Abstract Smoking amongst adolescents remains a problem in the Netherlands. One of the main reasons adolescents start to smoke is the influence of friends. This is called peer pressure. Inoculation is a way to make people more resistant to persuasion by teaching its receivers how to counterargue. In this study, inoculation is used to make adolescents more resistant to peer pressure to start smoking. Moreover, the social network is used to spread the effects of inoculation. The main goal of the research was to find out whether when a small target group is inoculated, the rest of the group benefits from its effects. An anti-smoking Facebook campaign which incorporates the inoculation message was designed to teach adolescents how to counter-argue. An experiment was conducted with students aged 12 to 16 (N=338). In the experimental group, only 20% of the students in the classrooms received the inoculation in the form of an anti-smoking Facebook page. In the control group, none of the students received the inoculation. Results show that the anti-smoking Facebook page was not able to maintain the intention to smoke, attitude towards smoking, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control over time. Moreover, the inoculation message was not able to teach more counterarguments than the non-inoculation messages. Since the anti-smoking Facebook inoculation was not effective, the effect could not have spread. The ineffectiveness may have to do with psychological reactance. To make future inoculation messages more effective, it is suggested that the inoculation message is not explicit, but implicit.

Acknowledgements Before you lies the thesis „Inducing resistance to peer pressure to start smoking using inoculation and the social network‟. The road to this thesis was a bumpy one. Starting as a graduate student, one does not think of the possibility to research this kind of topic. In my case, I started off with the „wrong‟ study. After two years of studying, I discovered that I liked doing research, but not in the field I was studying. Because I wanted to stay in the field of marketing and research, I decided to focus on communication science. In the years of my bachelor, I did not develop my interest for the commercial side of marketing any further, but I became more interested in the social side of marketing. I became very interested in how one can make people resistant to persuasion, instead of focusing more on how to persuade people to engage in commercial activities. In my two years of the research master of social and cultural science, I developed this interest further. Therefore, I am glad that I have found my topic of interest and that I was able to graduate on this subject.

The finishing of this thesis represents the end of my time as a student. A time I enjoyed, not only because I learned a lot during this period, but also because I had wonderful experiences which I will remember my whole life. Although writing a thesis is a solitary activity, I could not have done it without the help of a lot of people. First of all, I want to thank my thesis supervisors, Moniek Buijzen and Esther Rozendaal. 1. Research topic and questions The damage caused by smoking cigarettes is nowadays widespread common knowledge and is a major public health concern. Despite this knowledge, smoking amongst teenagers remains a problem. In the Netherlands, 18% of adolescents smoke. Whereas amongst children going to primary school (aged 4-11) there are few reports of smoking, of adolescents who go to secondary school (aged 12 -18) it is reported that the numbers who have smoked in the last four weeks varies from 1% to 42%, with the highest percentage being reported smoking at the age of 18. Adolescents in the first two classes of secondary school (ages 11-14) have the smallest numbers who smoke (1-15%). From this age on, smoking increases up to 42% by the age of 18 (STIVORO, 2012). When smoking can be prevented at an early stage of adolescence, smoking in later stages of life can be reduced. Many attempts have already been made to limit the number of adolescents who smoke. This has been mostly done by means of anti-smoking campaigns. For example, Flynn et al. (1994) found that intervention through schools when combined with mass media campaigns are more effective in lowering the risk of smoking, than school intervention alone. Also, Allen, Vallone, Vargyas, and Healton (2009) found that the Truth-campaign, a campaign against smoking in the United States that was targeted at youth, prevents smoking initiation. However, media campaigns do not always have complete coverage. Mass media messages do not always reach all of its intended receivers. For example, in the case of a television commercial it depends on the number of viewers. However, it is important that the message does reach the entire target group. Therefore, more research is needed to find out how antismoking campaigns can be optimized to reach and influence as far as is possible. To reach adolescents, social media networks, like Facebook and Twitter could be used. The percentage of children aged between 12 and 18 years that use social media in the Netherlands is 93%. The mobile phone is thereby an important device. In this age group, 59% of the children use a mobile phone daily to participate in social networks (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek, 2013). The reach of social media is thus relatively large. Not only is the reach of social media big, social media are also useful for targeting. Facebook, for example, has as the advantage that the target group of a media message can be precisely targeted, because demographics are available. A Facebook campaign against smoking may therefore be fruitful, because it has the capacity to reach the intended individuals.

There are different ways as to how adolescents can be persuaded to start smoking. In Europe, there is a ban on Tobacco advertising on television. Most countries however, expanded this ban on Tobacco advertising to other media. In the Netherlands, advertisements for tobacco are banned everywhere, except for tobacco shops (Bieleman, Kruize, & Zimmerman, 2010). But there are also other media messages apart from advertisements, like smoking in movies. It is found that smoking in movies leads to a higher smoking initiation amongst adults (Dalton et al., 2003; Morgenstern, 2013). Interpersonal communication can also be intended to persuade adolescents to start smoking. Peer influence being the most important factor in persuading adolescents (e.g. Huisman & Bruggeman, 2012; Kobus, 2003; Urberg, Shyu & Liang, 1990). Adolescents are at a new stage of their lives, where important changes take place. Not only does the body of adolescents change, but also social structures change. Previously, the influence of parents was the most important influence. However, in this phase, adolescents are more and more influenced by their peers (Pfau, 1997). Not only can peers encourage damaging behaviour like smoking, they can also discourage this kind of behaviour. Numerous studies show a positive relation between peers and (non) smoking (e.g. Huisman & Bruggeman, 2012; Kobus, 2003; Urberg et al., 1990). This means that peers can stimulate smoking, but have also the ability to stimulate non smoking. It has been argued, that in particular opinion leaders are capable of influencing others (Valente & Davis, 1999). The degree to which people can influence others varies amongst individuals. Opinion leaders are better able to persuade than others towards new ideas and behaviour. It is possible to make adolescents more resistant to persuasion to start smoking using inoculation (Pfau, Bockern & Kang, 1992). Inoculation is a method to learn how to counterargue. This counter-arguing makes people more resistant to persuasion. A meta-analysis of 54 studies showed that inoculation makes people less susceptible to persuasive messages (Banas & Rains, 2010). The existing literature on inoculation for health education mainly focuses on smoking (e.g. Pfau et al., 1992) and alcohol use (e.g. Godbold & Pfau, 2000; Parker, Ivanov & Compton, 2012). The kind of persuasion addressed in these studies is marketing activities, like commercials. Because advertising for smoking is prohibited (Bieleman et al., 2010), the present study addresses peer pressure to start smoking. This form of persuasion, has not been researched yet. Therefore it is interesting to discover whether inoculation is able to make people more resistant to peer pressure. Recent research has also focussed on the role of social interaction of the inoculation message (David, Cappella, & Fishbein, 2006; Dunlop, 2011; Hwang, 2012; Ivanov et al., 2012). The idea is that social interaction reinforces the inoculation message: when people talk 2

about the inoculation campaign, the effect will reinforce itself. However, Compton and Pfau (2009) suggest that the effect of inoculation can also be spread in a social network by wordof-mouth communication. Also, Southwell and Yzer (2009) suggest that interpersonal communication might extend the effects of inoculation. This means that peers can spread the effects of inoculation. If inoculation is used to induce resistance to peer pressure to start smoking, these effects could be spread by the social network. The spreading of inoculation effects in the social context has, however, not yet been researched. This will be researched in this paper. The previous statements may seem paradoxical, because it is expected that adolescents influence each other to start smoking, but it is also stated that peers could prevent each other from smoking. Firstly, it is expected that adolescents pressure each other to start smoking. The inoculation should make adolescents more resistant to this peer pressure. Secondly, it is expected that the effects of inoculation can spread through the social network of the peer group. In short, in the first case, peers are trying to influence each other‟s behaviour, which is referred to as peer pressure. The second form of peer influence, is the peer spreading of inoculation effects. The peer group spreads an increased resistance to peer pressure. From now on, this peer influence process will be called "peer spreading" of inoculation. So not only can peers influence others to start smoking (peer pressure), but peers could also make each other more resistant to peer pressure (peer spreading). By spreading media messages, an anti-smoking campaign could have a greater influence than initially expected. Because of the limited reach of (social) media campaigns, the spreading of inoculation is interesting to investigate. More research on the spreading of inoculation effects could be used in designing more effective intervention. In this way, when a small part of a target group is reached, the whole group could benefit from the effects. This leads to the following research question: Can the effects of inoculation to increase resistance to peer pressure to start smoking spread, so when a small target group is reached, the whole group benefits? The remainder of this thesis tries to answer this research question. In the following chapter the theory on the topic will be further explained. By means of explaining the behaviour of smoking, inoculation theory and the spreading of the effects of inoculation, hypotheses will be formulated. How these hypotheses will be tested is explained in chapter 3, and the results of the research can be found in chapter 4. The last chapter, chapter 5, will give an overview of the research and its results. In this chapter the conclusion and the discussion will be given. 3

