ABSTRACT Lariva Mantika. K2212044. IMPROVING THE STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY USING SONGS (An Action Research at the Fifth Grade Students of SDIT Luqman Al Hakim in the Academic Year 2015/2016). Thesis, Surakarta: Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Sebelas Maret University, 2016. The research aims to know (1) can the use of songs improve the students’ vocabulary mastery and (2) what are the students’ attitudes toward the use of songs to improve their vocabulary mastery. The population of this research was the fifth grade students of SDIT Luqman Al Hakim Mojosongo, Surakarta. 5A class was selected as the subject of the classroom action research. It was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The qualitative data were collected through interview, observation, documentation and diary; whereas the quantitative data were collected by conducting test. The result shows that (1) the use of songs could improve the students’ vocabulary mastery. The improvement of students’ achievement is shown in the vocabulary mastery test which had developed mean score. The mean score of vocabulary mastery test increased from 52.06 in the pre-test, 66.84 in test 1, and 77.61 in the post-test. (2) The students’ attitude toward the use of songs to improve their vocabulary mastery is: a) all the students pay attention to the lesson without did improper activity; b) all the students get enthusiastically involved in the songs activities. Song is an alternative teaching method that benefits both to students’ achievement and students’ attitude toward the learning activity. As the suggestion, the teacher should consider Song as an interesting and appropriate teaching media to teach language, especially English. Based on such findings as presents above, it is also hoped that Song can be implemented in teaching other English skill. Keywords: vocabulary mastery, songs, classroom action research

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui (1) bisakah pengunaan lagu meningkatkan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris siswa dan (2) seperti apa sikap siswa terhadap penggunaan lagu untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris mereka. Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas lima SDIT Luqman Al Hakim Mojosongo, Suirakarta. Kelas VA dipilih sebagai subjek penelitian tindakan kelas ini. Penelitian dilakukan dalam 2 siklus. Setiap siklus terdiri dari: perencanaan, tindakan, observasi dan refeksi. Data kualitatif di kumpulkan dari wawancara, observasi, dokumentasi dan catatan harian, selain itu data kuantitatif didapatkan dari . diadakannya test Hasil dari penelitian menunjukan bahwa (1) penggunaan lagu dapat meningkatkan penguasaan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris siswa. Peningkatan pencapaian siswa terlihat dari tes penguasaan kosa kata yang mengalami peningkatan pada nilai rata-rata. Nilai rata-rata siswa meningkat dari 52,06 pada hasil pre-test, 66,84 pada hasil test 1 dan 77,61 pada hasil post-test. (2) sikap siswa terhadap penggunaan lagu untuk meningkatkan penguasaan kosa kata Bahasa Inggris mereka antara lain: a) seluruh siswa memperhatikan pada saat pembelajaran berlangsung tanpa melakukan aktifitas lain yang tidak berkaitan dengan pembelajaran; b) seluruh siswa antusias terlibat dalam aktifitas pembelajaran dengan lagu. Lagu adalah sebuah media pengajaran alternatif yang bermanfat untuk pencapaian akademik siswa dan sikap siswa terhadap aktifitas pembelajaran. Sebagai saran, guru seharusnya mempertimbangkan lagu sebagai sebuah media pembelajaran yang menarik dan cocok untuk mengajar bahasa, khususnya Bahasa Inggris. Berdasarkan temuan seperti yang disajikan di atas, juga diharapkan jika lagu dapat diterapkan pada pembelajaran untuk mempelajari keterampilan berbahasa Inggris yang lainnya. kata kunci: penguasaan kosa kata, lagu, penelitian tindakan kelas.
