Uvědom si to, dokud ho máš.
Vy to tam hodíte. Cítíte se skvěle. Funguje to. Nebo jste se snad zamilovaly. Jste na svatbě, večeři či nějaké oslavě. Chcete, aby ty chvíle trvaly co nejdéle. Bojíte se, že nebudou. Právě když jsou vaše pochybnosti nejsilnější, chlast vám podá sklenku, stopečku tekutého naparování, světlovlasou a plnou energie. No tohle je přece dohoda snů. Takhle nějak to začíná. A pro mnohé to tady i končí. Když dosáhnou jednadvaceti, pětadvaceti nebo třiceti let, některé z nás vstoupí do přeplněné místnosti svatebních oslav nebo maturitních večírků či pohřebních hostin, a chlast už tam na ně nečeká. Zmizel.
Sedí u vašeho jídelního stolu, zabírá dvě místa a vytlačuje vaše milované. Než se nadějete, bude vás budit uprostřed noci a ve čtyři ráno vás kopat do břicha. Přišli vás navštívit přátelé a on ztropí scénu. Začne dávat najevo, kdo tady šéfuje. Má rozhodující slovo. Řeknete si, že už toho bylo dost. Požádáte ho, aby odešel. Odmítne. Dohoda je dohoda, říká. Chce svou odměnu a chce ji hned. Takhle to většinou probíhá. Říká se tomu závislost.
PRVNÍ ČÁST – POHLED ZPÁTKY
V restauracích začala sezóna otevřených zahrádek a moje asistentka měla nabitý program. Každé ráno mi s kávou a dokumenty přinášela čerstvé pokračování svých romancí. Mezitím cesty do Paříže, Londýna, Mexika. Každý máme jedno dítě: on dceru Caitlin a já syna Nicholase.
Léta to fungovalo dokonale. V zimě jsme četli a přikládali do krbu, a převlečení do flanelového pyžama s rybičkami jsme v pohodlí sledovali staré filmy.
Večer co večer mi stejný číšník přinesl první z mých tří dvoudecek jiskřivého bílého vína Sauvignon, salát s teplým kozím sýrem a bagetku.
Před snídaní jsme si každé ráno šli zaplavat a dopřávali si dlouhé snídaně, sedíce na lavičce z naplaveného dříví u stolu s ovocem, vejci a kávou.
hříček a měl zálibu v dobrých restauracích. Pokud během šesti měsíců poruším kterékoliv z těchto pravidel, slibuju, že vyhledám pomoc.“ Ke svým archům jsme připojili podpisy a napsali datum: 1. ledna 2007. Dělalo mi to víc než starost. Jenže to nepřipadalo v
Nemělo to chybu. Takhle to začíná. Jenže to nesplníte.
„A zároveň nenávidím.“ „Buďte obezřetná,“ varoval mne.
Řekl jsem své duši, buď v klidu a čekej bez naděje. Poněvadž naděje je nadějí na špatnou věc; čekej bez lásky, poněvadž láska je láskou ke špatné věci;
stále zbývá víra. Jenže víra a láska a naděje stále čekají.
musela uplatnit veškeré své novinářské schopnosti, abych si to, co mne zabíjelo – a podle statistik řady takových žen narůstají – dala do nějakého hlubšího a smysluplného kontextu.
Pohlední muži, kteří naštípali dřevo, srovnali ho do hranic a pak popíjeli černé pivo. „Když jich bude padesát dva, možná bych i souhlasila,“ zněla její odpověď.
Tak nějak se to tradovalo. Snad to s tou svatbou ani nemyslel vážně.
Je mi deset a mám mít svůj první sólový výstup s písní „All Through the Night“. Ztuhnu. V obecenstvu to začne šumět.
Najednou jsme měli kuchařku, služku a zahradníka. Táta každý večer zaparkoval svůj Land Rover před domem a vešel do dveří, temně krásný ve svém khaki oblečení do terénu. Cos udělal?“ Probouzelo to v nás záchvaty smíchu.
Zatímco knihovnice skládala mé sestře do náruče knížky o zvířatech – samý lev a jedovatý had –, já si četla příběhy o násilí a vraždách v Belgickém Kongu. Se sestrou jsme si ochočily žabáka, daly mu jméno Sam a nosily ho s sebou do školy v malé lepenkové krabici. Jednu sobotní noc jsme jí to vrátily i s úroky.
Dvě rodiny dostaly varování, naše a lékařova. A dárky už vůbec. Moji matku pruďase to nezlomilo.
A pak to skončilo. O mnoho let později, když jsme už všichni žili v manželství, odjeli rodiče zpátky do Afriky a strávili šest let v Botswaně. Zlomilo jí to srdce. Zatímco mě osamocení, deprese a stres táhly dolů, mámu něco jiného stahovalo
daleko, daleko hlouběji. Dlouhé roky – jako mnoho jiných žen – míchala pití s rohypnolem a to ji zničilo. Žena, kterou jsme znali z Afriky, zmizela a místo ní před námi stál někdo, kdo byl plný běsů, hořkosti a zoufalství. Věděla to ona? Bylo v jejím popíjení už tehdy něco zlověstného? To si nemyslím. Když jí pak zemřeli rodiče, oba na rakovinu kolem sedmdesátky, a táta znovu začal podnikat své daleké cesty do zámoří, nacházela útěchu v tvrdém alkoholu.
