Ongewenst gedrag in het mbo: Is er op mijn school te veel ongewenst gedrag? Dr. M. J. C. Koerhuis
Docent Chris kijkt zuchtend zijn klas rond. Hij heeft geprobeerd de opdracht zo goed mogelijk uit te leggen en ze zelfstandig aan het werk te zetten. Als hij nu de balans opmaakt lijkt het erop dat sommigen inderdaad bezig zijn. Anderen zijn echter aan het kletsen, hangen lusteloos achterover en één leerling zit op zijn tafel te krassen. Is dit normaal ‘adolescentengedrag’ of moet hier wat veranderen?
Inleiding Ongewenst gedrag in het VMBO is een terugkerend onderwerp in de media, maar ook op scholen zelf. Zowel leerlingen als docenten klagen dat veel leerlingen zich niet houden aan regels en dat het leef- en leerklimaat op school verslechtert. De JOB-monitor (een landelijk tevredenheidsonderzoek onder mbo-scholieren) van 2007 laat bijvoorbeeld zien dat 27% van de leerlingen op het MBO wel eens last heeft van discriminatie, 20% van intimidatie en 16% van pesten. Negen procent van de mbo-leerlingen geeft aan zich onveilig te voelen op school. Dit is een verdubbeling van het percentage in 2001 (Job monitor, 2008). Ook uit zelfrapportage onderzoek (Laan, van der Blom, 2006) blijkt dat 16% procent van de jongeren in het voortgezet onderwijs aangeeft wel eens iets van school of werk te hebben gestolen, 15% iemand wel eens heeft bedreigt of bang gemaakt en 11% iemand wel eens heeft geslagen. Behalve dat ongewenst gedrag op school het leef- en leerklimaat negatief beïnvloedt kan het ook een belangrijk signaal zijn dat er met de leerling die het ongewenste gedrag laat zien, zelf iets aan de hand is. Uit onderzoek blijkt dat ongewenst gedrag een van de voorspellers is van voortijdig schoolverlaten (Janosz, LeBlanc, Bloulerice, & Tremblay 2000). Ongewenst gedrag kan onder andere voortkomen uit motivatieproblemen en/of persoonlijke problemen. Beide factoren zijn weer belangrijke redenen die leerlingen opgeven om met een opleiding te stoppen (Meijers, Kuijpers & Bakker, 2006). Ook uit eigen onderzoek bleek dat het serieus overwegen om een andere opleiding te doen, de belangrijkste voorspeller was voor alle soorten ongewenst gedrag op school bij jongens op het mbo (Koerhuis, 2007). Hoewel ongewenst gedrag dus een belangrijk onderwerp is in het mbo vindt onderzoek naar ongewenst gedrag vooral plaats onder vmbo-leerlingen. Daarbij zijn er maar weinig instrumenten die ongewenst gedrag van leerlingen op school in kaart kunnen brengen. De vragenlijst voor Sociaal Ongewenst Gedrag Op School (SOGOS) probeert deze leemte op te vangen.

Waarom een nieuw instrument? Oorspronkelijk heette de SOGOS “the Questionnaire for Maladaptive Social Behavior” (QMSB). Deze Engelse term werd gekozen, omdat in een Engelstalig proefschrift werd gerapporteerd over de ontwikkeling van het instrument (Koerhuis, 2007). Vanaf nu kiezen we echter voor de term SOGOS, omdat de vragenlijst specifiek gericht is op het Nederlandse onderwijs. Wat verstaan we nu eigenlijk onder ongewenst gedrag? Olweus, Block en Radke-Yarrow (1986) definiëren ongewenst gedrag als volgt: “een schending van een formele of informele regel, waaronder zowel ernstige criminele daden of het duidelijk geen respect tonen voor algemeen geldende normen van geaccepteerd gedrag vallen, als meer heimelijk en voorbijgaand oppositioneel en kwetsend gedrag” (p. 2). Wij sluiten ons bij deze definitie aan, maar focussen op het gedrag van leerlingen binnen de schoolcontext.
