Presenting the invisible and unfathomable: Virtual museum and augmented reality of the Neolithic site in Bylany, Czech Republic Jak představit, co je neviditelné a neuchopitelné? Virtuální museum a rozšířená realita neolitické lokality v Bylanech Petr Květina – Jiří Unger – Petr Vavrečka The aim of the article is to demonstrate the possibility of presentation of prehistoric sites in locations where there is neither any preserved construction, nor any relic of the original landscape. Such sites usually meet with indifference both from the public and from institutions involved in preservation of historical monuments. This problem, however, does not relate only to the limited capacity to imagine features of which there is no visual evidence in the landscape. The problem consists also in the vast structural difference between the world of prehistoric societies and today’s reality. Bylany near Kutná Hora (Czech Republic), where one of the most important excavations of a Neolithic settlement area in Europe was undertaken, represents a model example of such a situation, no doubt typical for most prehistoric and early historic sites. The possibility of creating virtual and augmented reality proved to be a potential tool to grasp the invisible and to describe the disappeared proved to be. Cílem článku je ukázat možnosti prezentace prehistorických lokalit, a to na místech, kde se nedochovaly viditelné památky ani původní krajinný ráz. Taková místa jsou obvykle stranou zájmu, jak veřejnosti, tak institucionalizované památkové péče. Daný problém přitom nesouvisí pouze s omezenou schopností představit si objekty, které už v současné krajině neexistují. Jde také o potíž s obsáhlou strukturální rozdílností mezi světem prehistorických společností a realitou současnosti. Modelovým příkladem takové situace, jinak standardního stavu absolutní většiny prehistorických a raně historických lokalit, jsou Bylany u Kutné Hory, kde proběhly jedny z nejdůležitějších vykopávek neolitického sídliště v Evropě. Jako možné řešení toho, jak uchopit neviditelné a popsat zmizelé, se ukázalo využití možností virtuální a tzv. rozšířené (augmented) reality. K otázce redistribučních center štípané industrie kultury s lineární keramikou Litický inventář stupně IIb z Pustějova v Oderské bráně On the issue of chipped industry redistribution centres with the Linear Pottery Culture Lithic inventory of the IIb stage from Pustějov in the “Oderská brána” Gate Martin Oliva Všechny osady lidu LnK v poněkud marginálním regionu Oderské brány se vyznačují rozvinutou výrobou štípané industrie. Ta je vyrobena hlavně ze silicitu z krakovsko-čenstochovské jury, jehož zdroje jsou vzdáleny asi 150 km. Téměř na třetině artefaktů lze přesto zjistit zbytky kůry, úštěpy převládají nad čepelemi a jádra jsou stejně početná jako retušované nástroje. Vzhledem ke značné vzdálenosti od zdroje bývají stanoviště s takovou skladbou industrie považovány za sekundární výrobní centra. V diskusi je poukázáno na to, že zbytky kůry mohou být na artefaktech ponechávány záměrně, protože svědčí o jeho původu (geografickém, ale třeba i podzemním). Intenzita a způsob práce se silicity je kromě vzdálenosti od zdroje určována řadou dalších faktorů, jako je např. relaxace nebo soutěživost mezi štípači. Obliba této činnosti v odlehlé hornooderské enklávě LnK, s doklady rybolovu, může souviset i s mezolitickými tradicemi. Druhotná výrobní centra mohla vzniknout jen jako důsledek zvýšené poptávky po štípané industrii, a ta byla právě na sídlištích LnK často velmi nízká. All sites in the “Oderská brána” Gate, Czech Silesia and North Moravia, a somewhat marginal region from the viewpoint of LBK occupation, are linked by an abundant occurrence of chipped industry, produced mainly from the chert of the Cracowian-Częstochowa Jurassic formation, the outcrops of which are 150 km distant. In spite of this remnants of cortex were ascertained on nearly one third of artefacts and cores are as numerous as formal tools. Because of a considerable distance from the source the sites with such composition of industry are usually considered to be secondary production centres. The discussion makes a reference to the fact that remnants of cortex could be left on the artefacts intentionally, since they testify to the provenance of the stone (either geographical or perhaps even below-ground). In addition to the distance from the source, intensity and manner of working with flint is determined by a number of other factors, for instance relaxation or competitiveness among knappers. The special liking for this activity in the remote Upper Oder enclave and evidence of fishing can be related to the Mesolithic traditions. Secondary production centres could only come into existence as a consequence of an increased demand for chipped industry; however this demand was often very low exactly in the settlements with the LBK. Mělník) The key aspects of the architecture, material culture and significance of the Hallstatt period hillfort in Minice (Kralupy nad Vltavou, central Bohemia) Martin Trefný – Miloslav Slabina Příspěvek se zabývá dílčími problémy halštatského hradiště v Minicích u Kralup nad Vltavou, které bylo zkoumáno v letech 1970–1989. Soustředí se zejména na archeologické situace či nálezy, které mají nadregionální význam. Přináší nové pohledy na rekonstrukci a původ kamenných staveb na akropoli a prezentuje další neobvyklé nálezy a situace související s architekturou hradiště. Soustředí se rovněž na významné nálezy movité hmotné kultury, dokládající interregionální dálkové kontakty s oblastí Karpatské kotliny či západního Středomoří, a informuje o lokální produkci zejména keramiky či kostěné industrie. The article addresses specific issues surrounding the Hallstatt period hillfort in Minice near Kralupy nad Vltavou, which was investigated in 1970–1989. Special attention is paid to the archaeological situation and finds, which are of supra-regional importance. The work offers new views of the reconstruction and origin of stone structures at the acropolis and presents additional unusual finds and situations related to the hillfort’s architecture. It also focuses on finds of material culture, documenting interregional long-distance contacts with the Carpathian Basin and the western Mediterranean, as well as on local production, especially pottery and bone industry. Attention is likewise paid to the function of the hillfort from the perspective of the regional settlement network and its role as one of the regional centres of power. hillfort – Hallstatt period – central Bohemia – architecture – import – central locations

