Marijan Jozic / Head of the Development Engineering KLM Marijan Jozic has been involved in avionics engineering for over 35 years. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace technique in 1978 from the Higher Technical School at the University of Zagreb (Croatia) and began his career with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines in 1980 as a Test Equipment Calibration and Maintenance Engineer in the Test Equipment Maintenance Laboratory. In 1986 he earned his second Bachelor of Science degree in Electronics and Telecommunications from Higher Technical School at the University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands). Since 1987, Marijan has been working at KLM engineering as an Avionics Systems Engineer. In 1998 he was promoted to Senior Engineer for Avionics Systems for 747 aircraft. During his career at KLM Engineering, he was also Project Manager for several avionics fleet wide projects including SATCOM, RVSM, FM Immunity and 8.33 kHz channel spacing and many, many more. In 2001 he was moved from to another position to lead the fleet wide Avionics projects. Just one year later (2002) he was promoted to Program Manager for all modification programs at the KLM fleet. In this function he successfully finished many projects (Glass cockpit at the 747 classic, Tras lock, Enlarged pitch, etc). The biggest success was the project Avionics Master Plan that was set up to install the TAWS/MMR/GPS/FMS system on the whole KLM fleet. That was exactly the reason that Marijan Jozic got his VOLARE award in Montreal at the AMC (Avionics Maintenance Conference) in 2004. The VOLARE award is the highest award any avionics engineer can get. It can be compared with the Pulitzer price for literature or the Nobel price for science. The award was given by the AAI (American Avionics Institute). Marijan was nominated twice (2004 and 2005) for Aerospace Journalist of the Year award in the category Avionics. Since 2012, Marijan is a Chairman of the steering committee of the AMC (Avionics Maintenance Conference), Member of Aerospace Systems Advice Committee at Dutch Aerospace Laboratory and also Steering member of Aviation Knowledge and Career day at the University of Amsterdam. He is also a chairman of ARINC working group which will define: Standard for Cost effective acquisition. At this moment Marijan is working as Head of the Development Engineering at KLM Component Services and he is also a Technical Director of Amstel-M modification company.

Robert J. de Boer / Lector Aviation Engineering Robert de Boer attended high School in Australia and in the Netherlands. Robert was trained as an aerospace engineer at Delft University of Technology. He majored in man-machine systems and graduated cum laude on the thresholds of the vestibular organ. Robert joined Unilever to focus on operational improvements at several manufacturing sites. In 1995 he turned to consulting at A.T. Kearney. Four years later he transferred to Fokker Aerostructures (now Fokker Technologies) to develop the Program Management methodology in compliance with aerospace requirements as a prerequisite for Fokker to participate on the A380 program. Subsequently in the role of Director of Engineering he supported and guided an increasing number of engineers (up to 300) occupied in a large number of new design projects across the globe. Robert experimented with several team facilitations and interventions during the course of his work at Fokker, leading to a PhD in May 2012 from the Delft University of Technology for his work on Cognitive Resistance. Since September 2009 he is also appointed as a part-time lector of Aviation Engineering at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. His research interests there are in the field of human factors and safety, as well as lean implementations at maintenance companies and optimal use of sensor data. Robert is married, has four children and lives in Zeist (the Netherlands). Robert can be reached at
[email protected]. About his presentation: ”Automation surprise is the phenomenon that cockpit crews are surprised by actions taken (or not taken) by the aircraft computers. Increasingly, incidents and accidents are attributed to automation surprise. In this presentation we will look at what constitutes an automation surprise, and which factors can be influenced to mitigate the risks associated with automation in the cockpit. Progress of research on this topic within the aviation research group at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences is presented, as well as findings from the presenter’s recent PhD thesis on cognitive resilience.”

Christiaan Lubbers / Air Traffic Control the Netherlands Date of birth: 11 October 1984 Education 2003 – 2008:
Cognitive Psychology – Leiden University
Job experience 2008–2012: Procedure expert at Air Traffic Control the Netherlands Current:
Human Factors/Training expert at Air Traffic Control the Netherlands
Presentation: Incidents & Human Factors within ATC About his presentation: “Within aviation, Air Traffic Control is responsible for facilitating a safe, orderly and expeditious flow of controlled air traffic. Even though ATC is greatly supported by an ever-growing array of highly sophisticated surveillance, planning and conflict detection systems, it is still the human that is ´connecting the dots´. Unfortunately, the human error remains the primary contributor to aviation incidents and accidents. The aims of this presentation are to i) describe the human factor within ATC, ii) explain why the underlying human errors are not odd or foolish but actually quite logical and predictable, and iii) elaborate on how human (controller) error is attempted to be eliminated within ATC the Netherlands by analysing ATC procedures and systems design.”

Presentation 15 December : The competition in the Aviation industry is greater than before. For both airlines and MRO companies in Western Europe dark clouds are rising in the East. How can we hold our positions or even improve them? That is only possible when the RIGHT decisions are made! No decisions based on gut feelings, male intuition or Fingerspitzengefühl, hereby the risk is too large that it will be the wrong decision. With Data driven decision making the RIGHT decisions can be made! How do you do that? You will learn it in this presentation: it’s about our future!

Stefaan Ghijs / Founder at Fly Aeolus Stefaan Ghijs graduated as a Master of Science at the faculty of Aerospace Engineering, Delft University of Technology, within the chair Aerospace Management and Operations. At Stork Aerospace AESP he cooperated within the strategy setup towards Boeing Commercial Airplanes’ 787 project, the Dreamliner project. This strategy was set-up from a supply chain and production point of view. He gained knowledge in the setup of airlines, primarily in regulations and the (initial) organization structure, which was fundamental for its consultancy work for a new Dutch cargo airline start-up. His vision on the aviation industry is based on a functional increasing demand for efficient, individual and personal air transport in Europe; conditioned towards a short and intermediate range. With regards to the strong growth in the personal air transport market, he cooperated in the policymaking within Eurocontrol’s “VLJ Integration Platform”, the Dutch Ministry of Transport and EU's “Small Air Transport (SAT) - Roadmap” project; next to his entrepreneurial Air Taxi work. Stefaan also teaches at the Delft University of Technology, IATA and Cap Gemini the subject Airline Management and Operations and supervises research projects with KLM, Kenya Airways, Belle Air and more through Delft University.