2. Theory 2.1. Explaining smoking behaviour 2.1.1. Theory of planned behaviour The theory of planned behaviour holds that certain behaviour can be explained by the behavioural intention. This intention is influenced by several factors. The first is the attitude towards the behaviour, the second is the subjective norm and the third is the perceived behavioural control. The attitude towards the behaviour has a relation with the behavioural beliefs. The subjective norm has a relation with the normative beliefs, and the perceived behavioural control has a relation with control beliefs (Ajzen, 1991). Attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control together make that a person can have the intention to behave in a certain way and this intention can be translated into behaviour (Hartmann, 2009). Figure 1 shows the theory of planned behaviour. In the case of smoking, the attitude towards smoking, the subjective norm about smoking and the perceived behavioural control about smoking together predict the intention to smoke. In turn, the intention to smoke predicts the smoking behaviour itself.

When the attitude towards the behaviour is positive, this will influence the behavioural intention. The attitude is positive, when the behaviour is considered for example as good, positive, healthy and valuable (Hartmann, 2009). For smoking it holds that the more positive or healthy a behaviour is valued, the bigger the chance is one will conduct the behaviour of smoking. The perceived behavioural control is whether a person believes he or she is able to control the behaviour. This means that in general, it should be possible to control the 4

behaviour, but also that the person has to believe he or she personally is able to control the behaviour (Hartmann, 2009). For example concerning adolescent smoking, the adolescents have to believe they have a place to smoke, making it possible to conduct the behaviour. Also, they have to believe they are able to get cigarettes and that they are therefore personally able to smoke. A high perceived behavioural control about smoking thus means that there is a bigger chance of the intention to smoke. The subjective norm is whether a person believes his or her important others are valuing this behaviour as positive. If important others approve of the behaviour, this will lead to higher chances of behavioural intention (Hartmann, 2009). The important others for adolescents are their peers. For adolescent smoking this means, that if the peers think that smoking is acceptable, the chances of intention to smoke are higher. These three aspects – attitude towards the behaviour, the subjective norm and the perceived behavioural control – influence the intention to smoke. Each of these aspects will be researched, to see how they are affected by an anti-smoking campaign.

2.1.1. Peer pressure As discussed above, the subjective norm is one of the determining factors of the behavioural intention to smoke. The subjective norm is the belief that important others will approve of the behaviour (Hartmann, 2009). For adolescents, the opinion of peers is very important. There is a high correlation between smoking and the smoking behaviour of friends. Peer influence holds that adolescents adapt their behaviour to match the behaviour of their peers (Mercken, Steglich, Sinclair, Holliday, and Moore, 2012). Different theories can explain why adolescents are influenced by peers. Social network theory holds that individuals are part of a larger social network. There is interdependence between the individuals, which creates relational ties between the individuals (Kobus, 2003). For adolescents, an example of a social network is the classroom in which they participate. The social network to which the adolescent belongs can influence his/her decisions and thereby behaviour, perception and attitudes (Kobus, 2003). If children are in a classroom where many of the children smoke, the chances are that because of interaction, the attitude towards smoking is affected. In the social network theory, a distinction is made between peer selection and peer influence/socialization. The first holds that peers select friends who are similar, while the latter refers to the process that friends do adapt to each other‟s ideas and behaviour due to the influence of peers (Kiuru, Burk, Laursen, Salmela-Aro & Nurmi, 2010; Kobus, 2003). Both 5

explain why there is a match between the behaviour in social networks. For smoking, this means that adolescents that smoke will select friends who smoke as well (selection). Adolescents who do not smoke could be influenced by friends to start smoking (influence/socialization). Because it is generally considered better to prevent adolescents from starting to smoke than to make them stop smoking, it is important that adolescents do not get the intention to smoke. Therefore, the attitude towards smoking, the perceived behavioural control and the subjective norm (the determinants of behavioural intention to smoke) should remain negative. A negative intention to smoke makes it less likely that adolescents will try smoking in the first place. Adolescents should therefore become more resistant to peer pressure to start smoking. When peers are attacked on their attitude, perceived behavioural control and/or subjective norm, they should be able to resist this attack. This means that there should be no change in attitude, perceived behavioural control and subjective norm when peer pressure takes place. When no change has taken place, this means that the adolescent was able to resist the peer pressure.

2.1. Inoculation theory In social science, inoculation is used as a strategy to make someone more resistant to persuasion (O‟Keefe, 2002, p.246; Pfau & Alison Szabo, 2003, p. 265). The same methodology that is used in biology and medicine, where people are vaccinated to prevent illness, can be performed in communication to prevent compliance to persuasion. This analogy is as follows. A vaccination holds a small amount of the disease. The body of person who receives a vaccination will then try to defend itself by making antibodies to combat this disease. In this way, the resistance to the disease is increased. So when a larger attack is performed on this person‟s body, the person will be able to resist this larger attack, whereas it would have taken longer, had the person not received the vaccination. When people are not vaccinated, the chances are higher that these people will get ill, compared to people who were vaccinated. The Inoculation theory holds that when a person is exposed to small amounts of persuasion, and this person is shown how to defend him or herself, this person‟s resistance will be induced (O‟Keefe, 2002, p.247; McGuire, 1964, p.200). The goal of inoculation is to bolster attitudes. This means that when a persuasive attack takes place, the receivers of inoculation are capable of defending themselves. When people are able to defend themselves, no change in attitude will take place. Moreover, this research focuses on other aspects of the theory of planned behaviour as well. Besides attitude, 6

also subjective norm and perceived behavioural control will be taken into account. The kind of attack this research focuses on is the influence of peer pressure to start smoking. More specifically, inoculation will be used to make adolescents more resistant to peer pressure to start smoking. The inoculation model consists of two major components: the threat component (i.e., emphasise that the receiver‟s attitude is at risk) and the refutational preemption (i.e., learning counter-arguments). Both threat and refutational preemption are in theory considered important and necessary for an inoculating message to have effect. These two major components of the inoculation model will now be discussed.

2.1.1. Threat Threat is thus seen as a major component and a requirement for inoculation to work (McGuire, 1964 & Pfau, 1997). Threat in inoculation is supposed to make clear in the message that the attitudes that are held, can and will be attacked in the future. It is a way of making the receivers aware of their vulnerability. Because of the threat component, receivers of the inoculation message will be motivated to bolster attitudes (Pfau, 1997). However, a meta-analysis of 54 studies found no significant effect of the perceived threat on the effectiveness of inoculation (Banas & Rains, 2010). There was no moderating effect of the amount of threat on the effectiveness of the inoculation. Therefore in this research, the perceived threat will not be taken into account. However, the inoculation message will still hold a threat-component, because it is an important component of the inoculation message. The perceived threat may not be a significant component, but the threat component in the inoculation message could also raise awareness, involvement and other aspects which are important for inoculation to work. Compton and Pfau state that “inoculation is impossible without threat” (as cited in Banas, & Rains, 2010, p.285). Perceived threat is thus not taken into account, while the inoculation message still holds a threat component.

