From the President
Dear Members of ‘Het Waterbouwdispuut’, First of all I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year! The Christmas holidays have just ended and we are already heading into our first exams of 2014. Maybe you have been enjoying the snow or flown to the sun and perhaps you have been studying most of the time, anyway I hope you have enjoyed your break! We can look back on a great semester with lots of hydraulic activities. In December we visited Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, for a four-day study trip. Before that we had the Hydraulic Dinner where we sat down with 24 students and four great hydraulic engineering companies. You can read more about these and our other activities in this edition of the Swell. At the end of December we had the change of the board. This means that Jolien, Camille and myself will be succeeded by three new board members: Eric, Floortje and Pieter. I look back on a fantastic year and wish the same for the new board of ‘Het Waterbouwdispuut’. The new year will be filled with lots of activities. We can look forward to several company cases, a symposium and off course another study tour to who knows where! We will keep you posted through our facebook, newsletter and website. I hope you will enjoy reading this Swell and don’t forget to visit the Hydraulic Coffee! See you water! Laurens Poelhekke President of ‘Het Waterbouwdipuut’

Excursion Heijmans A4
Excursion Heijmans A4 -by Lex Veerhuis Wednesday the 4th of December 17 students went to Schiedam to visit Heijmans’ project ‘A4 Delft – Schiedam’. At 12.00 we arrived at the construction site and welcomed by Marein Verkerk. After we got lunch a presentation started which introduced the students to the company and the project. The presentation told us about the way the company Heijmans consists. As a constructor and developer Heijmans sets to three segments: to live, to work en to link. The project A4 was all about the segment: the link. In this case a highway of 7 kilometres will be construct by building inter alia a landtunnel, an aque- and ecoduct. During the building process, Heijmans is responsible for all the contact to residents. After the presentation was done, we had the opportunity to visit the site. With two busses we received a guided tour on this rainy day. At this point it soon became clear how immense the project was: by using innovative ideas it’s possible design a road that reduces noise to a minimum level, that doesn’t ruin views and has the right price tag. For every student it was great to have a look at a civil project of this size. Because of this, we would like to thank Heijmans, and especially Marein Verkerk for having us.

MSc. Project – Brazil
MSc. Project – Brazil -by Camille Habets Sim, não, obrigado, de nada, eu queria um suco de laranja… we were good to go to Brazil. These few Portuguese keywords, which we had studied with the efficiency that comes with the linguistic feeling of the engineer’s brain, were definitely going to save us. We were heading for Itajaí, a relatively small port city (100.000 inhabitants) in the province of Santa Catarina. This would become our home for two months. With a subtenant in our student rooms and our shelter in Itajaí taken care of by the company for which we would carry out our multidisciplinary MSc. project, our financials were perfectly in order. The company for which we travelled to Brazil was APM Terminals, a large international container terminal operator. It had taken half a year to raise our project but with the help of Jan van Overeem and Luitze Perk from ARCADIS we got a go from APM Terminals in May 2013. Thank you gentlemen! From here on all the necessary arrangements were settled quickly and in September 2013 we were, as said, heading for Itajaí.

MSc. Project – Brazil
Our project concerned a feasibility study to port expansion possibilities. Unfortunately for the Swell readers, this is all what can be said about it here, because the specific content of this feasibility study has to remain confidential to a certain extent. Nonetheless it can be said that it was really an amazing project to work on and after nine weeks of hard but inspiring labour, we obtained some interesting results and the project was positively received by APM Terminals. The excellent working atmosphere at the office and the multiple feedback moments with enthusiastic employees of APM Terminals have certainly contributed to this result. Weekend time was properly spend on sightseeing trips, partying and living the Brazilian life with our new local friends. Highlights were amongst others our trip to Rio de Janeiro, Oktoberfest with a Brazilian touch and an unforgettable Feijoada beach party with the locals. And a nice bonus to our adventure: a new friend who will take with him the great Brazilian spirit to Holland by visiting us in May this year. To our fellow master students we can strongly recommend to grasp the opportunity to set up an international project with a multidisciplinary group and experience two amazing months at the other side of the world, while carrying out a project which is really cool to work on. And because you are there anyway, go backpacking afterwards! In behalf of my group, good luck for those who are planning to initiate such a project and boa viagem!

