The Transferium ‘Extra Transferia Northern-Holland for nineteen million kilometre reduction’, is the headline of an article in the ‘Verkeerskunde’ Journal of March 13, 2004. These recent developments are the results of a successful pilot in 1993, developed by the ministry of Traffic in cooperation with the Dutch roadservice (ANWB) and transportcompanies at nine locations in the Netherlands. The purpose of this pilot was to improve the approachability and the quality of life of cities and other areas. The general character of this goal at the exterior level must speak to the individual, because the traveller needs to be persuaded to park his car at the Transferium and transfer to public transport into the city. When this becomes attractive for many travellers, the concept will be a success and there will be investments at other locations. The idea to create cities where every square centimetre is not dedicated to cater for cars seems to move from utopia to reality with this plan. The current transferia offers the possibility to transfer safely, fast and comfortably from car to public transport, like train, subway, tram, bus or boat. Safely means that cars and people are under constant surveillance from camera’s. Fast means that the transfer is well organised with little time loss and frequent and fast public transport. Comfortable means a covered walkway between the parking lot and the boarding area, heated waiting areas with restrooms, phones and travel information. Usually there are bicycle stands and a kiosk as well. At the greater transferia there are even more facilities, like a cityinformation-centre and a cafe. Each of these functions requires a specific design for the outside space of these locations. Most of the transferia are on the edge of cities were highway and public transport meet and many cars have the same destination. Because of the accessible location traffic jams and parking trouble can be avoided. At transferium Ridderkerk you can park your car for free and transfer to the Fast Ferry for Rotterdam or Dordrecht’s city centre. The location is favourable for cars coming through highways A15 and A16 en she offers a beautiful view of the junction between rivers Noord, Lek and New Maas. The free parking and the magnificent view should satisfy visitors, because other facilities as mentioned above are absent. The place looks cheap, grey and static. This would mean that the Transferium goal is not met in Ridderkerk. The design from Zwarts & Jansma (1999) shows how these comfortable facilities can be fitted into the transferium. It looks modern, comfortable, but the location is still not very dynamic.

In contrast with Transferium Ridderkerk, which exudes peace and simplicity and does not fully live up to the goal yet, is the urban and busy transferium Amsterdam Arena. This transferium has more to offer than parking (below the Arena grass) and transferring alone. A big commercial boulevard runs through the location and offers shopping, sports and leisure. The surrounding has fully absorbed the transferium. Because of multiple use of space the location does not seem to have boundaries and so she is used optimally. The outside space adapted itself to this urban use, there are benches, lampposts and bicycle parking facilities everywhere. Is this integration the potential value of transferia? Are they urban junctions? Or are they isolated islands in the landscape?

If a place can be defined as relational, historical and concerned with identity, then a space which cannot be defined as relational, or historical, or concerned with identity will be a non-place’ (Augé 1995: 77, 78). Marc Augé schrijft hierover: ‘We could say, conversely, that the act of passing gives a particular status to place names, that the faultline resulting from the law of the other, and causing a loss of focus, is the horizon of every journey (accumulation of places, negotion of place), and that the movements that ‘shift lines’ and traverses places is, by definition, creative of itineraries: that is, words and non-places’ (Augé 1995: 85).