Er zijn verschillende redenen om een nieuw instrument te ontwikkelen om ongewenst gedrag op school te meten. Bestaande instrumenten 1) meten geen breed spectrum aan ongewenst gedrag, 2) vragen niet naar concreet gedrag op school, 3) zijn geen zelfevaluatievragenlijst of 4) zijn niet geschikt voor adolescenten. Hieronder worden deze vijf redenen kort toegelicht. 1. Ongewenst gedrag is meer dan delinquent gedrag Er is zeer veel onderzoek beschikbaar over het vóórkomen en verklaren van zowel probleemgedrag in het algemeen als van specifieke soorten probleemgedrag. Veruit het meeste onderzoek is gericht op het verklaren en voorspellen van delinquent gedrag, druggebruik, en gewelddadig gedrag. Minder aandacht is er voor internaliserend gedrag, onbeleefd gedrag en ongewenst gedrag op school. Als ongewenst gedrag op school het onderwerp van onderzoek is, wordt meestal op één of enkele aspecten gelet, zoals pestgedrag, spijbelgedrag, of uitkomsten van het overtreden van schoolregels, zoals worden geschorst. Logischerwijs sluiten beschikbare instrumenten bij deze onderzoeken aan. Zo zijn er voornamelijk verschillende instrumenten om delinquent gedrag onder jongeren te meten, maar ontbreken instrumenten die een breed spectrum aan ongewenst gedrag van adolescenten op school meten. 2. Ongewenst gedrag is gedrag en geen eigenschap Er zijn goede vragenlijsten (bijvoorbeeld the Youth Self Report, Achenbach, 1991a en Rutter School Behaviour Scale, Rutter, Tizard & Whitmore, 1970) die als doel hebben risicoleerlingen te identificeren door leerlingen te laten antwoorden in hoeverre een bepaald

gedrag of situatie op hen van toepassing is, in plaats van hoe vaak een bepaald soort gedrag door
de
leerling
vertoond
wordt.
Daarmee
willen
de
onderzoekers
persoonlijkheidskenmerken in kaart brengen die ongewenst gedrag kunnen voorspellen. Het doel van de SOGOS is uitdrukkelijk niet om mogelijke achterliggende oorzaken van ongewenst gedrag op school te identificeren, maar om feitelijk vast te kunnen stellen hoe vaak (een bepaalde groep) leerlingen bepaalde vormen van ongewenst gedrag op school vertonen. 3. De leerling kan het beste over ongewenst gedrag rapporteren In tegenstelling tot enkele andere gedragsvragenlijsten (bijvoorbeeld Conners Teacher Rating Scale, Blöte & Curfs, 1986; SCHOBL-R, Bleichrodt, Resing & Zaal, 1993) is de SOGOS een zelfevaluatie-vragenlijst, omdat wij verwachten dat leerlingen zelf de meest betrouwbare bron zijn om te rapporteren over hun eigen ongewenste gedrag. Ook ander onderzoek (Farrington, Loeber, Stouthamer-Loeber & Schmidt, 1996) heeft aangetoond dat zelfevaluatie-instrumenten over probleemgedrag betrouwbare informatie opleveren. Ouders hebben naarmate jongeren ouder worden, steeds minder zicht op het gedrag van jongeren in verschillende situaties op school. Docenten op het mbo zien hun leerlingen niet de hele dag, maar slechts tijdens een of enkele lesuren per dag en hebben geen zicht op het gedrag van de leerlingen tijdens andere lessen of buiten de lessen om op school. 4. De vragen moeten geschikt zijn voor adolescenten Tot slot zijn er maar weinig vragenlijsten die gericht zijn op jongeren tussen de 16 en 20 jaar oud. Veel gedragsvragenlijsten waarin ook items opgenomen zijn over ongewenst gedrag op school zijn geschikt voor jongere kinderen (bijvoorbeeld Bristol Social Adjustment Guide, Stott & Sykes, 1974; Conners Teacher Rating Scale, Blöte & Curfs, 1986; CBCL, Achenbach, 1991b; SCHOBL-R, Bleichrodt, Resing & Zaal, 1993). Veel items zijn daarmee niet geschikt om ongewenst gedrag op school van adolescenten in kaart te brengen.
Constructie en Inhoud van de SOGOS Om een vragenlijst te construeren die inhoudelijk relevant is én daarnaast ook betrouwbaar is en valide is het nodig verschillende stappen te zetten. We zijn begonnen met het bestuderen van bestaande vragenlijsten en literatuur, om belangrijke onderwerpen op het gebied van ongewenst gedrag te identificeren en om relevante items te selecteren. Daarnaast is op verschillende mbo-instellingen geobserveerd in en buiten klassen, en zijn interviews gehouden met leerlingen, docenten en andere medewerkers. Uit deze verkenning is een lijst met 77 items gekomen voor de eerste versie van de vragenlijst. Vervolgens zijn in drie pilot-onderzoeken deze items getest: zijn de vragen voor iedereen duidelijk, kunnen we statistisch aantonen dat de vragen betrouwbaar én valide zijn?

