Keywords : Personality, Psychosocial, Epigenetic Principle, Interpersonal Relationship Individual personality reflects attitudes, behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Every person personality is special since it is different from others. Personality diversity is influenced by some factors such as society, heredity, and dynamic inner forces. Society can be categorized as a significant factor. It influences personality development of an individual since individual lives in society. Personality development which is influenced by the society is reflected in Novalee, the main character of Where the Heart Is novel, written by Billie Letts. The process of Novalee’s personality development becomes this study’s main concern. This study aims to reveal the process of Novalee’s personality changing since she have been living with her new family and friends in a new place. This study uses psychosocial approach to discover the process of Novalee’s personality development which is influenced by the society. The Epigenetic Principle from Erik Erikson is used as the main theory. Stages from Epigenetic Principle explain the process of personality changing from infancy period until elderhood period. But, since this study concerns more on society’s influences, the stages that will be used only stages which get much influence from society like stage five until stage seven. This study reveals that Novalee’s personality is changed significantly due to her new society’s influences. She successfully encounters the crisis in stage five, six, and seven. She gets the virtues of three stages that she passes. The role of people like Sister Husband and Forney Hull is significant in the process of personality development. Novalee’s personality development proves that society holds important role in changing someone’s personality.

Kata Kunci : Kepribadian, Psikososial, Epigenetic Principle, Interpersonal Relationship Kepribadian individu mencerminkan sikap, tindakan, pemikiran, dan perasaan. Kepribadian setiap individu adalah sesuatu yang spesial karena setiap individu memiliki kepribadian yang berbeda. Perbedaan kepribadian tersebut dipengaruhi oleh beberapa faktor seperti masyarakat, keturunan, and alam bawah sadar manusia. Masyarakat dapat dikategorikan sebagai faktor yang signifikan. Masyarakat dapat mempengaruhi perkembangan kepribadian karena setiap individu hidup bersama-sama dengan masyarakat. Perkembangan kepribadian yang dipengaruhi oleh masyarakat tercermin pada Novalee, karakter utama dalam novel Where the Heart Is karya Billie Letts. Proses perkembangan karakter Novalee menjadi fokus utama dalam studi ini. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap proses perkembangan karakter Novalee sejak ia mulai tinggal bersama dengan keluarga dan teman baru di lingkungan baru. Studi ini menggunakan pendekatan psikososial untuk mengetahui proses perkembangan kepribadian Novalee yang dipengaruhi oleh masyarakat. Teori Epigenetic Principle dari Erik Erikson menjadi teori utama studi ini. Tingkatantingkatan dalam teori tersebut menjelaskan proses perkembangan kepribadian seseorang sejak masih bayi hingga lanjut usia. Namun, karena studi ini lebih fokus pada pengaruh masyarakat, tingkatan-tingkatan yang digunakan hanya tingkatan yang mendapat pengaruh signifikan dari masyarakat seperti tingkat kelima hingga tingkat ketujuh. Studi ini mengungkap bahwa kepribadian Novalee berubah secara signifikan akibat dari pengaruh masyarakat di lingkungannya. Novalee sukses mengatasi permasalahan yang muncul di tingkatan kelima, keenam, dan ketujuh. Ia juga mendapatakan nilai-nilai tingkatan yang telah ia lewati. Peran dari orangorang terdekat Novalee seperti Sister Husband dan Forney Hull sangat penting dalam proses perkembangan karakter. Perkembangan karakter Novalee membuktikan bahwa masyarakat memegang peranan penting dalam mengubah kepribadian seseorang.