Transferium as non-place Marc Augé writes is his book ‘Non-places’: ‘If a place can be defined as relational, historical and concerned with identity, then a space which cannot be defined as relational, or historical, or concerned with identity will be a non-place’ (Augé 1995: 77, 78). Marc Augé creates the concept of ‘places’ and ‘non-places’. The ‘places’ have an anthropological meaning; they are social spaces full of monuments which continue in time and generation, like a historical city centre with it’s own identity and history. But these untouched places get their true meaning through change and discontinuity in the space. This contemporary world creates the opposite of ‘places’, the uncompleted ‘non-places’. These non-places are part of society. Marc Augé says: ‘non-places are the real measure of our time’ (Augé 1995: 79), the super modernity produces them and the number of non-places is ever growing. There are more and more uninhabited places, bigger transportnetworks, a growing world of commercial and communication through machines. This makes a dynamic world with day to day migration of entire populations through junctions and routes where they try to go from A to B. The examples Augé mentions of non-places, like highways, the railroad, airports, trainstations, hotel chains, amusement parks, supermarkets and transport means, can be joined by the transferium. The transferia are also anonymous places where an individual loses oneself; there is no identity, no history and no relationship between passers-by and location. One is lost in the temporary dynamic flow. The spaces where one travels towards a destination seem to be the archetype of the non-place. The flowing movement of entering and leaving transferia by individuals marks the location as a nonplace. Augé says that: ‘We could say, conversely, that the act of passing gives a particular status to place names, that the fault line resulting from the law of the other, and causing a loss of focus, is the horizon of every journey (accumulation of places, negation of place), and that the movements that ‘shift lines’ and traverses places is, by definition, creative of itineraries: that is, words and non-places’ (Augé 1995: 85). This is why non-places have a certain stature when they are transferia. They exist and their outside space is used in short frequent bursts by daily travelers.

The link between individuals and their surroundings in the space of non-place is established through the mediation of words, or even texts’ (Augé 1995: 94). Marc Augé schrijft hierover: ‘Words and images in transit through non-places can take root in the –still diverse- places where people still try to construct part of their daily life’ (Augé 1995: 109).

Information design Non-places are defined by the use of words and pictures. They form the manual for these transit places, like Augé states: ‘The link between individuals and their surroundings in the space of non-place is established through the mediation of words, or even texts’ (Augé 1995: 94). The information can be provided in different formats, but mostly they are panels along the route. There are however examples where the information is absorbed in the design of the location. The parking garage of the Hotel Puerta de América in Madrid, designed by Teresa Sapey, uses information in the form of icons. Theses icons, constructed from the work ‘Liberté’ of the French poet Paul Éluard, tell you where the exit is and point you in the right direction. Other icons don’t give information about the garage itself, but express freedom. The whole of design and text of the symbols gives the road to freedom, it draws a symbolic contrast with the dark underground lot. Another example is the 10-mile spiral, an idea for Las Vegas by Aranda/Lasch. With the goal to avoid traffic jams and to ‘de-jam’ Las Vegas, the architects have designed a structure/building where the arrival of the drivers is slowed by their movement in the spiral. On the lane, they have used texts from well known signs along the Las Vegas roads, like ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ and ‘Drive Safely’. This is not the only form of information the architects have added to their design. To give the spiral a symbolic relationship with Las Vegas, the gambling capital of the world, the architects have used numbers, colors and amounts of money on the lanes of the spiral to introduce the ‘slow’ drivers to gambling in Vegas. The information of words and pictures on the non-place can make sure that the non-place gets a spot in the rhythm of daily life. Marc Augé writes: ‘Words and images in transit through non-places can take root in the –still diverse- places where people still try to construct part of their daily life’ (Augé 1995: 109). A design by Buschow Henley Architects illustrates how close daily life and non-place can get. In their idea ‘Park+Jog’ a form of daily life is constructed by using a transferpoint. Through symbols, people are encouraged to park their car at the end of the highway, then change clothes and jog, swim, walk or take a horse ride to Manchester City. After a hard day of work or classes people can jog back, take a refreshing shower at the roof terrace of the car park and drive home.

