Het Tijd/Ruimte Diagram als Nieuwe Methodiek voor Ontwerpgerichte en Integrale Cultuurhistorische Inventarisaties Loes J.T. Janssen

Abstract - In ons land worden grote infrastructurele projecten gepland en uitgevoerd. De impact die deze projecten hebben op de ruimtelijke omgeving is enorm. Het bestaande cultuurhistorische landschap verdwijnt in een rap tempo als deze historische onderlegger niet goed bestudeerd wordt en meegenomen in het maken van de plannen. Een vraagstuk dat onderzoekers al tijden bezighoudt is hoe we het landschap en het erfgoed in dat landschap het beste kunnen inventariseren en beschrijven en tegelijkertijd de historische gelaagdheid overbrengen aan de ontwerpers van het landschap. Het tijd/ruimtediagram is een nieuwe methodiek die deze biografie van het landschap beschrijft en de informatie op een aansprekende manier presenteert aan de ontwerpers van de ruimtelijke omgeving. Het historische verhaal van het landschap wordt in het tijd/ruimtediagram met de heldere symbolen in een soort stripverhaal weergegeven. De methodiek is interdisciplinair, procesmatig, landschapsgericht, maakt gebruik van de aspecten tijd en ruimte en is tegelijkertijd visueel en verhalend. De methodiek dient verder te worden uitgewerkt om de werkelijke waarde voor ontwerpers te bepalen. Feit is echter dat er vraag is naar een goede vertaling van het historische verhaal naar de ontwerpers en dat de methodiek van het tijd./ruimte diagram een stap in de goede richting is.
Inleiding Ruimtelijke ingrepen leggen in Nederland een grote druk op het cultuurhistorische landschap. Hierdoor verandert het aanzicht en de identiteit van het landschap. Dit is echter niet nieuw: al decennia lang gebruiken onze voorouders het Nederlandse landschap. Ze voegen ze er stukjes aan toe, wijzigen lijnen en verwijderen elementen die hen niet meer dienen en drukken zo steeds hun stempel op de vormgeving van het landschap. Zo werd het landschap ook echt ons Nederlandse landschap, met al haar karakteristieke elementen. De ingrepen die tegenwoordig op de rol staan zijn echter zeer groot. Denk aan de aanleg van spoorwegen zoals de Betuwelijn en de HSL, maar ook grote Vinex uitbreidingen zoals Leidse Rijn bij Utrecht en Schuytgraaf bij Arnhem en de ruimtelijke ingrepen in het rivierenlandschap in het kader van Ruimte voor de Rivier. Maatschappelijk noodzakelijke ingrepen, die desalniettemin zorgen voor een grote druk op het zo kenmerkende cultuurhistorische landschap. De grote uitdaging in Nederland ligt daarmee in het vinden van een balans tussen vooruitgang en het behouden van de identiteit van dit eeuwenoude cultuurlandschap. Wat een onoverbrugbare tegenstelling lijkt is feitelijk een kwestie van goede kennis van het cultuurhistorische landschap en het creatief omgaan met diens bestaande identiteit. De Nederlandse regering heeft hiervoor in 1999 de Nota Belvedère (Anon, 1999) in het leven geroepen: met de denk - en werkwijze van 'behoud door ontwikkeling'. Sindsdien poogt men in Nederland om te ontwerpen met cultuurhistorie en is de relatie tussen geschiedenis en ontwerp een van de hoofdthema’s van het debat over architectuur, landschapsarchitectuur, stedenbouw en ruimtelijke ordening (Kolen en Baselmans, 2004). Van Doesburg en Spek (2005) constateerden drie belangrijke knelpunten toen zij zich geconfronteerd zagen met deze opgave bij het ontwerpen van de ruimtelijke ingrepen in het kader van Ruimte voor de Rivier: 1. een gebrek aan integrale overzichtsstudies van cultuurhistorische waarden; 2. een gebrek aan een integrale cultuurhistorische onderzoeks- en waarderingsmethode op gebiedsniveau; 3. een gebrek aan een ontwerpgerichte presentatiemethode ten behoeve van de planvorming. In dit artikel is de methodiek van het Tijd/Ruimte diagram in combinatie met een landschappelijke geomorfogenetische kaart beschreven. De methodiek wil in ieder geval de oplossing wil bieden voor twee van de bovengenoemde knelpunten: het voorzien in een methodiek voor het uitvoeren van een integrale overzichtsstudie van het cultuurhistorische landschap én het ontwerpgericht presenteren van de resultaten aan planvormers en ontwerpers die werken met het principe ‘behoud door ontwikkeling’.