Travel report MEX Edinburgh
Travel report MEX Edinburgh -by Willem Bruijn On Thursday the 5th of December 22 students, Tjerk Zitman and Kasper Lendering left Delft behind them to visit Edinburgh! Leaving Delft was very difficult due to the weather. A very heavy storm came over The Netherlands. This caused several cancelled flights and trains. Luckily the flight was delayed, so that the students came on time at the airport. When the students arrived at Edinburgh the stormed was calmed and the students took the bus to the hostel. After everything was settled in the hostel, the group had to explore the city! This could only be done in the pubs which Edinburgh had to offer. The next day a bus was waiting in front of the hostel to pick us up. It drove us to the office of Royal HaskoningDHV, where we get a presentation by Mike Ramsay. He told us about the ‘Helix Project’ where they were working on lately. After the presentation we went off to the famous Falkirk Wheel, in which we got a tour. After that everyone had taken pictures of this amazing hydraulic construction, we went to the ‘Helix Project’ which was in the neighborhood, so that we could get vision of what Mike was telling us about in the morning. In the evening we had a good dinner and we were ready to try some whiskeys.

Travel report MEX Edinburgh
On Saturday we had to get up early, because we had to drive 3 hours to Collieston. This is small village (300 villagers) close to Aberdeen with a serious pier problem. The pier is more than 100 years old and it’s about to break. Huib Attema welcomed us here and gave us a tour around. We saw the pier has a lot of cracks and something has to be done about it. A few old villagers made a delicious lunch for us, so that we had enough energy to brainstorm about new alternatives for the pier. In short, it was a very nice day and everyone was really excited about it. In the evening we ate pizzas and went to some pubs again. Sunday was given as a free day, although we bought for everyone tickets for the rugby game between Edinburgh – Gloucester. The rest of the day was free, so everyone split up. Some were going to shop and others wanted to do some sightseeing in Edinburgh. At 19:00 we all gathered at a restaurant and finished our day in a salsa bar. On Monday morning we had to pack our bags and clean up the rooms. However the MEX wasn’t finished yet! We took the train to North Queens Ferry, where [naam] was waiting for us. He gave us a presentation about The Forth Bridge. After the presentation we were going to the top of the bridge by an elevator. The view was amazing and so was the bridge. In the afternoon there was time to buy some souvenirs before we went back to The Netherlands. At last I want to thank Tjerk Zitman and Kasper Lendering for travelling with us these days. And I would like to thank Harmen Schölvinck, Sjoerd Leenders and Floortje Hofland for helping me to organize the MEX!

Hydraulic Dinner
Hydraulic Dinner -By Lex Veerhuis The 22nd of November, the board of the Waterbouwdispuut organized a new event called ‘hydraulic dinner’. The event supposed to connect students with hydraulic orientated companies. Students could apply by sending their curriculum vitae to the board. After all four companies (to be known: Royal HaskoningDHV, van Oord, Witteveen+Bos and BAM) and 24 students were selected to join the dinner. The evening started early this day. At 16:00 the first students arrived at restaurant Vlaanderen, where the event took place. Everyone had the possibility to get a hydraulic or non-hydraulic drink and a Dutch bitterbal. Meanwhile the representatives of the companies walked in, and slightly started their conversations with students. The hydraulic dinner was already a great success! After everyone entered, the program started with a pubquiz presented by Tjerk Zitman. Students were divided into four groups so every group could join a company. Together they had to solve multiple questions where they needed acknowledge about hydraulic engineering, maths, but most of all: their common sense. With his questions, Tjerk pushed the groups to the extreme. At the end everyone could say they even learned something this evening!
21
Hydraulic Dinner
When the pubquiz was ended, the four companies had the possibility to introduce themselves with a short presentation. Thereafter the dinner could start. Everyone was served a fantastic three – course menu composed by the restaurant. Each course the students switched tables so they could have a talk with every company. After all the students and companies both have had a great evening. The board of the Waterbouwdispuut especially would like to thank Tjerk Zitman, by organizing the pubquiz this evening. We are looking forward to next edition!
Statistics ‘Hydraulic Dinner’ – survey: Students survey (17 correspondents): - Everyone said they had enough time to speak the companies. - 57% of the correspondents used the dinner for orientation, 22% used it for a graduation project and 17% for an internship. Company survey (all of them corresponded): - Everyone said they had enough time to speak the students. - Every company would like to participate in the next edition of the Hydraulic Dinner.