2.1.2. Refutational preemption Refutational preemption is the other requirement for inoculation. Refutational preemptions “provide specific content that receivers can employ to strengthen attitudes against subsequent change” (Pfau, 1997, p.188). It creates the (cognitive) ability to come up with counterarguments by the inoculated person. The refutational preemption works as follows. The beliefs of an individual are first attacked, after which arguments are offered to counter these attacks. This process makes that the receiver of the inoculation learns how to counter-argue.

The counter-arguments that are learned, can then be reproduced by the receiver of the inoculation message. However, they can also come up with other counter-arguments (Pfau, 1997). Meta-analysis showed that inoculation was indeed also effective in refuting arguments that were not originally addressed by the inoculation message (Banas & Rains, 2010).

2.1.3. Experimental procedure McGuire (1964) developed an experimental procedure to test inoculation. Since the introduction by McGuire (1964), this way of studying inoculation has been successful and is the prevailing procedure used (e.g. An & Pfau, 2004; Compton & Pfau, 2004; Godbold & Pfau, 2000; Ivanov et al., 2012; Lin & Pfau, 2007; Parker, Ivanov & Compton, 2012). The first session of the experiment is a defensive session, whereas the second session consists of a session in which the existing attitudes will be attacked. In the first session, the inoculation takes place. In the second session, it is intended that the counter-arguments learned in the first session, and other counter-arguments, will be used.

2.2. Spreading inoculation As stated before, peers can have both a negative influence and a positive influence. The negative influence in this case is peer pressure to start smoking. The inoculation message is designed to make adolescents more resistant to this peer pressure. However, peers can also make other peers more resistant to peer pressure. This is the spreading of inoculation. Compton and Pfau (2009) argue that the effects of inoculation can spread through a social network. They argue that an inoculation message contains characteristics that stimulate talk. The threat makes people find reassurance from their social network and the attitude bolstering in the message makes the people more confident in defending their own opinion (Compton & Pfau, 2009, p. 19). The idea that inoculation stimulates talk was supported by a study of Compton and Pfau (2004). In their research, word-of-mouth behaviour was taken into account. Compared to people who received no inoculation, people who received inoculation tended to talk more about the subject.

2.2.1. Opinion leaders As the social network theory suggests, individuals influence each other by interacting. This theory holds that the negative behaviour of smoking can be spread by means of a social network (peer pressure), but also that positive effects can be spread through the social network. This influence can be about behaviour, perceptions and attitudes (Kobus, 2003). In the case of inoculation, this means that the effects of inoculation, which is the increased 8

resistance to persuasion (peer pressure), will spread through the adolescents over time among the classmates. It is therefore expected, that adolescents who are in the social network of inoculated adolescents are also more resistant to peer pressure, than those who are not in contact with inoculated persons. This means that social networks that have members amongst them, who are exposed to the anti-smoking media campaign, should benefit overall more than social groups where no one has been exposed. It is expected that opinion leaders play an important role in spreading the effects of inoculation. Rogers (1995) defines opinion leadership as “the degree to which an individual is able to influence other individuals‟ attitudes or overt behaviour informally in a desired way with relative frequency”. According to this, opinion leaders are able to influence others in their behaviour. Inoculation teaches how to counter-argue (behaviour). Therefore, it should be possible that opinion leaders spread this behaviour of counter-arguing, and thereby spread the effects of inoculation.

2.3. Hypotheses In the present study, inoculation will be designed as a media campaign. This media campaign takes form in a Facebook page directed at teenagers. Facebook is a social media website which is used widely by teenagers in the Netherlands. On average, 78% of the teenagers aged 15 to 18 use this network website. Of these users, 82% use Facebook daily. This makes Facebook the most popular social media for this age group (Turpijn, Kneefel, & van der Veer, 2015). Because of the popularity of Facebook, this network site can be used to reach the target group with an anti-smoking campaign. It is expected that this inoculation in the form of an anti-smoking Facebook campaign, will teach adolescents how to counter-argue. Thereby it will increase resistance to peer pressure. Because it is expected that the benefits of inoculation could be spread through the social network, it is hypothesised that the classrooms with inoculated children (the experimental group) on average are able to produce more counter-arguments after the attack, than classrooms where none of the children are inoculated (the control group).

H1a: For the experimental group, the number of counter-arguments after the attack is higher, than for the control group.

This difference between the experimental and the control group can be explained by the inoculation message: the anti-smoking Facebook page. The anti-smoking Facebook page 9

teaches how to counter-argue. The other Facebook pages (Bruna, H&M and Donald Duck) are not designed to teach how to counter-argue. These Facebook pages are shown to all of the students in the control group, and to the students who are not inoculated in the experimental group. It is expected that the anti-smoking Facebook page, as compared to the other noninoculation Facebook pages, produces more counter-arguments after the attack.

H1b: For the anti-smoking Facebook page group, the number of counter-arguments after the attack is higher, than for the other Facebook pages groups.

The theory of planned behaviour suggests that for behaviour to be established, different factors play a role. The behavioural intention, which leads to the behaviour, is affected by attitude, the subjective norm and the perceived behavioural control. Therefore, for inoculation to be truly effective, these three factors should stay stable after an attack. If the inoculation is effective, the intention to smoke does not differ after the attack of peer pressure from the intention before inoculation. The same holds for attitude, the subjective norm and perceived behavioural control. It is expected that the effects of inoculation to spread. Therefore, the groups who have members amongst them who are inoculated (the experimental group) will have more resistance to peer pressure, compared to groups who have no members who are inoculated (the control group).

H2a: For the experimental group, behavioural intention does not change from before the inoculation to after the attack, whereas for the control group, behavioural intention increases.

H3a: For the experimental group, attitude does not change from before the inoculation to after the attack, whereas for the control group, attitude increases.

H4a: For the experimental group, subjective norm does not change from before the inoculation to after the attack, whereas for the control group, subjective norm increases.

H5a: For the experimental group, perceived behavioural control does not change from before the inoculation to after the attack, whereas for the control group, perceived behavioural control increases.

Overall, the experimental group should be more resistant to peer pressure, than the control group. This difference between the experimental group and the control group can be explained by the effects of the anti-smoking Facebook page. It is expected that adolescents who have been exposed to the anti-smoking Facebook page, as compared to all the other adolescents who received the non-inoculation Facebook pages, will have more resistance to peer pressure.

H2b: For the anti-smoking Facebook page group, behavioural intention does not change from before the inoculation to after the attack, whereas for the other Facebook pages groups, behavioural intention increases.

H3b: For the anti-smoking Facebook page group, attitude does not change from before the inoculation to after the attack, whereas for the other Facebook pages groups, attitude increases.

H4b: For the anti-smoking Facebook page group, subjective norm does not change from before the inoculation to after the attack, whereas for the other Facebook pages groups, subjective norm increases.

3. Methods 3.1. Subjects To obtain the data, an experiment was conducted at a secondary school in the Netherlands. In this experiment, children in the first two classes of secondary school (aged 11-14) have been subjected to research, because this age group has the smallest number of children who smoke (0-15%). After this age, smoking increases to 42%. This means that for the age group 11-14 the chances are that they will start smoking within the short term. The school was recruited by sending first an informative e-mail, followed by a phone call. After the school gave their (written) permission to cooporate, they received an information letter for the parents of the students. The school then distributed these letters to the parents. In this letter the goal of the research and the procedure was explained. At the end of the information letter for parents, parents could indicate as to whether their child was not allowed to participate in the experiment. This is known as passive consent. All materials used for correspondence can be found in Appendix A. In total, 499 pupils from 1 school, and 22 classes filled out the surveys for at least one of the time points. After the construction of the scales, respondents with missing values were deleted list-wise. This left 366 respondents in the sample, which means that 73% of the respondents had valid scores on all the variables on all three time points. Response set occurred mostly at time point 2, which makes the scores less valid (Cronbach, 1946). Response set is “any tendency causing a person consistently to give different responses to test items than he would when the same content is presented in a different form” Cronbach, 1946). For example, the attitude towards smoking was measured with 10 items. For some items a lower score meant a negative attitude, whereas for some items a higher score meant a negative attitude. When for all items the same score was given, this means that the person did not answer consistently with their attitude. Response set was defined as having a standard deviation of 0 on all items for one construct (i.e. for the 10 items on attitude). When a respondent had response set for one of the variables attitude, social norm, or resistance to peer influence, the respondent was deleted from the sample. In total 28 respondents were deleted, because of response set. The final sample used for the analyses consisted of 338 respondents (68%). Moreover, a pre-test was done with a small group of respondents to check whether the experimental materials were effective. A total of 54 respondents participated in this pre-test. 12