Literatuur Het uitvoeren van interdisciplinair onderzoek is niet nieuw: Kolen en Baselmans (2004, p.25) geven aan dat het zoeken naar een integrale methodiek, een oeroud vraagstuk is in de geografie en archeologie. Namelijk hoe de samenhangen tussen de materiele en immateriële, en de natuurlijke en culturele aspecten van landschappen, moeten worden bestudeerd. Er zijn al vele pogingen gedaan om meer te denken vanuit het landschap als een integraal geheel van natuur en cultuur. Voorbeelden van deze studies zijn ‘de biografie van het landschap’ van Hidding et al. (2001), ‘Landschapsbiografische ensembles’ de projectnota Bunnik Buiten Gewoon Mooi van Adviesbureau Cuijpers & RAAP (2003), het landschapsarcheologisch onderzoek in het Maasdal van Stoepker et al. (2004) en niet te vergeten de tijdbalk zoals gepresenteert in het Rapport Noordwaard, ontwerpen met Cultuurhistorie (Bosch en Slabbers, 2005). De genoemde studies geven allen blijk van het belang van de integratie tussen de aspecten tijd en ruimte in het landschapshistorische onderzoek, maar slagen er zelden in dit ook echt te bewerkstelligen. De in dit artikel beschreven methodiek is een volgende stap in deze zoektocht. Voorbaserend op eerder onderzoek, wordt nu een nieuwe ingang gepresenteerd, de methodiek van het tijd/ruimte diagram. Naast interdisciplinair onderzoek is deze methodiek ook geschikt voor het ontwerpgericht presenteren van het cultuurhistorische landschap aan de ontwerpers van onze ruimtelijke omgeving. Uitgangspunten Bij het realiseren van het eerst doel, de interdisciplinaire onderzoeksmethodiek, zijn de uitgangspunten genomen dat de methodiek naast interdisciplinair ook procesmatig en landschapgericht moet zijn. Dit is gerealiseerd door het cultuurhistorische landschap te benaderen als een ecologisch model zoals beschreven door Teune & Terlingen (1977). Het ecologisch model onderscheidt endogene, exogene en anthropogene processen, die elkaar steeds beïnvloeden. Feitelijk combineert de methodiek de ‘geofactoren’ in het (a-)biotische landschap zoals onderzocht in de wetenschapstakken geologie, fysische geografie en biologie en ‘antropogene invloeden’ zoals onderzocht in archeologische, bouwhistorische en historisch geografische studies (Fig. 1). Naast het aspect ruimte, is het aspect tijd belangrijk, immers met het verstrijken van de tijd wordt het landschap gevormd door invloeden van mens en natuur.

Bij het realiseren van het tweede doel: het ontwerpgericht presenteren is het uitgangspunt dat ontwerpers van de ruimte visueel zijn ingesteld en tevens gevoelig zijn voor het ‘verhaal’ van het landschap. Zij zullen uit zichzelf geen zware wetenschappelijke verhandelingen gaan lezen en dienen dus zowel visueel, als met een aansprekend verhaal geprikkeld te worden. De beschreven methodiek, is een uitwerking van bovenstaande uitgangspunten: interdisciplinair, procesmatig, landschapsgericht, met gebruik van de aspecten tijd en ruimte, visueel en verhalend. Methode De gepresenteerde methodiek bestaat uit een aantal elementen namelijk: bronnen, visuele hulpmiddelen en de uiteindelijke ‘biografie van het landschap’, een term die reeds door Hidding et al. (2001) uitgebreid is beschreven, maar nu op een nieuwe manier tot stand komt. In figuur 2 zijn deze elementen schematisch ten opzichte van elkaar weergegeven. Het komt kortweg neer op het systematisch inventariseren van beschikbare bronnen en deze rangschikken in cultuurhistorische kaarten en een tijd/ruimte diagram. Deze vormen de basis om het verhaal van het landschap te vertellen in tijdsbeelden en diachrone ontwikkelingen. Samen vormen ze de biografie van het landschap (Fig. 2).

