DEAR SUBSCRIBER This issue o f Spirula completes a number o f activities we employed during the last two months. A t the end of November, we organised the 3rd International Shell Show at R otter dam together with the Dutch M alacological Society which again has been a great success. In the first w eek o f December, we sent the Snail Pack mailing to more than 7000 addresses around the world. The Snail Pack is an excellent way to inform the shelling community around the world and since it is free, also the people who can not subscribe to one o f the shell m agazines, can enjoy it. The last week we sent the Vita Marina issue with some nice articles we w orked on for quite a time. The Patella article will undoubtedly fulfil the need o f m any collectors with an interest in this group. And finally you receive this first Spirula issue o f volum e 46. We tried to make it even more interesting for you with a mixture of topical inform ation, field trip reports and collector’s issues. W e hope you can appreciate it; please, keep sending us all your ideas and comments. W e need it to continue improving. Rem ains to wish you all a very happy New Y ear with health, pleasure and the right chal lenges.

In Spirilla 45(1): 13-14 we informed you about the problem s with the Natal M useum at Pieter m aritzburg, South A frica. Probably also thanks to the v o cifero u s o p p o sitio n , the p ro p o sal to provincialise the m useum has been dropped. For the short term at least the museum is to remain nationally funded. This does not m ean that the financial problems o f this beautiful museum (see Spirula 45(5): 13) have come to an end, because funding is still uncertain, but it would have been worse under the province.

DE RODE ZEE
THE RED SEA On the 24th of July 1997 we went to Sharm El Sheikh on the Red Sea in Egypt for a twow eek divin g v acatio n . T his v illag e in the south-east o f the Sinai is well known among divers and is (for now) quieter than Hurgada. A t hom e w e studied the theoretical p art o f the A dvanced Open W ater Diver course so th a t w e c o u ld c o m p le te th e c o u rs e o v e r there. A day o f acclimatisation was really necessary, the tem p eratu re b ein g above 35°C. T he G h azala hotel, w here we stayed, w as pleasant and recently renovated. This hotel was one o f the first at N a’ama Bay ju st as the diving centre of Sinai Divers. M eanw hile the whole bay is built up with hotels and diving centres. A fter shopping for the necessities of life (bot tles o f m ineral water) we picked a place on the beach. Over here it’s not necessary, as in most European countries around the M editerranean, to be early to get a nice spot at the water. T h e re w as p lac e en o u g h , b e ca u se w ho w o uld be fo o lish enough to lie on a beach in the desert with those kinds o f tem peratures in the middle o f Summer? The shade of the wooden sunshades was more than welcome. A nother way to cool down was o f course the sea. W ith our snorkelling equipm ent we looked at what N a’ama Bay had to offer us. Approximately 50m off the beach there was a small fo rm atio n o f ro c k w ith sev eral c o ra ls and an em o n es. O f course, all kind o f fish swam around like the Regal Angelfish (Pygoplytes diacanthus) and the Rusty Parrotfish (Scam s ferrugineas). The filters of the sea, Tridacna maximus (Rôding, 1798), were in copious numbers. Fully embedded, you could o nly see the m an tle s w ith th e ir b e a u tifu l b lu e and green colours. A t another part o f reef you could see that the Red Sea S urgeonfish (A canthurus sohal) has no problem w hen the water level drops at low tide and only 15cm of water is left. As if it were the m ost natural thing in the world they sw im on their sides and continue with feeding and defending their terri tory . This spectacle could also be seen from a floating jetty which was constructed above a drainpipe. This came from a desalination plant which supplied the hotels with fresh water. W e liked our first impression of the R ed Sea. On the next day, time for the check-dive. After our instructor w as co n v in ce d th a t w e d id n ’t g et o u r licen ces by saving coupons, we w ent further into the bay. Doing so, we passed the end o f the previously m entioned drainpipe. The tem pera ture h ere w as c o n sid e ra b ly h ig h e r and a school o f Jacks (Caranx sexfasciatus) were having a feeding frenzy. A fter a Crocodilefish (Cociella crocodila) w aiting for prey betw een some oil-drum s and a Bluespotted Stingray (Taeniura lymma) w hich w as covering itself with sand, we came to a kind of canyon. T his current-scoured valley was a real shell-graveyard. A t a depth of 16m the walls to the left and right were covered with shells brought here by the current. A Conus striatus (L inné, 1758) w as the first shell to be exam ined m ore closely. W e didn’t have much tim e to stay; the instructor sig nalled that w e had to go back. I mem orised the location well because I wanted to come back again with my wife to examine it better. T hat afternoon we went with the boat to Ras Um Sid
Thuis had den we de nodige theorie al doorgenomen om a ld a a r ons d u ik b re v e t u it te b reid en n a a r A d v an c e d O pen W a te r D iv er. E en d a g je acclim atiseren, het was er op dat m om ent ruim 35° C elsius, w as g een o v e rb o d ig e lu x e . H e t G h a z a la h o te l w a a r we verbleven, was gezellig opgezet en recentelijk gerenoveerd. M ore days, m ore dives at locations with exotic nam es like: Far Garden, Paradise, Amphoras, W hite Knight, Ras N asrani and o f course Ras M oham m ed; a d iv er’s p ar adise. This is a highly recom m ended place, not exactly for shell collectors, because it’s a marine reserve park, but for all o f those w ho w ant to see large num bers o f fish, corals and anemones. Sw im m ing through a school o f several hundreds P ickhandle B arracu d as (Sphyraena qenie) was one o f the highlights.
