America or the USA? • The USA lie in North America (continent) • It borders Canada in the north and Mexico in the south • Its capital is Washington D.C. • Consult the map now!
What are the USA? • The USA = The United States of America • It is a democratic federal republic consisting of 50 states • Consult the map and name some of the states!
The Flag • It is called The StarSpangled Banner or Stars and Stripes. • It consists of 13 red and white stripes and 50 white stars in a blue rectangle. • The stripes represent the 13 colonies which founded the USA and the stars represent the 50 states of the USA.

The political system 1. • The USA are a democratic federation of 50 states • The basic of the political system is the Constitution from 1787 • It cannot be changed, only amended, e.g. the Fifteenth Amendment (dodatek) gave the black Americans the right to vote • There is a federal government in Washington D.C. and the 50 states have their own governments, too.
The political system 2. The legislative body is the Congress. It has two chambers - the House of Representatives and the Senate. The executive power lies in the hands of the President and his Cabinet the judicial branch – the most important federal court is the Supreme Court two main political parties are the Democrats (more liberal) and the Republicans (conservative)