In the non-places of supermodernity, there is always a specific position...But they play no part in any synthesis , they are not integrated with anything; they simple bear witness, during a journey, to the coexistence of distinct individualities, perceived as equivalent and unconnected...; it deals only with individuals, but they are indentified (name, occupation, place of birth, address) only on entering or leaving’ (Augé 1995: 110).
12.
Transferia locations While the city plays a prominent role in daily life, transferia and park&rides are forgotten places. But these places could use their location between city and highway. The city is like an interior, where people return through the entrance every time. The entrance could be a transfer point in the form of a transferium or park&ride, a link between the city with its public transfer network and suburbia with her roads for private vehicles. The entrance should fit the interior and it should be inviting to the world. An entrance between an inner and outer space has two sides and can have different looks on the inside and outside. The transfer point is a neutral point on the map with a temporary use. This abstract character makes it hard to integrate these spaces with their surroundings. This point should absorb the qualities of the entrance to really function as a dynamic doorway and to give entering and leaving a flowing shape. According to Augé, this identifies the non-place in the location: ‘In the nonplaces of supermodernity, there is always a specific position...But they play no part in any synthesis , they are not integrated with anything; they simple bear witness, during a journey, to the coexistence of distinct individualities, perceived as equivalent and unconnected...; it deals only with individuals, but they are indentified (name, occupation, place of birth, address) only on entering or leaving’ (Augé 1995: 110). It can be concluded that in designing a tranferium, a lot of attention should go to entering and leaving the location. These movements should be both recognisable and appealing to the individual. The design can create a relationship between passer-by and location. According to Gilles Deleuze the design of the material and the texture of the connection are the most important. In his piece ‘The Fold’, he links a typical house to baroque. (Deleuze 2006: the pleats of matter). The two floors are linked through flowing folds. These folds determine and materialise the shape. Comparing to a transferium, the ground floor can be compared to suburbia. One big collection of different factors: people, landscape, provisions, the infrastructure under a low density. The top floor can be associated with the city: compact and designed to the very detail. The ‘folds’ that run through the Transferium must form a fluent motion and create a link between the public space of the city and the vast open space of suburbia. The design of this link is crucial. The creation of a fluent transfer, as to make this transfer as natural as possible, is a starting point transferia seem to need.
‘Now I know that this is only one of the roads which is open for me on that morning in Dorotea’, schrijft Italo Calvino (Calvino 1995: onzichtbare steden).

‘Now I know that this is only one of the roads which is open for me on that morning in Dorotea’, writes Italo Calvino (Calvino 1995: invisible cities). The city, with its delta of routes to the sea of suburbia, offers different possibilities to undertake a daily trip to and from the city. People can take different routes and forms of transport. An easy and quick transfer is off course necessary for this to work. Positive impulses are needed to use a Transferium. The architect Lars Spuybroek shows in his piece ‘Machining Architecture’ that perception and action are dependent. So the solution lies not in the creation of new possibilities for the movement, but in how to deal with perception, in this case the perception of the Transferium. According to this statement the city consumer can be influenced through design anticipating on the perception/experience of the consumer. This perception/ experience can be approached from different angles. There is a transfer from the urban public space to the vast space of suburbia. The entering and leaving can be designed in the form of a natural gesture to the traveller.

Status and appearance The passing-through places like highways haven’t always carried the non-place status. Highway entrepreneurs from the mid twentieth century had a view that was the complete opposite of non-places. The German autobahn was intended to be a cultural aesthetic monument, which would arouse nationalist feelings in the citizens, a place with identity and background. They strived to a strong relationship with the landscape. The parkway is another example of this view, a ‘humane’ road as part of nature. Sloping and supple following the language of the land. ‘There must be an unobstructed freedom of movement and a pliable traffic flow, which can be maintained regularly. This should flow without interruption or collision’ (Nijenhuis & van Winden 2007: 82). The lanes offer the driver the landscape. When a driver speeds along the lanes new images reveal themselves to him/her. ‘The driver experiences the spaces of the landscape like an exciting succession of wide and narrow views’, writes Hans Lorentz in ‘Die Mitarbeit de lebendigen Natur’. The subtly designed landscape rooms guide the driver through the landscape and play to a sublime experience without active interaction of the consciousness. The beauty of the road lies in the rhythm of the change in space and the rhythm becomes a feeling of tension and relaxation (Nijenhuis & van Winden 2007: 134). These roads and highways however, could not satisfy the quickly rising demand of mobility. And as Wilfried van Winden states: ‘landscapes urbanize and the cities are like parasites to the highway network’ (Nijenhuis & van Winden 2007: 83). These roads function as a representation machine alone. Nowadays, the highways are no longer part of the aesthetic culture. This also goes for highway parking spaces and transferia / park&rides. Why are these dynamic spaces not appreciated? How can these ‘in cultural aspect neglected’ non-places get aesthetic qualities again? According to Wilfried van Winden is de Pheripherique the contemporary urban highway. She is tempestuous and dynamic, she could be called the diabolical highway. A never constructed design for a parking lot over the river Seine by the architect Konstantin S. Melnikov from 1925 has both dynamics and representation. The dynamic structure of steep slopes and parking decks offer the motorist a spectacular view of the Seine. Melnikov wanted to please the user with his design.

