The 44th Annual Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies will be held in New Orleans, LA, from Thursday, November 15, to Sunday, November 18, 2012 at the New Orleans Marriott. The theme of the convention is "Boundary, Barrier and Border Crossing". Our business meeting is scheduled for Friday, November 16, 2012 at 6.30 pm in the hotel’s Preservation Hall Studio 5. To complete the Board this slot must be filled for one year. The VP will automatically assume the post of president on January 2014. On January 2013, two positions on our Executive Committee will also become vacant, that of Julia Bock, Long Island U., and Edit Nagy, U. of Pécs/U. of Florida, Gainesville. (Steve Jobbitt’s (California State U.) and Katalin Fabian’s (Lafayette Coll.) term will expire December 2013.) To date two nominations have been received, for Alice Freifeld and Arpad von Klimo. I received the following request from Béla Várdy: Kedves Zsuzsi! Hálás lennék ha következö HSA Körleveledben lehoznád a következö kérelmet: Várdy Béla történészprofesszor új témába kezdett. Meg akarja irni az ú.n. “DP” (Dipi, Displaced Persons) emigrációnak a történetét. Ez az emigráció 1944-1945 fordulóján, a Horthy-rendszer (és a Szálasi rendszer) összeomlása, és Magyarországnak a szovjet csapatok által történt elfoglalása következtében hagyta el hazáját. Néhány évig különbözö németországi, ausztriai, olasz, stb.) menekülttáborokban laktak. 1949-1953 folyamán azonban nagyrészük különbözö európai (Anglia, Franciaország, Skandináv államok, stb.) és tengerentúli országba emigrált (USA, Kanada, Ausztrália, Dél-Amerika, stb.), ahol megtelepedett és ahol leélte életét. Az Egyesült Államokba föleg a két DP törvény (Displaced Persons Act, 1948, 1950; a McCarran-Walter Immigration and Naturalization Act, 1952; valamint a Refugee Relief Act, 1953) következtében emigrált, ahol kiépítette a második világháborút követö legnagyobb magyar tengerentúli közösséget. (Késöbb az ötvenhatosok jelentös része is hozzájuk csatlakozott.) Habár a dipik száma kb. 125,000 körül volt (USA-ba 26,000 vándorolt ki), ennek ellenére -- szemben az ötvenhatosokkal -- a velül kapcsolatos tudományos irodalom igen kevés és hiányos. Várdy professzor munkáját nagyon megkönnyitené ha azok, akiknek birokában van idevonatkozó forrásanyag (dokumentumok, levelek, kiadott vagy kiadatlan emlékiratok, egyesületi körlevelek, programok, stb.) elküldené az alanti cimek egyikére, akár eredetiben, akár másolatban, akár digitálizált formában a világhálón. 2

This collection of scholarly essays deals with Female Jewish intellectuals throughout Europe since 1860 until 2000. Topics range from women in music, to pioneers of Zionism, to others including a woman who was instrumental in the Russian Revolution. These women forever changed European culture and politics. The volume brings us one step closer to understanding how they gained influence considering the limited roles women played during that period in history. The essays collected in this volume show the complex lives and identities of Central European Jewish women, born between 1860 and the early 20th century. They enrich our knowledge and understanding of European Jewish women. Despite their important contributions to many intellectual and artistic fields, most of the women in this book were previously unknown to English-speaking audiences. These women exhibited a fluid range of identities, affiliations, and loyalties. Their Jewishness was more often identified with culture or community rather than ritual or religion. Most traveled around Europe and fled Europe during the time of the Nazi persecution. Their odysseys highlight the experiences of the marginal and those in exile. The collection offers a valuable contribution to 19th and 20th century women’s history, European intellectual history, Jewish studies, and Diaspora studies.

Ö. Kovács József, A PARASZTI TÁRSADALOM FELSZÁMOLÁSA A KOMMUNISTA DIKTATÚRÁBAN A vidéki Magyarország politikai társadalomtörténete 1945–1965 Ö. Kovács József monográfiája széles körű alapkutatásra épülő, a külföldi jelenkorkutatás elméletimódszertani kérdéseit is tárgyaló, megkerülhetetlen munka. A szerző a kollektivizálás folyamatát a paraszti életvilágok szemszögéből mutatja be. A mikroperspektívát előtérbe helyező társadalomtörténeti elemzés a kollektivizálásra olyan hadjáratként tekint, amelynek célja az volt, hogy felszámolja a kommunista diktatúra útjában álló utolsó, önálló gazdasági alappal, értékrenddel, ezáltal autonómiával rendelkező társadalmi nagycsoportot, a parasztságot. Ez a programadó ideológusok munkáiból és a végrehajtás módozataival egyértelműen igazolható megközelítés segít az események és következmények súlyának, tétjének megértésében. A szerző forrásként elsősorban az MDP–MSZMP-iratokat használta, a fővárosban őrzött állagok mellett feltárta valamennyi megyei levéltár vonatkozó dokumentumait. A hivatalos normákat ütközteti a pártfondokban fennmaradt, megannyi jogsértésről, megaláztatásról, sőt terrorról tanúskodó beszámolóval. E forrásbázis kiaknázásával egyszerre képes megjeleníteni a diktatúra logikáját és a paraszti életvilágok reakcióit.

