Indonesian Introduction Reading can be defined as the ability to decode written language to understand the meaning. To put it another way, reading consists of coming back to speech through its graphic symbols. In short, meanings reside in the sounds of the spoken language. Speaking a language is the necessary first step to acquiring the ability to read a language with meaning. The recorded portion of the reading materials for this program will be found at the end of most units, starting with Unit Two. You can do the readings as it is most convenient for you. They can be done individually with each unit or at a more appropriate time afterwards. Instructions on how to proceed with the readings are contained in the audio portion of the course. This course teaches Bahasa Indonesia, which is the official language of Indonesia. There are many dialects spoken in Indonesia, but everyone learns and speaks Bahasa Indonesia. Bahasa Indonesia is a form of Malay, an Austronesian (or Malayo-Poleynesian) language vi
Indonesian Introduction (continued) which had been used as a lingua franca in the Indonesian archipelago for centuries. It was elevated to the status of official language with the Indonesian declaration of independence in 1945. It is spoken as a mother tongue by 7% of the population in Indonesia and 45% of the population of Malaysia, but all together, almost 200 million people speak it as a second language with varying degrees of proficiency. It is an essential means of communication in a region with more than 300 native languages, used for business and administrative purposes, at all levels of education and in all mass media.