Všude střepy a rozlitý obsah lahví. A my tam zaraženě stojíme, zbědovanému otci stékají po tváři slzy vzteku a zoufalství, matka zkroušeně pláče, všichni jsme lapeni v pekle rodiny prokleté závislostmi, a úniková cesta v nedohlednu. Jednou ho otec nechal odpojit a my pak museli kamarádům vysvětlovat, že doma prostě telefon nemáme. Bylo to čím dál trapnější. Po létech, když jsme už byli všichni z domu a chtěli rodiče navštívit, nás otec málokdy varoval, že matka zrovna paří. Prostě jsme přijeli, a okamžitě nás obklopilo živoucí peklo.
A pak to náhle skončilo. Mohlo nám to ušetřit roky trápení, hněvu a bolesti. Špatné i dobré. Zničilo ho to a všem nám to zlomilo srdce.
Máma zvenku bušila do dveří. A
3. JSI NA ŠPATNÉ CESTĚ, ZLATO ROZDÍLY MEZI MUŽSKÝM A ŽENSKÝM POJETÍM ALKOHOLISMU SE SMAZÁVAJÍ
Jedno mojito, dvě mojita, tři mojita … PODLAHA! OBLÍBENÁ NAROZENINOVÁ POHLEDNICE
Alkohol je v naší společnosti všudypřítomný. Je nedílnou součástí našich představ o oslavách, sofistikovanosti a pohodě. Alkoholem se uvolňujeme, odměňujeme, vysazujeme – vydechneme. Vyznáte se ve vínech? Jste zazobaní. Vyznáte se ve vodkách? Jdete s dobou. Znáte své ochucené vodky, své koktejly? Jste mladá a žena.
Nelákalo nás ani to tiché zoufalství, rohypnol a odevzdanost.
Politicky nás stvořil masakr v My Lai a za rohem číhal skandál Watergate. Naše generace to měla mít všechno: kariéru, rodinu, svobodu projevu, stejná práva. Mnohé z nás řekly ano – i když postupně. Nebo s dostatečnou podporou. Ostatní řekly ne, hodily flintu do žita.
Nasadit úsměv a držet ho.
Ten nápad jim připadal příliš nepraktický a absurdní.
To druhé zaměstnání bych s mladším dítětem nezvládla.
Nepozvali by si ho k sobě, aby mu to řekli? Kdo ví, ale byla jsem jak opařená. Místo dostal člověk znalý oboru a hned první den ve své kanceláři si mne pozval k sobě. Velkou roli v tom hraje načasování, rovnováha a žonglování – a vlastní volby.
Udeřil přechod: stres a deprese vystrkovaly růžky. V roce 2011 porovnala profesorka Kolumbijské univerzity, Katherine Keyesová, třicet jedna mezinárodních průzkumů skupin lidí narozených v určitém roce a genderové rozdíly v konzumaci alkoholu a s tím související úmrtnost. „Neřekneme ,Odlož tu skleničku sherry a mazej zpátky do kuchyně,‘“ říká Keyesová.
„Jenže takový přístup ignoruje vliv politického klimatu a prostředí, v němž žijeme.“ Prostředí před nás staví výzvy: všímejte si vzestupu marketingu alkoholických nápojů a zaměření alkoholové kultury na ženy. Všichni moji přátelé to dělají. Ani by nás nenapadlo jeden den vynechat.
I když dvojitá dávka má i své nevýhody.

substance – říkejme jí vědecky etanol –, v mládí způsobila mnoho žalu a trápení.
Trochu to otupilo stres z mé nové střízlivosti a zároveň mi to přidělalo pár nových vrásek.
New York City. Její vozidlo se čelně střetlo s protijedoucím terénním SUV a zemřelo osm lidí, včetně Schulerové pětileté dcery a jejích tří neteří, všechny mladší deseti let. Úspěšná manažerka a vdaná matka dvou dětí měla v okamžiku smrti v žaludku nestrávený alkohol; v krvi jí naměřili více než dvojnásobek povoleného množství. Kalifornská matka tří dětí – proslavila se nejvíc svým populárním internetovým sloupkem „Nalej mi dvojitou: Historky o dvojčatech a tequile“ – odložila vývrtku.
On studoval filmovou školu, já se snažila stát spisovatelkou. Náš domácí, který hrál o víkendech pólo s princem Charlesem, pořádal uhozené večírky a my byli zváni. Nahoře pravé šampaňské a dole maďarská vína. Nové století přineslo mnohým z nás nový blahobyt a nekonečný výběr. A potom?
A v dubnu? Dívka na obálce nebyla žádná dívka. Bylo tam vejce: broskvové barvy, ručně malované, s nápisem „Lily“. Televizní kuchařka Martha Stewartová navázala tam, kde přestal seriál Mad Men, a martini vystřídala láhev vína Pařmenka.
Přichází v šesti příchutích včetně malinové s kakaem a hruškové s vanilkou.
Podle všeho koncem šedesátých let: tabákový gigant Phillip Morris koupil pivovary Miller a vnesl do marketingu techniku segmentace trhu a propagaci životních stylů. V podstatě vzali regionální pivní značku a udělali z ní dvojku na americkém trhu – a udělali to s pomocí marketingových praktik tabákového průmyslu.
„Řekněme to takhle,“ říká Jerigan. A mnoho dalších zemí neudělalo vůbec nic.
Kdo sleduje Twitter?
málokdo odvádí lepší práci než Jernigan a Jean Kilbourneová, autorka televizního dokumentu Něžná smrt: Jak si reklamní agentury představují ženy. „A proto jim nevěnují vědomou pozornost. Zadavatelé reklam si mnou ruce: lidé nemají zapnutý radar. Nemáme se na