Tjerke Verhalen
Mulligans - by Tjerk Zitman “We’re definitely not having another beer in this ghastly place.” Just about everybody nodded approvingly. This particular place was a noisy restaurant where we took the effort of relocating something supposedly Italian from a clearly experienced piece of china to my stomach. The drinks that were served to assure sufficient profit for the proprietor were either a local brew or yeasted juice from grapes grown in the former British colony where mates have no worries. For the students joining this long-weekend excursion, Edinburgh appeared to provide overwhelming opportunities to exploit their preference to over-compensate intentional savings on decent nutrition with expenditure on mind-blowing liquid calories. Assembled on the pavement in front of the restaurant, we decided that a better place for having another beer should be a genuine Scottish pub. At least, that was the communis opinio after a debate so heated that it even silenced the pizza lovers who had deserted the restaurant for having their tobacco addiction go up in smoke in the street. Remaining question, however, was where to find such a paragon of Scottish authenticity. Less than ten minutes later, which was more than sufficient to rip a nearby ATM, a reconnaissance team called in with the answer and off we went to Mulligans Bar which, by the way, happened to be known as Edinburgh’s best Irish Pub. Upon arrival we found two ugly bouncers, one at either side of the entrance. They made quite clear that passing them was absolutely not an option unless solid evidence of our adulthood could be produced. When I searched for my id, one of the bouncers intervened. “Go on” he mumbled, “clearly you’re old enough.” “But I don’t even shave yet” I objected to this gross insult. “Yeah” he said, “I can see that, especially right under your nose. Now get in or get lost.” I felt an urge to inquire about how successful he had completed his training on customer satisfaction, but the idea that this bouncer might be a mere foretaste of the pub’s interior, withheld me. I imagined a platoon of hideous barmaids wearing extremely high heels and forage caps, throwing pints right into my face while regular customers laugh exhaustively. Maybe it was better to get lost than to get in, but I wasn’t allowed much time to think this over. I was pushed across the doorstep by three lovely students who had only one thing on their minds: get inside and dance.
26
Tjerke Verhalen
The place appeared crowded up to the level of sardines in a barrel and the music was loud enough to make any conversation impossible. The choice of music, however, fitted the girls’ purpose. We forced ourselves a way to the rear end of the divertissement where the population density was a little less, most probably due to the smell of toilets. While the guys tried to get hold of a beer, the girls didn’t hesitate for a second and started dancing. This drew the attention of a stranger dressed in a tight woodman’s shirt. He cast eyes on one of the girls, went towards her and held still. He stared at her for a while and then his body started shaking irregularly. At first I thought of a mental deficiency, but his intense smile suggested otherwise. He kept staring and shook himself ever closer to her. When the look on her face indicated that he had entered her comfort zone, I decided it was time to defend ‘my’ student. I positioned myself next to her, side by side, and looked the stranger right into the eyes. As he was broad-shouldered and at least one weirdy head taller than I am, I tried a sturdy expression. His body-shake stopped instantly and he looked at us searchingly. I had no idea whether this woodman would turn aggressive or drain. After at least ten very long seconds, he chose for the latter. “All right?” I asked the still dancing student. “Don’t worry” she replied, “I’m quite capable of handling older men suffering from an attention deficit.”
