Bijzondere veiling, 27 april 2014 Special Auction, 27 April 2014

Dutch people in Japan support a good cause: the Oranda Jima Foundation (OJF) Every year on King’s Day (formerly known as Queen’s Day) the Dutch Club organizes, in cooperation with the Netherlands Embassy and with the support of various sponsors, a special raffle for the OJF. In 2012, as well as in 2013, funds were raised in the amount of 500,000 yen that would be used for OJF’s projects in Yamada-machi. This year, in addition to the raffle, a special Auction of the old furniture of the Residence of the Ambassador will be held on Sunday 27th April of which the proceeds will also be donated to OJF. Mission of the Foundation After the devastating effects of the earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 on the city of Yamada in Iwate Prefecture, a group of Japanese and Dutch organisations decided to establish the Oranda Jima Foundation, focusing mainly on collecting funds to support reconstruction projects in Yamada machi. The name refers to an island in the Bay of Yamada, where in the year1643 a Dutch vessel named “Breskens” stranded. The island was later called “Oranda-jima”, or 'Holland Island' and to highlight this historical relationship, the Foundation was also given this name. The founders and permanent sponsors of the Oranda Jima Foundation include organisations such as DSM, Rabobank, Japan Netherlands Society (JNS) en Stichting ‘t Trekpaert, while other companies and individuals such as Van Der Architects en David Litt (lawyer) provide assistance and services free of charge. Together these organisations and individuals make up the Board of the Foundation. Additional financial and material support has also been received from parties such as NCCJ, KLM, ING, Canada Woods and Rational Japan. Canada Woods for instance donated high quality wood material for construction of the inner and outer walls while Rational Japan will bear responsibility for the kitchen and its interior. Status Yamada-machi A lot still needs to be done in Yamada-machi: the progress and reconstruction efforts are slow. The main focus is still on cleaning up the rubble, while most people still live in temporary housing facilities. While the local authorities have already set a list of priority projects, central decision-making processes and local scarcity of materials and resources have posed challenges. New national guidelines and rules concerning prevention and safety also take up time. Projects of the Oranda Jima Foundation The most important project that the Foundation is involved in is the construction of an Afterschool Facility for the Funakoshi Elementary school. Van Der Linden Architects is in charge of the design of the building that will house facilities such as a kitchen for cooking lessons, a space where psychological support will be provided to children and a computer room. The construction of the building is progressing speedily and the official opening is set at 24 May 2014.
The Foundation already donated a “Miffy Micro bus” in 2011 that transports children from their temporary houses to and from the schools. In addition, a sum was also donated to local sport clubs of the elementary schools to organize sports activities and other events. In cooperation with the local authorities, the OJF is considering financial assistance of other priority projects after the Afterschool Facility is completed. In addition to financing the construction of the building, the OJF was also able to realize the construction of a playground next it in cooperation and sponsored by Sumitomo.
