International Seminar “Language Maintenance and Shift II”, July 5-6, 2012
Editors’ Note This international seminar on Language Maintenance and Shift II is a continuation of the previous international seminar with the same theme conducted by the Master Program in Linguistics, Diponegoro University in July 2011. We do hope that the seminar with this theme can become a yearly program of the Master Program in Linguistics, Diponegoro University, as we see that this topic still needs our serious attention due to the inevitable impact of globalization on the life of indigenous languages. We would like to thank the seminar committee for putting together the seminar that gave rise to this collection of papers. Thanks also go to the head and secretary of the Master Program in Linguistics Diponegoro University, without whom the seminar would not have been possible. The table of contents lists all the papers presented at the seminar. The first five papers are those presented by invited keynote speakers. They are Prof. Dr. Hanna (Balai Bahasa Provinsi Sulawesi Tenggara, Indonesia), Prof. Dr. Bambang Kaswanti Purwo (Atma Jaya Catholic University, Indonesia), Dr. Sugiyono (Language Center, Indonesia), Peter Suwarno, Ph.D (Arizona State University), and Herudjati Purwoko, Ph.D (Diponegoro University). In terms of the topic areas, there are 33 papers on language maintenance, 24 papers on language learning, 19 paper on sociolinguistics, 15 paper on pragmatics, 8 papers on discourse analysis, 8 paper on morphology, 2 papers on syntax, 2 papers on translation, 1 papers on psycholinguistics, 1 papers on phonology, and 1 papers on semantics.

International Seminar “Language Maintenance and Shift II” July 5-6, 2012 WOMAN REPRESENTATION AT BUMPER STICKERS ON THE BACKS OF DUMP TRUCKS Hetty Catur Ellyawati Universitas Semarang
[email protected] Muhammad Arief Budiman Unaki Semarang
[email protected] The use of woman as a commercial object or advertisements through written expression by the drivers at the bumper stickers on the backs of dump trucks is rapidly adopted. It is said that the more peculiar of the written expression, the higher prestige earned by the truck drivers. This research aims to analysis the bumper stickers on the backs of dump trucks that use woman as an object of its written expression by using appraisal system. The data used in this research are from blogs through online that list some bumper stickers from Jabotabek area. The methods used to analyze the data are referential method and substitusional method. The result reveals that the representation of woman as an object of written expression at the bumper stickers on the backs of dump trucks always has negative connotation, especially as an object of sexual matters by the men. Keywords: woman as a commercial object, bumper stickers on the backs of dump trucks, appraisal system.
Introduction Patriarchy is a society in which the oldest male is the leader of the family, or a society controlled by men in which they use their power to their own advantage (Cambridge Dictionary). The controller, that is the male, hold autority over women, children and poverty. The society controlled by men includes social norms in which the men can decide which one can be done and which one can not be done by the members of the society. Women, expecially their characterictic, as one of the members of the society are shaped by the social norms exist. The description above implies female subordination. Subordination toward female always put woman in the second row behind man. Woman only considers as an object of man’s stuff, in society, in a family even in a office. This study is aimed to identify the use of woman as a commercial object or advertisements especially at the bumper stickers on the backs of dump trucks that are usually written by men as the drivers. This study shows how men attitudes toward women in text at the bumper stickers on the backs of dump trucks. Appraisal: Negotiating Attitudes Appraisal (Martin and Rose, 2003: 22) is concerned with evaluation of attitudes that are negotiated in a text, the strength of the feelings involved and the ways in which values are sourced and readers aligned. There are three aspects of appraisal (Martin and Rose, 2003: 22-46): attitudes, how they are amplified and their sources. Attitudes have to do with evaluating things, people’s character and their feeling. The evaluation can be more or less intense, that is they may be more or less amplified. It also can be about the writer’s own or it may be attributed to some other source. Three kinds of attitudes are affect, judgement and appreciation. Affect explores how people express their feeling. It can be negative or positive feeling expressed directly or implied. “I was torn to pieces” is an example of negative expression of attitude. Judgement talks about judging people’s character. It is differ between personal judgments of admiration or criticism and moral judgements of praise or condemnation. Example of implicitly admiration is ‘He works in a top security structure’ while the example of direct personal admiration is ‘He is so popular’. Appreciation is about how people feel about people and the way they behave. Appreciation of things can be about the attitudes about TV shows, films, books, CDs or about paintings, sculptures, homes, public buildings, parks, about plays, recitals, parades, and soon. Example of this kind of attitudes is ‘A beautiful relationship’. 434
International Seminar “Language Maintenance and Shift II” July 5-6, 2012 It can be said that one distinctive feature of amplifications is that they are gradable. It means we can say how strongly we feel about someone or something, for example ‘her first love is sharply intelligent’. By saying that, the intelligent is put on a scale and ranks it highly in relation to other choices, such as extremely intelligent, sharply intelligent, really intelligent, quite intelligent and soon. There are two kinds of amplifications. The first is force, it is about intensify meaning such as happy, delighted, ecstatic. The second is focus. Focus is about ‘sharpening’ or ‘softening’ categories of people and things using words such as exactly or real, sort of, kind of. The last part of appraisal is sources of attitudes that has to do with who the evaluations are coming from. There are several source according to Kristeva, quoted by Martin and Rose (2003: 44). The first is heteroglossia, it is when the source comes from many sources not only of the author alone. The second is monoglossia, it is when the source only from the author. Context Context here refers to context of situation by Halliday and Hasan (1985: 12) that consists of three headings; the field, tenor dan mode. Field refers to what is