Marc Augé schrijft: ‘Without the monumental illusion before the eyes of the living, history would be a mere abstraction’ (Augé 1995: 60). ‘The notions of itinerary, intersection, centre and movement are useful not only for the description of traditional anthropological places. They can also be applied to contemporary French space, urban space in particular. Paradoxically, they even enable us to characterize it as a specific space although, by definition, they are criteria of comparison’ (Augé 1995: 64).

A spectacular view can be a means to make a transferium representative. OMA however, has played to dramatics in her L’Espace Piranésien design (part of the masterplan for Euralille). Their challenge was to create a Gordian knot out of a small junction where metro, train, highway and sidewalks cross eachother. A mixture of slopes, elevators, escalators and railroad tracks where used to make the Eurostar station as dramatic as possible. Dramatics is also visible on the areal photo of the park with pool and metro station Nus de la Trinitat. This was opened in 1990 in Barcelona and designed by Enric Batlle. An enormous nexus of roads circumvents a reasonably small park, which seems to have adjusted itself to it’s surroundings. But when one enters the park, the roads are hardly present. The place makes a silent monumental impression, the pool seems from a fascistic age. Marc Augé mentions that: ‘Without the monumental illusion before the eyes of the living, history would be a mere abstraction’ (Augé 1995: 60). At Parc Nus de la Trinitat, the architect seems to have played to the monumental illusion. This makes the place an impressive non-place, which is hard to characterise.

‘Since non-places are there to be passes through, they are measured in units of time’, schrijft Marc Augé (Augé 1995: 104).

Time-Space experience Not only words and text define non-places like transferia, the time experience is just as important. ‘Since non-places are there to be passes through, they are measured in units of time’ (Augé 1995: 104). Entering and leaving transferia goes unnoticed. ‘The retreat of the dynamic perception made travelling a paradoxal experience: in the hard of the outer movement one would experience the absence of the world and a standstill in space. One feels no distance between departure and arrival’ (Nijenhuis & van Winden 2007: 130). The conversion from space in time produces the infra-normal timespace. In her subspace houses an unstable form that emerges, sticks and disappears again. Speed, time and space go together and form a language that stimulates the imagination of the passer-by. Especially park&rides and transferia, spaces where movement of cars, pedestrians, cyclists and public transport fuse together, could use the infra-normal timespace. The time-space experience according to Nijenhuis is the new ‘artistic vision’ where designers in thinking about the city can occupy themselves. ‘The observation of the surrounding from the movement’ (Nijenhuis & van Winden 2007: 81). This hypothesis fits perfectly in the contemporary age, where everything is in motion and every individual seems to be in a hurry and places like transferia are only visited for a short period of time. It’s a dynamic thought that can be placed in the futuristic genre: enthousiasm about the car and the new human experience: speed. An example of these futuristic images is the artist Umberto Boccioni. He didn’t seek pure form, but pure pliable rhythm. He constructed the action of bodies. These dynamics translated to architecture produces spiral structures instead of static buildings.
Simon Henley schrijft over dit plan: ‘Pleasure comes from the devices employed to move cars and people through the section, from the light, and from the intimate encounters that particular situations afford’ (Henley 2007: 81).