3.2. Design and procedure To test the hypotheses, a mixed repeated measures design will be used. Specifically, the design involved a pre-test/post-test control group design. An overview of the design is shown in table 1. The experimental group consist of groups where 20% of the children are inoculated. The control group consists of classrooms, where none of the children are inoculated. The experiment is randomized at the classroom level (group-randomized). The between-group design of the experiment is the comparison between the experimental group and the control group. The within group design is designed following earlier research concerning inoculation and smoking behaviour (McGuire, 1964; Compton & Pfau, 2004; Pfau et al., 1992; Ivanov et al., 2012). The pre-test was done before the inoculation message. The post-test took place after the attack. Table 1 shows an outline of the design.

Normally in inoculation research, all the students in the experimental group receive the inoculation. When looking at diffusion of innovations there are 5 categories in which adaptors can be put. The first two categories are the innovators and the early adopters. These two groups form 16% of all people. The following categories are the majority and the laggards, in other words: the ones who follow. This suggests that after 16% an idea is over its tipping point and diffusion takes place (Rogers, 1995). It is chosen to select the top 20% as peer influencers and give them the inoculation treatment. When a peer influencer is not present at the moment of treatment, it is still likely that at least 16% of the group will receive the inoculation. The inoculation is constructed as a Facebook page. By giving only a small part of the group the inoculation treatment (anti-smoking Facebook page), the effects of spreading the inoculation can be explored. When the spreading of the inoculation is successful, the experimental group will have more resistance to peer influence than the control group.

To check whether this diffusion is due to the inoculation, differences between Facebook pages will be explored. The inoculation message is constructed as an anti-smoking Facebook page. The peer influencers receive the treatment of inoculation, others in the experimental group and the respondents in the control group receive non-relevant messages (also constructed as Facebook pages). When comparing the different Facebook pages, the effectiveness of the inoculation can be explored. Table 2 shows the outline of the different groups.

3.2.1 Pre-test A pre-test is done at time point 0 and time point 1. The goal of the measurement on T0 is to determine who the opinion leaders of the classes are. This is done by nomination by classmates (Kiuru et al., 2010). This is done in the following way: each student receives several questions, in which they can nominate their class mates. In these questions, it is asked who their friends are, to whom they ask for advice and who do they consider as a leader in their class. When a student is named in a survey, he or she receives one nomination behind their name. If a student is mentioned more than once in the same survey of one person, this counts as only one nomination. All nominations of all the students are totalled in a tally score. This is used to determine who the opinion leaders of each class are (Starkey, Audrey, Holliday, Moore and Campbell, 2009). Also some demographic information is obtained. The opinion leaders will receive the inoculation message at time point 1. On T1, the students are surveyed on their behavioural intention, attitude towards smoking, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control. Moreover, the behaviour and perceived peer pressure is measured. Also demographic information of each student is obtained (Pfau et al., 1992). These variables are in the analyses used as a baseline.

3.2.2. Treatment After the pre-test at time point 1, the treatment will take place in the experimental group. This treatment consists of an inoculation message, that is received only by the peer influencers. This means that only the opinion leaders (20%) will receive the inoculation. Other students (the non opinion leaders) in the experimental group receive an irrelevant message that will not inoculate them. The students in the control group receive also an irrelevant message that will not inoculate them. Table 2 shows an overview of the different groups. Directly after this treatment, resistance to peer influence is measured. This measure is used for the manipulation check. This is done to check whether receivers of the inoculation have more resistance to peer influence than the receivers of the irrelevant messages. Table 1 shows the process of the experiment.

3.2.3. Post-test At time point 2, the persuasive attack takes place for all students. After this, the post-test will take place. In this post-test, the same measurements will be done as in the pre-test (T1). Also, the number of counter-arguments are measured, to see whether more arguments were thought of in the experimental group than the control group. The amount of time between the time of inoculation and the time of attack (T1 and T2) could be of great influence on the effectiveness of the inoculation. The time between the inoculation and the attack differs over previous studies. Meta-analyses of these studies have shown that when the time delay exceeded 13 days, the effect of inoculation no longer existed (Banas & Rains, 2010). Therefore, and because of practical reasons, in the experiment the time between T1 and T2 was set at 7 days. In the time between T0 and the T1, the opinion leaders have to be determined. For practical reasons, the time between those two measurements will also be 7 days. After the moment of the post-test (at T2) all participants of the research received a debriefing. In this debriefing the goal of the study was explained and students were reminded that the counter-arguments they had written down at the post-test, can be used later on when peers are trying to convince them to start smoking. Moreover, the adolescents were reminded of the health consequences of smoking.

3.3. Experimental Materials The experimental materials are included in the surveys. There are two kinds of experimental materials. First is the inoculation message, which takes form in an anti-smoking Facebook 15

page. For the not inoculated respondents irrelevant messages are used, which also take form of Facebook pages. The second experimental material is the attack, which takes the form of a hypothetical dilemma. This is a text, designed to evoke perceived peer pressure by the respondents. Moreover, for the attack a persuasive image is used.

3.3.1. Inoculation message An inoculation campaign was designed to increase the resistance to peer pressure to start smoking. The inoculation message in this research is constructed as an anti-smoking Facebook page. The two main elements of inoculation are present in the campaign. The threat component consists of a warning, that in the near future, their peers will try and convince them to try smoking. Although the students may think that they will not smoke, some of them will change their mind. The refutional preemption component consists of arguments that could be raised and how the adolescents can refuse them. Three of the arguments are based on Pfau et al. (1992) and Pfau and Bockern (1994): smoking is socially cool, experimental smoking won‟t result in regular smoking, and smoking won‟t affect me. Moreover, based on the effectiveness measures by Farrelly, Healton, Davis, Messeri, Hersey, and Haviland (2002), one argument for smoking is incorporated: “Smoking makes people your age look cool or fit in”. Also, one argument for not smoking is incorporated: “Not smoking is a way to express independence”. The design of inoculation messages is setup in such a way, that it will stimulate wordof-mouth communication about the campaign (Compton & Pfau, 2009). The Facebook page is designed taking in mind the successful “Truth” campaign (Allen et al., 2009). The antismoking Facebook page campaign, together with the surveys can be found in Appendix B.

To check whether the inoculation message by means of a Facebook page campaign is effective in increasing resistance to peer pressure a pre-test was conducted. A sample of 54 respondents (who did not participate in the main research) were researched on resistance to 16

peer pressure over different Facebook pages. It was expected that the anti-smoking Facebook page was able to create more resistance to peer pressure than the other Facebook page (H&M). The operationalization of resistance to peer pressure can be found in chapter 4. The reliability for the measure in the pre-test on time point 0 is acceptable (Cronbach‟s alpha=0.72). Descriptions of the dependent measures of the pre-test are presented in table3. Using Shapiro-Wilk test, assumptions for normally distributed scores for all the dependent variables were not met (p<0.05). Performing a log transformation or a reciprocal transformation on the dependent variables did not correct the distribution enough to make them normally distributed. Therefore, the original scores on the dependent variables were used, keeping in mind that they are not normally distributed. One-way ANOVA analysis was used, to see whether there were different levels of resistance to peer influence for the anti-smoking Facebook page compared to the H&M Facebook page. There was no significant difference found between the Facebook pages, F(1,37)=0.54, p=0.47. This means that the anti-smoking Facebook page was not able to increase the resistance to peer pressure. It cannot be concluded that the anti- smoking Facebook page was not effective. This is, because the measurement used for the manipulation check is about resistance to peer influence in general. The anti-smoking Facebook page is however designed to increase resistance to peer influence to start smoking specifically. Because there is no proper measurement of resistance to peer influence to start smoking, the general measurement for resistance to peer influence is used. The results of the manipulation check do therefore not mean that the manipulation has failed. Because no better manipulation check was available, the research is continued with the anti-smoking Facebook page as it was.

