SPLASH ZONE PROTECTION PT S B S
Splash zone protection of offshore structures requires special consideration. The common method of using a heavy duty coating and corrosion allowance raises questions regarding corrosion rate and duration of the coating. Furthermore, possible repair must be considered. Among our platforms operating in the North Sea there are eight with steel jackets, five steel floaters and two concrete structures. The corrosion protection is designed for the lifetime, which varies from 20 to 40 years. The "splash zone,” that area immediately above and below the mean water level, has long been of major concern to design and corrosion engineers of offshore installations. Tides cause the water level to rise and fall, alternately wetting and drying exposed metal surfaces, such as offshore oil and gas platform legs and risers. The brackish water and exposure to oxygen is corrosive, the wave action is constantly eroding the metal members and debris and boats come in contact with the metal to cause damage. Most common areas affected are riser clamps, J-Tubes, bends, spools, (Vortex Induced Vibration) VIV Suppression Strakes, and pipe field joint. The metal which is constantly submerged can usually be protected by cathodic means, but that won’t work in the "splash zone” because the water level is constantly changing. The areas well above the "splash zone,” which are exposed only to atmosphere, can be protected with various paints and zinc coatings, but must be reapplied when necessary. But protecting the "splash zone” with traditional above and below the "splash zone” solutions have proven unsatisfactory. Monel jackets welded to the metal surface; special coatings and sprayed-on paint; and even making the metal components thicker, of course, are not effective in the "splash zone.” The criteria for successful "splash zone” protection consists of the following requirements: Metal surface isolation – metal must be isolated and separated from the environment High electrical resistance – coating should inhibit electrolytic corrosion and resist electrical current flow. High impact resistance – protect against and resist buffeting from boats and floating debris Flexible – won’t crack under the distortion of pipe bends or twists Bio-fouling resistant– isolate metal from sea life, fungus and scale attack Good thermal insulation – important in the case of flow lines Guaranteed for life – should last virtually the life of the installation

SPLASH ZONE PROTECTION PT S B S
Splash Zone Protection System secured with bolted system stops corrosion in harsh marine environments by using a uniquely formulated combination of petrolatum-based STACprime marine, STACfill and STACwrap marine tape when protected by HDPE Outercovers. Ideal for the corrosion protection of offshore risers, steel and concrete wharf piles in the splash and tidal zones. Splash Pro Series seals out water and oxygen effectively with proven suitability for corrosion protection in aggressive marine environments. Splash Pro Series is designed with a tough outercover specially for exposed conditions to protect against weathering and mechanical damage. Splash Pro Series forms an anticorrosion membrane by displacing seawater with a moisture resistant bond.

CATHODIC PROTECTION IN STEEL CONCRETE PT S B S
Under normal conditions the reinforcement steel in concrete is protected by a coating of Ironhydroxide (Fe(OH)2), impenetrable to oxygen, the so-called passivation layer, which can be only formed on steel in an alkaline environment with an alkalinity above pH ~ 9,5. Healthy concrete has a pH of 12 to 13, mainly caused by the presence of sodium, potassium and calcium-hydroxides in the porewater solution of the concrete. Depending on the oxygen and humidity content of the concrete this passive layer can be further oxidized into magnetite (Fe3O4) and at higher oxygen contents additionally hematite (Fe2O3), but still being insoluble layers promoting passivity of the steel surface. We can conclude that a layer of concrete or any cement-containing layer on steel with at least a pH of 9.5 act as a protecting or passivating environment for the steel.
“Pitting” of post-tensioned cables in a bridge deck due to de-icing salts.
Corrosion of steel in concrete As shortly mentioned in the page before due its porous and inhomogeneous nature of concrete aggressive ions like chlorides areable to accumulate locally into relatively high concentrations and form so-called concentration cells. These concentration cells on its turn form very locally strong potential differences on the steel surface causing corrosion cells. These locally potential differences is the electromotive force (emf) or the “driving voltage” for any kind of corrosion.
Titanium Ribbon Mesh Anode CP System For Above Ground and Water Reinforced Concrete Structures
Zinc Layer Anode A cathodic protection system which utilizes ZLA is a galvanic system. Zinc has a more negative electro-potential than steel, so the ZLA naturally provides the currents to treat the cause of corrosion of steel in concrete. Unlike impressed current systems, ZLA is fully self-powered and selfregulating, providing the proper current to maintain steel polarization. It requires no external power source, no costly electrical work and no monthly monitoring. ADVANTAGES Effectiveness: ZLA stops corrosion by placing steel in concrete in a protected cathodic state. Stopping corrosion helps prevent concrete deterioration. Versatility: The ZLA system can be applied to the top, sides, or bottom surfaces of concrete structures of various shapes and any sizes. Economy: The ZLA system requires minimal maintenance over its long life. If desired, performance can be monitored easily by on-site personnel.

