1. De wortels van de polarisatie • “Especially in its Western form, Christianity is the most anthropocentric religion the world has seen. (…) Man shares, in great measure, God's transcendence of nature. Christianity, in absolute contrast to ancient paganism and Asia's religions (except, perhaps, Zorastrianism), not only established a dualism of man and nature but also insisted that it is God's will that man exploit nature for his proper ends.” (White Jr., The Historical Roots of Our Ecological Crisis, in Science (1967) 1205) • Anthropocentrisme? (dualisme/eenheid, reductionisme/holisme, instrumentalistisch/intrinsiek, mechanistisch/organisch)

De wortels van de polarisatie • In de epiloog van een heruitgave van Gaia: A New Look at Life on Earth (2000), stelt James Lovelock: • “The churches and the humanist movements have sensed the powerful emotional charge generated by the environmental campaign and have re-examined their tenets and beliefs so as to take account of it. There is, for example, a fresh awareness of the concept of Christian stewardship where man, while still allowed dominion over the fish and the fowl and every living thing, is accountable to God for the good management of the Earth”. • ”From a Gaian viewpoint, all attempts to rationalize a subjugated Earth with man in charge are as doomed to failure as the similar concept of benevolent colonialism.” (Lovelock, 2000)

Celia Deane-Drummond: “one can easily slide into a mandate to do anything”; dit kan gemakkelijk geïnterpreteerd worden als dominant anthropocentrisch, zelfs al is de intentie theocentrisch. 23-2-2015

Illustratie: Evangelium Vitae (1995) no 42 • “As one is called to till and look after the garden of the world (Gn 2.15), man has a specific responsibility towards the environment in which he lives, towards the creation which God has put at the service of his personal dignity, of his life, not only for the present but also for future generations. It is the ecological question – ranging from the preservation of the natural habitats of different species of animals and others forms of life to ‘human ecology’ properly speaking – which finds in the Bible clear and strong ethical direction, leading tot a solution which respects the great good of life, of every life. In fact the dominion granted to man by the Creator is not an absolute power, nor can one speak of a freedom to use and misuse, or dispose of things as one pleases. The limitation imposed from the beginning by the Creator himself and expressed symbolically by the prohibition not to eat of the fruit of the tree (…) shows (…) we are subject not only to biological laws but also to moral ones, which cannot be violated with impunity”. 23-2-2015
11
De wortels van de polarisatie • De katholieke kerk/Vaticaan waarschuwt geregeld voor bepaalde ecologische overtuigingen: • CCC (Katechismus – JP II): “A correct understanding of the environment prevents the utilitarian reduction of nature to a mere object to be manipulated and exploited. At the same time, it must not absolutize nature and place it above the dignity of the human person himself. In this latter case, one can go so far as to divinize nature or the earth, as can readily be seen in certain ecological movements that seek to gain an internationally guaranteed institutional status for their beliefs.” (Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace (2004), n° 463)

De wortels van de polarisatie • In zijn Message for the Celebration of the World Day of Peace (1 januari 2010) zegt paus Benedictus XVI (in een reflectie over Caritas in Veritate (2009, no 48): • “[i]f the Church’s magisterium expresses grave misgivings about notions of the environment inspired by ecocentrism and biocentrism, it is because such notions eliminate the difference of identity and worth between the human person and other living things. (…) They also open the way to a new pantheism tinged with neo-paganism, which would see the source of man’s salvation in nature alone, understood in purely naturalistic terms.” (Pope Benedict XVI (2010), §13) •
Lynn White was overtuigd dat om de ecologische crisis te keren, het noodzakelijk is ‘to find a new religion, or rethink our old one’.

• Testimony of Peter (Michigan, USA): “I think most of the people that I know, whether it’s in environmental groups or environmental agencies of government, are attracted to the field because they really care. (…) It’s something that has to do with almost their spirituality. It is for me. I will, one way or the other, be working on this the rest of my life. It is my life commitment. I’m committed to the earth. It’s committed to me, after all. The least I can do is give back.”

“For most environmentalists that I know, including me, there is a spiritual element to what we do. I hopefully use my rational mind in my work, but it really all stems from a love of, in my case, I guess, Michigan and wanting to see Michigan remain beautiful for other people. That’s a powerful fuel. (…) It’s not like I light candles to pagan gods. I just believe that we have a duty to the earth and that there is a right and a wrong in relation to the earth. Our task as a species is to learn to live more doing what’s right for the earth and right for us too.”
•
“I don’t know how to articulate this without sounding like a bad mystic or a sexist. I don’t think of nature as a “she,” but I do feel an emotional attachment to it, and when you get angry, you feel like you’re defending it. It’s almost like you’re defending a friend or a loved one. You know, for your husband or your children, you would do anything.” (Kovan and Dirkx, 2003).

• “Ethical ideals are not sufficiently motivating conservation behaviors. To understand why not, we need to go (…) to the beliefs, emotions, perceptions, and identities that converge into genuine commitment” (Booth, 2009).
• De notie ‘iconiciteit’ (her)introduceert een diepteperspectief vis-àvis de natuur, ‘not seen as sacred in itself but sacred in its being a dynamic reference to the transcendent/divine’.