Like Lars Spuybroek describes in his book Machining Architecture, there is a indissoluble relationship between perception and action. The action of an individual is determined by the view one takes. Not individual choices, but mass reactions. The flow of reactions is guided by the design of the moment of action. The Masterplan of Stirling Wilford&Assocaites in association with Walter Nägeli for the Braun headquarters in Melsungen plays to movement and experience. The visitor and employees are taken on a journey built of short meetings, first in their car and later on foot. After the entrance the road follows a canal around a lake. After a viaduct and a pass through an opening in a heavy concrete wall this formal landscape abruptly transforms into an informal one with industrial buildings. Once in the parking garage a spiral brings the motorist from deck to deck. When leaving the lot on foot one is led to his destination via dramatic bridges and staircases. The parking building and the landscape are indissolubly linked and the time-space experience created through the interior entertains the motorist. Simon Henley writes about this plan: ‘Pleasure comes from the devices employed to move cars and people through the section, from the light, and from the intimate encounters that particular situations afford’ (Henley 2007: 81). Marc Augé also writes about the time-space experience in the shape of non-places. ‘There are spaces in which the individual feels himself to be spectator without paying much attention to the spectacle’ (Augé 1995: 86); when one is waiting on a platform for a train, one occupies the travellers space during his movement/action on a certain route, but in a moment of rest. Watching is the action. In the nineteenth century, train travelling was like theatre. The trip went by like a movie on the silver screen. One would surrender himself to the movement and the experience. The transformation of space into time can be called the infra-normal timespace of speed. Wilfried van Winden writes about this theme: ‘The space of the speed is structural analogous with the scenic language space of the poetic objects. Languange is emphatic, because she can conjure images immediately’ (Nijenhuis & van Winden 2007: 130). Next to the manual using words and text, which according to Augé can define a non-place, movement in the form of speed also seems necessary to shape a non-place like a transferium to a passer-by.

25.

A transferium is part of the dynamic world of mobility. Even Sain’Elia (Città Nuova 1914) and Le Corbusier (La ville contemporaine 1922) used a hybrid station (a transfer location) to reach their goal of ‘absorbing the dynamic world of mobility into the static world of the city.’ The aforementioned projects are examples of fused movements at a point. Even Sin Centre (1959-62) by the English architect Michael Webb is a hybride design where both vehicle and pedestrian are incorporated into a circulating system, which makes sure the large flow of people are easily guided through different spaces. The Roissy-Charles airport of the architect Paul Andreu has an opposite standpoint, where different worlds of mobility remain separated. The architectonic layer encompasses the whole.