De eindversie van de SOGOS bestaat uit 43 items die behoren bij vier soorten ongewenst gedrag: 1. Ongewenst gedrag ten opzichte van school en schoolwerk (15 items). Bijvoorbeeld: spijbelen, werk te laat inleveren, anderen afleiden. 2. Delinquent gedrag (11 items): Bijvoorbeeld: expres spullen van een leerling beschadigen, wapens dragen op school. 3. Onvriendelijk gedrag (8 items). Bijvoorbeeld: een andere leerling uitschelden, een docent uitdagen. 4. Teruggetrokken gedrag (9 items). Bijvoorbeeld: bij het samenwerken wachten tot iemand anders de leiding neemt, tussen de lessen door jezelf afzonderen van anderen. Bij elk item wordt de leerling gevraagd hoe vaak hij/zij dit gedrag de afgelopen drie maanden op school heeft gedaan. De leerling kan kiezen uit vijf antwoordmogelijkheden: nooit, niet vaak, soms, best vaak, heel vaak. We konden uiteindelijk concluderen dat de SOGOS een vragenlijst is met een sterke structuur en betrouwbaarheid. Dit geldt voor zowel de steekproef als geheel, als voor substeekproeven gebaseerd op geslacht en niveau van de opleiding. Bewijs voor validiteit is gedeeltelijk gevonden. Er zijn drie validatiestudies uitgevoerd om te onderzoeken in hoeverre we inderdaad meten wat we willen meten (bijvoorbeeld, als we delinquent gedrag beogen te meten, meten we dat dan ook, of meten we stiekem agressief gedrag?). Bij convergente validiteit wordt gelet in hoeverre vergelijkbare constructen inderdaad met elkaar overeen komen: bijvoorbeeld lijkt Delinquent gedrag van de SOGOS op Delinquent gedrag van een andere vragenlijst? Bij discriminante validiteit wordt juist gekeken of verschillende soorten gedrag inderdaad van elkaar verschillen. Bijvoorbeeld, verschilt Delinquent gedrag van de SOGOS met Agressief gedrag van een andere vragenlijst? In elk van de drie validatiestudies werd convergente validiteit bevestigd. Bewijs voor discriminante validiteit werd gedeeltelijk gevonden.
Gebruik van de SOGOS in de onderwijspraktijk We kunnen ongewenst gedrag van leerlingen in het mbo met de SOGOS nu betrouwbaar meten, maar welk doel dient dit nu precies? We kunnen nu bijvoorbeeld de vraag van Chris uit de begincasus beantwoorden: ‘Vertoont zijn klas leerlingen meer ongewenst gedrag dan een gemiddelde groep mbo-leerlingen?’ Ook kunnen we antwoord krijgen op vragen als ‘Welk type ongewenst gedrag overheerst in deze klas?’ ‘Scoort een bepaalde individuele leerling hoger op onvriendelijk gedrag dan andere leerlingen?’

De SOGOS kan zowel individueel als groepsgewijs worden afgenomen. Er bestaat in principe geen tijdslimiet voor het invullen van de vragenlijst. In de meeste gevallen duurt het invullen van de vragenlijst ongeveer 10 tot 15 minuten. Afhankelijk van het doel kan gekozen worden om de hele vragenlijst in te laten vullen, of een beperking te maken tot één of meer gedragscategorieën. Per categorie gedrag moeten alle vragen worden ingevuld. De afname kan begeleid worden door een volwassene, een speciale opleiding om de afname te begeleiden is niet nodig. Het is wel belangrijk dat duidelijk vermeld wordt dat leerlingen de vragenlijst anoniem kunnen invullen. Ook is het belangrijk dat leerlingen worden geïnstrueerd om niet met elkaar te overleggen en niet in elkaars vragenlijst te kijken.