3.3.2. Attack To check whether the inoculation is effective, an attack will take place on the existing behavioural intention, attitudes, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control of the students. Therefore, peer pressure to start smoking is simulated by means of a hypothetical dilemma. This method was first used by Bronfenbrenner (1970) and is used thereafter in different studies regarding susceptibility to peer pressure (e.g. Berndt, 1979; Steinberg, 1987). To make the attack of peer pressure more realistic, students are first asked to name three friends and to answer some other situational questions, to imagine the setting. After the hypothetical dilemma, two statements were given on which the students could answer on a 7-point scale from “totally disagree” to “totally agree”. The two statements 17

are: “I refuse to go along with my friends”, and “I go along with my friends”. The attack on the beliefs of the adolescents was formulated as follows.

You and your friends are walking outside, and you are talking. After a while one of them lights a cigarette and offers you one as well. Your other two friends accept the cigarette and say to you: “You’ll smoke with us, won’t you? Trying one won’t hurt”.

The attack scenario was designed to raise the behavioural intention, attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control, by means of creating peer pressure. To check whether the attack was successful a pre-test was done with 54 respondents, who did not participate in the main research. This pre-test was done at T0 and descriptives can be found in table 3. Respondents who received the attack should experience more peer pressure to smoke and have higher scores on behavioural intention, attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control, compared to respondents who did not receive the attack. A total of 27 respondents were assigned to the experimental condition and received the attack. A control condition of 27 respondents did not receive the attack. To check whether the attack was effective, an independent sample t-test was used. The pre-test checking the attack manipulation showed that respondents who saw the attack message did not have significant higher scores on behavioural intention (M=1.77, p=0.48), attitude (M=2.20, p=0.50), subjective norm (M=1.31, p=0.15), and perceived behavioural control (M=4.38, p=0.18) than respondents who did not saw the attack message (behavioural intention, M=1.74; attitude, M=2.19; subjective norm, M=1.52; perceived behavioural control, M=3.86). This is contrary to the expectation. The attack did thus not obtain the goal of raising the behavioural intention, attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control. In the pre-test perceived peer pressure was obtained by the question: “I feel peer pressure to…”, which could be answered on a 7-point semantic differential scale from (1) “to not smoke” to (7) “to smoke”. Following respondents had to answer the question “how much pressure do you feel?”, which could be answered on a 7-point scale from (1) “very little pressure” to (7) “very much pressure”. The respondents who received the attack felt significantly more peer pressure to smoke F(2,52)=5.014, p=0.01 and experienced more peer pressure F(2,52)=11.65, p=0.00. The attack message was thus successful in simulating peer pressure, which was the goal of the attack scenario.

The goal of the pre-test was to check whether the attack message was effective. The attack message was only effective in simulating peer pressure. The attack message was not effective in making the aspects of the theory of planned behaviour higher. Because the attack was partly not effective, a visual persuasive element was added to the attack which was used in the main study. Another goal of the pre-test was to improve the questionnaires. Students were asked what could be better in the questionnaires. For the attack message, students were asked how better and more truthful answers could be obtained. A lot of the respondents suggested to omit the part where it was told that the question was shared with their 3 best friends. Reasons were it was not believable because anonymity was guaranteed, others said that if it was shared that the answers would not be honest. Therefore this part of the question was removed from the surveys used for the main research. The attack used for the pre-test and the main study can be found in Appendix B.

3.4. Variables Opinion leaders. Opinion leaders were selected based on their nomination by all fellow students, also called the "whole community" or "sociometric" approach (Rogers, 1995; Starkey et al., 2009; Valente, & Pumpuang, 2009). Students were asked to write the names of their friends in their class (as many as they wanted), the people they wanted to be like in the class (a maximum of 5), who they looked up to (a maximum of 5), who they respected (a maximum 5), who were good leaders (a maximum of 5), and who they would have gone to for advice ( a maximum of 5). Tally scores were calculated by giving a student 1 score for every nominations list they were named. When students were named multiple times in the same nominations list, this still counted as 1 score (Starkey et al., 2009). Opinion leaders were selected by taking the top 20% of tally scores in a class. In some classrooms, the 20% of the respondents could be identified exactly. However, in most classrooms this was not the case. Here, the respondents with the lowest score of the top 20% contained more than 20% of the total group. For example: in a class of 30 children, 20% would be 6 children. When the top ten scores are 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 10, 10, 9, 9, all respondents with a tally score of 10 would be inoculated, because a clear separation is not possible in this case. In this case, 8 out of the 30 received an inoculation, which is 27% of the group.

3.4.1. Independent Variables Condition. There are two conditions in this experiment: the experimental and the control condition. The experimental condition consists of students who are in classes where 20% of the students received the inoculation. The control condition consists of students who are in classes where none of the students received the inoculation. Facebook page. The inoculation message is constructed as an anti-smoking Facebook page. For the experimental classes, 20% received this anti-smoking Facebook page. Others students in the same class and students in the control condition, received irrelevant Facebook pages. These pages were about Bruna (a Dutch bookstore), H&M (a clothing store), and Donald Duck (a comic book). The anti-smoking Facebook page was coded 1, the Bruna Facebook page 2, the H&M Facebook page 3 and the Donald Duck Facebook page 4. The distribution of respondents over the different Facebook pages can be found in table 4.

3.4.2. Dependent Variables All descriptives of the variables used in the analyses can be found in Table 5. Behavioural intention to smoke. This dependent variable was measured by 3 questions. “Are you planning to smoke?”, “Are you planning to smoke next month?” and “Are you planning to smoke next year?”. Answers could be given on a 7-point scale ranging from “totally disagree” to “totally agree” (Francis et al., 2004). For both time point 1 and time point 2, the scales were reliable. Cronbach‟s alphas for both time points was 0.93. The scale was constructed by taking the mean score of the 3 items. Attitude towards smoking. Attitude towards smoking was measured as done by Pfau et al. (1992) and Francis et al. (2004). In total, 10 items were given on a 7-point semantic 20

differential scale. Participants were asked to rate smoking on the following items: okay/not okay, acceptable/not acceptable, positive/negative, wrong/right, stupid/smart, good/bad, healthy/unhealthy, not nice/nice, enjoyable/not enjoyable, and sensible/not sensible (Francis et al., 2004). According to factor analysis, the ten items together formed a one-dimensional scale at time point 1 (N=338, KMO=0.90, variance explained=53.32%) and was reliable (Cronbach‟s alpha=0.89). Also, the ten items at time point 2 formed a one-dimensional scale (N=338, KMO=0.90, variance explained=59.94%) and is reliable (Cronbach‟s alpha = 0.92). The scale was calculated by taking the mean score on all items, when at least 4 items were answered. If less than 4 items had an answer, the variable was coded as missing. Subjective norm. The subjective norm was measured using 4 items (Francis et al., 2004). The first was answered on a 7-point semantic differential scale: “Most people who are important to me think that”, (1) “I should smoke” to (7) “I should not smoke”. The other three items, “It is expected of me that I smoke”, “I feel pressured to smoke”, and “My friends want me to smoke” were answered on a 7-point scale ranging from (1) totally disagree to (7) totally agree. The four items form a one-dimensional scale (N=338, KMO=0.73, explained variance=53.71%) and are reliable (Cronbach‟s alpha=0.71) for time point 1. For time point 2, according to factor analysis there was also a one-dimensional scale (N=338, KMO=0.76, explained variance=60.83%) and reliable (Cronbach‟s alpha=0.77). The scale was calculated as the mean score, if at least 2 items were answered. If less than 2 items were answered, the variable was coded as missing. Perceived behavioural control. Perceived behavioural control over smoking is accessed by asking 5 questions which could be answered on a 7-point scale ranging from (1) totally disagree to (7) totally agree (Francis et al., 2004). The items were “If I want to smoke, it is possible for me to do so”, “If I want to smoke, it is easy for me to get cigarettes”, “I have no control over my decision to smoke or not”, “The decision to smoke is entirely mine”, and “If I want to smoke, it is easy for me to find a place where I can do so”. The third and the fourth item were deleted from the scale, because these items lowered the reliability. The 3 items left formed a reliable scale (Cronbach‟s alpha=0.78) for time point 1, and for time point 2 as well (Cronbach‟s alpha=0.86). The variable was calculated by computing the mean score on the 3 items, when at least 2 items had a valid answer. The variable holds that a higher score on perceived behavioural control means that respondents think that it is possible to smoke, it is easy to get cigarettes, and it is easy to find a place to smoke. Number of counter-arguments. This variable is measured by using the thought-listing technique, which is widely used in inoculation research (e.g. Parker, Ivanov and Compton, 21

