MINUTE SMILES (MINUTE PLAYS)
2
SYNOPSIS
Minute plays are short audio drama units in the widest sense of the word. Their duration usually ranges from one to two minutes. Czech Radio started recording them regularly in February 2012 and first broadcast them in October of the same year. They cover a vast range of topics and were produced by an equally diverse group of authors ranging from renowned Czech dramaturges, writers, film authors to young debutants. For the Grand Prix Nova festival we have selected a series of five plays under the title Minute Smiles; they take in comic situations from the past and present and are characterised by humour and perspective. Minute Smiles: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
Jak vyhynuli štulíci (How The Cuddlies Died Out) Rande podle Freuda (A Date According to Freud) Svědomitá uklízečka (The Conscientious Cleaning Lady) Alpská romance (An Alpine Romance) Strauss a navigace (Strauss and Navigation)
All the plays are available for listening online on www.minutovehry.cz. As this project also aims at involving the listeners themselves, it gives them the possibility to evaluate the pieces online and invites them to write their own scripts. Two plays from the project, both inspired by Bible ranked high in the international festival Prix Marulić in Short Forms category (the second place for Daniela Fischerová: How the Cuddlies Died Out; the third place for Petr Hudský: Home Birth). A collection of 10 more minute plays holding up a mirror to contemporary life came fifth at the 2013 Prix Europa festival in the Radio Fiction – Series or Serials of the Year category.

Hudba, moře, zvířecí zvuky, loď.
Noe:
Nastupujte do archy, tvorové boží! Pěkně po dvou, houser s husou… kocour s kočkou… had s hadicí… Ženo, zapiš je! A vy jste kdo?
Štulíci:
(společně) Praotče Noe, my jsme štulíci.
Noe:
Zapiš je, ženo! Kdo z vás je samička?
Štulíci:
(společně) My jsme prosím oba samci. Jsme registrovaní partneři.
Noe:
Tak to ne, pánové. To by mi u šéfa neprošlo.
První štulík:
Ale Noe! Zákony už se změnily!
Druhý štulík:
Fakt, Noe, je pokrok! Tolerance a tak! Hele, tady na to máme papíry.
Noe:
Šéf je tvrďák. Lituju, štulíci, asi vyhynete. Ženo, škrtni je.
Štulíci:
(zoufale) No Noe, moment, nenechávej nás tady, Noe! Přece jsme taky tvorové boží… Hlasy štulíků se vzdalují, loď odplouvá.
Noe:
Jo jo, vypadá to na pořádný déšť. (zahřmí)
6
Music, sea, animal sounds, ship.
Noah:
All aboard the Ark, God’s creatures! In pairs, please, goose with gander…stag with doe…stallion with mare…Make entries for them, woman! And who might you be?
Cuddlies:
(in unison) Father Noah, we’re Cuddlies.
Noah:
Note them down, woman! Which of you is female?
Cuddlies:
(in unison) We’re both males. We’re registered partners.
Noah:
In that case, sorry chaps. The boss wouldn’t have it.
First Cuddly: But Noah! The laws have changed! Second Cuddly:
Honestly, Noah, it’s progress! Tolerance and all that! Look, we’ve got papers to prove it.
Noah:
The boss is a hard man. I’m sorry, Cuddlies, I guess you’ll die out. Woman, cross them off.
Cuddlies:
(desperately) One second, Noah, don’t leave us here, Noah! After all, we’re God’s creatures too… Cuddlies voices fade into the distance, ship sails away.
Noah:
Aye, aye, it looks like a proper downpour. (clap of thunder)

(šumění větru, ptáci, jemné šplouchání vody, hudba) ON:
Jsem Ivan. Vytrhal jsem si kvůli tobě chlupy z nosu, abych ti přišel přitažlivější.
ONA:
ON:
ONA:
Přijdeš mi tajemný a nebezpečný. Chtěla bych, abys mě přepadl v noci v parku a vzal si mě násilím.
ON:
ON:
ONA:
FREUD:
(jiné prostředí, píše) Takto bude vypadat komunikace mezi mužem a ženou za sto let. Sigmund Freud, Vídeň 1913.
(hudba)

(rustling wind, birds, softly lapping water, music) HIM:
My name’s Ivan. I’ve trimmed my nose hairs so as to appear more attractive to you.
HER:
Hi, so it’s you. I’m glad you’ve come – I haven’t had sex in six months.
HIM:
I have a complex about my receding hairline and I hope I can get you drunk in a pub because I can’t afford a restaurant.
HER:
I find you mysterious and dangerous. I’d like you to assault me in a park at night and take me by force.
HIM:
If we get married, you’ll always come second for me, after my mother.
HER:
I like your moustache. It symbolises a firm and unrelenting phallus that you’re unashamed to expose.
HIM:
You’re wearing a skirt that emphasises your hips and a low-cut blouse and a broche with which you’re trying to attract attention to your breasts. You’re trying to show you’re fertile and ready to have strong male offspring. I like that. Shall we go?
HER:
I’ll laugh at whatever you say, but only if you don’t talk about your feelings. Let’s go.
FREUD:
(different setting, writing) This is what communication between a man and a woman will look like in 100 years. Sigmund Freud, Vienna 1913.