Proměny skel od 11. do konce 13. století v Čechách The glass transformation in Bohemia between the eleventh century and the end of the thirteenth century Eva Černá – Kateřina Tomková – Václav Hulínský Výzkumy posledních let prokázaly chemickou různorodost skel raného středověku v porovnání s uniformitou artefaktů následujícího vrcholného středověku. Předkládaný příspěvek, obsahující nástin vývoje sklářství v Čechách na pomezí obou období, se věnuje proměnám skel i sklářských technologií mezi 11. a 13. stoletím ve srovnání se sklářskou praxí 10. století. Prezentuje archeologické výsledky dlouhodobého a systematického studia, zahrnujícího též poznatky archeometrické (v současné době především nedestruktivní EPMA – SEM-EDS). Research in recent years has demonstrated the chemical heterogeneity of early medieval glass compared to the uniformity seen among artefacts in the subsequent High Middle Ages. The article, providing an overview of the development of glass production in Bohemia at the dividing line of these two periods, addresses the transformation of glass-working and glass-making technology between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries, in comparison with that in the tenth century. The use of non-destructive EPMA – SEM-EDS unabled to define various chemical types testifying to the divergent technologies and provenance of both the raw glass and artefacts. Pravěká transhumance a salašnické pastevectví na území České republiky: možnosti a pochybnosti Dagmar Dreslerova´ Horské sezónní pastevectví tvořilo důležitou součást hospodářství mnoha evropských zemí prakticky od počátků zemědělství. V novodobé historii České republiky se praktikovalo ve formě valašského pastevectví zhruba od konce 15. stol. na moravských vnějších západních Karpatech, Hrubém Jeseníku a Kralickém Sněžníku. V Čechách bylo zavedeno až v průběhu 17. stol. v Krkonoších a na Šumavě. Z ostatních horských hřebenů a ze starších období, zejména pravěkých, doklady této činnosti chybějí. Důvod, proč se horské sezónní pastevectví v Čechách objevovalo v tak malé míře, není plně objasněn. Jednou z příčin může být rozlehlost pahorkatin, která umožňovala případnou sezónní pastvu mimo horská území. Horské pylové profily však zaznamenávají indikátory lidského vlivu již na konci doby bronzové a v době železné. Prehistoric transhumance and summer farming in the Czech Republic: possibilities and doubts. Transhumance have formed a significant part of the economy in many regions of Europe. In the modern history of the Czech Republic such a system was practiced in the Moravian Outer Western Carpathians and the East Sudetes Hrubý Jeseník and Kralický Sněžník. It started with the arrival of nomadic shepherds, the Wallachians, in the 15th and 16th centuries and ceased to exist at the beginning of the 20th century. In contrast, in Bohemia transhumance has been almost unknown despite the fact that the whole of Bohemia is surrounded by mountain ranges. The only exceptions were so-called “mountain cabin farming” (Baudenwirtschaft) in the Krkonoše Mountains, introduced in this region by Alpine woodcutters in the late 17–19th centuries, and animal husbandry in the Šumava Mountains taking place at the same time. The reason why the mountain summer farming was not practiced in Bohemia on a bigger scale is not fully understood. Environmental rather than cultural factors may be behind it; both transhumance and summer farming may be practiced in inland uplands. In this context the possibility of a specific form of prehistoric/early medieval mountain farming system is discussed as well as the limitations of its detection in archaeological and palynological records. transhumance – summer farming – prehistory – Czech Republic – mountain farming – palynology

Poznámka k úloze grafitu ve středověké keramice Moravy a Slezska Milan Holub Středověcí hrnčíři používali na Moravě grafit k výrobě keramiky od 9. století. Běžná užitková grafitová keramika mizí z trhu v průběhu 13. století, poté byly vyráběny prakticky jen masivní zásobnice. Zvětraliny obsahující grafit byly těženy v okolí výskytů grafitu. Hruběji zrnité grafitové vločky spolu s úlomky hornin se stávaly součástí ostřiva, jemnozrnný grafit spolu s organickou příměsí byl součástí pojiva. Na úlohu grafitu při výrobě a použití keramiky neexistuje jednotný názor. Použijeme-li k hodnocení požadavky na moderní grafitové tyglíky, zjistíme, že vysoká tepelná vodivost, objemová stálost a hydrofobie grafitu byly hlavními vlastnostmi ovlivňujícími pozitivně (technologicky a ekonomicky) sušení, výpal i využívání grafitové keramiky. středověk – Morava – grafitová keramika – tyglíky – grafit

Observations on the role of graphite in medieval pottery from Moravia and Silesia. Medieval potters in Moravia began using graphite to produce pottery in the ninth century. Common utilitarian graphite pottery disappeared from the market during the course of the thirteenth century, with further production essentially limited to large storage vessels. Sediments containing graphite were collected in the vicinity of the occurrence of graphite. Coarse-grained graphite flakes along with fragments of minerals were used as temper, while fine-grained graphite and organic material were used as binders. There is no consensus on the role of graphite in the production and use of pottery. If demands on modern graphite crucibles are used as evaluation criteria, it can be seen that the high thermal conductivity, volume stability and hydrophobic nature of graphite were the main qualities with a positive impact (technologically and economically) on the drying, firing and use of graphite pottery.