2012; Pfau et al., 2009). Respondents were asked to write down as many as possible arguments against smoking. The number of counter-arguments given is the score on the variable. Resistance to peer influence. This dependent variable for the manipulation check is measured as done by Steinberg and Monaham (2007), with use of the translation of Sumter, Bockhorst, Steinberg and Westenberg (2009). There are 10 items which described two groups of people. First, students had to choose whether they belonged to the left or the right group. After choosing a side, they had to decide whether this was completely true, or slightly true for them. This resulted in a 4-point scale. For example, the first item showed two possible groups of people. The item was stated as follows: “Some people go along with their friends just to keep their friends happy” BUT “Other people refuse to go along with their friends want to do, even though they know it will make their friends unhappy”. First a choice had to be made to which group the respondent belonged. Following, they had to mark whether that was “completely true” or “slightly true” for them. All items for resistance to peer influence can be found in Appendix B. Factor analysis suggested that items 1 and 8 had to be deleted because their communalities were below 0.40. The other items formed a one-dimensional scale (N=338, KMO=0.75, variance explained = 30.18%) and the reliability was acceptable (Cronbach‟s alpha=0.66). The mean is calculated when at least 3 valid answers were given on the 8 items, otherwise it was coded as missing.

3.4.3. Control Variables Demographics. The demographics considered in this research are sex, age and educational level. All these variables are measured at all three time points. Sex is measured by a dummy variable where 0 is a boy and 1 a girl. Age is calculated by asking the respondents for their date of birth. The educational system in the Netherlands for secondary education constitutes different levels, from lowest to highest: VMBO (1), HAVO (2), and VWO (3). Behaviour. The behaviour of smoking was measured at time point 1 and time point 2, by two items, as used by Huisman, Werfhorst, and Monshouwer (2012). The first question was about the frequency: “How often do you smoke?”. Answers could be given in 5 categories: “I have never smoked”, “I have smoked once or twice”, “I smoke, but not daily”, “I used to smoke, but have stopped”, “I smoke daily”. Following Huisman et al. (2012) the items “I smoke, but not daily” and “I used to smoke, but have stopped” are merged into one item, which results in an ordinal scale with 4 items. The second question was to obtain the quantity. The question was formulated as: “on a day you smoke, how many (self-rolled) 22

cigarettes do you smoke?”. The following answers could be given: “I never smoke”, “Less than 1 cigarette”, “1 to 20 cigarettes”, and “20 or more”. To get a frequency-quantity measure, the two items were multiplied into an ordinal scale (the higher the score, the higher the frequency-quantity).

3.5. Manipulation check At time-point 1 a manipulation check was done in the same way as it was done in the pre-test at time-point 0. With the sample of 338 respondents it was tested whether the anti-smoking Facebook page was able to create more resistance to peer pressure than the other Facebook pages (H&M, Donald Duck, and Bruna). The results of this manipulation check are presented in chapter 4.

3.6. Statistical Analysis Independent sample t-tests are used to test hypotheses 1a and 1b, which compares the number of counter-arguments between the experimental group and the control group. Mixed design multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) are used to test hypotheses 2 to 5. The hypotheses expected different within effects over time between the experimental and the control group: a within-between interaction is expected between groups and time. Moreover, different effects between the different Facebook pages will be explored. This will be done by means of a separate MANOVA. The anti-smoking Facebook page is 23

compared with all other Facebook pages, both in the experimental group and the control group. Here also, a within-between interaction is expected between Facebook page and time. The dependent variables are behavioural intention, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control.

4. Results In this section the results of the analyses will be discussed. First the manipulation check will be discussed, where after the different multivariate analyses of variance will be examined.

4.1. Manipulation check The manipulation check for resistance to peer influence at T1 in the main study showed that there was no significant difference between Facebook groups. One-way ANOVA analysis was used to test this, F(3,334)=0.04, p=0.99. This means that students who saw the anti-smoking Facebook, did not have a significant other mean score on resistance to peer influence than the other Facebook pages. It cannot be concluded that the anti-Facebook page was not effective, for the same reasons as in the pre-test: the anti-smoking Facebook page is designed to increase resistance to peer influence to start smoking, but the measurement was about resistance to peer influence in general.

4.2. Comparing means To test hypothesis 1a, which stated that more counter-arguments would be produced by people in the experimental group, and hypothesis 1b, which stated that more counter-arguments would be produced by people who saw the anti-smoking Facebook page compared to the other Facebook pages, independent sample t-tests were conducted. Hypothesis 1a has to be rejected, because there is no significant (p=0.35) difference between the experimental group (M=2.69) and the control group (M=2.62). The different Facebook groups were also compared. The anti-smoking Facebook page (only present in the experimental condition) was compared to all the other Facebook pages (present in both the experimental condition and the control condition). Also for the different Facebook groups no significant (p=0.49) differences were found between the anti-smoking Facebook page (M=2.73), the Bruna Facebook page (M=2.64), the H&M Facebook page (M=2.61), and the Donald Duck Facebook page (M=2.68). This means hypothesis 1b has to 24

be rejected as well. The anti-smoking Facebook page was not effective in stimulating more counter-arguments than the other Facebook pages.

4.3. Mixed design multivariate analysis of variance Using Shapiro-Wilk test, assumptions for normally distributed scores for all the dependent variables were not met (p<0.05). Performing a log transformation or a reciprocal transformation on the dependent variables did not correct the distribution enough to make them normally distributed. Therefore the original scores on the dependent variables were used, keeping in mind that they are not normally distributed. Using Levene‟s test of homogeneity of variance, all the dependent variables have equal variances (p>0.05) over conditions. Almost all variables have equal variances over the different Facebook pages, except for the variables behavioural intention on time point 1, F(3,334)=6.10, p=0.00, and attitude on time point 2, F(3,334)=2.78, p=0.04. Correlations ranged between 0.20 and 0.78, which is acceptable (Brace et al., in Mayers, 2013, p. 323). Because there is no possibility to do a non-parametric MANOVA analysis, a mixed repeated MANOVA is conducted.

4.3.1. Analyses for condition Box‟s M test for equality of variance-covariance matrices, p=0.002, which is smaller than 0.05 so there is inequality of variance-covariance. Table 6 shows the results for the repeated measures mixed ANOVA. Scores on intention, attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control were obtained at time point 1 and time point 2: before and after the treatment of inoculation. Repeated-measures MANOVA analyses showed that there were no significant multivariate effects for condition, λ=1.00, F(4,328)=0.16, p=0.48, controlled for behaviour on time 1 and time 2, educational level, sex, and age. This means that there is no significant direct effect of condition on the dependent variables combined. There was a significant multivariate effect for time point, λ=0.97, F(4,328)=2.30, p=0.03, but no significant multivariate effect across the interaction between condition and time point, λ=1.00, F(4,328)=0.18, p= 0.48. This indicates that there is no difference in effects of time over the different conditions. When looking at the univariate tests, there is a significant increase in subjective norm, F(1,331)=3.28, p=0.04, and perceived behavioural control, F(1,331)=7.68, p=0.01, from time point 1 to time point 2. There was however no significant interaction between time point and 25

condition for intention, F(1,331)=0.60, p=0.22, attitude, F(1,331)=0.06, p=0.40, subjective norm, F(1,331)=0.00, p=0.49, and perceived behavioural control, F(1,331)=0.08, p=0.39. This suggests that the increase in behavioural intention and perceived behavioural control was not due to the condition. Hypotheses 2a, 3a, 4a and 5a expected different changes in intention, attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control for the experimental group and the control group. Based on the results these hypotheses have to be rejected.