THE CONSCIENTIOUS CLEANING LADY (Minute Play from a listeners’ competition)
Characters and cast: Scientist – Jan Vlasák Mrs. Howard – Lucie Juřičková

(hudba) Vědec:
Paní Howardová, pojďte sem.
Mrs. Howardová:
Co si přejete, pane?
Vědec:
Můžete mi laskavě vysvětlit, co jste prováděla v mojí laboratoři?
Mrs. Howardová:
Jen pořádek, pane.
Vědec:
Proboha ženská, vždyť vy … vy jste mi tu uklidila!
Mrs. Howardová:
Dovoluji si vás upozornit, že úklid mám v popisu práce. Už třicet let.
Vědec:
A to jste si ani nevšimla, co jste uklízela?
Tak si říkám: „Marie, nech ho, on si to sám vyhodí“. Přijdu v pondělí a vedle toho shnilýho jabka ležely ještě tři plesnivý pomeranče! A jak to tady smrdělo, fuj! A pak jsem našla něco hodně divnýho v misce, nešlo to umejt a vypadalo to jako smrkanec.
Vědec:
Ano, to totiž byl smrkanec. Můj osobní!
Mrs. Howardová:
No tak to je vrchol!
Vědec:
Já si vyprošuji, abyste tu svévolně manipulovala s mými hleny.
Mrs. Howardová:
To už přestává všechno. Sbohem, pane Flemingu!
(práskne dveřmi, hudba)
14
(music) Scientist:
Mrs. Howard, come here please.
Mrs. Howard:
What can I do for you, sir?
Scientist:
Can you kindly explain what you’ve done in my laboratory?
Mrs. Howard:
I just tidied up, sir.
Scientist:
Good lord, woman, you’ve… you’ve tidied up for me!
Mrs. Howard:
Allow me to draw your attention to the fact that tidying has been part of my job description for 30 years.
Scientist:
And you didn’t notice what you were cleaning up?
Mrs. Howard:
I did, and I tell you it made me feel nauseous. You just left that apple you didn’t finish on Friday lying on the table! I said to myself: “Leave it, Maria, he’ll throw it out himself.” I come on Monday and beside that putrid apple there are three mouldy oranges! And the stink – yuck! Then I found something very odd indeed in a bowl; it was impossible to wash out and looked like snot.
Scientist:
Yes, that was snot. My own!
Mrs. Howard:
I’ve heard it all now!
Scientist:
I insist that you don’t wilfully fiddle with my snot.
Mrs. Howard:
That’s the limit. You won’t see me here again! You can rot here with your phlegm and your mouldy oranges. But I’ll tell you this: If everybody in the whole of London was a pig like you, it’d cause thousands of deaths. Goodbye, Mr. Fleming.
(door slams, music)