Uit dit ontwerp stelt Simon Henley terecht de vraag: ‘What makes the multi-storey carpark recognizable – is it the function or the form?’ (Henley 2007: 207). Hadid beschrijft dit concept als volgt: ‘A field, where the patterns of movements are engendered by cars, trams, bicycles and pedestrians, each has a trajectory and a trace, as well as a static fixture. It is the transition between transport types that is rendered as the material and spatial transitions of the station, landscaping and the context’ (Henley 2007: 83). Als Marc Augé schrijft: ‘Clearly the word ‘non-place’ designate two complementary, but distinct realities: spaces formed in relation to certain ends (transport, transit, commerce leisure), and the relations that individuals have with these spaces’ (Augé 1995: 94), kan het eerste vertaald worden naar de functie en het laatste naar de vorm.
Zaha Hadid Architects, Park+ Ride Hoenheim-Nord, Strasbourg 1998-2001
28.
Function or Form The hybrid design for transfer locations combine the different means of transportation with the use of diagrams or structures. Often, these are three dimensionally translated thanks to IT. Aranda/Laschs 10 mile spiral is a complex design for a parking solution combined with a road originating from a dirty spiral flowing from algorithms (a mathematical approach to achieve a architectonic solution). The dirty spiral has undergone several metamorphoses and has become a structure of its own, more a dynamic building then an infrastructure. Simon Henley ask the appropriate question: ‘What makes the multi-storey car park recognizable – is it the function or the form?’ (Henley 2007: 207). The function as transfer point for a transferium is clearly determined by the government and has to meet demands on functional level as well. But the shape is undetermined. What is this shape? How can this transcend the function? A shape must be attractive and dynamic and be able to take the commuter on a journey through the transferium. The function can be subsequently connected to the shape. If the shape has an guiding and recognisable effect, the shape can become more abstract, like in the example of Zaha Hadid. Zaha Hadid Architects have based their car park Hoenheim-Nord in Strasbourg on the concept of ‘patterns of movement’. Hadid describes this concept as follows: ‘A field, where the patterns of movements are engendered by cars, trams, bicycles and pedestrians, each has a trajectory and a trace, as well as a static fixture. It is the transition between transport types that is rendered as the material and spatial transitions of the station, landscaping and the context’ (Henley 2007: 83). The result is a car park that looks like a true abstract work of art. The graphic shape has clearly transcended it’s function in this example. The static parking lot has changed into an inspiring dynamic field, which creates more possibilities then parking alone. As Marc Augé writes: ‘Clearly the word ‘non-place’ designate two complementary, but distinct realities: spaces formed in relation to certain ends (transport, transit, commerce leisure), and the relations that individuals have with these spaces’ (Augé 1995: 94), the first can be translated to function and the latter to form. The shape can make a place more attractive to individuals. It can be concluded that to give a transferium a certain stature and identity, the design is an important aspect.
29.
30
Conclusion A transferium offers the possibility of daily freeing the individuality. The traveller can let the non-place lead him through it and experience all the impressions empty-headed. The potential of the location lies not in the implementation of functions but in the design of the place. It must guide the traveller on his daily trip through the transferium from arrival to departure. Like Stirling with Braun headquarters offers employees a great way to the office on their daily journey, where the landscape is optimally experienced and the functions and buildings integrated into the landscape contribute to this view. That a shape can produce a pleasant experience, illustrates the design of Konstantin S. Melnikov. By using slopes, symmetry and expressive shapes, like diagonals and half circles, the car park is not only a dynamically impressive appearance, but the routing through the building is a true challenge. Also the use of staircases, walkways, see through’s, columns, like OMA designed at L’Espace Piranesien, can give a transferium a dramatic character. By shaping a transferium in that aesthetic way, movement is created at the location and this makes the outside space interesting and representative to experience. The tranferia form a flowing link between city and highway. With the continuous motion of the coming and going of people goes a dynamic approach, that of speed. This aspect is dynamic and can form the experience of the traveller. The speed can be sent through a shape, like a spiral creates a continuous speed and a moving panoramic view for the traveller, like the 10-mile spiral of Aranda/Lasch, in stead of a ten mile standstill with the same view. This design keeps the traveller in motion and entertained through the landscape like a movie passing by. In stead of drastically reducing the speed when leaving the highway to a complete standstill when entering the transferium, the place can be designed more dynamically with the help of spirals, slopes, curves and certain material to make the speed flow up or down.
31.
32.
A transferium is supposed to be an experience for the traveller where he or she is guided free from the daily rut. This guidance is in the form of the manual. A non-place is supposed to be coloured in by text and pictures. Like Teresa Sapey’s icons immediately tell you what to do and indirectly show poetry and symbolism of the Hotel Puerta de America car park. This design has also incorporated the different layers of speed. The icons are clear as soon as you look at them, but can also be read and looked at longer by a traveller with more time. The result is a pretty picture, next to clarity, background and content about the location. The information at a transferium can be designed just like the example, incorporating the different layers of speed. She is supposed to be recognisable, so she guides the traveller through the transferium naturally. The design for a transferium must create an attractive and supple transfer for the traveller. Using fluent motion and expressive information the passer-by is guided through the place freely and pleasantly, from the landscape background to the urban platform and at the end of the day vice versa. The transferium, an experience between city and highway.
