Eindelijk is het dan zover. Het schrijven van een dankwoord leek altijd nog zo ver weg. Nu is dan toch het moment daar: ik mag het proefschrift verdedigen. Hoewel het schrijven van een proefschrift van tijd tot tijd een eenzame onderneming is, had ik dit werk nooit kunnen voltooien zonder de inzet en deskundige hulp van een groot aantal mensen. Allereerst gaat mijn dank uit naar mijn promotor Jeanne de Bruijn en naar mijn copromotoren Sandra Groeneveld en Geert de Vries. Zonder Jeanne en Geert was ik wellicht nooit aan dit onderzoek begonnen. Zij maakten de weg vrij voor een onderzoek en stimuleerden mij om na mijn afstuderen te gaan promoveren. Ze hebben vanaf het begin af aan vertrouwen in mij getoond en mij veel vrijheid gegeven in de opzet en uitvoering van het onderzoek. Ik heb dit erg prettig gevonden. Sandra was mijn deskundige vraagbaak voor methodologische vraagstukken. Daarnaast was ze een enorme steun en toeverlaat bij het vlot trekken van knelpunten en was zelfs vanuit Moskou steeds beschikbaar voor commentaar en feedback. Ook aan andere collega’s op de Vrije Universiteit heb ik goede herinneringen. Om er maar een paar te noemen: Irma, Marga, Maurice, Inger en Jaqueline, dank voor de leuke gesprekken. In het bijzonder wil ik mijn kamergenoot Brigitte Bloem bedanken. Het was heel prettig om ons samen door het promotietraject heen te worstelen, soms fluitend en soms… heel wat minder vrolijk. Ook nu we allebei bij ‘het Rijk’ werken, weten we elkaar nog te vinden. Jan Smit wil ik bedanken omdat hij op de achtergrond altijd bereid was tot het geven van praktische adviezen ten aanzien van de dataverzameling. Prof.dr. van der Zouwen, Stasja Draisma en de Committee Board van het Berger College for Work, Family and Children, hebben de vragenlijst becommentarieerd en zo bijgedragen aan de kwaliteit van het onderzoek. José Verouden was tot het laatst een belangrijke hulp bij het redigeren en controleren van mijn teksten. Tobias Kwakkelstein, Lars Tummers en Brenda Vermeeren wil ik ieder bedanken voor het lezen van een hoofdstuk en het stellen van kritische vragen. Wendie en Brigitte, bedankt dat jullie mijn paranimfen willen zijn en samen met mij het promotietraject afsluiten. Daarnaast heb ik veel gehad aan contacten met andere onderzoekers op het terrein van de grenzen tussen werk en privé buiten de Vrije Universiteit. Door met elkaar te discussiëren en onderzoeksgegevens uit te wisselen, heeft vooral Stephan Desrocher een belangrijke bijdrage geleverd aan deze studie.

Ik ben de leden van de leescommissie dankbaar voor de aandacht en de tijd die ze aan het beoordelen van mijn proefschrift hebben besteed. Dit onderzoek was daarnaast niet mogelijk geweest zonder de medewerking van een grote multinational die als case study diende in dit onderzoek. Mijn waardering gaat uit naar alle managers en respondenten die belangeloos hebben meegewerkt aan dit onderzoek. In het bijzonder wil ik hierbij Marieke bedanken. Ook wil ik MCW Studio’s bedanken voor het opzetten van de electronische vragenlijsten. Hoewel promovendi niet tot de door mij onderzochte werknemers behoren, leidt het schrijven van een proefschrift bijna onvermijdelijk tot poreuze grenzen tussen werk en privé. Niet alleen ik was regelmatig in het weekend aan het werk; in de eindfase waren mijn man en mijn ouders vaak bereid bij te springen bij tekstcorrecties. Annelie, dank je wel voor het maken van de mooie cover. Een proefschrift schrijven is een mooi en interessant, maar ook intensief traject. Ik ben dan ook zeer gezegend met vrienden, ouders en schoonouders die me er regelmatig aan hielpen herinneren dat er meer is dan werk. Tot slot richt ik het woord tot Martijn, die al meer dan zeventien jaar mijn maatje en partner is. Er is niets leukers dan aan het eind van de dag weer bij jou en Valentijn thuiskomen.

CURRICULUM VITAE
Rozemarijn de Man was born in The Hague, The Netherlands, on November 30, 1973. After obtaining her HAVO diploma in 1991, she worked for several years in the health service sector (psychiatric and elderly care). In 1995 she began a study in social work at the Haagse Hogeschool in The Hague. She graduated in 1999, after which she studied Social Cultural Sciences (SCW) at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam, within the differentiation ‘Social Problems and Policy’. In 2001 she graduated with credits. Subsequently, Rozemarijn became a Ph.D. student at the Department SCW of the Vu, where she conducted the study reported on in this thesis. Presently she is working at the Dutch ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK). She is a senior policy advisor on strategics for the direction of Labour issues for the Public Sector, and coordinator of the project ‘Safe Public Task’.
