Basic information The Hradec Králové region is situated in Northeast Bohemia. The Krkonoše and the Orlice Mountains ranges form the northern and northwestern borders with Poland. The region’s largest cities are Hradec Králové, Trutnov, Náchod and Jičín. In 2004 in the survey conducted by the reputable czech newspaper the city of Hradec Králové was named the best place to live in the entire Czech Republic.

The major fields of manufacturing are: textiles and general engineering industries; medical technology, pharmaceutics; IT and electrical engineering; automotive, food, glass, chemical industries and plasticmaterials production. The regional capital hosts three universities – University of Hradec Králové: the Faculty of Management and Informatics, the Faculty of Education, the Faculty of Humanities; Charles University in Prague: the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy; and University of Defence: the Faculty of Military Health Sciences.

Transportation The Hradec Králové region has an extensive road and railway network with regional, inland, and international links - especially connections with Poland. The railway junction is at Hradec Králové. The D11 motorway connects Hradec Králové with Prague, where is an international airport.

Site specification Two buildings on the site of a former military fortification founded by Josef II in the 18th century. The barracks and hospital are cultural-heritage monuments within the framework of the city’s Josefov monument preserve. The buildings are currently not adequately used and are threatened by dereliction and devastation.

Site specification Former production site of a paper mill. A range of structures within the site are noted for their industrial architectural value (without stipulated protection as monuments); the site is partially blighted by modern structures. The urban location of the site is very exposed to the flow of the Úpa river; however it lies outside the Q100 flood plain.

Site specification Vast area of former military barracks in the city centre along the river Zdobnice. It was originally a textile factory and until 1994 was used as works and a storage of materials by the Army of the CR. Its very favourable location predestinating this site for residential uses.

Site specification Original sugar mill was built on this site already in 1871. In 1984 it was decided to convert sugar mill to sugarbeet processing. A vast complex of buildings from the eighties was never set in operation and is now already partly demolished a prepared for further use.