LAMINATED ZINC TAPE PT S B S
ISOZIN Corrosion control made easy using laminated zinc tape. Isozin Zinc Tape provides a corrosion control solution to new and existing above ground plant and transport systems. The main features are: · Economical · Many applications · Easy to apply · Proven product · Long lasting
THE PRODUCT The product consists of a zinc-tape of high purity (99.99% of the chemical mass of zinc) with a nominal thickness of 0.080 mm. This tape is supplied with an adhesive of a nominal thickness of 0.025 mm, which can resist a continuou operating temperature of 80° C and which reacts under electro-conductive pressure. The adhesive layer is covered by a silicone paper tape, which protects the band from getting damaged or polluted until the moment the tape is applied. The product is available in two forms: · on rolls, whose width and length are shown in the table below · in shapes, based on the client’s needs
TECHNICAL FEATURES The product is designed to cover the surface of iron, steel, aluminium and light alloys in order to protect them from corrosion. This is achieved by applying the Isozin Zinc Tape at the correct pressure to the surface that needs to be protected from corrosion. The adhesive layer, which is applied only on one side of the zinc tape, consists of a matrix of adhesive and a percentage of zinc powder. The addition of zinc particles into the adhesive renders the Zinc Tape foil electrically continuous with the substrate. The electrical bond between the surface that needs to be protected and the Zinc Tape ensures that the Zinc Tape can act as a galvanic anode
TYPICAL APPLICATIONS Use of zinc tape with electro-conductive adhesive against corrosion

INDIRECT ASSESMENT DIRECT CURRENT VOLTAGE GRADIENT (DCVG)
PT S B S
Direct Current Voltage Gradient (DCVG) Survey is a survey technique to evaluate the coating condition on buried pipelines. The principle of this technique involves detecting a voltage difference on the earth surface just above the buried pipeline by using two or more portable reference electrodes separated by a short distance. In a DCVG Survey, a DC Signal is typically created by interrupting the pipeline's Cathodic Protection current, and the voltage gradient in the soil above the pipeline is measured. Voltage gradients arise as a result of current pickup/discharge at coating defect locations.
- Above Ground Survey - Coating Defect Location - Foreign Contact Location - Coating Defect Severity
CLOSE INTERVAL POTENCIAL SURVEY (CIPS)
Close Interval Potential Survey (CIPS) is a survey technique that provides a detailed continuous pipe to soil potential profile. In normal operation, Pipe to Soil Potentials measured only at test points. When measuring a potential at one location (test point), the amount of pipe sampled in the measurement is considered the length of the pipe encompassed by a 120° arc entered on the reference electrode. To determine the potential over the entire pipeline surface require that the reference electrode be moved along the centerline of the pipe route and place at regular intervals (@ every 2m). The purpose of a Close interval Potential Survey (CIPS) is to evaluate the criteria of the cathodic protection, to identify local deficiencies in a cathodic protection system, to assist in identifying the causes of such deficiencies, and to aid in determining the requirements to enhance the level of cathodic protection to the structure. Assess adequacy of Cathodic Protection System Stray Current identification Above ground survey Able to detect interference from foreign structure Pipe-to-soil potential readings between test station does not accurately reflect the pipe potential between test station. CIPS takes potential readings at interval of 2 meters. There are measurement error when taking potential with current flowing, known as IR error. To overcome IR error, TRs are interrupted using GPS Current Interrupter, true pipeline potential are taken when current stops flowing.

INDIRECT ASSESMENT PIPELINE CURRENT MAPPING (PCM)
PT S B S
Pipeline Current Mapping (PCM) is relatively new technology in locating faults and poor coating that is draining CP Currents, resulting in pipelines not adequately protected by its CP system. The PCM advantage over traditional DCVG Survey is mainly on its ability to conduct survey for pipelines buried under Concrete and Road Surface. It detects accurately the location of faults when conducted by highly trained operators. The PCM machine also comes with A-Frame which can be used to perform CIPS Survey. • Detect exact location of buried pipelines • Detection of Coating Defect location • Most acceptable method for pipelines buried under tarmac and concrete • Above ground survey

between the outer pins. The resistance can be measured and the resistivity calculated according to the formula. It should be noted that measurements made in this manner indicate average resistivity over a depth of soil corresponding to the spacing between adjacent pins.
The Wenner Four-Pin Method for measuring soil resistivity
- Measurement using Wenner 4 Pin Method - Soil resistance is measured and resistivity is calculated - Soil resistivity is an indication of how corrosive the local soil conditions above ground survey

