangaroo is the largest marsupial in the world. An animal carries babies in the pouch for 8 months. It can weigh 85 kilograms. Why a “kangaroo”? When European explorers first saw these strange animals they asked a native Australian Aborigine about their name. He answered “kangaroo” to say “I don‛t understand your question”. The explorers thought this was the animal‛s name. That is how the kangaroo got its name.

Koala The koala is a small bear-like animal which lives in the eucalyptus trees. Most of its time the koala spends in these trees sleeping. They eat only some kinds of eucalyptus trees that grow in Australia. The name “koala” is the Aboriginal name for “no water”. Koala has a black nose and thick furry coat. It can weigh 10 kilograms. Though it looks very funny it has very sharp teeth and very sharp claws. The koala‛s nickname is a “native bear”. Many people think that koala is a bear but it is related to the kangaroo and the wombat.

Hi! I‛m Kenny, the Koala from Australia. Remember, I am not a bear. I haven‛t got a big body. I‛m soft and grey but my belly is white. I have got big fluffy ears and a large nose. It helps me sniff out my favourite food. My tail is very small. My hands have got two thumbs, three fingers and sharp claws. They help me climb trees. I eat eucalyptus leaves. They are very juicy and tasty. I‛m lazy. I sleep 20 hours a day. Baby koalas live in a pouch and drink milk.