M eer d a g e n , m e e r d u ik e n op lo c a tie s m e t e x o tisc h e nam en als F a r G a rd e n , P a ra d ise , A m p ho ras, W h ite K night, Ras N asrani en n a tu u rlijk R as Mohammed; het duikersparadijs.
A lm ost every day we went on board to explore another diving location. M ostly the sailing took no longer than IV2 hours. In that time we enjoyed the sun and the food on board, although it was sad to see the construction going on by the seashore. Large resorts and hotels with up to 500 room s are under con struction, so in the future tourism will increase rapidly. I think com fortably diving w ill be gone in about 10 years. In the Street o f Tiran the first thing that caught your eye was a large freighter which has been stranded on the reef. This part o f the R ed Sea is noto rio u s for its currents around the reefs and m any vessels have succumbed. The reefs suffer tremendous dam age after a collition with a ship but they recover fairly well after a few years. A fter some explanation by the divem aster about th e d ive lo catio n w e en tered the w ater and enjoyed the terrifically clear visibility o f 25m and the large fan corals (G orgonaria). An 83mm Trachycardium m arerubrum Voskuil & Onverwagt, 1991, at a depth of 26m, fully open and recently polished off, was the only capture o f that day.
P art o f our course was a night-dive. W hile a few Lionfish (Pterois volitans) came to our lights in search of food, a gor geous C ypraea carneola (L inné, 1758) show ed itself at a depth o f 16m. C raw ling o v er the rocks its reddish brow n colour was very noticeable against the grey stone. C onsider ing its size (53m m ) it could also have been a C. leviathan titan but after some research it turned out to be indeed a car neola. The book A guide to w orldw ide cowries by Lorenz & H ubert describes this large form o f a carneola in the northern region o f the R ed Sea. The data concerning m easurem ent ratios from a publication by Schilder confirmed this. At the end o f our night-dive we were surprised by the presence o f a Stonefish (Synanceia verrucosa). An astonishing m aster of camouflage which, with its poisonous spines, this takes more hum an victim s a year than do sharks. 1791) and C. sanguinolentus (Quoy & G aim ard, 1834) had their own place betw een the rocks. The discovery of a very small (16mm) juvenile Conus textile (Linné, 1758) was nice, but a full-grow n specim en (58m m) w hich had buried itself half in the sand made the 2Vi hours o f continuous snorkelling w orthw hile. I w as very pleased to find some (small) Harpa am ouretta (Rôding, 1798) f. crassa. The colour variation was from pale pink-beige to brown-black, with a lot o f variation in size (18-44mm) and age. W ithin the same size one specimen had a very thick outer lip while the other was so thin it was alm ost translucent. It was obvious that a Harpa was a predator when I disturbed him (or her) during lunch: a small herm itcrab that had moved into the house of a Strombus mutabilis (Swainson, 1821). As I picked up the amouretta it clenched its prey firmly but after a while it came to the conclusion that it was safer to let it go and to pull back into its own shell. It was remarkable that over a length of c.300m of beach most shells were concentrated in a stretch of 40m. Also Cypraeas like C. erythraensis (Sowerby, 1837), C. nebrites (Melvill, 1888), C. hirundo (Linné, 1758) and C. gracilis (Gaskion, 1849) were looking for shelter under the small stones. O f course I found a lo t o f N e r ita p o lita (L inné, 1758) on granite rocks. D iverse C onussen zoals C. arenatus (Hwass, 1792), C. tess u la tu s (B o rn , 1 7 7 8 ), C. c o r o n a tu s (G m elin , 1791) e n C. sa n g u in o len tu s (Q uoy & G aim ard, 1834) hadden hun eigen plaats tussen de rotsen.