Met behulp van een aanvullend onderzoek, gesubsidieerd door het NITPB, zijn landelijke normen bepaald en is een handleiding geschreven. Deze handleiding is vervolgens voorgelegd aan de COTAN en door hen beoordeeld. De COTAN kwam tot de conclusie dat de SOGOS voldoende scoort op de uitgangspunten bij de testconstructie, de kwaliteit van het testmateriaal, de kwaliteit van de handleiding, de normen en de begripsvaliditeit. De SOGOS scoort goed op de betrouwbaarheid en onvoldoende op de criteriumvaliditeit. Nu de SOGOS deze scores heeft gekregen van de COTAN kan het worden opgenomen in de indicatiestelling voor de rugzakfinanciering. De SOGOS is door de WAII (Werkgroep Advisering Instrumentarium Indicatiestelling), genoemd als een veelbelovend instrument ten behoeve van de indicatiestelling rugzak financiering mbo (Resing, Evers, Koomen & Bleichrodt, 2007). Met name op het gebied van omgang met schoolse taken (motivatie, werkhouding) en sociaal gedrag t.o.v. medeleerlingen en de leerkrachten is door de WAII voor deze doelgroep een tekort aan goede instrumenten geconstateerd. De SOGOS zou deze leemte goed kunnen opvullen. Hieronder bespreken we drie mogelijkheden om de SOGOS in te zetten. 1. Vergelijken van een groep met de normgroep Wanneer het doel is om een groep (klassen, opleidingen, scholen, niveaus, een specifiek geselecteerde groep) te vergelijken met de normgroep kunnen groepen leerlingen de vragenlijst tegelijkertijd invullen, onder toezicht van een docent. Het invullen gebeurt anoniem. Ook kan per leerling aangegeven worden in welke categorie (van zeer laag tot zeer hoog) zijn/ haar gemiddelde score valt en worden geïnventariseerd hoeveel leerlingen in de gevarenzone verkeren. De resultaten kunnen aanleiding zijn voor het nemen van bepaalde maatregelen om ongewenst gedrag in een bepaalde groep te verminderen. Als bijvoorbeeld blijkt dat een bepaalde groep bovengemiddeld scoort op ongewenst gedrag t.o.v. school en schoolwerk

kan besloten worden om deze groep een training te laten volgen om dit gedrag te verminderen. 2. Vergelijken opleidingsniveaus of type opleiding Het kan interessant zijn de scores van niveaus of opleidingen met elkaar te vergelijken, indien men wil weten of leerlingen van de eigen school van een bepaald opleidingsniveau of type opleiding vergelijkbaar scoren met het landelijk gemiddelde. Als de gemiddelde score van de eigen groep buiten deze reikwijdte valt kan men concluderen dat de eigen groep wezenlijk hoger/ lager scoort dan gemiddeld.
3. Vergelijken van individuele leerlingen met de normgroep Bij individueel gebruik van de vragenlijst is het belangrijk stil te staan bij de gevoeligheid van de informatie die gevraagd wordt in de SOGOS. Bij individueel gebruik is het logischerwijze niet mogelijk de anonimiteit te garanderen. Om sociaal wenselijke antwoorden tegen te gaan kan benadrukt worden dat de resultaten vertrouwelijk worden behandeld, en niet met derden (bv medeleerlingen, ouders, politie en andere docenten) worden besproken. Daarnaast kan besloten worden om het meest gevoelige onderwerp, namelijk delinquent gedrag, niet in te laten vullen. Ook is het belangrijk dat het doel en het belang van het invullen van de vragenlijst duidelijk worden gemaakt aan de leerling. Afhankelijk van de resultaten van de leerling kunnen maatregelen genomen worden om ongewenst gedrag van de betreffende leerling te verminderen. Bijvoorbeeld het geven van extra aandacht aan de omgang met medeleerlingen of docenten. Daarnaast kan SOGOS onderdeel zijn van het portfolio. Tot slot Een belangrijke beperking betreft de anonimiteit. Tijdens het onderzoek hebben leerlingen hun antwoorden anoniem kunnen invullen. We beseffen dat bij individuele scoring en vergelijking met de norm anonimiteit niet altijd gegarandeerd kan worden aan de leerling. Het is mogelijk dat de antwoorden van de leerlingen hierdoor beïnvloed kunnen worden en lager uitvallen dan verwacht. Het doel van de SOGOS is het identificeren van (groepen) jongeren die relatief hoog scoren op een of meerdere vormen van ongewenst gedrag. De SOGOS geeft inzicht in welk gedrag en in welke mate door een bepaalde jongere of groep jongeren wordt vertoond. Het geeft dus geen informatie over mogelijke oorzaken waarom een jongere zich zo gedraagt. Ook geeft het geen informatie over een effectieve aanpak om dit gedrag te verminderen.