SURVEY FOR NEARSHORE PT S B S
METHOD STATEMENT Inspection utilizing two reference electrodes has been widely accepted by the oil & gas industries all over the world to inspect their vast network of subsea pipelines. It has several advantages over other methods; Low Cost Does not involved expensive Remote Controlled underwater vehicle Does not required divers No trailing wire that may caused problems to other vessels During the survey, the boat position will be aligned with a pre-set DGPS coordinates of the subsea pipelines. Through this method, the subsea pipeline can be traced down to its entire length with higher accuracy. With the DGPS system in place, there is no requirement to use marking buoy along the subsea pipelines route. As mentioned, divers are not required for this inspection method. To bring the reference electrode as close as possible to the pipeline, the reference electrode will be weighted using concrete. The reference electrode, Silver-Silver Chloride will be housed in a heavy concrete casing weighted approximately 60kg. This heavy concrete casing is meant to minimize drifting during survey. It will also bring the reference electrode as close as possible to the pipeline. Prior to the start of the survey, an array of coordinate points spaced at 200 meters interval from one chainage to another will be plotted on the DGPS screen. These pre-set coordinates will be used as guidance for the boat driver to navigate in a zigzag format to cross perpendicularly with the pipelines. Data collected through this method will be more comprehensive and accurate. At every crossing point with the subsea pipeline, the weighted reference electrode (RE-2) will be released to the bottom of the sea, at the same time, another set of reference electrode (RE1) will be lowered to the seawater but its depth is approximately 1 meter only. At this point, potential difference between the two electrodes will start to drift. Once the measurement is stable, the reading will be recorded using datalogger, if not manually. Subsequently, the weighted reference electrode will be lifted up approximately 2 meters using the boat winch.

AC/DC STRAY CURRENT & MITIGATION PT S B S
Stray currents in a rail transit environment may consist of direct current components associated with the operation of dc electric traction systems and alternating current components associated with the operation of ac electric traction systems and electric utility systems. The impact on the infrastructure will be different for the unidirectional flow of iron ions from a structural steel element due to dc stray currents than for the flow of iron ions from a structural steel element on one half-cycle and the reversal of current into the structural steel element on the other half-cycle due to ac stray currents. The consideration of this issue will yield functional and economic benefits in designing stray current mitigation measures that are commensurate with the electrical environment.

ROYSTON HANDY CAP PT S B S
CORROSION PROTECTION FOR PIN BRAZED OR EXOTHERMIC CONNECTIONS Usage: The ROYSTON HANDY CAP 2 is easily applied and economical. It may be used on all anode cable and test cable connections. Royston Handy Cap 2 is especially useful for welds on mill coated pipe where only a small part of the coating has been removed to allow installation of the grounding connections.
Features: 1.
A to p plastic sheet formed with an igloo shaped dome and entry tunnel for the cable.
2.
A s pecial elastomeric compound in the plastic dome, which is firm enough to resist flow at all normally encountered application and operation temperatures, but soft enough to mould itself around and completely cover the irregular welded profile.
3.
Oneither side of the dome are double rows of parallel serrations to increase flexibility and assist with conforming around small diameter pipe.
4.
A ba se of Royston Tac-Tape, a black unbacked elastomeric tape with exceptional adhesive properties, for bonding firmly to the metal surface, when used with Royston Roybond 747 primer.
The ROYSTON HANDY CAP 2 is a prefabricated assembly specifically designed for Cathodic Protection connections to pipes tanks and other structures. When pressed by hand into position, it forms a thick, highly resistant electrical insulation seal over the weld, the end of the cable and the surrounding prepared area.
ORDERING INFORMATION: ROYSTON HANDY CAP 2 is packed 24 per carton. (Shipping Weight is 5 lbs) Royston R oybond 74 7 Pr imer is av ailable in : 1 ) .........6 US Fluid Ounce (177ml) Aerosols - sufficient for 12 caps 2) .........16 US Fluid Ounce (472ml) Aerosols - sufficient for 30 caps 3) . .......1 US Quart (944ml) Cans - sufficient for 200 caps

DATASHEET 1.1
ROYSTON HANDY CAP PT S B S
STEP 1: Clean all mud, dirt, grease, oil and other contaminants from the metal surface and any part of the mill applied coating which is to be covered. Apply a coat of Royston ROYBOND 747 PRIMER and allow to dry to a matt appearance, which will take about 5 minutes, depending on humidity and temperature.
ST E P 2 : R e m o v e t h e r e l e a s e paper from the bottom of the ROYSTON HANDY CAP 2. Bend the plastic sheet inwards at the serrations when applying to small diameter pipe. Position and place the Handy Cap on the welded area with the tunnel over the cable.
ST E P 3 : P u s h t h e d o m e o f t h e cap firmly into the weld area. Now lift the cable away from the pipe and squeeze the black rubber compound completely around and underneath it. Push the cable back down on the pipe and press the elastomeric compound into firm contact with the pipe over the entire area.
No further protection is necessary when ROYSTON HANDY CAP 2 covers the entire exposed metal area. Uncovered areas should be protected by applying tape or mastic, such as ROYSTON GREENLINE TAPE or ROYSTON ROSKOTE MASTIC. When coating or wrapping the ROYSTON HANDY CAP 2, remove the narrow strips of plastic release film on the top of the cap. This will assure maximum protection by effecting a positive waterproof seal.