Het tijd/ruimte diagram bekeken Feitelijk is een tijd/ruimte diagram van een gebied, niets anders dan een vereenvoudigde weergave van landschapseenheden (op de horizontale as), door de tijd heen (verticale as). Het diagram krijgt inhoud door de schematische weergave van de elementen in het landschap, in een bepaalde tijdsperiode en tevens door de processen die van invloed zijn tussen de elementen en door de tijd heen. Een vakje op de horizontale (ruimte-) as in het tijd/ruimtediagram representeert een landschappelijke zone op een landschappelijke kaart. Het tijd/ruimte diagram in combinatie met deze kaart maakt van een 2 dimensionaal kaartbeeld een 3 dimensionaal beeld, door de toevoeging van tijdsdiepte. Anders gezegd krijgt de historische beschrijving van het landschap naast een temporele ook een duidelijke ruimtelijke component (Fig 3). Er is gekozen om geomorfogenetische eenheden te gebruiken als landschappelijke eenheden, omdat deze de vorming van het natuurlijke landschap beschrijven en de basis vormen van de bodemgesteldheid en hoogteligging. Diverse studies wijzen uit dat, vooral vroege, menselijke activiteiten sterk verbonden zijn met bodemgesteldheid en hoogteligging (o.a. Jochim, 1976, Bettinger,1980 en Parker 1985). Tevens biedt deze kaartkeuze verfijnde mogelijkheden om de methodiek door te ontwikkelen met het oog op prospectie en waardering van elementen op basis van de bodemopbouw ter plaatse.

Het kale tijd/ruimte diagram wordt per periode, systematisch gevuld met informatie over zelf te kiezen thema’s zoals geologie, vegetatie, bewoning, landgebruik, waterstaatkunde, infrastructuur of religie. Symbolen als pijlen, kleuren, vlakken, maar ook schematische weergaven van de werkelijkheid zoals bomen, dijken, kastelen, worden ingezet om het verhaal te vertellen. De onderzoeker zet in op het ontrafelen van de processen die actief zijn in het landschap, omdat daarmee de elementen in het landschap in een verklarend en verhalend kader geplaatst kunnen worden. En juist die verhalen zijn zo belangrijk bij de vertaling naar een ruimtelijk ontwerp. Met het tijd/ruimte diagram krijgt de ontwerper het stripverhaal van het ontstaan van het cultuurhistorische landschap gepresenteerd. De symbolen in het stripverhaal geven in onderlinge samenhang een schat aan informatie weer (Fig. 4): 1) diachrone ontwikkelingen van het landschap; 2) ruimtelijke samenhang in het landschap; en 3) sporen of relicten in het huidige landschap vanaf het moment van ontstaan. Het stripverhaal kan op deze manier horizontaal of vertikaal gelezen worden, al naar gelang hij een periode kiest om zich te laten inspireren of een thema door de tijd heen. Cultuurhistorische kaarten uitgelicht Provinciale cultuurhistorische waardekaarten zijn opgebouwd uit op elkaar gestapelde datasets zoals de Archeologische monumentenkaart (AMK) en het Rijksmonumentenregister. Het zijn bruikbare kaarten om te kijken welke waarden, op welke locatie in het landschap liggen. Ze zijn echter minder geschikt om daadwerkelijk het verhaal van het cultuurlandschap te ontrafelen en te vertellen. Hiervoor is een interpretatie nodig van deze stapeling, met andere woorden: wat betekent de ligging van een element eigenlijk, waarom ligt het daar en wat is de relatie met de omliggende elementen en de landschappelijke onderlegger? Om die vragen te beantwoorden is een datarangschikking nodig die bewerkstelligt dat datasets gemakkelijk per periode of per thema, of zoals in de archeologie gebruikelijk is, per complextype gerangschikt kunnen worden. Uit alle datasets samen worden vervolgens nieuwe cultuurhistorische kaarten per thema of per periode opgesteld. Als ondergrond van de kaarten kan weer een geomorfogenetische kaart dienen, waarmee de kaarten weer direct gelinkt worden aan het tijd/ruimte diagram. Op deze manier vormen de kaarten een ondersteuning voor het tijd/ruimte diagram. Uit de combinatie kunnen we het diachrone verhaal per thema of landschappelijke eenheid, of juist het verhaal per periode lezen (Janssen, 2006). Immers, het wordt snel duidelijk welke thema-elementen in een bepaalde tijd aanwezig waren.