happening, to the nature of the social action that is taking place, It deals with what is it that the participants are engaged in and in which the language figures as some essential componen. Tenor is about who is taking part, to the nature of the participants, it deals with their statuses and roles, for example what kinds of role relationship obtain among the participants. The last is mode. It refers to what part the language is playing, what it is that the participants are expecting the language to do for them in thatt situation. The Source of the Data and Method of Study The methods used to analyze the data of this research are referential method and substitusional method. Referential method is used by refering words into their meaning that is suitable for their context, while substitusional method is used to validate the referent meaning used in referential method whether it is true or not by subtituing the word to another word. The data are taken from blogs that list some bumper stickers from Jabotabek area using purposive sampling method by the sample of 42 data. Discussion From the data analysis, the written expression at the bumper stickers on the backs of dump trucks consists of two categories, they are, first refers to sexual representation toward woman. This category found the most in the data. The second deals with woman’s physical appearance. The source of the attitudes is only from one source that is from the drivers of the trucks. Below is the discussion of the finding. Sexual representation toward woman The use of appraisal system that expresses sexual representation toward woman in the data is found the most. The examples of the analysis below: a. Papa pulang Mama digoyang Data (a) is an example of the use of appraisal system that is appreciating something. The participants involve in data (a) are ‘papa and mama’, it means ‘papa and mama’ has marrital relationship. In marrital relationship, the word ‘digoyang’ refers to sexual activities. The affix di- In data (a) shows that woman as mama is an object of the activity because ‘di’ means passive voice. It is clear that the attitude that man has, the driver who made that written expression, is about evaluating the sexual activity toward woman when he comes home from work. Here, as usual, woman becomes an object of man’s activity. The word ‘digoyang’ will not refer to sexual activity if the word replace by another word that is more neutral in meaning. For example ‘Papa pulang Mama senang’. The word ‘senang’ with the context of marriage, refers more to the feeling of happiness that the husband finally comes home after working. b. Jangan dinikahi bila segel rusak Data (b) ‘jangan dinikahi bila segel rusak’ refers to the meaning of ‘do not marry if she is not virgin’. The word ‘do not marry if she is not virgin’ comes from the context of Javanese culture. In Javanese culture, someone who can be married or ‘dinikahi’ is usually a woman. It never happens that woman marries a man. It is always the man who has right to purpose to a woman in a society. When woman purposes a man, she will consider as an impolite woman or even called ‘hyperactive’ woman. The refering of the word ‘segel’ to word ‘virginity’ is because ‘segel’ means ‘pengaman’ or something where something else can come and go safely. In a sexual activity, the meaning of those two words is closely related. So ‘jangan dinikahi bila segel rusak’ is one of the attitude of man, 435
International Seminar “Language Maintenance and Shift II” July 5-6, 2012 driver, who feels that he should not marry a woman who is not virgin because for a man, virginity considers as an important deal. Even, a man can call off a marriage planning if he knows that the woman is not virgin any longer, but in the same circumtance, it will not happen when the problem is on the man side. Data (b) just like in data (a) is used appreciation to evaluate the attitude of a man towards a woman. Both indirectly stated. And both place a woman as a sexual object. c. Aduhai nikmatnya At a glance, there is nothing deals with sexual representation toward woman with that data (c), but when it is supported with a picture of a sexy woman on the backs of dump trucks, the meaning of sexual matters is truly connected. A woman, physically and non physically, has many things that can attract a man to his own fantasy of sexual matters. Data (c) can have another meaning that does not relate to sexual matter if the word ‘nikmatnya’ substitutes for the word ‘lezatnya’ because word ‘lezat’ usually refers to food. The use of appraisal system in data (c) is attitude of affect in which the man, driver, feels good about the picture he saw. Woman’s Physical Appearance d. Gadis sexy ibukota The word ‘sexy’ literally means sexually attractive. A portrait of a woman with long hair, slender neck and wet red lips who wears mini outfit supports a man to think about sex. This impression, actually, that want to be given by the man, driver, who draws that text at the bumper stickers on the backs of dump trucks. The impression attracts man to think about woman as a sexual object so that it can be an amusement when they have to work hard in the road as drivers. The attitude that the driver has towards data (d) is affect that is said directly. Eventhough the attitude is a positive feeling about woman appearance, the driver feels good about the appearance, but data (d) as well as another data, place woman as an object of sexual matters. It can be so different if the word ‘sexy’ substitutes for ‘beautiful’. The word ‘beautiful’ means attractive, especially for a face of woman. e. Kembang gadis The word ‘kembang’ means the part of a plant which is often brightly coloured with a pleasant smell while ‘gadis’ is an adult female human being who has not marry yet. When we join the meaning of those two words in data (e) we can have the meaning of those words as an adult female human being who is pleasant. This is a positive attitude that man has about woman. So it can be said that data (e) uses the appraisal system of affect that expresses a positive feeling of a man, the driver, towards a woman. The feeling is still about appearance of woman, especially about woman’s physical appearance. Conclusion Woman is a human being who has a beauty aspect. This aspect is used by the drivers as their object in their writing in their trucks. From the analysis above using appraisal theories, we can conclude that the drivers use the woman as an object in two different ways. The first is for their sexual fantasy. The second is for their admiration of the physical appearances of the woman. Both of these ways are considered having negative terms to a woman who is assumed only as the object. Woman is taken for not having equal position as the man.
