Tri Ani Rahmani. 2017.The Search for Personal Identity in Kathryn Erskine’ Mockingbird (2010). Thesis. Undergraduate Program. Mercu Buana University of Yogyakarta. Advisor: Restu Arini, S.Pd., M.Pd. Keywords: Personal Identity, Teenager, Psychological Approach The aim of this research in general is to analyze about the search of personal identity problems that experienced by the teenager. This study specifically discussed about the character with special need on the term of her personal identity search in a novel entitled Mockingbird written by Kathryn Erskine The focus of this research is the search for personal identity by the main character Caitlin Smith through a psychological approach.The purpose of this study is (1) to describe Caitlin’s personality in the novel (2) to presents Caitlin personal identity problems (3) to reveal the main character search for her personal identity in the Mockingbird novel.The study employed library study and descriptive qualitative analysis method. The data of the study are from the novel and other supporting documents. The data taken into the study are sentences,phrases, and words related to the search and understanding of Caitlin’s personal identity problem in psychological perspective. The research shared an analysis that can be concluded firstly, Caitlin Smith is characterized as a smart, polite, honest and family lover. Secondly, Caitlin personal identity problems was came from her Asperger syndrome, the lost feeling of her brother and people ability to accept her. Third, Caitlin’s personal identity finding was emerged through people acceptance about her special condition, her personal exploration to find the solution with her teacher involvement and guidance, Caitlin’s striving personalities whose brought her into tirelessly continuing effort to find the solution and her overcome inferiority feeling.

Pembimbing : Restu Arini, S.Pd., M.Pd Kata Kunci : Jati diri, Remaja, Pendekatan Psikologi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini pada umumnya adalah menganalisa tentang pencarian masalah identitas pribadi yang dialami remaja. Studi ini secara khusus membahas tentang karakter dengan kebutuhan khusus dalam pencarian identitas pribadi di sebuah novel berjudul Mockingbird yang ditulis oleh Kathryn Erskine. Tujuan Penelitian ini adalah (1) mendeskripsikan kepribadian Caitlin dalam novel (2) menghadirkan problem pencarian jati diri Caitlin (3) mengungkapkan pencarian jati diri karakter utama dalam novel Mockingbird. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kepustakaan dan metode analisis deskriptif kualitatif. Data-data yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini berasal dari novel dan juga dari sumber-sumber lain yang mendukung. Data yang digunakan berbentuk kalimat, frase, dan kata-kata yang berhubungan dengan pencarian jati diri Caitlin Smith dan pemahaman dalam perspektif psikologinya. Penelitian ini memiliki analisis yang dapat disimpulkan bahwa: pertama, karakter Caitlin Smith sebagai anak yang cerdas, santun, jujur dan sayang keluarga. Kedua, masalah identitas pribadi Caitlin berasal dari sindrom Asperger yang dideritanya, kehilangan saudara kandungnya dan kemampuan orang untuk menerimanya. Ketiga, temuan identitas pribadi Caitlin muncul melalui penerimaan orang lain terhadap dirinya dan kebutuhan khususnya, eksplorasi pribadinya untuk menemukan solusi dengan keikutsertaan dan bimbingan dari gurunya, kepribadian Caitlin yang terus berjuang dalam usaha tanpa kenal lelah untuk menemukan solusi dan perasaan inferioritas Caitlin yang telah teratasi beserta kompensasi untuk mengatasinya. .