De biografie van het landschap De biografie van het landschap wordt beschreven met behulp van het tijd/ruimtediagram en de cultuurhistorische kaarten. Het ultieme doel van de biografie is het woordelijk, verhalend illustreren van het tijd/ruimte diagram en de cultuurhistorische kaarten en ondersteund hierbij het stripverhaal. De biografie beschrijft de diachrone verhalen in het landschap per thema en de verhalen per periode in tijdsbeelden aan de hand van het tijd/ruimte diagram. Door de ‘lege’ en ‘volle’ plekken in het tijd/ruimte diagram te analyseren, kunnen respectievelijk kennisleemtes en periodes die belangrijk zijn voor een gebied, worden opgespoord en beschreven. Met de cultuurhistorische kaarten kan snel beschreven worden welke elementen aanwezig zijn en welke ontbreken en hoe deze in verhouding staan tot de landschappelijke ondergrond. Steeds is deze biografie ondersteuning van de visuele hulpmiddelen, zoals de tekstballonnetjes in een stripverhaal de tekeningen ondersteunen. Resultaten De methodiek door Janssen (2006) ontwikkeld, is ingevuld voor het Midden IJsselgebied door Janssen en van den Haselkamp (2007). Midden IJssel ligt grofweg tussen de steden Dieren en Deventer en beslaat een oostwest een zone van circa 10 kilometer. In het kader van het Rijksprogramma Ruimte voor de Rivier (www.ruimtevoorderivier.nl) zijn hier aanzienlijke ruimtelijke ingrepen gepland. Het gaat om de aanleg van bijvoorbeeld hoogwatergeulen, winterbedverlagingen, bypasses en dijkverleggingen, maatregelen die Nederland in de toekomst moeten beschermen tegen hoogwater in de rivieren. Het zijn maatschappelijk zeer relevante maatregelen, die echter tevens een grote druk leggen op de cultuurlandschappelijke ruimte. De Rijksdienst voor Archeologie, Cultuurlandschap en Monumenten (RACM) zag zich als kenniscentrum geplaatst voor een probleem (van Doesburg en Spek, 2005). Er waren namelijk geen goede integrale cultuurhistorische inventarisaties uitgevoerd voor het IJsseldal. Tevens had men geen ervaring met samenwerking met ontwerpers, die een andere benadering behoeven dan vakgenoten. Hoe breng je vakinhoudelijke kennis zo over op de ontwerpers, zat zij de ruimtelijke, maar ook de cultuurhistorische kwaliteit kunnen waarborgen? Het antwoord werd gezocht in het ontwikkelen en het uitwerken van een nieuwe methodiek: het uitwerken van de biografie van het landschap in het tijd/ruimtediagram. Het tijd/ruimte diagram werd gevuld met ruwe informatie en daarna uitgewerkt in een beeldend diagram (met dank aan dhr. Kosian). In onderstaande figuur (Fig. 5) is een deel van het tijd/ruimte diagram van het Midden IJsselgebied weergegeven (Janssen en van den Haselkamp, 2007). Op de horizontale as staan de geomorfogenetische landschapeenheden ‘rivieren’, ‘kom’ en ‘rivierduin’, ‘dekzand’ en ‘beekdal’. Deze zijn weer onderverdeeld naar een menselijke component en een vegetatieve component. Op de verticale as zien we de archeologische en historische periodes. Symbolen vertellen het verhaal, de biografie van het landschap geeft de toelichting.

In de biografie van het landschap werd gekozen voor de uitwerking van de thema’s waterschapsgeschiedenis, vegetatieontwikkeling en menselijke bewoning, omdat deze relevant bleken voor het vertellen van het historische verhaal van dit deel van het land. Ook werd per periode het tijdsbeeld geschetst, met de bijbehorende waardevolle elementen en kennisleemtes. De vraag is nu: Vinden ontwerpers en landschapsarchitecten dit een prettige manier om hun informatie over een historisch landschap te vergaren. Discussie Het tijd/ruimtediagram is ontwikkeld naar aanleiding van een specifieke vraag van de RACM. Namelijk de vraag naar een interdisciplinaire benadering van het landschap, om met deze inventarisatie een mooier ruimtelijk ontwerp te creëren. Helaas is de methodiek en de inventarisatie van het Midden IJsselgebied nooit daadwerkelijk voorgelegd aan ontwerpers. Hierdoor is het lastig te bepalen of de methodiek effectief en efficiënt is. Wat vaststaat is dat de methodiek een goede volgende stap is om meer interdisciplinair te werken; om een beeld te maken van een landschap, anders dan kaartmateriaal; om de landschapsgeschiedenis in beeld te brengen; en om ontwerpers een compleet landschappelijk en historisch verhaal te leveren. Testen zal in andere projecten moeten gebeuren. Want met de presentatie van de methodiek is het verhaal niet ten einde, de ontwikkeling gaat door. Het bedrijfsleven pakt de methodiek op en gebruikt het als een instrument om een brug te slaan tussen wetenschapper en ontwerper. Adviesbureau the ReCollective, het bedrijf waar de auteur werkzaam is, wil met ons collectieve verleden als inspiratie, een stimulans zijn voor de ruimtelijke kwaliteit van de moderne leefomgeving. Daarbij wil the ReCollective een vertaler zijn die een vierde dimensie in het landschap toevoegd, de dimensie van de tijdsdiepte (www.the-recollective.nl).

