Newly hatched turtles are so tiny and cute! If you find them, you might feel that you don’t want to release them into the water, because being so small (7 cm or so) they would just be eaten straight away.
3
Bagaimana menurut kamu?
So many enemies are waiting for them on the beach and in the water. Especially the first days of their lives are so dangerous, that most of them will not survive. Only 1 in a 1,000 will become adult. Isn’t that sad and cruel?
5
Why not keep the little darlings until they are a little bigger? You could feed them some fish or salad and find out what kind of food they like.
7
But turtle hatchlings are not as weak as you might think. Instead, they are very well equipped to fend for themselves during their early stages of life. When they hatch, they try to reach the water as soon as possible. The yolk sacs that they still have supply them with enough energy for the first couple of days.
9
They use that energy from the yolk-sac to move away from the coast and the predators as fast as they can, and swim to their feeding areas, which are far away. Any delay will decrease their chances of survival.
11
Down in their nest in the sand, the turtle hatchlings wait for each other to emerge to the surface at the same time. This gives them better chances for survival. They normally also wait for the surface sand to cool down before emerging, because chances for survival are better at night. However, on cloudy days they can also hatch during the day.
13
Keeping turtle hatchlings in captivity to let them grow bigger before releasing them is called headstarting. This technique creates many problems. Hatchlings in captivity suffer from diseases like eye infections and often bite each other, due to living under unnatural conditions.
15
Furthermore, keeping the hatchlings in a tank doesn‘t give them the opportunity to dive deep enough. For the proper development of their lungs they need to be in open water. The hatchlings often develop lung diseases when kept in captivity.
17
And the worst thing is when the turtles get used to being fed by humans. What will happen, if they are released later and there are no humans around to feed them? Will they be able to find their own food or will they just starve?
19
We also have to keep in mind that the 999 out of 1,000 hatchlings that do not make their way to become a big adult sea turtle are not just lost. They are part of the natural food chain in the ocean and feed many different species of fish. We are at the other end of this food chain and the more hatchlings we have in the ocean the more fish we have to eat.
21
So what can we do to help turtle hatchlings? Those that are just emerging from the nest should be left alone to reach the water on their own. However, there is nothing wrong with helping them a little bit by escorting them to the sea and chasing seagulls and crabs away that are looking for an easy meal.
23
Hatchlings find the ocean at night by running towards the brightest area, which normally is the horizon over the water. But if there are lights from houses or streets, hatchlings might run in the wrong direction. If you find hatchlings going the wrong way, you can collect them and release them closer to the water away from the lights.
25
Once turtle hatchlings have reached the water they become part of life in the ocean and the fittest will survive, like it has been for many millions of years. There is no good reason for keeping hatchlings in captivity. Do not encourage headstarting-programs by paying entrance fees or donating money for turtle-baby releases!

Ochrana není složitá, pomozte i Vy!
Zabraňte dostávání odpadu a igelitů do moře!
