ABSTRACT
Reading literature will make people understand about all of human characteristics such as love, hatred, emotion, and ambition. Therefore, the novel The Sheriff’s Pregnant Wife written by Patricia Thayer tells about the anxiety of pregnant woman who does not really know about the father of the infant. In the thesis the writer would like to discuss the situational ironies and the relation between the situational ironies and the character’s development of Paige Keenan and Reed Larkin. Moreover, the focus of the problem in the thesis is theme, characters, settings, points of view, and irony. This research also uses formalistic approach to analyze the ironical situation happens in Paige and Reed’s life. Based on the analysis, Paige is a career woman that works at Law firm and meets Drew McCarran. They finally have a date until Paige gets pregnant. However, Drew does not want to be responsible so that she goes back to her hometown. When she returns, she meets with her ex-boy friend Reed. He lastly wants to be the father of Paige’s child and the irony happens in this part. To sum up, the irony happens when Drew McCarran is not responsible for Paige’s pregnancy and Reed Paige’s ex-boy friend accepts the condition of Paige. The relation between the situational irony and character development of Paige and Reed is complicated because situational irony can change someone’s characters in this novel. The love between Paige and Reed is sincere and they are easy to express their feeling to each other. The character development of Paige can be seen from the change of being strong, autonomous and introvert to being woman unselfish, sincere and understanding. Whereas Reed is a strong man, rather sentimental and love his family very much. After Reed faces various problems in his life, he changes to be a strong man, mature and wise to face all the problem. Finally, Reed is willing to get married with Paige. Reed and Paige are conscious that they still love each other although they have many problems to face.

ABSTRAK Membaca literature akan membuat orang mengerti tentang semua karakter manusia seperti cinta, kebencian yang mendalam, emosi dan ambisi. Novel The Sherrif’s Pregnant Wife yang ditulis oleh Patricia Thayer menceritakan tentang kekhawatiran seorang wanita yang hamil tanpa mempunyai suami. Penulis akan membahas situasi ironi dan hubungan antara situasi ironi dan penerapan karakter dari Paige dan Reed Larkin. Disamping poin analisa yang digunakan untuk dibahas adalah tema, karakter, tempat kejadian, sudut pandang, dan ironi. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan formalistik untuk menganalisa situasi ironi yang terjadi dalam kehidupan Paige dan Reed. Berdasarkan analisa, Paige adalah wanita karir yang bekerja di kantor hukum dan bertemu dengan Drew McCarran. Mereka akhirnya menjalin kekasih hingga Paige hamil. Drew tidak mau bertanggung jawab atas kehamilan Paige, jadi Paige kembali ke kota asalnya. Ketika dia kembali, dia bertemu dengan mantan kekasihnya Reed. Dia akhirnya ingin menjadi ayah dari anak Paige dan situasi irony terjadi pada bagian ini. Untuk menyimpulkan, situasi ironi terjadi ketika Drew McCarran tidak mau bertanggung jawab atas kehamilan Paige dan Reed mantan kekasih Paige mau menerima kondisi Paige. Hubungan antara situasi ironi dan penerapan karakter dari Paige dan Reed adalah rumit, karena situasi ironi dapat mengubah karakter seseorang dalam novel ini. Cinta antara Paige dan Reed yang tulus dan terjadi begitu saja dengan mudahnya antara perasaan yang satu dengan yang lain. Penerapan karakter dari Paige dapat terlihat dari perubahan Paige dari seorang wanita yang kuat, mandiri dan tertutup menjadi wanita yang tidak egois, jujur dan pengertian. Sedangkan Reed, dia adalah seorang pria yang kuat, sedikit sentimental, dan sangat menyayangi keluarganya. Setelah Reed menghadapi berbagai masalah dalam hidupnya Reed semakin menjadi pria yang kuat, dewasa dan bijaksana dalam menghadapi masalah apapun. Hingga akhirnya Reed bersedia untuk menikah dengan Paige. Reed dan Paige sadar bahwa mereka masih saling cinta walaupun banyak sekali masalah yang mereka hadapi, tetapi mereka masih tetap saling cinta satu dengan yang lain.