THE SOLID-STATE POLARIZATION CELL REPLACEMENT PCR: For Class I, Div. 2, Zone 2 And Non-hazardous Location PCRH : For Clas I, Div. 1 Locations
INTRODUCTION: PCR/PCRH The Polariza on Cell Replacement (PCR) is a solid-state device commonly used in conjunc on with cathodically protected structures. This product is an ideal replacement for electrochemical polariza on cells because the solid-state design eliminates the maintenance requirements and the poten ally hazardous electrolytes associated with polariza on cells. Furthermore, the opera ng parameters offer a number of dis nct advantages. Because the device has a higher DC blocking voltage, one device can o en replace two or more polariza on cells. The product is easy to apply because its opera ng parameters are precisely defined. This product is available in two different versions to most economically accommodate the two different hazardous loca on lis ngs which are available. In many applica ons, these products are used in a hazardous loca on; hence, the reason for hazardous loca on lis ngs. All model numbers with a PCR prefix are listed for use in Class I, Division 2, Groups A, B, C, and D hazardous loca ons per NFPA 70 (the U.S. Na onal Electric code) and for Zone 2 loca ons per En50021. All model numbers with a PCRH prefix are listed for Class I, Division 1, Groups C and D hazardous loca ons. These products prevent the flow of DC current when the absolute voltage (i.e., the DC plus peak AC voltage) across the terminals is between -3.0 volts and + 1.0 volt while simultaneously providing a grounding (or coupling) path for steady-state AC current, if AC current is present. A symmetrical version, which blocks +/-2.0 volts is available as an op on. Custom versions with other voltage blocking levels will be considered upon request. These products also provide over-voltage protec on to both lightning and AC fault current. TYPICAL APPLICATIONS: PCR/PCRH • Over-Voltage Protec on of Insulated Joints • Mi ga on of Induced AC Voltage • Blocking Stray DC Voltage • AC Grounding and DC Isola on of CathodicallyProtectedElectrical Equipment (such as Motor-Operated Valves) • DC Isola on of Cathodically Protected Equipment from Power U lity Grounding Systems • Over-Voltage Protec on of Equipment from AC Faults, Lightning, and Switching Transients RATING INFORMATION REQUIRED: PCR/PCRH The following informa on is required for each applica on in order to select the appropriate product ra ng. 1) The AC fault current available to flow through the device under a fault condi on. (This will o en be less than the total fault current available). 2) The steady-state AC current available to flow through the device while blocking the flow of DC current. 3) The DC blocking voltage required. 4) The hazardous loca on lis ng required for the planned installa on loca on. If not applicable, or if a Class I, Division 2 loca on applies, select a PCR model. If a Class I, Division 1 loca on applies, select a PCRH model 5) The environmental ra ng of the enclosure. Items (1) and (2) on previous page will not apply in all applica ons. ELECTRICAL RATINGS: PCR/PCRH The following ra ngs apply both to the PCR and PCRH unless otherwise noted. Understanding 60 Hz Fault Current To select the correct fault current ra ng, it is necessary to know how much AC fault current is available to flow through the PCR or PCRH in the event of an AC fault. Faults from the Primary (Power U lity) System If the PCR or PCRH is used to mi gate AC voltage on a pipeline that is in the same corridor as an electrical transmission line, the PCR or PCRH could be subject to AC fault current from the transmission line in the event of a lineto- ground fault. For safety, the PCR or PCRH allows all current to pass immediately to ground with minimal voltage drop across the terminals (i.e., less than 10 volts under maximum rated fault current). When the fault condi on has cleared, the PCR or PCRH returns to its normal opera ng mode, which passes low level steady-state AC current (if present) while blocking the flow of DC current. Another example is when the PCR or PCRH is installed across an insulated joint to provide over-voltage protec on from lightning and AC faults. In this case, the product protects the joint by passing all AC current through the PCR or PCRH around the insula ng joint while limi ng the voltage across the joint insula on. A er the fault or lightning event, the device automa cally returns to its normal mode of blocking the flow of DC current. Faults from the Secondary (User) System For example, consider a PCR or PCRH used to provide AC grounding and DC isola on for an item of electrical equipment that is an integral part of a cathodically protected pipeline (e.g., a motor- operated valve). If the equipment has an electrical short-circuit, the PCR or PCRH allows all current to flow through itself to ground, thus grounding the fault. The amount of available secondary fault current can be calculated from the data on the transformer nameplate (kVA ra ng, the % transformer impedance, and the transformer secondary voltage) using the informa on in the next sec on.
