ABSTRACT Kundarti, Dewi, 1009010014. 2014: The Western and Indonesian Assessments to the Indonesian Police Bad Deal as Reflected in Their Comments on the Corresponding Videos Broadcast in YouTube. Undergraduate Thesis for SarjanaSastra Degree, English Department, Faculty of Letters, University of MuhammadiyahPurwokerto. This research aimed (1) to convey the Western public assessments to the Indonesian Police Bad Deal (briefed IPBD) video, (2) to convey the Indonesian public assessments to the IPBD video and (3) to know how the Western and Indonesian assessments on IPBD video shape the discourse. This research applied Appraisal theory especially judgment aspect. This study applied qualitative method to give the detailed description and explanation of the linguistics phenomenon in Western and Indonesian public comments in seeing IPBD video provided in YouTube and also quantitative method to find out the dominant of kind of judgments on both public comments. The study revealed that all of judgment sub‐aspects were found in both group comments. There are 178 comments which have been analyzed. Western comments were dominated by criticizing journalist as the victim in IPBD video that is about 13,5 % or 24 comments, while Indonesian comments were dominated by condemning the police because he had corrupted. It was about 37,6 % or there were 67 comments. It meant that Western and Indonesian public had different assessments in commenting IPBD issue.
