The aim of the research is to find out whether there is an effect of crossword puzzle as an assessment on students’ ability to scan a text. This research was conducted to the second grade students’ of Junior High School of Darul Muttaqien, Parung, Bogor. There are four classes of class VIII. Each class consists of 45 students. The writer used random sampling technique. He takes 25% from all class . The writer used experimental method using pre-test and post test control group design. He chooses the sample by random sampling technique. He gave the students reading comprehension test focusing on scanning skill. After calculating the score, he found the result of the t-computed is 3.51 and the value of 0.05 level of significance in the table with d.f 40 is 2.02 and t with 0.01 level of significance and d.f.40 is 2.42, it shows that t-computed is higher than the t-table. It means that the alternative hypothesis is accepted which implies that there is an effect of crossword puzzle as an assessment on students’ ability to scan a text. He concludes that crossword puzzle can be used as an assessment to assess students’ ability to scan a text.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui bagaimana pengaruh Teka Teki Silang terhadap kemampuan siswa dalam membaca teks secara sekilas pada siswa kelas VIII di MTs Darul Muttaqien Parung Bogor dan apakah ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara kemampuan siswa membaca teks secara sekilas dengan menggunakan Teka Teki Silang dan tanpa menggunakan Teka Teki Silang. Sampel yang di ambil dalam penelitian ini adalah 4 kelas. Mereka adalah 23 siswa/i dari kelas percobaan dan 23 siswa/i dari kelas kontrol atau 25% dari seluruh siswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian yang berbentuk percobaan
dengan
menggunakan pre tes dan post tes. Penulis memilih siswa/i dalam penelitian untuk memahami bacaan teks focus pada kemampuan membaca secara sekilas secara acak. Setelah penghitungan skor dengan menggunalkan t test hasilnya adalah 3.51 dan dengan table signifikan level 0.05 dengan d.f 40 adalah 2.02 dan t dengan level 0.01 dengan d.f 40 adalah 2.42. Hasil penelitian ini berarti bahwa ada pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap kemampuan siswa dalam belajar membaca teks dengan cara membaca sekilas dengan menggunakan Teka teki Silang dibanding siswa yang belajar membaca teks secara sekilas tanpa menggunakan Teka Teki Silang.