De visie van the ReCollective is dat cultuurhistorici en archeologen het verhaal van het cultuurhistorische landschap moeten vertalen voor ontwerpers, zodat zij op hun beurt onze leefomgeving van een hernieuwde en krachtige identiteit kunnen voorzien. Het tijd/ruimtediagram biedt het bedrijf grote mogelijkheden om deze vertaling te maken. De methodiek wordt bijvoorbeeld doorontwikkeld in het kader van cultuurhistorische profileringen van gemeentes. Immers met het kennen en visualiseren van het historische verhaal, kunnen we zowel de identiteit van een gebied (letterlijk) naar boven halen, als een gebied een historisch georiënteerd imago geven. Naast het beeldend vertalen van het historische verhaal in tijd en ruimte, worden ook methodieken ontwikkelt om met het tijd/ruimtediagram een cultuurhistorisch landschap integraal te waarderen en desgewenst elementen, periodes en thema’s te selecteren. Deze combinatie biedt grote kansen voor de cultuurhistorische hoofdstukken in een Milieu Effecten Rapportage (MER), door de integrale afweging tussen de ondergrondse archeologie en het bovengrondse historische landschap. Ook de inhoud van het diagram wordt desgewenst aangepast. De geomorfogenetische eenheden die de basis vormen voor het tijd/ruimte diagram, worden vervangen door landschappelijk eenheden of deelgebieden, al naar gelang een plangebied of vraag van opdrachtgever dit noodzakelijk maakt. Zo kan het diagram steeds op een andere manier gebruikt worden. Andere mogelijkheden liggen op het vlak van publiekspresentatie. Eenmaal het verhaal goed in kaart gebracht voor ontwerpers van een nieuwe woonwijk, is het slechts een kleine stap naar de verbeelding van het verhaal voor de toekomstige bewoners. Met het beeldende verhaal zullen zij zich beter thuis voelen, door dat zij zich verboden kunnen voelen met wijk. Op deze manier wordt de ontwikkelde methodiek steeds in nieuwe projecten ingezet en aangepast naar de wensen en vragen die de praktijk met zich meebrengt. Conclusie Het tijd/ruimtediagram is een nieuwe methodiek om de biografie van het landschap te beschrijven. Uitgangspunten van de methodiek zijn interdisciplinair, procesmatig, landschapsgericht, met gebruik van de aspecten tijd en ruimte, visueel en verhalend. Door cultuurhistorische en landschappelijke informatie te rangschikken in een tijd/ruimtediagram worden verbanden en processen in tijd en ruimte duidelijk zichtbaar voor de onderzoeker. Door de heldere symbolen wordt het stripverhaal van het historische landschap op een aansprekende wijze gepresenteerd aan ontwerpers van de ruimtelijke omgeving. Hoewel de methodiek nog in de kinderschoenen staat en er nog veel schaafwerk verricht zal moeten worden, blijkt de insteek goed bruikbaar. Het bedrijfsleven ziet mogelijkheden in de aanpak en zij gebruikt de methodiek in projecten waar archeologen en cultuurhistorici input leveren aan ontwerpers en landschapsarchitecten. De methodiek blijkt voldoende flexibel om zich aan te passen aan diverse projecten en lijkt bruikbaar voor diverse toepassingen. Verdere ontwikkeling in de praktijk zal uitwijzen wat de exacte meerwaarde is van de methodiek van het tijd/ruimte diagram. Referenties Anon., 1999. Nota Belvedere.