Conferences of possible interest: ICCEES (International Council for Central and East European Studies) is a global network of research associations, institutes and individual scholars active in the field of Russian, Central and East European studies. ICCEES was founded in 1974, initially as a joint project of American, British and Canadian 5
research associations. Its main activities include publishing twice a year an ICCEES International Newsletter and organising every fifth year a World Congress. 2012 szeptemberében Áder János köztársasági elnök a MAGYAR ÉRDEMREND LOVAGKERESZTJE kitüntetést adományozta DR. VERMES GÁBOR történésznek, a newarki Rutgers Egyetem professor emeritusának. Romsics Gergely az alábbi beszédet mondta a kitüntetést átadásakor: Elnök Úr, Nagykövet Úr, Főkonzul Úr, tisztelt jelenlévők! Alakulhatott volna úgy is, hogy ma a New York-i főkonzulátuson Vermes Gábort, az amerikai olajipar kitűnő mérnökét köszöntjük. Professzor Úr, miután egy ausztriai menekkülttábor érintésével az Egyesült Államokba érkezett, először 1956-ban Budapesten szerzett geológusi diplomája révén kapott biztos állást – ráadásul egyből a Mexikói-öböl különböző pontjain, ahol magyart azelőtt ritkán láttak. Nincsen kétségem afelől, hogy Vermes Gábor olajmérnökként is számos szakmai elismerés birtokosa, és szűkebb közössége éppily megbecsült tagja lenne. Történészként mégis hálás vagyok a sorsnak, hogy Professzor Úr pályát váltott. Munkája és hivatása az lett, amire szinte egész addigi élete predesztinálta őt. Tíz év körüli zsidó fiúként élte meg és élte túl a Holokausztot – a budai hegyekben rejtőzött több századmagával Sztehlo Gábor evangélikus lelkész jóvoltából. A középiskola alatt és után saját bőrén tapasztalta meg a sztálinizmus kegyetlenségét és irracionalitását is. Geológus lett, mert oda irányította a rendszer – becsületére legyen mondva, a szakot kiváló eredménnyel végezte el. Ahogy arról egy 1999-es interjúban vallott, ezek az élmények, akárcsak 1956-os kalandos menekülése, valahol Louisiana partjainál nyerték el értelmüket. Ott, a Mexikói-öböl vizén döbbent rá, hogy mást kell kezdenie életével: megpróbálni átadni mindazt, amit az emberi gonoszságról és jóságról, a történelem kegyetlenségéről addig megtapasztalt. Vermes Gábor történész lett, doktori címét a Stanford Egyetemtől kapta 1966-ban. A magyar és az egyetemes történettudomány nagyobb szerencséjére – ezt egyből hozzá is teszem. Vermes Gábor ugyanis minden átélt megpróbáltatásból nem azt a következtetést vonta le, hogy jó és rossz harcában határozott tollvonással neki kell igazságot tennie. Ehelyett összetett folyamatok türelmes kutatója, a régmúltat formáló, mára elfeledett összefüggések feltárója lett. És kiváló tanár. Régi diákjai ma is emlegetik, és bár tanított a San Francisco State College-ban is, neve elsősorban a Rutgers Egyetemmel forrott össze. Ott dolgozott harminc éven át, nagyban hozzájárulva ahhoz, hogy amerikai fiatalok generációi tudjanak valamit, és nem is keveset, Közép-Európáról és hazánkról. Emellett Vermes Gábor az egyik legkiválóbb politikai életrajz szerzője. Nagy munkája Tisza Istvánt és korát árnyaltabban mutatja be, mint a tengernyi Tisza-irodalom bármelyik más darabja. Megkerülhetetlen olvasmány, amely iránti elismerésünket csak növeli, hogy a földrajzi távolság ellenére kiterjedt alapkutatások és forrásfeltárások képezik az alapját – a szerző történeti érzéke mellett. Különleges öröm, hogy Vermes Gábor csak a tanítástól vonult vissza, de nem a kutatástól. A reformkort feldolgozó új kötete, a Kulturális változások sodrában tavaly jelent meg otthon, amerikai kiadása előkészületben van. Az eddigiekből is kiderült már, hogy Professzor Úr nemcsak kiváló tudós, de nagyszívű ember is. Mégis, külön ki szeretném emelni több évtizedes társadalmi munkáját. A Hungarian Hidden Children nevű szervezet tagjaként a Vészkorszakot túlélt kortársaival együtt kísérelte meg a múlt feldolgozását, 6
nyilvános előadásaival számtalanszor mutatott példát a történelem higgadt értelmezésére, és szűkebb otthonában, New Yorkban a bevándorlókat, szegényeket és marginalizáltakat támogató közösségi kezdeményezések elkötelezett résztvevője volt és maradt évtizedeken át. Professzor Úr, megtiszteltetés számomra, és bizonnyal minden jelenlévő számára, hogy ma körünkben üdvözölhetjük és munkáját, ahogy emberi teljesítményét is, elismerhetjük. GRATULÁLUNK!!!! g h
