Insightful reviews Jacquelyn: This is the first time I've read anything by Osamu Dazai. Apparently, Dazai was a tragic figure - he became addicted to morphine and made several suicide attempts before he succeeded in 1948. The translator's notes say that he was considered one of the great chroniclers of contempory Japanese life. The story is about the decline of the aristocracy after the war. The images that Dazai brings to the reader are startling in their hue and weight - the mother who sips her soup from the end of the spoon, fluttering it as she does so, like a sparrow. We encounter the family's reduction in means, and their attempts to fit into a rural village, where they moved after they lost the mansion. The daughter, Kazuko, engages in farm labour which 'coarsens' her. The son, Naoji, is a violent young man who spends the remaining family wealth on drugs and drinking in Tokyo. The defeat of Japan is never explicitly explored, only the effects on the people. The reader - or at least THIS reader - will see some of the trials and humiliations of this family as simply annoying. After all, as they are being lowered to the working class, there are many already there who would yearn to be in this family's shoes. But the details of the people and their lives are compelling. I will try to find more of Dazai! Tara: This was different from any of the other Japanese literature I've read (not that I have so much experience but...) The structure was a bit different in that it is made up of diary entries and letters within a diary itself and the time skips around a bit. It was, at times, difficult to follow, but not overly so. I expected the book to be a bleaker read than it turned out to be. I feel like Dazai managed to capture an intricate set of emotions -- love, despair, addiction, loss, belonging, the list goes on -- while still keeping the feeling quite light while still maintaining seriousness. It's hard to describe. But a very interesting book and contrast to Soseki's Sanshiro which ultimately has a similar subject matter. Christopher Lawrence: Osamu Dazai is still considered one of the great Japanese authors of the first half of the 20th century. His life was short and tragic: he committed suicide at age 39. (It seems to have been common for prominent 20th century Japanese authors to kill themselves.) The Setting Sun is an amazing novel, and one of those books I just couldn't put down. Also of note: the translation is masterfully written by Donald Keene, one of the foremost Western experts on Japan. The novel was written in 1947, a year before Dazai's suicide. The story revolves around the narrator Kazuko, and her struggles and turmoil. She is divorced and supports her ailing mother. Her brother vanished during the Pacific War, addicted to opium, yet reappears very early in the novel, causing even more strife. Kazuko turns down an eligible suitor (the artist), only to fall in love with a fairly repulsive author, who may or may not be partially based on Dazai himself (he was quite prone to self loathing of course). The real magic of this novel cannot be described in one or two ways. It is a sum of all parts. We
have beautiful symbolism (or horrifyingly beautiful in the case of the burning of the serpent's eggs). We also have interesting, though not always lovable characters. We have wonderful language and exquisite prose. Dazai transports the reader into the world these characters are experiencing, and though we may not believe or understand their actions, we are witness to these actions and their results. The entire cast of characters is set to self destruct. It is not surprising, and in fact, it is the obviousness of this path that makes the novel so amazing. The reader can tell very soon that things are not likely to end well for these folks. There is one little bit of redemption, in a way, but looking at that in 21st century eyes doesn't really give the reader the right effect. The so called 'redemption' is something that was considered taboo in 1940s Japan and would be completely self destructive for both involved (I'm trying to be vague and not give anything away, but the Amazon description gives it away already!). If you are a fan of Kawabata, Akutagawa, Mishima, and other brilliant, existential, and often depressing Japanese authors, then treat yourself to Dazai. His writing is amazing and beautiful. I completed this rather short (170 page) novel in about four hours, reading at a casual pace; so it's not too time consuming. The novel didn't have me jumping for joy or shouting 'yay!', but it gave me much food for thought. I will be chewing this one over for awhile. It is just one of those novels which I know I will remember for the rest of my life. Highly recommended. Kelly: moment time via this ideal book, the 1st being a dozen years ago. The Keene advent does an outstanding activity of highlighting a number of the issues I take pleasure in so much approximately jap writing and characterization:"At an identical time, she continues to be unmistakably jap in her family members with the folk round her and in her fast emotional responses to the moments of depth in her life. simply because relations confidences are nearly very unlikely (except at the infrequent events whilst the repressions of eastern existence are conquer through the strength of insupportable emotions), Kazuko, her mother, and her brother dwell virtually with out overt conversation with one another. And even though he (Dazai) succeeds in lending impressive vividness to his characters, there's a lot inevitably left unsaid during this jap world. THE surroundings solar owes a lot to ecu culture, however it is as jap a unique as may be written today, during this interval while the skin and internal manifestation of jap lifestyles are being Westernized at very varied speeds and while (to a Western reader) the japanese literature which displays those alterations is surprising, alternately, for its closeness and remoteness to our personal lives." Biondy: Judul: The surroundings sunlight (??--Shay?)Penulis: Osamu DazaiPenerjemah: Donald KeenePenerbit: Tuttle Publishing, Berkeley BooksTebal: a hundred seventy five halamanTerbit: 1981 Berlatarkan Jepang setelah Perang Dunia II, "The surroundings Sun" bercerita tentang Kazuko, anak perempuan tertua dari sebuah keluarga aristokrat yang kehilangan hartanya akibat perang.
Seperti yang dia pikirkan pada halaman 114,Revolution and love are actually the best, most enjoyable issues within the world, and we are aware of it is strictly simply because they're so reliable that the older and wiser heads have spitefully fobbed off on us their bitter grapes of a lie. This i need to think implicitly: guy was once born for romance and revolution. Secara gamblang Kazuko bahkan menyebut, "In the current world, the main appealing factor is a victim" (hal. 174). Setengah bintang lagi saya berikan pada satu baris terakhir di novel ini, baris penutup surat Kazuko pada Mr. Uehara, ketika dia menyebut Mr. Uehara sebagai M.C.--My comic (harus baca sendiri baru bisa ngerti kenapa saya suka dengan baris terakhir ini).Buku ini saya sertakan dalam - Serapium interpreting problem 2013- 2013 TBR Pile analyzing problem Clint: i used to be consistently type of hesitant to learn whatever through Osamu Dazai simply because I had the effect that he was once type of emo. I nonetheless imagine you cannot have a number of suicide mess ups in case you are fascinated with it, and this man did, and was once recognized for it. I additionally had the effect that he used to be relatively into Christianity (not as a faith yet as a provide of symbols) and western writers, specially French, and that he was once a type of Asians completely desirous to look as un-"Asian" as possible. i used to be form of flawed in regards to the final things, yet I nonetheless imagine he used to be a pathetic little bug if he wishes that many percentages to get a suicide right. yet then again, being a pathetic little malicious program is cause sufficient to kill your self for a few people. might be failing such a lot of instances depressed him quite a bit he obtained it right? Anyway, this ebook was once far better than i would proposal it should be. i am often no longer into tales that concentrate on families, yet this was once great, with this simply crushing feeling of unhappiness and pointlessness that I can' consider ever seeing performed so good before. It
wasn't long, less than two hundred pages in my edition, and that i got here away with the effect that he fairly was once form of spiritually in-line with the French decadents and wasn't simply taking part in a part.