AN ALPINE ROMANCE

Horská vichřice. Eva:
Petře, slyšíš mě?
Petr:
Eva:
Vůbec necítím prsty, určitě mi umrzly.
Petr:
Vlez si ke mně do spacáku.
Eva:
Nebudu se hýbat, nechci spadnout. To radši zmrznu. Ach jo, ať aspoň umřu hezká.
Petr:
Neblbni. Vydrž. Vědí o nás.
Eva:
To už si říkal. (krátká pauza) V noci se mi zdálo o těch čtyřech letech, co jsme spolu.
Petr:
(optimisticky, chce jí dodat sílu) Láska na první pohled… a jak nám to pořád klape!
Eva:
Bylo to s tebou hrozně hezký, Petře.
Petr:
Co bylo… Je. A bude! Příští rok vyrazíme do And.
Eva:
Milovala jsem tě jako nikoho na světě. Jenom jednou… Můžeš mi to odpustit?
Petr:
Hele, Evi, to teď neřeš. (z dálky zvuk helikoptéry)
Eva:
Ale já chci… než bude konec…
Petr:
Počkej, slyšíš? To je vrtulník! (volá) Tady jsme! Viděli nás. Evo, miláčku. Cos to říkala o Karlovi?
Eva:
Já? Nic. To byly nejspíš halucinace… z toho podchlazení.
Petr:
(smířeně) No, tak dobrá.
18
(Mountain windstorm) Eva:
Petr, can you hear me?
Petr:
Yeah. And if you want to curse me again for being to blame, don’t. Nobody expected such a storm. Get it into your head, this is Grossglockner, not a climbing wall in Ppprague. Christ, now it’s 25 below. Be glad we found a ledge to bivouac on.
Eva:
I can’t feel my fingers at all – they have to be frostbitten.
Petr:
Get into my sleeping bag with me.
Eva:
I won’t move. I don’t want to fall. I’d rather freeze. Oh well, I hope I die pretty, at least.
Petr:
Don’t be daft. Hang on. They know about us.
Eva:
So you’ve said. (short pause). I dreamt last night about the four years we’ve been together.
Petr:
(optimistically, trying to give her heart) Love at first sight… and we’re still great together!
Eva:
It was really lovely with you, Petr.
Petr:
What ‘was’… It is. And will be! We’ll go to the Andes next year.
Eva:
I loved you like nobody on earth. Just once… I slept with Karel, you know, that time in the Pamirs. Forgive me?
Petr:
Not now, Eva. (sound of a helicopter in the distance)
Eva:
But I want to… before it’s all over…
Petr:
Wait, hear that? It’s a helicopter! (calls) We’re here! They’ve seen us, Eva darling. What were you saying about Karel?
Eva:
Me? Nothing. It must’ve been a hallucination… from the hypothermia.
Petr:
(placated) OK, then.

STRAUSS AND NAVIGATION
Characters and cast: GPS, later: A woman – Jana Stryková A driver – Luboš Veselý
21
Hudba. Uvnitř auta. Navigace.
Navigace :
Po dvou stech metrech zahněte prudce doprava, a pak zase doleva.
Řidič:
(nervózní) Tady už jsem byl, ne? Do háje…
Navigace:
Po sto metrech zahněte prudce doprava…
Řidič:
Jeď, jeď, máš zelenou.
Navigace:
…a pak zase doleva.
Řidič:
Co je to za blbost?!
Navigace:
Právě jste dojeli na místo určení. Hezký den.
Řidič:
Co kecáš?! Tady žádnej koncertní sál není! (zvoní telefon) Není! Sakra.
22
Music. Inside a car. GPS. It is raining, wipers are working. (The voice from the GPS is identical with the voice of the woman, only slightly distorted.)
Navigation:
After two hundred metres, take a sharp turn to the right, followed by a left turn.
Driver:
(nervous) I’ve already been here, haven’t I? Damn!
Navigation:
After one hundred metres, take a sharp turn to the right…
Driver:
Go, go, there’s a green light.
Navigation:
…followed by a left turn.
Driver:
What is this shit?!
Navigation:
You have reached your destination. Have a nice day.
Driver:
You liar! There’s no concert hall here! (phone ringing) Nothing like that! Damn it. (answering the phone) Hi, Marketa.
Woman:
Peter, where are you, for Christ’s sake? There’s a thousand people waiting for you!
Driver:
I know… I can’t find the hall.
Woman:
How come? But I gave you my GPS.
Driver:
Well, yes, but it’s acting funny...
Woman:
I told you, when you get to the chain bridge, you have to take a sharp turn to the right after about two hundred metres, (Man: right turn, yes), followed by a left turn (Man: left turn...). And after three hundred metres you get to the hall. 23
Řidič:
Něco podobnýho ta navigace říkala taky.
Žena:
A řetězový most už jsi přejel?
Řidič:
Ne. Žádnej tu nikde není.
Žena:
Petře, kde teda jsi?
Řidič:
Kde? No přece ve Straussově ulici. V Linzi!
Žena:
Ale koncert máš ve Vídni. Straussova Strasse 22. (položí telefon)
Řidič:
(rezignovaně) Strausse jsem vždycky nenáviděl. (hudba) Ne-ná-vi-děl. (Hudba, muž řve) NENÁVIDĚĚĚL!
Konec hudby.
24
Driver:
That’s roughly what the GPS was saying too.
Woman:
And have you crossed the chain bridge?
Driver:
No. There is no chain bridge here.
Woman:
Peter, where are you exactly?
Driver:
Where? I’m on Strauss Street. In Linz!
Woman:
But the concert is in Vienna. Strauss Strasse 22. (and hangs up)
Driver:
(resigned) I’ve always hated Strauss. (music) Ha-ted. (Music, man screaming) HAAATEEEED!
Music ends.