4.3.2. Analyses for Facebook pages Box‟s M test for equality of variance-covariance matrices, p=0.00, which is smaller than 0.05 so there is inequality of variance-covariance. Table 7 shows the results for the repeated measures mixed ANOVA. Differences between the inoculation message (anti-smoking Facebook page), and the irrelevant messages (the Bruna, Donald Duck and H&M Facebook pages, for the whole sample) are explored. Scores on intention, attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control were obtained at time point 1 and time point 2: before and after the treatment. Repeated-measures MANOVA analyses showed that there were no significant multivariate effects for Facebook page, λ=0.95, F(4,326)=1.28, p=0.11, controlled for behaviour on time 1 and time 2, educational level, sex, and age. There was a significant multivariate effect for time point, λ=0.97, F(4,326)=2.39, p=0.03, and a significant multivariate effect across the interaction between Facebook page and time point, λ=0.92, F(4,326)=2.38, p=0.03. The significant multivariate effect for time-point can be explained by the univariate tests. These show there is a significant increase in subjective norm, F(3,329)=3.41, p=0.03, and perceived behavioural control, F(1,329)=6.01, p=0.01, from time point 1 to time point 2. Behavioural intention and attitude showed no significant change over time (p>0.05). The significant multivariate effect across the interaction between Facebook page and time-point was also further explored with univariate tests. For behavioural intention a significant interaction between time-point and Facebook page was found, F(3,329)=2.26, p=0.04. This means that different effects over time are found for Facebook page on behavioural intention. A paired sample t-test showed that for the antismoking Facebook, the mean score on intention increased from time 1 (M=1.67) to time 2 (M=1.99), p=0.03. Also the H&M Facebook page shows a significant (p=0.03) increase from time 1 (M=1.35) to time 2 (M=1.50). The Donald Duck Facebook page shows also a significant (p=0.00) increase from time 1 (M=1.23) to time 2 (M=1.50). Only the Bruna Facebook page shows no significant change from time 1 to time 2. Hypothesis 2b expected no 26

difference over time in behavioural intention for the anti-smoking Facebook page, as compared to an increase of behavioural intention for the other Facebook pages. Considering the results, this hypothesis has to be rejected.

There is also a significant interaction between time-point and Facebook page for attitude, F(3,329)=3.03, p=0.02. This indicates that there are different effects over time for behavioural intention and attitude for the different Facebook pages. For attitude, a paired sample t-test showed that for the H&M Facebook page there was a significant (p=0.01) decrease from time 1 (M=1.83) to time 2 (M=1.67). The Donald Duck Facebook page however showed a significant (p=0.04) increase in attitude from time 1 (M=1.75) to time 2 (M=1.87). The anti27

smoking Facebook page and the Bruna Facebook page showed no significant changes over time. Hypothesis 3b expected no difference over time in attitude for the anti-smoking Facebook page, as compared to an increase of attitude for the other Facebook pages. This hypothesis has to be rejected. Moreover, a significant interaction between time-point and Facebook page was found for perceived behavioural control, F(3,329)=2.70, p=0.02. The increase in perceived behavioural control over time can thus be explained by the interaction with Facebook page. For perceived behavioural control, a paired sample t-test showed that for the anti-smoking Facebook the mean score increased significantly (p=0.000) from time 1 (M=3.92) to time 2 (M=4.75). For the H&M Facebook a significant (p=0.000) difference was found between time 1 (M=3.51) and time 2 (M=4.11). The Bruna Facebook page and the Donald Duck Facebook page show no significant changes over time. Hypothesis 5b has to be rejected, because this hypothesised no change in perceived behavioural control for the anti-smoking Facebook page, as compared to an increase in perceived behavioural control for the other Facebook pages. No significant interaction was found between time point and Facebook page for subjective norm, F(3,329)=0.32, p=0.41. The increase over time for subjective norm can thus not be explained by the interaction with Facebook page. This rejects hypothesis 4b, which expected different effects over time for different Facebook pages.

5. Conclusion and discussion The main question this research addressed was whether the effects of inoculation can spread. This means that when a small target group is inoculated, does the rest of the group benefit from its effects. It was expected that due to inoculation and the spreading of its effects, classrooms in which students were inoculated could counter-argue better, than classrooms where none of the students were inoculated. This thesis was the first to research the spreading of the effects of inoculation. This was done by inoculating only part of a classroom and then to find out whether there was an effect on the whole classroom. Moreover, the present research was the first to incorporate the theory of planned behaviour in inoculation research. Previous research mostly focused on the attitude towards behaviour (i.e. Compton & Pfau, 2004; Pfau et al.1992; Godbold & Pfau, 2000; An& Pfau, 2004). However, the theory of planned behaviour holds that attitude is not the only factor influencing the behaviour. The theory of planned behaviour suggests that the attitude, the subjective norm and the perceived behavioural control are determinants of the behavioural intention and thereby behaviour. The results showed that in the classrooms where a part of the students were inoculated, did not produce more counter-arguments, than classrooms where none of the students were inoculated. This can be explained by the fact that there was no effect of the anti-smoking Facebook campaign on counter-arguing. Because there was no effect of the anti-smoking Facebook page, this effect could not have been spread. In other words, the inoculation was not effective and therefore no spreading of the effects was possible. This ineffective Facebook campaign could therefore be a reason that there is no difference in the number of counterarguments between the experimental group and the control group. The results on the four aspects of the theory of planned behaviour show that the inoculation was not successful in maintaining the behavioural intention, attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioural control, for the classrooms where inoculation took place. The goal of the spreading of inoculation is that in the classrooms where some of the children received the inoculation, there is no change in attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioural control and behavioural intention over time. It was expected that the experimental group and the control group showed different changes in these aspects. However, the results showed no differences between the experimental group and the control group over time.

The reason why there was no difference between the experimental and the control group could be that the anti-smoking Facebook page was not effective as an inoculation message. The anti-smoking Facebook page was, as compared to the other Facebook pages, not able to maintain the behavioural intention, attitude, subjective norm and behavioural intention after the attack. The different Facebook pages show different changes over time on the aspects of the theory of planned behaviour. It can be concluded that there is no clear pattern which can explain the different results for the different Facebook pages. Further research should focus on why de different Facebook pages give different results. Overall, the results showed that perceived behavioural control and the attitude increased over time. This cannot be explained by the different Facebook pages. The increase in perceived behavioural control and attitude is the opposite of what was expected, namely that the perceived behavioural control and attitude would be maintained. This increase could be due to the expectation that the older adolescents have higher percentage smokers amongst them. Less likely, this could be due to the attack message. Because the pre-test showed no significant effect of the attack message, it is not expected that the attack message was the cause of a higher subjective norm and perceived behavioural control. There are different explanations possible for the anti-smoking Facebook page not being an effective inoculation. The first explanation is that psychological reactance could have occurred. Reactance theory holds that people tend to be defensive, when they feel that they are persuaded. When a person is persuaded, they feel that their freedom is taken away from them. Because people do not want this, there is a tendency to react negatively to persuasion (Gass & Seiter, 2011). The anti-smoking Facebook page is advocating to students that they should not start smoking. This is a limitation of the freedom of the students. Therefore, the reaction of the students to this inoculation could be negative. Grandpre, Alvaro, Burgoon, Miller and Hall (2003) have done research on psychological reactance on smoking campaigns. They found that reactance is more prevalent in higher grade levels. In these higher grade levels (with students of 15-16 years of age), implicit messages worked better than explicit messages. Implicit messages led to lower behavioural intentions to smoke. The messages used in the anti-smoking Facebook campaign, were of an explicit nature. Although the age groups in the present study and the study of Grandpre et al. (2003) were not the same, psychological reactance because of the explicit message could explain why there was a negative effect of the inoculation. Moreover, reactance could have occurred, because of the burden of the questionnaires. The students could have been irritated by the amount of time and cognitive effort that was required to fill out the questionnaires. This research consisted of three questionnaires, which 31

