Methods
‘Peaks’ method: based on combination of minimum in backscatter gradient and maximum in time variance. Resolution 10 minutes, 1 layer detection ‘Wavelet’ method: look for first local maxima in scale-average wavelet power (Haar wavelet 15-360 m). Resolution 2 minutes, 2 layer detection
BKGmonitoring Continuous monitoring • Lutjewad • Cabauw • CO2, CH4, N2O, SF6,CFCs, Rn •Event sampling: CO, isotopes etc
Airborne flux measurements
Airborne flux measurements
1.
2.
3.
make operational airborne, mobile flux platform for measurement of turbulent fluxes of heat momentum and CO2 develop observational strategy for full year sampling of major landscapes produce flux maps, continuous in space and time, for a-priori inversion estimates

Horizontal / Landscape campaigns • •
coordinated with ME-1 e.g. urban, forests, inland and coastal waters
Modelling
Will further develop the necessary forward (3D atmospheric) models providing the transport terms and source-receptor matrices for the inverse methods. It will further develop inversion algorithms allowing ingestion of the full suit of measurements made in WP2 and 3. Both eulerian and lagrangian approaches will be used.
Modelling • 3D • forward • inverse
Where is the gain/loss in information at high resolution?
1. Use Models in nested mode
2. Perform inversions with Synthetic data 3. Analyze results
Model inter-comparison
• 4Models forward simulations of CO2, 222Rn, SF6 • + Three randomly perturbed flux fields of CO2 • Every model inverts perturbed signal generated by other models (3x4= 12 inversions for each model), yields: A) Transport sensitivity: spread of results obtained by a single inversion B) Inversion sensitivity: Spread of results based on the same data

The effect of the spatial arrangement of wetlands on water quality improvement and carbon sequestration (ME5) Jan Vermaat, Marjan van Herwijnen, Rien Aerts
ME5 aim and approach • Aim: To analyse the effects of climate-related changes in hydrology (water input and water levels) in the Veenweidegebied on water quality change and carbon storage in networks of wetlands of variable connectivity and spatial extent; • Or, simply, will the arrangement of ditches in these polder wetlands affect their effectivity as N,P-filters/C-sequesters? • Approach: multivariate: (a) collect as many data as possible from as many polders as possible; (b) then compile annual water, nutrient and carbon mass balances; (c ) to downscale IPCC scenarios and implement these in mass balance models • Important partners: water boards
ME5 progress • We are in the stage of negotiating with water boards and identifying polders, and fine tuning with other BSIK projects • Optimism from earlier work: – Water balances differ greatly between polders – Area of water seems to affect P-retention, but we do not know the pattern yet for the left half of the graph, i.e. where most Veenweidepolders will be ….
