About Asiascope
The Overseas Asian Film Festival Asiascope, which takes place for the second time from 23 until 25 April 2009 in Theatre Lantaren/Venster in Rotterdam, is being organised by and for Asian youth in the Netherlands. The mission of the festival is to make Asian youth and film lovers participate in the discussion about the Asian community in the Netherlands and the Asian Diaspora.
This year Asiascope selected twelve films, documentaries and shorts about Asian immigrants around the world. Among these productions from New Zealand, the United States, Israel, Canada, Australia, Singapore and the Netherlands. Each film brings up a topic that has to do with Asian immigrants; for example mixed relationships, the Asian beauty ideal and illegal immigration.
Asiascope Rotterdam was organised for the first time in 2007 by JONC, a Dutch-Chinese youth organisation. This year the festival was organised by the Asiascope Foundation. All people who work for Asiascope Rotterdam are volunteers.

Never Perfect
Never Perfect
The documentary Never Perfect (2007) explores the complex journey of a young Vietnamese-American woman’s struggle with popular perceptions of beauty and the stigma of racial self-hatred in her decision to undergo cosmetic surgery.
In 1982 her family left behind a tight-knit Vietnamese community for the suburban sprawl of California , U.S.A. Now 27 yearsold, having been reared amidst a backdrop of American malls, movies and magazines and living in the same suburban house in which she was raised, Mai-Anh challenges her self-diagnosed “quarter-life crisis” by way of “new location, new lifestyle, new look.” She begins a literal and symbolic transformation and reinvention of herself: a relocation from quiet suburbia to the heart of urban Los Angeles, a new lifestyle defined by living on her own for the first time, and finally, a new physical makeover: double eyelid surgery only days after starting her new life. But will she find the answers to her crisis on the operating room table?

Now, when the time has come to go back home, they return to Vietnam, hoping they can reclaim their confiscated lands - a cruel tale of loss and survival.
SMILE (short) Julia Kwan, Canada, 2007, 18 min. English spoken, no subtitles A Chinese family living in 1980s Vancouver (Canada) prepares to take their annual family portrait. HOLLYWOOD CHINESE (documentary) Arthur Dong, USA, 2007, 89 min. English spoken, no subtitles Hollywood Chinese is a captivating revelation on a littleknown chapter of cinema: the Chinese in American feature films. It brings together a fascinating portrait of actors, directors, writers, and iconic images to show how the Chinese have been imaged in movies. And at the same time, a haunting and telling undercurrent of racism and stereotypes weaves its way in, suggestive of the difficulties that Chinese men and women found working in Hollywood, an industry that was often ignorant about race, but at times paradoxically sensitive.