students had to fill out at three different points in time, with only a week between each timepoint. Some students showed this irritation, by giving the same answers on multiple items. This phenomenon is called response set (Cronbach, 1946). The results of these students have been deleted. Response set is one way to see irritation in the answers. Other students may have also not given reliable answers that may not have been obvious in the data. Because of the findings on the observations, the reliability of the data is at stake, which could explain why the results are not in line with the expectations. The second explanation is that the design of the inoculation is different from previous research. For example, some used video materials for inoculation (i.e. Pfau et al., 1992; Godbold & Pfau, 2000), whereas others used written texts (i.e. Compton & Pfau, 2004; An & Pfau, 2004). There is no research on inoculation that used a Facebook page for the inoculation. That is why it was interesting to see whether this could have any effect. It could have been that the inoculation, designed as a Facebook page, was not effective. The texts used in previous inoculation research were longer than the texts used in the anti-smoking Facebook page. Therefore it could be, that the messages were not long enough to learn how to counterargue. This is an interesting point with respect to further research. It is interesting to see whether the results would change, if different types of Facebook campaigns are used and the length of the texts is varied.

5.1. Limitations and further research As a limitation, the data used for the analyses was not totally suitable. The research only incorporated one school in the dataset. This does not make it possible to tell whether the patterns found are for this school specific or whether the patterns are general, meaning that these patterns can be found at other schools as well. Moreover, statistical assumptions were violated. The variables were not evenly distributed. Even with the use of transformations on the variables, the distribution was not normal. Also the assumption of equal variances was violated. The sample of only one school and the violations of assumptions make the results less reliable. Therefore, it is not possible to generalize the results. However, because the approach of research in the field of inoculation had not been before, it is still considered a contribution to the existing literature on inoculation. Because of the innovativeness of the research, the limitations were a risk worth taking. It is interesting to see whether more research on inoculation, combined with the theory of planned behaviour, will generate the same statistical results with respect to the statistical assumptions at different schools as well.

Further research on the topic of the spreading of the effects of inoculation should take into account that firstly, the inoculation message should be tested on its effectiveness. To measure the effectiveness of the inoculation message, this research measured the resistance to peer influence directly after the inoculation message. The Cronbach‟s alpha (0.66) of the scale is questionable and the results should therefore be interpreted with care. The resistance to peer influence scale (Sumter et al, 2009) is designed to measure general susceptibility to peer pressure. The inoculation message is however designed to induce susceptibility to peer pressure to start smoking specifically. Therefore, the pre-test to check whether the antismoking Facebook page was effective was not the right way to test it. The effectiveness of the message can be improved by making the message more implicit. Adolescents like to be able to make up their own mind, instead of being imposed on the desired behaviour. If the message is more implicit, it is more likely that no resistance will occur (Grandpre et al., 2003). When a pre-test proves that the inoculation message is efficient and the results can be generalized, the spreading of the effects of the inoculation can be researched after this confirmation. Moreover, this research is the first to use simulated peer pressure as an attack. Previous research used persuasive texts (i.e. Compton & Pfau, 2004) and persuasive video‟s (i.e. An, & Pfau, 2004) as attack message. Even the study of Godbold and Pfau (2000) titled “conferring resistance to peer pressure among adolescents using inoculation theory to discourage alcohol use” did not use peer pressure as an attack. Therefore this research contributes to the existing literature, by using a different kind of attack than other inoculation research. The pre-test of the simulated peer pressure showed that the perceived peer pressure was higher. It could be interesting to further investigate simulated peer pressure as an attack in inoculation research. Compton and Pfau (2009) suggest that the spreading of the effects of inoculation will be by means of discussion. They concluded that their inoculation message stimulated talking about it. However, the effects of the talk are not discussed in the research of Compton and Pfau (2009). The present study did not take the talking about the subject into account and only looked at whether a spreading of the effect was present. However, the measurement of talk makes it possible to give an explanation. Talk is a necessary condition for the message to spread. Therefore, future research should take the amount of talk into account. This way, the spreading of the inoculation can be explained and mapped.

5.2. Implications This research contributed to the existing literature in incorporating the theory of planned behaviour into inoculation research. In this research, the subjective norm and the perceived behavioural control were also taken into account. Together with attitude, these factors are predictors of behavioural intention, which in turn predicts the behaviour (Hartmann, 2009). Especially the subjective norm is interesting for research on adolescents. Adolescents are in a stage of their life, in which they influence each other in both positive and negative ways. Because of the importance of peers in this age, it is important that not only attitude is taken into account, but also the other aspects that lead to behavioural intention and thereby behaviour. By incorporating the subjective norm and other factors of the theory of planned behaviour, this research, provides more insight than only focussing on attitude, as previous studies have done. The implications of this research are that policy makers and especially those who are addressing health issues for adolescents should be aware of the possibilities of reactance. The health message should therefore not be lecturing, but should take into account that adolescents want to be able to make up their own mind (Grandpre et al., 2003). This concerns not only inoculation, but all kinds of health promotion campaigns. Not only policy makers should take psychological reactance into account. Also researchers should consider the possibility of irritation when asking too many questions. If respondents are surveyed too many times or when the survey is about socially (un)acceptable topics, the danger of reactance is present. It is possible to limit the amount of questions and questionnaires and try to ask questions in such a way, it is not perceived as lecturing. Finally, a Facebook page has the ability to target a specific group of receivers. But before using it, further research is necessary. This research found that the anti-smoking Facebook page was not an effective inoculation. Research of Flynn et al. (1994) found that school intervention combined with mass media are more effective. Therefore, it can be considered to use Facebook besides other media and personal health promotions. In this way a maximal effect can be obtained by using health promotion campaigns.

Hoewel de afgelopen jaren het aantal rokende adolescenten is afgenomen, zijn er nog altijd kinderen die dit ongezonde gedrag vertonen. Gemiddeld 23% van de middelbare scholieren rookt. Dat kan schadelijke gevolgen hebben voor hun gezondheid. Diverse factoren bepalen de kans dat tieners gaan roken. Eén van de belangrijkste factoren is de invloed van vrienden. Met dit onderzoek willen wij te weten komen of het mogelijk is tieners weerbaarder te maken voor de druk van vrienden om te starten met roken. Het onderzoek Het onderzoek bestaat uit drie onderdelen: (1) het invullen van een vragenlijst met vragen over roken en vriendschappen; (2) deelname aan een weerbaarheidsprogramma. Dit programma heeft als doel tieners weerbaarder te maken tegen de invloed van vrienden om te gaan roken; (3) het invullen van een vragenlijst met vragen over roken en vriendschappen. Door bepaalde vragen over roken en vriendschappen nog een keer te stellen kunnen we vaststellen of het weerbaarheidsprogramma effectief is geweest. Wat we van de school vragen Het onderzoek is gericht op kinderen in klas 1 en 2 van de middelbare school. Voordat het onderzoek van start gaat zullen de ouders een brief met informatie over het onderzoek ontvangen. Wij vragen de school om deze brieven onder ouders te verspreiden. Bij de brief zit een toestemmingsformulier die ouders in kunnen vullen en terugsturen als zij niet willen dat hun kind meedoet aan het onderzoek. Ouders hoeven het toestemmingsformulier niet in te vullen als hun kind mee mag doen. Tijdens het onderzoek kunnen wij gewoon gebruik maken van het leslokaal waar op dat moment de les plaatsvindt. Geen aanvullende materialen zijn nodig en de docent zal niet extra belast worden.
