Dynamic Management Control Systems
About the ‘Competing for Growth’ study (2011) • For the past two years, Ernst & Young has been engaged in a program of research and work with clients as they seek to survive and respond to the downturn • This has led to many thousands of client meetings around the world through our Opportunities in adversity and Lessons from change programs • Competing for growth is our latest research program. With its first version launched in October 2010 we sought to understand what companies are doing to return to profitable growth • With our Competing for growth refresh – How business is growing beyond boundaries – we are now try to identify how high performing companies have implemented successful growth strategies and respective tactics • Towards the end of 2010 we interviewed executives from 1,400 companies from around the world and across all sectors • In January and February 2011 we complemented this research with two additional research studies, one aiming at 400 C-suite and marketing managers to better understand how they entered new markets and innovated, and one aimed at additional 400 C-suite and HR directors to understand how they addressed talent management • We have identified the 33% of “high performers” in terms of both profit and revenue growth and tracked their responses to see if a pattern of successful management action can be found and detail further explained
Finance executives and business executives may have different views on priorities
Our research shows that high performers are following a shared growth agenda … Broaden product/ service offer
Prioritize markets
Focus on key segments
Reinforce brand
Customer reach Accelerate speed of response Create flexible work/delivery platforms
Inform pricing process
Operational agility
Master innovation
High Performers are…
Cost competitiveness
Pass on cost pressure Optimize capital
Improve collaboration
Stakeholder Confidence Identify and explain risks
Re-engage with internal talent
Enhance reporting
Sustain cost reduction
Anticipate regulatory compliance
How are businesses growing beyond boundaries? Achieving profitable and organic growth from three key drivers Being flexible but cautious on market entry
Competitive advantage and ultimately growth is more likely for those who can achieve the right balance between customer reach, operational agility, cost competitiveness and stakeholder confidence.
Choosing new markets carefully
Acting to optimize control of price Being more transparent and detailed in communication
Driving innovation from current customers
Building the right team to activate the operation quickly
Moving quickly from idea to market
Being more selective to recruit but faster to develop and deploy
Acting to capture more value Taking their stakeholder on the journey
Engaged in an intense battle for talent Being more engaged with employee engagement
The application of this framework can be seen to drive high performance in achieving profitable and organic growth from the three core sources of market expansion, product and service innovation and talent and skill management.
Levels of uncertainty can be identified
Level 1: A Clear-Enough Future
•
Possible to develop a single forecast of the future that is precise enough for strategy development. The forecast will be sufficiently narrow to point to a single strategic direction
Level 2: Alternate Futures
1
•
2
The future can be described as one of a few discrete outcomes. The alternate outcomes all have different implications for strategy development
3
Level 3: A Range of Futures •
Continual range of potential outcomes based on a limited number of key variables. The actual outcome may lie anywhere along the continuum
Level 4: True Ambiguity •
Multiple dimensions of uncertainty interact to create an environment that is impossible to predict

Strategische vragen in de boardroom
“Kennen we de exogene risico’s voldoende?” “Is onze strategie toekomstvast”
“Moeten we investeren in opkomende markten?
