MATCH PRESS KIT
Match background AC Sparta Praha will look to end a dire recent run of form against English opponents when they take on Liverpool FC in the UEFA Europa League round of 32, with the Reds – under manager Kenny Dalglish – visiting the Czech Republic for only the second time. Previous meetings • The two teams have yet to meet in European competition. • This will be Sparta's 15th match against an English side. Their previous 14 produced the record W3 D2 L9 (W2 D1 L4 at home). They have not won – or scored a goal – in their last five home fixtures against English clubs since beating Watford FC 4-0 in a UEFA Cup tie on 7 December 1983. Current Sparta coach Jozef Chovanec scored the first goal in that game. • Liverpool's only experience of Czech opposition came in the second round of the 2000/01 UEFA Cup, when they beat FC Slovan Liberec 1-0 at Anfield and 3-2 away. Match background • Sparta are unbeaten in their last three European home outings but drew two of those. They have failed to keep a clean sheet in their four most recent continental fixtures at Stadion Letná. • This is Sparta's first appearance in the spring phase of a UEFA club competition since they reached the UEFA Champions League round of 16 in 2003/04, when they lost out to AC Milan. • They last won a springtime European game when they beat FC Porto 2-0 in the second group stage of the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League. • Liverpool have not lost in five European away encounters this season, but all three of their group stage fixtures on their travels ended in draws. Team facts • Porto's Falcao is the top scorer in this season's UEFA Europa League with seven goals; Wilfried Bony - who left Sparta for Vitesse in the winter - is one of five players trailing him by two, along with Tomáš Necid (PFC CSKA Moskva), Giuseppe Rossi (Villarreal CF), Artem Milevskiy (FC Dynamo Kyiv) and Edinson Cavani (SSC Napoli). • Sparta defender Tomáš Řepka knows English football well, having played for West Ham United FC from 2001 to 2006. The 37-year-old will not look back on his four games against Liverpool fondly, however: his side drew one of them (1-1 at home) and lost the other three. • Sparta's Marek Matějovský was an unused substitute when Reading FC eliminated Liverpool from the FA Cup third round in 2009, his team prevailing 2-1 after extra time in a replay. • Liverpool defender Sotiris Kyrgiakos played for Panathinaikos FC when they overcame Sparta 2-0 in Prague and 2-1 at home during the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League second group stage. • Liverpool have fielded some notable Czech talents in the past, including Vladimír Šmicer, Milan Baroš and former Sparta winger Patrik Berger. • Dalglish, who has been made Liverpool manager until the end of the season following the departure of Roy Hodgson on 8 January, will be taking charge of his first European game as Reds coach. He had a six-year spell at the Anfield helm between 1985 and 1991 which reaped three English league titles. As a Liverpool player, he won the European Champion Clubs' Cup on three occasions. • The overall winners will take on the victors in the tie between KKS Lech Poznań and SC Braga in the round of 16 on 10 and 17 March, playing the first leg at home.

Head coach AC Sparta Praha: Jozef Chovanec Date of birth: 7 March 1960 Nationality: Czech Playing career: RH Cheb, AC Sparta Praha (twice), PSV Eindhoven Coaching career: AC Sparta Praha (three times), Czech Republic, 1. FK Příbram, FC Kubaň Krasnodar • Born in north-west Slovakia, Chovanec made his name in the Czech capital with Sparta and won eight league titles and three Czechoslovakian Cups, most as captain. Holding midfielder who later dropped back to central defence, he won 52 caps for Czechoslovakia and was the country's player of the year in 1986. • After moving to the Netherlands in 1989, won two Eredivisie titles and one Dutch Cup with PSV, but never cemented a first-team place; returned home to Sparta in 1991, retiring in 1995 after winning the first two titles in the newly independent Czech Republic, the last as player-coach. • Reappointed as Sparta coach in 1996, he left to take charge of the national team a year later; three times Czech coach of the year, his side reached UEFA EURO 2000 without dropping a point but failed to get out of group at the final tournament. • Resigned in November 2001 after missing out on 2002 FIFA World Cup, returning to club football with Příbram and then Russian side Kuban. • Welcomed back at Sparta in 2006, initially as chairman, he served as president, general manager and caretaker coach before returning to dug-out on a permanent basis in October 2008; won the 2009/10 title, his second as club's coach.
Liverpool FC: Kenny Dalglish Date of birth: 4 March 1951 Nationality: Scottish Playing career: Celtic FC, Liverpool FC Coaching career: Liverpool FC (twice), Blackburn Rovers FC, Newcastle United FC, Celtic FC • Scotland's most capped player with 102 international appearances, the striker started his career with four league titles and four Scottish Cups at Celtic from 1971 to 1977, leaving for Liverpool for a then British record £440,000 following a spell as the Hoops' captain. • Set a sizeable task in replacing Kop favourite Kevin Keegan, Dalglish succeeded effortlessly; scored the winner in the 1977/78 European Champion Clubs' Cup final against Club Brugge KV and as a player, went on to win two further European Cups, five league titles and four League Cups. • Appointed player-manager in 1985 and led Liverpool to their first domestic double in his first season; further successes followed in 1988 and 1990, but Dalglish unexpectedly resigned in early 1991. • Made a shock return to management with Blackburn that October, winning promotion to the Premier League and then title success in 1994/95; became the club's sporting director, but following spells at Newcastle and Celtic, his management career seemed to be over. • Having turned down a number of jobs was persuaded to rejoin Liverpool as an academy coach by Rafael Benítez in July 2009; helped hire Roy Hodgson as the Spaniard's successor in summer 2010, then took over on temporary basis following Hodgson's departure in January 2011.
