OTTETTO The ’dance concert’ OTTETTO (8 Swings for His Highness) is built around Octet, a 16-minute musical delicacy by Igor Stravinsky from 1923, a purely structural composition void of any narrative meanings, which the composer himself called “dry, cold and transparent, like an ’extradry’ champagne”. OTTETTO by Iztok Kovač choreographically decomposes analyses and then reconstructs and visualises this exceptional musical work. The choreographer explores from various angles and standpoints the extant relationships of the artists involved with this composition. The performance thus yields the responses of the conductor, the eight musicians, the five dancers and the team of visual artists. Along with the lively joint sequences these dissimilar responses are an expansion of the anticipated execution of the original work, which now has an 8-part structure for 14 performers. In Octet, which is scored in the classical sonata cycle form for an unusual combination of woodwind and brass instruments, Stravinsky, peculiarly, employed the technical means of baroque and classicistic music. The more contemporary harmonies and rhythmic complexity introducean effect of Verfremdung (Alienation) to the polyphonic technique, and also herald the beginning of neoclassicism in the music history.

The movement of the dancers, the international company EnKnapGroup, is marked by a specific vocabulary derived from the analyses of parts for each individual instrument in Stravinsky’s Octet, which both emphasises the abstract structure of the composition and renders it alien. The movement is frequently subjected to a strict periodic rhythm of the metronome, which refers to the presence of the maestro. In OTTETTO the composition can be metaphorically seen as a musical work scored for theatre (though of course this was not the case). Octet by Stravinsky, which was received with general dismay and considered a bad joke in his time, in OTTETTO (8 Swings for His Highness) is played live on stage by the Slovenian music ensemble Festine conducted by Živa Ploj Peršuh. OTTETTO, in which visual elements – videography, set and light set design – play a crucial role in its space determination, this musical work and its significance is penetrated by the regard of present-day artists, revealing it as still relevant and contemporary.

IZTOK KOVAC The choreographer, teacher and dancer Iztok Kovač in 1990s virtually out of nothing established the notion of the Slovene contemporary dance in the cultural space of Europe and beyond with his international dance company En-Knap, founded in 1993. A year later Kovač established EN-KNAP Productions. After 14 years of project-based work, in 2007 he founded the international dance company EnKnapGroup, the first permanent ensemble for contemporary dance in Slovenia, thus beginning working on a repertory basis. Two years later EN-KNAP Productions was entrusted the management of the Španski Borci Cultural Centre in Ljubljana, where Iztok Kovač is the artistic director, and programmer of the domestic and international programmes. In addition to 30 own projects, artistic direction and pedagogical work, his oeuvre includes also five dance films. In 20 years, his EN-KNAP has introduced and established its own aesthetics inside the European space and formed its trademark, into which many acclaimed coproducers have invested from the outset. For his work, Iztok Kovač has received prominent domestic and international awards. EN-KNAP PRODUCTIONS The international dance group En-Knap was founded in 1993 by Iztok Kovač in Leuven, Belgium, under the wings of the productionmanagement house Stuc and the Klapstuk Festival. A year later the group moved its headquarters to Ljubljana, where it established EN-KNAP Productions. The internationally renowned production company has introduced and established its trademark aesthetics inside
